That's the way it should be done. A fast winger getting the ball, taking a gap, and running deep into enemy territory, and having that last pass to create a try.
I think the second was equally skilful. Sure it came as a penalty try for the England player's infringement but if you watch the entire sequence you can see that it was actually set up to isolate a front row forward against a winger. Absolutely brilliant by Russell especially.

I love how respectful and disciplined the rugby players are to the officials and their decisions.. none of this surrounding the referee, play acting and crying stuff like in football theh just accept it and get on with it. Same when someone is down injured.. in football so many times players fake injuries to waste some time.. in rugby you go down injuried and the clock is stopped. So simple and effective , why doesn't football learn to do that? Will get rid of all the play acting nonsense and cheating
As a former player even at a very low level that respect for the officials carries on off the pitch. Most refs never have to buy themselves a drink after matches and are fed well for their efforts.

Neutral point of view here. England has plenty of potential and good players but has Eddie Jones any faith at all in them? Even though his side is clearly dominant on the pitch, he wants them to kick good attacking balls away into touch all the time. Refusing to play them ball in hand until it's too late. Why hope to steal a lineout in the opposition 22 when you have a decent attacking ball inside their 40 to work with? This reasoning is beyond me. It feels negative and pessimistic. England have the squad to play a more agressive kind of rugby.
Englands team lacked experience, when the yellow card happened, only player clearly noticable thats tryna disrupt Scotland's momentum was itoje, inexperience showed, its easy saying backline and players are being wasted..cause their not running the ball but if you look at the english backline compared to scotland, they came there for a kicking game, 2 fullbacks (safe under high ball), both centres kicking options haha plus youngs and marcus smith🤦♂️ where the clash ball option in the backs?
I get what you mean, but that kicking game also kept them dominating for vast periods. It was also quite wet. Because of Scotlands defence, I think keeping ball in hand would have left England in a bad spot and left the game a lot more open. It was the only thing pinning Scotland back, and we saw how deadly Scotland were in attack. I don't remember a time where scotland visited the 22 and didnt come away with points. So I think mixed with the poor weather the kicking game was the best option. Otherwise I think we are looking at a big score the opposite way. The thing that really let England down, were a few minor mistakes in accuracy, such as Smith's kick to touch for the pen. It is a great building point for England and I think they did the best they could with a team that lacks chemistry. I mean they almost beat a Scotland side that should be contenders, although I think it was clear today that said Scotland team were still warming up a bit and were really only at 75% of their potential
As a French, i was so happy to see the Scots win. The Auld Alliance still lives. And England is always a tough and smart opponent, that makes the victory more delightful.
Unfortunately can only win after being totally dominated in every statistic against the England youth team and by being awarded an extremely dubious penalty try.

I was at the game and the noise was unbelievable. 6 Nations are so special because of the noise that thousands of away fans make as well. Scotland showed experience and calmness. Russell’s kick to one corner then switching and kicking to the other as one example as well as the kick to touch when England didn’t have a hooker on as another.
Irritating nail biting game in the end, but well done to Scotland. Hope you can keep the momentum (and hope this isn’t another 5th place for England) 🙄
england look poor, if they are to go with smith which they probably will, they need to mature and get a defined team. scotland won today because we were a team who knew eachother and wanted to play for eachother. i was at the match and the english body language during warm ups were really just not into it and they dont look like they have a reason to play

England’s decision making was stupid on another level. Marcus Smith was the only one who played like an experienced England pro…and he’s the most inexperienced. Why was he taken off? Shouldn’t have been! Also, George Fords kicking was shocking when he came on which made the decision look even worse. Why did he not kick the last England penalty for 3 points, rather than to touch. Why was Henry Slade not kicking the ball to touch? He is a far better punter and kicks a lot further into touch… The wingers were god awful as well and offered nothing as expected
For the most part of the game England were the dominant team with the tactics they played. It was a kicking masterclass from Russel that put Scotland in a stronger position. I agree Ford shouldn't have been kicking that ball when Slade was there with his left boot and reputation and success with the touch kicks from it.
Congratulations Scotland, what an excellent defensive shift from your team and Russell was superb as usual. Still, as an England fan, I'm not too upset. Marcus played great, and the first 60 minutes or so were excellent. The penalty try was a silly mistake, but other than that England were a lot more disciplined than last year and there were fewer handling errors. Would have loved a scrum penalty at the end, but that's life eh?
I would love Ref to call line out not straight (it wasn't remotely straight) in lead up to England's first try, but that's life eh? Also in that scrum sequence? First scrum? Marler clear as day collapsed the scrum, no call. The ref made some bad decisions but the notion he did so solely against England? Is just not true.
Both teams played well to an extent, but I'd like to know what England fans or O'Keefe (the ref) were watching. Josh Smith here 👆 has it spot on. In the last sequence Marler 3 times wasn't pushing straight and tried to wheel the scrum. Pen for Scotland every time. England were handed every opportunity to win this game and didn't. That is the mark of a great team that can beat the team and the officials. I'm glad Scotland are finally able to do that.

Scotland did well. When you can beat a team with so much more territory and ball, that says a lot. England were pretty woeful in this one. They had so much possession but didn't have a clue what to do with the ball Those who are saying England just need to build on this are wishful thinkers. England need huge improvements if they're not going to end up bottom again, (not counting Italy as they'll be holding up the table as usual). I think France, Ireland and Scotland will be the teams to watch this year. Scotland's defence was extremely impressive.
Think that's an incredibly harsh take. England switched off twice and Scotland were superb in making them pay. But other than that England were dominant for the majority of the match. That's not an easy thing to do at Murrayfield. All credit to Scotland for showing that killer instinct, but let's not pretend that England were a worse team than Scotland today. They weren't.
Although some of your points are accurate, I would again blame Eddie Jones for this result. Abysmal back selections and terrible substitutions. He keeps chopping and changing the team, which has a bad effect. England beat South Africa and Australia in the Autumn for Christ sake they are much better than this. Of course many injuries are a factor right now for England, but the back selections made zero sense. Especially the wingers, they were god awful today, both attacking and defensively. They offered nothing.

Agreed, beating a team without the ball is a sign of a team being truly competitive world wide. Defence is the one thing that usually sticks wether you are playing badly or playing well. I really fancy Scotlands chances this year, they look clinical and look as if they have the best defence in the competition. And today, I don't think we were anywhere near Scotlands full potential. They made a few silly mistakes and probably werent as good as they normally are at retaining the ball
England were playing pragmatic rugby as far as I know but Eddie Jones game plan is criminal for a team with such talented players. For 2 years now the only option for them is box kicking and never attempt passing the ball until the are in the 22. Stop trying to play like SA, you’ll never reach their level but play with your spirit and your strenghs. Bravo Scotland, you deserved that victory no matter what people says. England fan opinion here...within the first 20 mins I was already holding head in hands. Eddie's tactics are so rigid yet he chooses a dynamic young team. Daily kicking away a 3 on 2 overlap, Youngs ruck ball being SO slow (seriously, watch the Ireland v Wales game for a comparison), discipline issues all over, a dynamic pack with no ball to run onto instead just static catch and run. Taking off Smith assuming the game is won and Ford will manage it away. Not playing a Simmonds at 6 and Dombrandt at 8. No big crash ball centre pick. Ford 2 kick to touch which made hardly any gains. Great control of the game but just so rigid and stagnant and such a stark difference to how they played in the autumn.
Mate, I’m fully with you. I can’t believe how the basics get overlooked. Eddie is preoccupied looking for the ‘next level’ he ignores the current one. His forwards put in an amazing shift but England were never going to break Scotlands defence without a proper 12.

If our starting forwards hadn’t been so dominant Scotland would have ripped us apart. He wanted a kicking game to open up the park and let his skilful backs run in tries. He is so adamant that he wants to play the open game, but when an opposition doesn’t crack (SA RWC final) he’s got nothing left.

Bravo les Ecossais. Awesome performance, brilliant execution. I would say Ireland are the favorites, France the outsider but Scotland are most definitely the dark horse. No doubt England will bounce back but it is great to see the Scots dispatching the Top 5 Nations on a regular basis now. I suspect the Scots will do more than taking a few scalps, they are a worthy contender for the title. I wouldn't go that far, I still think Scotland can only really raise their game when facing England. Most of the time when it is not England they go missing. If you can replicate that desire to win against England in all matches then and only then can Scotland go far
I don't think so. They never turn up in tournaments. Good in the odd games. Dont think they'll finish top 3 this year in the 6N so unlikely to trouble the SH teams. Theyre definitely better though

Neutral point of view here. England has plenty of potential and good players but has Eddie Jones any faith at all in them?
Even though his side is clearly dominant on the pitch, he wants them to kick good attacking balls away into touch all the time. Refusing to play them ball in hand until it's too late. Why hope to steal a lineout in the opposition 22 when you have a decent attacking ball inside their 40 to work with? This reasoning is beyond me. It feels negative and pessimistic. England have the squad to play a more agressive kind of rugby.
Englands team lacked experience, when the yellow card happened, only player clearly noticable thats tryna disrupt Scotland's momentum was itoje, inexperience showed, its easy saying backline and players are being wasted..cause their not running the ball but if you look at the english backline compared to scotland, they came there for a kicking game, 2 fullbacks (safe under high ball), both centres kicking options haha plus youngs and marcus smith🤦♂️ where the clash ball option in the backs?
I get what you mean, but that kicking game also kept them dominating for vast periods. It was also quite wet. Because of Scotlands defence, I think keeping ball in hand would have left England in a bad spot and left the game a lot more open. It was the only thing pinning Scotland back, and we saw how deadly Scotland were in attack. I don't remember a time where scotland visited the 22 and didnt come away with points. So I think mixed with the poor weather the kicking game was the best option. Otherwise I think we are looking at a big score the opposite way. The thing that really let England down, were a few minor mistakes in accuracy, such as Smith's kick to touch for the pen. It is a great building point for England and I think they did the best they could with a team that lacks chemistry. I mean they almost beat a Scotland side that should be contenders, although I think it was clear today that said Scotland team were still warming up a bit and were really only at 75% of their potential

I was at the game and the noise was unbelievable. 6 Nations are so special because of the noise that thousands of away fans make as well. Scotland showed experience and calmness. Russell’s kick to one corner then switching and kicking to the other as one example as well as the kick to touch when England didn’t have a hooker on as another.

england look poor, if they are to go with smith which they probably will, they need to mature and get a defined team. scotland won today because we were a team who knew eachother and wanted to play for eachother. i was at the match and the english body language during warm ups were really just not into it and they dont look like they have a reason to play

Im 40 this year and that's the first time in my life I've ever seen Scotland beat England when England have dominated possession and territory.

England’s decision making was stupid on another level. Marcus Smith was the only one who played like an experienced England pro…and he’s the most inexperienced. Why was he taken off? Shouldn’t have been!
Also, George Fords kicking was shocking when he came on which made the decision look even worse. Why did he not kick the last England penalty for 3 points, rather than to touch. Why was Henry Slade not kicking the ball to touch? He is a far better punter and kicks a lot further into touch…
The wingers were god awful as well and offered nothing as expected

For the most part of the game England were the dominant team with the tactics they played. It was a kicking masterclass from Russel that put Scotland in a stronger position.
I agree Ford shouldn't have been kicking that ball when Slade was there with his left boot and reputation and success with the touch kicks from it.
Congratulations Scotland, what an excellent defensive shift from your team and Russell was superb as usual. Still, as an England fan, I'm not too upset. Marcus played great, and the first 60 minutes or so were excellent. The penalty try was a silly mistake, but other than that England were a lot more disciplined than last year and there were fewer handling errors. Would have loved a scrum penalty at the end, but that's life eh?
I think both teams were high level and neutralised each other - interested to see how they both do in the rest of the tournament!
I would love Ref to call line out not straight (it wasn't remotely straight) in lead up to England's first try, but that's life eh? Also in that scrum sequence? First scrum? Marler clear as day collapsed the scrum, no call.
The ref made some bad decisions but the notion he did so solely against England? Is just not true.
Both teams played well to an extent, but I'd like to know what England fans or O'Keefe (the ref) were watching.
Josh Smith here 👆 has it spot on. In the last sequence Marler 3 times wasn't pushing straight and tried to wheel the scrum. Pen for Scotland every time. England were handed every opportunity to win this game and didn't.
That is the mark of a great team that can beat the team and the officials. I'm glad Scotland are finally able to do that.

Martin Johnson at half time was spot on. England were clunky, not playing flowing rugby at all. Hopefully italy next week will help iron things out.

I was worried before the game and Scotland justified that fear - well played ye wee beasties! Enough for me as an 🏴 fan to feel relatively happy about too given our inexperienced team and playing our fiercest rivals away.

Scotland did well. When you can beat a team with so much more territory and ball, that says a lot. England were pretty woeful in this one. They had so much possession but didn't have a clue what to do with the ball Those who are saying England just need to build on this are wishful thinkers. England need huge improvements if they're not going to end up bottom again, (not counting Italy as they'll be holding up the table as usual). I think France, Ireland and Scotland will be the teams to watch this year. Scotland's defence was extremely impressive.
Think that's an incredibly harsh take. England switched off twice and Scotland were superb in making them pay. But other than that England were dominant for the majority of the match. That's not an easy thing to do at Murrayfield. All credit to Scotland for showing that killer instinct, but let's not pretend that England were a worse team than Scotland today. They weren't.
Although some of your points are accurate, I would again blame Eddie Jones for this result.

He keeps chopping and changing the team, which has a bad effect.
England beat South Africa and Australia in the Autumn for Christ sake they are much better than this.
Of course many injuries are a factor right now for England, but the back selections made zero sense. Especially the wingers, they were god awful today, both attacking and defensively. They offered nothing.

Agreed, beating a team without the ball is a sign of a team being truly competitive world wide. Defence is the one thing that usually sticks wether you are playing badly or playing well. I really fancy Scotlands chances this year, they look clinical and look as if they have the best defence in the competition. And today, I don't think we were anywhere near Scotlands full potential. They made a few silly mistakes and probably werent as good as they normally are at retaining the ball

England were playing pragmatic rugby as far as I know but Eddie Jones game plan is criminal for a team with such talented players. For 2 years now the only option for them is box kicking and never attempt passing the ball until the are in the 22. Stop trying to play like SA, you’ll never reach their level but play with your spirit and your strenghs.

England fan opinion here...within the first 20 mins I was already holding head in hands. Eddie's tactics are so rigid yet he chooses a dynamic young team. Daily kicking away a 3 on 2 overlap, Youngs ruck ball being SO slow (seriously, watch the Ireland v Wales game for a comparison), discipline issues all over, a dynamic pack with no ball to run onto instead just static catch and run. Taking off Smith assuming the game is won and Ford will manage it away. Not playing a Simmonds at 6 and Dombrandt at 8. No big crash ball centre pick. Ford 2 kick to touch which made hardly any gains.
Great control of the game but just so rigid and stagnant and such a stark difference to how they played in the autumn.
Mate, I’m fully with you. I can’t believe how the basics get overlooked. Eddie is preoccupied looking for the ‘next level’ he ignores the current one. His forwards put in an amazing shift but England were never going to break Scotlands defence without a proper 12.

If our starting forwards hadn’t been so dominant Scotland would have ripped us apart. He wanted a kicking game to open up the park and let his skilful backs run in tries. Scotland, to their credit where having none of it. Solid back line defence. He is so adamant that he wants to play the open game, but when an opposition doesn’t crack (SA RWC final) he’s got nothing left.

No doubt England will bounce back but it is great to see the Scots dispatching the Top 5 Nations on a regular basis now. I wouldn't go that far, I still think Scotland can only really raise their game when facing England. Most of the time when it is not England they go missing. If you can replicate that desire to win against England in all matches then and only then can Scotland go far
