We need to accept “I can’t afford that” as an acceptable, not shameful, statement. We need to applaud people who say it.

I have been saying this to friends recently as I cannot afford the same frivolous spending they can, however it is made to be a shameful thing. My partner gets very uncomfortable, but I would be far more uncomfortable making up lies rather than being honest x

Yes! And just because you can “afford” the monthly payments, doesn’t mean you can actually afford it! Save up and pay in cash. You’ll pay way less in the long run and delayed gratification is the best way to avoid those addictions to new things

I have to tell myself when thrift shopping for clothes "is this really cute? Or just the cutest thing here? Would you pick it in the original retail store or pay full price?" This helps so much.

“Is it just the cutest thing here?” Is such a good question! Clothes at the thrift can look cute by contrast to all the weird junk around them lmao. And “would I pay retail for this?” Is great too, to prevent those “I’m buying it cuz it’s only $1” purchases. I don’t know why I ever thought that was a good reason to buy something I don’t love.

A while back I started clearing out all of the closets, the drawers, the craft stash, garage shelves etc. Now when I am out and about I remember all of the stuff I have accumulated. I donate almost everything to a local thrift shop and she is so incredibly appreciative. Now when I am at the store seeing the non essentials all over the place I remember all of this stuff I have cleared out, living clutter free is just SO much better. Loved this topic!

I just saw a comment on Instagram that said instead of thinking of something as “I can’t afford this”, think of it as “this doesn’t align with my goals”. It was actually advice on how to talk to children lol but I think it could be helpful to everyone because it doesn’t create a mindset of scarcity.

My husband is a manager for a major retail store and he said the sales aren't really sales. Most of the time, you're saving less than a dollar. The company marks up the sticker price, then posts a 20% off tag on it. Most of the time, the sales are last year's product they need to get rid of.

Great rule! I also will put things into my "cart" online and revisit it in a week or even longer. If it's still there and I still really want it, I might get it. Often, the longer I wait, the less I even want it and I end up deleting it from the cart! All the dopamine hit, none of the purchasing. :)

I bookmark items I think I want at Amazon or Walmart or wherever...then ignore them for a week. I go back to the folder I saved them in the following week and review those items again, deleting the ones I obviously will never use and don't want any longer. Then I wait a few more weeks. If, after a month, I still feel strongly about an item and can honestly say it is now a need, not a "want in the moment" item, then I will purchase it. Most of the time the item is deleted and I have saved myself the guilt.

“There are no mistakes. You don’t win or lose, you win or you learn.” What a great attitude! We get so bogged down by shame, but shame isn’t productive. Reminds me of Marie Kondo’s philosophy that “sometimes the value in the item is that it taught you that you don’t need that item.”

I used to buy clothes or accessories that didn't really fit me or that I didn't really use; one day (after years of decluttering), looking at a catalog, I realized I liked the picture of the woman that went with the thing, and I pictured myself being/living like that. Well, I am me, and I don't need a certain thing to be or live or feel a certain way, that all comes from within 🙏 I am so glad decluttering brought me to this realization

Another top tip is to not store or remember your card details for online checkout. The act of physically getting up to go and get your card and the inconvenience of having to put the number in will serve as a buffer for the impulse. Even better if you store a note with your card that says something like “do you really want this, what purpose does it serve, I am committed to saving $x this year/being debt free, does this help me meet that goal?”

As a shopaholic I used to buy way too much things that I didn’t need so one day I had bought a whole lot of things at 1 shop and the next day I brought everything back telling this guy in the shop that the reason I returned it was because I was a shopaholic and I should never have bought this stuff. He just accepted it and it made me realise that I just had to stop buying everything. I felt ashamed at that moment, but I really learned from it too. It is already a few years ago, but since that moment I never bought loads of things again. I just go to buy something if I really need it.

Many of the viewers are possibly in the "acquisition" stage of life, meaning the getting all of the furniture, hobbies, and stuff that we want. I am in the "Swedish Death Cleaning " phase of life. I don't want to burden my children with having to get rid of all my acquisitions. I do wish I had stopped acquiring much earlier so there would be less to get rid of and more money to have now. Keep up the good work.

I feel that I am at the end of the acquisition stage of life and it's hard to slow down and accept the fact that I now have everything I need for my home and my hobbies and crafts, simply because I'm so used to acquiring all the stuff. But I'm grateful to live in a time and place where this was possible. Now I find time to craft, I journal and I really focus on the everyday life with chores, kids, cooking etc. It's a big shift and it's great to hear from older people like you sharing their experiences. I also keep death cleaning in mind these days. Thank you Sara, all the best to you. ❤️

I’m in the acquisition stage as a newlywed w a job, and before this I was in college w no job or money, anything I owned was thrifted or gifted to me, or purchased the Equate generic brand form Walmart, just the cheapest stuff I could possibly find. But now I know it’s not ideal to buy the item w the lowest price tag, but the item w the best value. I have crippling anxiety through this acquisition phase. It’s so hard to know what’s worth it and what isn’t. I’m trying so hard to avoid accumulating crap and to be mindful with quality purchases, while also not buying anything too expensive (and finding my style now that I can actually afford clothes/decor for the first time). It’s a minefield out there. Taking a lot of research into products that I feel guilty for spending so much time thinking about consumerist topics. Lifestyle creep is getting to me too. Send help lol.

There was one item that actually made me cook more (or want to cook at all, actually) - and that's the Ninja dual air fryer. I live alone and cooking for me has always been the last thing I ever wanted to do, I have zero interest in it naturally. Well, what changed with the air fryer is that cooking became easier and yet things started coming out tastier - I never knew that you can just rub spices on something and in 10-15 minutes you could have a restaurant-quality meal. It was truly a life-changing purchase for me.

I have a tip that I need to start using myself again! Delete all the shopping apps from your phone (target, Amazon etc). On your Amazon account, delete your credit card info. Having to get up and find your card to input has stopped me making impulse purchases in the past. You could keep your debit card on it if you use it for “needs” purchases like kitty litter 😆 at least on the debit card you actually have to check your bank balance first! I used to be the worlds cheapest Mr Krabs while in college, but now that I’m married and we both have jobs… it’s so hard to maintain those old good habits. I realized a few months ago that I have a tendency to buy things that reaffirm my self-worth. I struggle with Imposter syndrome and thinking that I don’t deserve to be where I’m at. This would result in buying home organization wares or newer more expensive work clothes to make me feel more legitimate. It’s a hard pill to swallow but I constantly remind myself that enough is enough, that I am enough, and I don’t have to prove it with “things”.

And half of what I buy goes into a bag that goes to the UPS store to be returned. Works for me.

Checking in with your budget is so important. I keep a mini whiteboard and pen on my fridge to keep track of food shopping and socialising. I give myself a sensible budget for both and update the board every time I spend in those areas. Sometimes towards the end of the month I have to eat what is already in the fridge or cupboards because the budget is almost depleted. Sometimes I get a nice surprise on the socialising budget if I have reined it in all month and can have a treat like going to the cinema and having a nice meal too. I also have a section for savings to keep me motivated. If either of the two budgets have money left at the end of the month, it gets scooped into extra savings.

I do this on a continual basis. I have one excel spreadsheet for each credit card I use.
I also have a Year to date monthly budget spreadsheet for budgeted amounts for each category linked to the credit card spreadsheets.
This shows me what I can afford to spend and what I actually spent.
As costs went up this past year, the budgeted amounts had to be adjusted.

Love these tips! I'm not sure why, but up until about a year ago I never kept my receipts and I used to impulse buy so, so much. The two things that have really helped me is teaching myself that material things should not be depended on for creating happiness in my life. Through a lot of soul searching I've been able to find happiness in other aspects of my life like my relationships, spending time in nature, etc, so now I don't see the need to buy anything unless I really need it because my happiness doesn't equate to material items (well, almost). As you said, you sometimes still impulse buy and so do I, but I make sure it doesn't negatively financially impact me. For example I will be in target and think something is super cute/cool so I put it in my basket and continue walking around. By the time I've gotten to the check out, the "this is so cute/cool" rush is usually gone and I put it back. Or I'll buy it, keep the receipt and I'll keep the item out on a table or something where I'll see it for a few days. I usually end up returning it after being able to think it through. Therefore, I LOVE my receipts lol and keep a receipt organizer. The entire experience makes me realize that it's okay to say no to myself. Like, who says I need that???? No one's in charge of my brain except me. *I* have the power to be in control of my actions and that's very liberating for me as I didn't feel that way in the past. You're such an inspiration!!

I lost my debit card, so I cancelled it and waited three days to go to my credit union to pick up a new one. In those 3 days I went to my favorite apps probably over 50 times, and that’s being conservative. Because only my old card was linked, (to Target, Amazon, and Walmart) and I hadn’t gone to get my new one, I didn’t purchase anything because I have no other card to use. When I went to the bank and got my card, I didn’t update my shopping apps, as I was too lazy to! So six days later, and over 100 times to those apps to browse and shop, and I still haven’t bought anything!! There’s only one thing in all three shopping carts that I actually was meaning to buy-a Christmas gift for one of my children. This works! “Unhook” your payment cards!

One of my top tips is to go into your email inbox, search for “unsubscribe” which will pull up all marketing emails and then go through and unsubscribe then so you don’t have those emails trying to get you excited to buy new stuff. Even better if you can sort order it by sender so you can work through the sender list quickly (I can’t find a way to do that in gmail so just have to remember which ones I’ve already unsubbed to as I’m working down them)

  • @shiza1011

Lovely video as always!💞 My best tip to add is to just utilize wishlists more. Add to wishlist instead of add to cart can help curb a lot of my impulses and is still fun for retail therapy. Plus you can then wait until something you later decide you do really want goes on sale or delete anything you find you actually don’t want. I’ve found another good way to curb impulse purchases or at least help deal with them while you’re trying to curb them and also just makes shopping less stressful in general for me is to shop at places that just have really good return policies like Target or Costco that will even take things without the tags or outside of the return window and actually start returning stuff instead of just saying eh whatever to them so that you save money by not keeping things you wish you had just returned, save guilt by not looking at as many things with regret, save space by not keeping things that don’t end up working for you, and plus returning stuff is often just annoying lol and so it kind of encourages you to buy less to begin with so that you have less to return later, at least it does for me. Also, I’ve gotten into the habit of checking a place’s return policies BEFORE I buy from them so when I do have items I’m on the fence about I know I have a bit of a safety net. The longer the return window or more flexible the policy or just better the customer service, the better for me as I’m often just very busy so what I do is load up any returns in my car where they’ll sit until I can stop by to return the stuff as I’m already out and about and running errands when I have the time and for places with good return policies, I don’t have to worry as much about getting something returned right away. Also also, personally, I find I rarely will actually ship back returns so I try to buy from places that have locations or at least drop off locations near me to return things to. I used to just think well I can technically return it without stopping to think about whether or not I actually WOULD return it, so identifying and working around my own actual personal tendencies instead of a fantasy version of myself has saved me a lot of money from random internet junk that I realistically will never go through the hassle to return.

    • @Justaregularoldplumbus
      @Justaregularoldplumbus ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes to shopping where returns are easy!! Omg I’m obsessed with returning stuff to amazon, the biggest draw for me is how easy returns are and how they take items back no questions asked. And how at the UPS store you don’t need to pack or label the item just bring it in with no box or anything, hand it to them for free and walk out lol. I feel free, like I can undo any bad decision, honestly I get a rush from turning the item back into money lol. Not an excuse to overspend but just in case, it’s always there. I would like to support more small businesses but the return process for other stores / sites is just so much more difficult. Returns are everything to me, esp when buying online and you need to see the item in person before knowing if you love it or not. I can’t thrift online on Poshmark or Depop anymore because you can’t return items, it was a disaster for me. Thrift irl for clothes, amazon for everything else >_> and Facebook marketplace for furniture has been decent but still a gamble
Edit: also wishlisting is my favorite thing lol. It’s like “zero calorie shopping” if you will 😂

I understand why you do the cash thing, but you really need to be able to use credit properly simply becasue all out world systems depend on it (renting/buying a home, investments, financial planning for education, etc). You should pick a credit card that has no fee, but maybe has a yearly percent back rate so u get some money back, and then you pay off the balance every month. You have to build credit period. The true test would be doing this rather than cash.

And, specifically for food and snacks (like candy), am I gonna eat it all in one day? Is the sugar going to make me happy or feel sick? Lol

Thank you so much for your reminder to have compassion on ourselves. I bought a bunch of new nursing scrubs that I didn't *need* for a new job, and then realized I didn't even really like the new stuff. They were too fitted and stretchy for my taste. Almost $200 gone. When you're generally careful with money, it feels really bad to spend that on something and not like it, but it's so easy to do.

You should do a “PRACTICAL GIFT GUIDE” for Xmas this yr. I can never find a good video for practical items. And I have a feeling you would hit this video request the absolute best! Love your content!

Something that helps me for online shopping is by putting things in a wishlist or the cart to satisfy the impulse but Instead of buying it, I go back after letting it sit and my impulse is over and look at the cart and the cost and see if I actually still need the items in the cart or if I can pair it down or not make a purchase at all.

Don't go into the stores if you do not have to have something don't go because you're bored don't go because there's nothing else to do. Tell yourself you're not allowed to go to the mall you're not allowed to go to TJ Maxx you're not allowed to go to Target doing no buy year challenge. I've been doing this since 2020 I've saved a ton of freaking money!!!

Love these tips! These are so helpful and not the same old same old “stop buying Starbucks coffee” blah, blah

I shop online and fill my cart but then walk away, I always forget what I thought I wanted or needed 🤣😂
