I lived in Saudi in the 1990s. I was told then that the problem with extensive irrigation is that the water evaporates quickly and leaves alkali salts behind, thus sterilizing the soil. That problem is yet to be solved with above ground irrigation.
Our Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) predicted that one of the signs of Judgment Day would be that the land of Arabia would return to greenery and rivers, as it once was (reported by Muslim in his Saheeh). This might be a surprising statement, in light of the fact that the Arabs did not think that Arabia was once luscious and fertile and had rivers. This discovery, of a unique species of elephant tusks in the Arabian desert, shows that once upon a time, the desert lands of Arabia actually were luscious green and had large bodies of water on them. What i found fascinating is every Muhammad's prophecy about end of the world is all of them were made by mankind. If we put all spiritual stuff aside, this means mankind will make their own end by themself
Yes,prophet mohammad ﷺ said in the hadith that saudi arabi will TURN BACK into green,so the hadith is pointing both for future and ancient past,as saudi was originally green areas before turning into desert and the hadith or prophecy is saying that it will turn green again.
I wonder how sustainable it can be in the long run. I mean, the irrigation process itself is very water-intensive and therefore could be very much exploiting water sources from another place and actually hurting the natural wildlife there. These projects, no matter how nice they sound, always have to be taken with caution and second thought. But I am happy that they are at least focusing on doing something
this is a sign of the Day of Judgement. A prophecy by prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him said that Saudi Arabia will return to being green again and that is a sign of Allah, the Most High's Judgement
That's something people thought is impossible, but Saudi Arabia proved everyone everything is possible. What a beautiful idea and very important way to keep up agriculture in the world. Proud of what you've doing!
According to hadees in Islam that one of the signs of Judgment Day would be that the land of Arabia would return to greenery and rivers, as it once was (reported by Muslim in his Saheeh).
on all those farms that are just trees sparsely lined up in the sand, they should plant desert grasses over the sand to keep the sand from spreading and blowing around. The type of grass that doesnt need much water.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “The Last Hour will not come till the wealth becomes abundant and overflowing, so much so that a man takes Zakat out of his property and cannot find anyone to accept it from him and till the land of Arabia reverts to meadows and rivers.”
Two problems that quickly leap out...the aquifers they are drawing down to irrigate won't last long since there is never enough rainfall to recharge them and trapping run-off before it reaches the west coast will help increase the salinity of the Red Sea, impacting fish resources, another important part of their economy.
Nothing surprising..! as our beloved prophet has foretold this 1400 years ago... and it coming true... We are in end times... The Prophet ( ﷺ ) said, The hour will not begin until the land of the Arabs once again becomes meadows and rivers. (Muslim).
But greenary in desert will be good for Arabia and if other countries do so it will be good for whole world how does this shows that the world will end ?

Mashallah it is amazing to see Saudi Arabias desert has turned greenery and fertile growing wheat and vegetables no shortage of food for the local people keep going🤲
This comes across as a well-made PR piece that leaves me wondering how sustainable Saudi Arabia's water acquisition is. A quick google search tells me 50% of the country's water is from desalination (which is amazing) but that 40% comes from non-sustainable groundwater. Add to this the fact that they somehow want to be a big exporter of water intensive foods like meat and dairy (probably someone's ego project). It would be cool to see arid countries like SA invest in large scale acquaponics projects, for example, as they have the cash but not the arable land.
I was thinking literally the same thing. Ground water is not a renewable source when one is using water faster than it can be replenished. I liked the fact they are trying to capture the water that normally runs into the sea; that is a good move. But utilizing so much ground water is not.
Don't worry about it. The whole world has sustainable energy, food and water. The only thing we cannot sustain are the people who push for control over humanity with their so called "sustainable development goals". Once we get rid of those people (and we WILL get rid of them), most problems we face today will disappear.
Correction: Water desalination through reverse osmosis requires electricity to work. -Now, there are multiple ways to produce electricity, solar panels, wind turbines, gas/coal turbines, dams (for hydro-power) or nuclear stations. That does not mean that reverse osmosis requires (specifically) nuclear energy as explained in this video.
Very true. Saudi Arabia has plenty of solar resources. Though, I don't know enough about the process to know which energy source is better for this type of project.
That true but to make that much water for irrigation you need nuclear power. It produce water 24/7, you could sell electricity and still have tons of heat that also could be used for desolitisation. It would be insane to do it with fossil fuel and with wind and solar it would take whole area for agriculture with photovoltaic pannels and you need to clean them constantly with water because of regular sandstorms.
@@Ayvengo21 For at least 100 years, electricity has been produced in thermal power plants, which consume oil. Does anyone know if Saudi Arabia has oil?
In the name of development, Saudi is turning desert to fertile farm lands, whereas in India, we are doing the opposite. I hope our Govt too learns the importance of afforestation and block people polluting the environment.
Planting trees can change the environment and they start to receive rain gradually, in Africa particularly East Africa we have started to experience prolonged droughts which may escalate into desert due to deforestation
Sort of... it might conserve water but it doesn't efficiently water either. With that low of water volume combined with the heat of the area, it would be rendered useless in a matter of hours. Centre pivot allows much more water the opportunity to penetrate to the root systems
Maybe the comparison was being made between flooding, canal and center pivot irrigation. For selected crops drip irrigation is likely far more efficient but how would that work on wheat, alfalfa, oats and other non row crop ag products?
@@nathanschmidt4889 This is factually and absolutely wrong. Bottom line, Center pivot is chosen because it is cheaper and simpler to implement than subsurface drip and will not have some of the salinity accumulation problem than a more efficient system can have. The efficiency and efficacy of drip vs pivot is not even worth discussing as modern drip systems blow pivots out of the water (pun intended).
Necessity is the mother of invention. The saudis have proven that hard work and determination can solve what what once unobtainable. Shocking level of positive progress. 👍💪
You think that the fossil water they are using is sustainable? Same as desalination? Same with whatever is powering getting the water up from underground and then pumping it around....? The only way to be sustainable is to use what rainfall there is.
@@alfredneuman6488 and they doing exactly that... They already practice cloud seeding and they do use solar energy. They are doing it gradually considering their kind of environment.🤷♀️
They should invest heavily in planting trees, because trees create stable ecosystems by retaining water on the land and eventually rain starts to come more frequently to the forested areas. This has an beneficial effect of improving agricultural land in the long run. Also, irrigation at the root level is better than spraying from above.
The challenge is how to grow enough trees that survive to begin changing the ecosystem. Even though experiments in China and Europe show it can be done, it is unfortunately very slow going.

Anytime you make an unlivable land livable, you are doing amazing work. By changing the land, you also increase rainfall, which ALL people need and also opens up new business opportunities for locals. I don't begrudge any individual country or region trying to improve their food supply, but a plan like that would come with drawbacks. Sandy deserts are light-colored, while forests, grasslands, and crop fields are dark-colored. Since light-colored areas reflect sunlight back to space, deserts (like ice sheets) have an overall cooling effect on the global climate, even though they are locally very hot. The dry air above deserts also allows for more infrared energy to be reflected into space, since there isn't as much water vapor or clouds to "catch" infrared beams and heat up. Also, greener areas have more water evaporation, which does make local temperatures cooler, but when that vapor condenses back to liquid water, it releases more heat elsewhere.

Planting trees take a toll on the local water reserves. They will run out of water if they don't smartly plant useful trees which consume very small amount of water. If the solution was that simple, 'just plant random trees', all countries around the world would have done.

Growing vegetation in place of deserts will alter the seasons In surrounding region...soo many plants will lead to rain...so the clouds which were passing over Saudi Arabia to some other countries will start precipitating in this artificial forest... Water conservation doesn't mean you start changing the natural path and precipitation area of clouds... I’m from Saudi Arabia, this project seems impossible but it really isn’t. I witnessed a tremendous change over the last 10 years when it comes to greenery. I think this idea might work but over a very, very long time. I wish more countries pay a little bit more effort in acknowledging the importance of forestation. It makes me sad that politics might ruin these efforts, Saudi Arabia for example has proposed to plant over 10 billion trees across the Iraqi desert but they refused due to political reasons.

I read somewhere that they are planning to plant trees there and they think that will restore the hydrological cycle in the whole middle east & north Africa region.
In my opinion - a desert is a desert because of its generell climate. Changing it sounds wonderful but i think that they waste many already scarce finite ressources for that - such as their water ressources deep underground. Those ressources are also connected to other northern countries, such as lybia. If you could terraform it properly it is a good idea but so far it seems sadly only good on the surface. It might also become a source of struggle between countries. I hope that desert countries soon find a perfect renewable solution.

But utilizing so much ground water is not.
it comes across as a well made pr piece because it is a well made pr piece, you are bang on the money sir!
Don't worry about it. The whole world has sustainable energy, food and water. The only thing we cannot sustain are the people who push for control over humanity with their so called "sustainable development goals". Once we get rid of those people (and we WILL get rid of them), most problems we face today will disappear.
"well-made" is subjective, but yeah, I get your point. Definitely a fluffy PR piece

Correction:
Water desalination through reverse osmosis requires electricity to work.

Now, if we could just shift this "fantastic governing" you speak of to focus on not cutting off the heads of their citizens for petty crimes, not dismembering journalists while they're still alive, so the blood coagulation chemicals have a chance to create less of a mess, not cutting of the heads of their citizens for practicing the "wrong" religion, and not flying several commercial airplanes into US landmarks, killing thousands of innocent people, then we could really congratulate them on how well their farming programs are going.

Saudi Arabia is unique because of the desert:)
Interesting fact: the people of Petra did this to a greater extent and more eco friendly thousands of years ago. They transformed desert into a lush green environment.
It was probably not desert then, just semi-arid.
@@nonenoneonenonenone It hasn't changed that much in that short amount of time.
The climate was wetter at that time.
@@randallsmerna384 Precipitation patterns change over time (several centuries is enough for a considerable change) , some areas become drier, others get more rain and snow. Middle East was much wetter when Petra was built.

Most of Africa have the same issues. It would be awesome to make most of the Sahara in to green areas.
it would be bad for the Amazon jungle. Some time ago I read that dust from sahara travels to the Amazon jungle and helps to maintain the trees or something like that.
You realize they're altering the weather to do so, then trying to tax citizens by claiming global warming.
@@chriswyatt3291 That is true. It travels over the ocean to South America and over the Mediterranean sea to the south of Europe making the soil there very fertile. But there are plenty of areas that can be transformed into agricultural lands in Africa, Middle East and Australia.
It would be a good thing to exchange the minerals from the deserts in exchange for the technology to have agriculture in some desert areas of the planet

I love that more food is being provided via this, sadly we did an entire research project in geoengineering in 2018 and came to the conclusion that doing this will lead to some species of desert animals to go close or into extinction...
Wow as we could care any less maybe if your country will provide our country free water and food for the rest of time then we will save the desert animals
And why should other countries take the brunt of your governments failure? There are ways of keeping these species alive with such a drastic change, however remember that this is now a system constructed and maintained by humans, thus if it doesn't receive the nutrients it has been provided now, it will die and become desert again. If you don't care about other life, say so and accept your unwillingness to evolve and stay behind in the past of humanity as a mistake.
I dont think desert animals are worth to save

Planting trees take a toll on the local water reserves. They will run out of water if they don't smartly plant useful trees which consume very small amount of water.
If the solution was that simple, 'just plant random trees', all countries around the world would have done.

Growing vegetation in place of deserts will alter the seasons In surrounding region...soo many plants will lead to rain...so the clouds which were passing over Saudi Arabia to some other countries will start precipitating in this artificial forest...
Water conservation doesn't mean you start changing the natural path and precipitation area of clouds...
Deserts are as important as forests, it has its own place in natural cycle...we should stop messing with nature. Especially Saudi Arabia who is one of the largest carbon polluter and exploiter of natural resources...now are messing with rainfall too

@Abhishek Chavan Global warming is increasing not because of forest action but because of opposite. The temperature rising proportional rising the sea level which leading many countries into danger. Hope you understand the basics before teaching anyone on forestation.
That’s true, and we going to plant more than 10 billion trees around Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦🌲
Great transformation from dessert to agricultural lands. Thanks for sharing this info, more power & subscribers for us staysafe always. 🎶❤️😀👍
Honestly, its amazing how advanced water and agricultural technology in Saudi arabia has become!
Have you heard of the sinai regreening project by a Dutch company? I read somewhere that they are planning to plant trees there and they think that will restore the hydrological cycle in the whole middle east & north Africa region.
In my opinion - a desert is a desert because of its generell climate. Changing it sounds wonderful but i think that they waste many already scarce finite ressources for that - such as their water ressources deep underground. Those ressources are also connected to other northern countries, such as lybia. If you could terraform it properly it is a good idea but so far it seems sadly only good on the surface. It might also become a source of struggle between countries. I hope that desert countries soon find a perfect renewable solution.
It would be absolutely amazing to see a green Saudi Arabia AMEN.
