JUST PAID MY LAST HOUSE NOTE! I lost a husband to cancer in 1996. I had 2 kids and a house note, best advice my dying husband said was ‘Always pay more toward the mortgage, even if its $5’. I did and it’s now paid off.
I may have learned this "trick" from my mom and I find myself still doing it as an adult. If I find something I think I want (an unplanned clothes item while I'm at the store for a towel), I leave the impulse item on the rack or shelf and finish my shopping. When I'm ready to checkout, if i remember to go back for the item, I must really want it but if I forget then it probably wasn't really that important to me after all. Just a little psychological trick to test your level of interest which can help dissuade some of those impulse buys.
That's a great idea! I end up with clothes in my cart when I just went to a big box store for dry goods and I always end up putting at least half of the clothing purchases back because I KNOW they're impulse purchases, but that means half are still getting through! I'm going to try this!
For online shopping, I hit the "share" button when I see something I really like, then I send it over to a pinterest board. That way I wont feel like it's gone forever if I dont buy it right then and there. Also gives me time to wait it out, or get it for a gift when I need a gift idea.
Thanks for not being perfect!!!... As in... Perfect nails, perfect Instagram house, perfect anything. It's so nice to see a normal person helping normal people, sharing normal problems and tips to improve. Seriously!!! Thank you!!!
As someone who used to LOVE getting my nails done, it’s something that I absolutely cannot afford. I do my own dip nails now at home, and it’s been such a great hobby. I only buy 1 neutral color for the season (this summer I have white - don’t come for me lol) but they are as hard as acrylic, last for weeks, way tougher then gel nails - which I’ve also used in the past, and more cost efficient. I love art so this also doubles as a hobby for me! I use revel nail dip powders. Check them out sometime if you are ever into that! They saved me SOOOOOOO MUCH $$$$ !!! I know for me I will wear a bun in my hair every day of the week but I like having nicer nails, makes a stay at home mom feel a little bit put together! (:
Here.s how real poor people live. I never ever buy clothes. They are given to me as gifts. Or I only buy a new pair of jeans. When the old ones don't fit anymore. I buy one pair of track shoes a year. Period. My coats last 8 to 10 or more years. Or they were gifted to me. Never buy paper plates. Paper cups. Or plastic silverware. Wash your own real dishes. I never buy paper towel except to clean my toilet and bathroom floor. I don't go to hair salons. I cut my own hair. I do buy new socks and underwear. When I need to. My beauty routine. Grandma's lye soap. Lubridermlotion. Tooth paste. It.s amazing what youcanlive without if you have no money to buy extra things with. Tobegin with. People need to be taught to take care of their clothes. And other things. And everything lasts longer. I own not a single credit card and proud of it.
My problem is shopping apps like facebook marketplace. I always think that I won't buy anything, just looking, then I always see something I can't live without lol. I am going to try not to even open any of them. Wish me luck 😀

Here's a tip about decor. Red party decor can morph for so many typical american holidays: Valentine's, Christmas, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day. It's bold, but if you buy plain pieces you can use them for YEARS.
... and if you don't do any of those holidays, you don't need to buy anything. Just saying... Actually we work on all holidays because it's double pay - so double bonus you get twice the money and save on not spending any for a holidy.
^^^^^ this! I had went with red accents throughout my living room decor ages ago (not because of holidays but b/c I coincidentally decorated this way) and discovered how much I benefitted from this decor choice with the holidays.
Adding that saving your decor year to year helps! I have the same little Halloween chachkies I bring out every year. Maybe I'll add one new thing per year or so, but it's not often since I have all of my lil decor saved up
So, a trick my Mom would use to avoid the "2nd grocery trip" was to pick up milk only from the convenience store. Her logic was that everything there is generally overpriced, and she hated spending more on something that cost less elsewhere. But she said it was better than going to the grocery store and putting up with us wanting everything in the store. She figured the buck she spent extra on the milk saved her 20 bucks at the grocery. I hope this helps!
I've noticed a lot of drug stores don't really charge more for the full gallon, only the smaller sizes. Almost like an entice to bring you in, and these stores help to resist impulse buys, too. Walgreens comes to mind for my area. Their eggs are usually same price, too. And they actually put milk and eggs on sale regularly. The bread, however, is usually higher.
You are so right about these tips. My husband and I have been married for 55 years and more than 40 years ago we started to get serious about spending and saving. We have led a productive and fun filled life, have a large family with kids and grandkids and are debt free. We can spend when we need/want to and not fear the next catastrophe. We are not rich at all, but we are comfortable and happy leading a simple life without money worries.
My tip about not getting takeout is that I cook in advance, when I can. And when I do cook at mealtime, I cook enough for two meals instead of one, at least. Often, needing takeout/eating out is because we don’t have any “ready to eat” foods in the fridge, and don’t feel up to cooking at mealtimes. It’s so much easier when the food is made in advance. It’s healthier, too. That way, when we do go out to eat, it’s purely for the pleasure; instead of convenience.
Same! Me and my partner do our meals for two days, the night before. This way, we have time in the morning and free one evening. We eat take out very rarely, as we prefer to go out when we have time, just like a little celebration. We usually plan it a few days or a week earlier and even our moods get lifted when we discuss what kind of food we might get!
My husband and I would make enough on Monday-Thursday that we could eat leftovers Friday-Sunday. It was a nice break for the weekends. Doesn't work quite as well now that we have an 11-month old and one recipe doesn't QUITE cover two full meals anymore, but we still try to have a similar principle.
My galpal started working from home & paid off her vehicle with just the money she had spent on hair/nails. No one noticed the difference on her Zoom workdays, She DIYed her hair/nails in way less time than going to those appointments. They also did not notice her repeat outfits/jewelry, lesson learned,
Another tip is buy the highest quality product that you can afford. I just convinced my husband to stop buying cheap food choppers (small food processor). I have disabilities that stop me from using my hands a lot so it's a necessity, but cheap $15 choppers suck. I did my research and I convinced him to buy the Cuisinart one. You can buy replacement parts when you buy from reputable companies. You can repair your items if you buy from better companies. They last longer so you buy less when it comes from a reputable company. It's not only cheaper in the long run, but it's better for the environment. I don't regret it and I have no guilt because I knew it was worth every penny.
Yes or buy one expensive kitchen gadget that does 10 things vs 10 cheap kitchen gadgets. I bought a ninja blender a few years back for 250 but it does everything and came with several attachments and blenders. Also have a ninja foodie that was about 200 or so can't remember.. but it's a pressure cooker, slow cooker, air fryer and dehydrator all in one plus more. That's how I justify big purchases.. can it do more than one thing? Then it's worth it. But say 250 for a single-intended use item.. then it's not worth it.
I feel this way about blenders now. I always thought it was crazy to spend so much money on a Vitamix blender as a teen, but now that we have a big Ninja, two NutraBullets, and two off brand mini blenders.... it's safe to say that saving for the Vitamix would've been the smarter, less cluttered move. ^^'
I’d rather shop for multivitamins rather than individually purpose ones. I don’t get them at Costco because who is gonna need that much for a yr or so that before spoiling. I’d rather look for sales on them.
My mother always taught me to ask myself "is it a want or a need?" before buying something. I admit I'm not near as good at it as she is, but the older I get, the more it's becoming a habit because my values are changing.
My mother taught me that when I was about 5 yo. So when my dad took me to the store, my go-to line was "Please Daddy. I neeeed it". Big blue eyes and a trembling lip did the trick every time. I taught my girls that when they started shopping for themselves! Hope this made you 😊. Have a great day!
My mom taught me that it's ok to grab myself a treat every time I go to the store. The difference is, she bought groceries once or twice a month and I do once or twice a week. Thanks mom 😂
My daughter is a fashion design and merchandising major in college, and she NEVER buys fast fashion (and won't let me buy it for her either). Instead she thrifts and tailors things to fit. She looks smashing and creates really interesting, always changing looks. I'm super proud. I should really adopt the cash only habit. My husband's tip is to never do auto pay online. He wants to "feel the pain" of writing that check and seeing the balance take the hit. It helps us keep it in my mind. We are completely debt free, but that doesn't mean I always make the best choices. I'm super guilty of many things on this list. Great tips.
My partner does the never auto paying as well but for me that adds so much stress because then I need to remember to pay. I guess I don't have that many monthly payments anyway :)
Fast fashion comes from the thrift store, and when I’m tired of it, it gets washed and returned to the thrift store! Wardrobe basics like a great cashmere sweater on sale after Christmas, or black wool pants you can wear for any occasion are worth a little more especially if on sale. I have a cashmere loose sweater jacket I bought on sale at Saks Fifth Avenue for around $100. THIRTY-EIGHT years ago! I wear it from October through March. Total backbone piece. Another thing about clothes, I have FINALLY learned some wardrobe “rules” for myself and I never buy them because they do not, and never will, work for me. Things like white tops, tailored button shirts with no spandex, shorts, sleeveless…haha, certain colors that just don’t work for me! As I get older, I know what I can get away with, and the list grows shorter every year!
I went through a period when I bought thrifted things that I ended up not using. I succumbed to the internal narrative of "but it's thrifted and only $3" - and those $3 pieces added up. So now I go in with the type of clothing I need - say if it's a blazer, no rummaging through the pants aisle. If it doesn't fully fit (because sometimes it'd be just a tad tight) or work with other pieces in my wardrobe I won't buy it. Even if it's only $3.
Such good advice. There is only so much room in my closet and everything I buy is a replacement piece. I find getting rid of thing so uncomfortable that I shop VERY carefully.
@@crazy4beatles so true! I’m realistically not going to dye a blah color skirt, I’m probably not going to paint a funky dresser, or re-structure an overly bulky skirt! But I did buy a $10 alpaca coat that need a new lining. It WAS a project, but I’ve worn that coat for 15 years now. You do get to a point where you pick your projects very carefully!😜
Great advice. My aunt used to say that her clothes were so old that they were made in the USA. When I worked and everyone had nice jewelry, I purchased a pair of diamond stud earrings - even fake diamonds would work as well. I wear them every day to every occasion. Those earrings have saved me tons of money and time, because I don't need any others.
here's my tip bout shopping out of boredom...when that temptation hits me...I find something I own that I don't really need and I list it on ebay, or poshmark or mercari. It takes some time and makes you feel like you accomplished something. Plus, $$ coming my way!
My tip is always save your receipt and buy from places with good return policies! Y'all let's be real, no one is perfect and we all buy something we don't need sometimes, but keeping it is just solidifying the mistake. Two wrongs don't make a right! There's no shame in swinging by that store the next time you're passing by and returning those unopened items you feel buyer's remorse over. This has really helped me save money and also helps combat that sense of shame over mistakes in shopping because it gives realistic perspective - no biggie, just return it and undo the mistaken impulse buy, problem solved. I hope this helps!
And/or, if you tend to lose the receipts like I do, take a photo of the receipt immediately with your phone :) That way you still can return the items even if you've lost the receipt.
I started having milk delivered because that's exactly what would happen to me and I couldn't be happier. I'm supporting a local business, the milk is so good and sometimes I don't go to the grocery store for weeks. In fact, I won't even touch grocery store milk anymore. Nothing beats farm fresh.
My daughter who lives in Colorado gets her milk delivered and when I visit I get to enjoy it. So true, farm fresh is SO delicious!! (and it’s delivered in glass jars which I love)
A tip shared to me by my coworker: When window shopping or going to a store to waste time, leave your wallet in the car! You are waaaaay less likely to actually buy things because it would require you to go out, get your wallet, and come back in. But, if you do find something you genuinely need, it is still available to you.
Lockdown really got me to revaluate what is completely necessary for spending. My grocery list has definitely changed to add more wholefoods and I'm using cheaper but responsibly sourced makeup!
Oh man the influence thing!! We will have our cars paid off next year and I was legit thinking about using the extra money to buy a bigger nicer newer home we don't need, just because of some TH-cam Mamas with fancy cabinets! Thanks for the shot in the ass I needed to snap me out of those thoughts. I love my small simple house, and my tiny mortgage!!
I have listened to so many videos and read so many articles about saving money but this is literally the first one that has ever made sense to me and more importantly, didn't make me feel bad about myself. Thank you!! I'm sharing this with my 19 year old son as I think it's a great way for him to start his financial life, simple, practical and still allows him to be human!
I am SO HAPPY you mentioned fast fashion oh my gosh!! 😁 I worked in retail for about 7 years and it was no biggie for me to buy an absurd amount of clothes, even when they were on clearance. I have really taken a step back these past few years though and created a capsule wardrobe with staple pieces that I truly enjoy. I get compliments on my clothes all the time and I truly enjoy thrifting at local second hand shops! Not only has this minimalistic approach been applied to my wardrobe but also my home decor. It's less to tidy and helps ease much mind while at home. While my own family and friends aren't really keen on it, I feel like what I am doing is best. 😊
As a shopaholic that caught myself spending out of bordem i found instead if just spending money on random temporarily highs that i questioned later what purpose they serve. I found it helpful to invest in a new craft or hobby. Not collecting things as a hobby but something to use your hands to make stuff expecially if your interested in crocheting or something that can be inexpensive to buy supplies. Its helpful so your not bored but also next time you go to the store you can buy a new skein of yarn or some jewelry findings that will become part of a scheduled shopping instead if random things you wanted in the moment. (Stay away from resin its a very expensive craft) ive done alot if different kinds so i hope this helps
Avoid buying stuff. In installments. If we can’t buy in full-price right now, don’t buy….. I really love this idea. Another point, don’t feel guilt if you already made some financial mistake in past , try to work on it now. I really live these suggestions, I may not remember exact wording of your video, but really like your suggestions.
One useful thing re:debt is to think twice about charging something you don't need, but want,in order to make you happy for an hour. Look at the item, then take 30 seconds to visualize making out a paper application for a LOAN in that store! It's the best way to remind yourself that you're taking out a loan every time you swipe a Credit Card. I'm talking Macy's and jewelry "sales" here,LOL
As a single mom I HAD to be frugal. I had 1 income coming in so I rarely got new store bought clothes. But I learned to sew & always had something "new" if I wanted it! 😊 I often joked my house was decorated "a la Goodwill"! And I have never been insecure about whether or not friends like my home. It is MY home after all. Were anyone to criticize or pressure me--they would no longer be welcome!!!
I was watching an organization video and the person suggested "shop your house first" for containers, baskets and decor items. I thought that is a good suggestion for any purchases. I often stock up on sales when I have a few extra dollars. I have also been given craft supplies, and other items I kept. So if I run out of something or think I need to buy an item, I shop my house first. I usually find I have more or something that will due. It has definitely put more dollars back in my pocket.
Hearing that you have made some less than smart purchase decisions in the past or lost things in the house and bought again for disorganization makes me feel so much better about myself. I tend to feel shame for everything and it causes such anxiety and hard to then correct mistakes.
I totally feel you, ordering take out feels like treating yourself especially when you’re overwhelmed, one thing that has helped me is ordering fewer items, maybe getting a burger and then not ordering fries, but rating a baked potato I made myself. That way I spend less and don’t feel like I’m depriving myself.
Great advice, something I wished I'd learned years ago. Now that I'm decluttering, I have totally lost interest in shopping...just gives me a "yucky" feeling, (not sure if it has a name) but all I can think of is why would I want to buy all this stuff , just to have to turn around and donate it?
Lost interest to even go into woman's clothing stores. I only wear my classic pieces now, don't care about trends anymore. The fewer things I have, the less I have to take care of.
The last subscription that I had was for "Glamour" magazine in the 1980s! I don't have cable t.v, & don't even own a t.v set. My couch is 29 years old & still looks brand new. My bedroom furniture is also 30 years old. I don't drink coffee or any alcohol, no chewing gum- I could go on & on. I retired at a young age. I have never paid interest on anything. Things are expensive enough without paying more for interest!
Thank you! About to over haul my life by selling my house, getting out of debt and starting the budget over!! Divorced and still learning but with accts like yours, hope is alive! I may may mistakes, but I can fix them!!
I discovered a subscription that I thought I canceled. 8 months in, I was annoyed with myself and thought that $ was gone. I contacted the vendor and they were able to see that I hadn't used their service. I was pleasantly surprised they refunded the money. Not sure how many companies would have done that, but it was worth it to send a simple, polite, tweet to get that $64 refunded. 😊
I remember seeing an app or website that would find things that you weren’t using and then with just a click or it would show you a list would i Unsubscribe you from them. But for the life of me I can’t think of what it is called?
Great video and advice. As I find myself getting older, seeing my parents and grandparents aging I am realizing that the stuff I accumulated when I was younger doesn't mean so much now. And I look at the stuff and I'm like I really didn't need that and look at all the wasted money. Yes I did enjoy the things that I had and always loved finding that special thing, but now I know that I need to downsize and I need other people to enjoy the things that I have. Some things are very hard to let go of especially if it has a memory attached to it but you have the memory and that's what counts. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
I am 57 years old. I window shop. I wish shop. I don’t purchase. I take pictures. Before phones I wrote descriptions of things I liked. Sometimes did little drawings of things I liked. Sounds stupid I know. Go home and look at them. 9.999999 out of 10 I do not buy the stuff. I really think hard about things before I buy. If it’s sold out when I go back, I guess it was not meant to be and I did not really need it. I do not impulse buy!! I had massive credit card debt when I was younger. I also taught myself how to shop or how not to shop!! Lol. This works for me.
Big question..... how do i successfully STOP buying chocolate AND peanut m and ms? I know i don't need it, my weight goes up, but i cannot resist when it comes on sale. HELP
I love this! I feel like this is how I use Pinterest, all the things I love, but can't afford or have no actual use for. Just pretty pictures to look at whenever I want.
I'm 80 years old and this is the best advice I've seen yet. Well balanced and real. I can certainly use some of these tips....especially the buying from boredom. I'm talking to YOU Amazon! LOL Thanks.
What the pandemic taught me was that having an organized surplus is a fabulous luxury that I can give myself. All that extra stuff hanging out in closets and cabinets can really be helpful during hard times. It also helped me see what I had and what I needed more of. I do not need any more makeup or hair products of any kind. But I use more paper towels than I thought (my washing machine isn't always reliable). Hard work but worthwhile. I gathered it all KonMari style, organized it and assessed it. Well worth my time.
I love that ending statement. What works for others and their families may not work for you and that's totally okay. I say this all the time. I pretty much live by it. Everyone does things their way...doesn't mean your way is wrong. ❤
@@lindadavidson2237 I never really have, but I'm really bad about buying something I think will make a great gift for someone, putting it in my gift closet, then completely forgetting I have it.
As someone who is doing this not only because saving, but because it’s better for the planet, I appreciate this video! 💕 I stopped buying so many things, and replaced them with reusable versions. And I shop secondhand first, always! Clothes, decor, you’ll be surprised what you can find, and the Environmental footprint is minimal 😊 plus I stopped overbuying when “use what you already have at home” resonated with me.
I live on a fixed income, so I learned how to upcycle and recycle clothes and furniture. Weddings can be expensive for the couple and the guests as well. Girl, I wore the same Little Black Dress to 4 different weddings, I just accessorized differently. Don't ask, don't tell. Thanks for the great tips. Keep safe ♡ ♥💕❤😘
When I got married last year, I simply asked that the guys wore dark blue or purple ties, and the gals wore dark blue and/or purple dresses. While those options are still rather narrow, I wasn't about to ask that everybody matches perfectly. Far as I know, most of them didn't need to buy anything new. (my mom did for fun, though).
I know this video is a year old but I really love how you tackled the idea of overspending, connected it to your life and changed, and still didn't shame people who were trying their best or just trying to get out of the cycle of overspending. Love the way you framed things!!
I agree with everything! The only thing I do differently is that I use a credit card for everything to get the cash back rewards and I never, ever carry a balance. Not even for a week. I've never had an interest charge payment. I only spend it if I have the money to immediately pay it off. So, kind of like cash (because I won't spend it if I don't have it to transfer over immediately) but on my Cash Rewards card for the cash back. That way, you're making money off the bank!
Great tips Kallie. I SO agree with the “no browsing” in stores. Even if you must go in there - get what you need and get out! I liked what you said about being influenced by others. When I discovered essential oils I suddenly had to buy heaps of them instead of just starting with one or two. I do the same with make up when I find a lipstick I like. I need to buy all the colours. Slow down girl! 😆
I would disagree a bit about using credit cards. Credit cards with a great points system will actually reward you with more cash by simply using your credit card. Of course you need to make sure you pay off your bill completely each month and keep tabs on all if your purchases. By paying it off completely each month you’ll build up your credit and get the points on purchase which can help pay for vacations or groceries etc.
I agree with using credit cards with cash back rewards. I pay the balance in full every month, always have. I use the rewards for things like buying joint supplements for my dog, iron supplements for my anemia or an occasional gift for me on my wish list.
Something I do for that is only use my credit card if I have the money to pay it off in my checking account. And then I pay it off immediately. Also if points are involved, I buy with my credit card what was already planned in my budget (groceries, gas, etc). So I’m all for point but I think it’s important to only buy with a credit card if you have the cash for it
I used to agree with the credit card thing. It gif really easy for me swipe my card away at any number. Though I do pay back in full, it took a hit at my savings that I just did not need
Thank you for your inspiring videos! 😀👍 In order to stay away from unnecessary (impulse-)purchases it could be helpful to calculate how many hours you have to work for it, in many cases the items feel instantly much less attractive.
Awesome! We’ve been “trying “ to get out of debt for about 5 years now 🙃 We start to budget.. but NEVER stick to it. I need to look at myself and NOT at my spouse first, and acknowledge that we are both responsible for this mess. We will get there! Hopefully sooner than later. Blessings! Kristina
I never stick to budget either so I found another method : instead of planning in advance, I count everything at the end of the month so it shows me instantly where I spent to much and where it was actually fine. That way I can keep track and improve month after month. My banker has actually complemented me because I knew exactly where my money was going and how to improve, and I don’t feel the pressure of budgeting and losing the battle every month anymore.
I love this kind of material! I am strongly thinking about going minimalist (or at least the broader end of minimalism) because my health is just not letting me clean and be as productive as I want to be. I'm tired and regularly in physical pain, but things need to get done. Your content really inspires me to get my life in shape before I do the marriage, kids, and mortgage dance. Going into that without a plan is not good for me, my spouse, and any children I have.
All such useful tips! They used to call it "keeping up with the Joneses"! My Mom and Dad taught us this lesson, along with avoiding impulse buying, extra trips to the grocery store, paying cash and limiting time payments, etc. growing up in the 50s and 60s. They grew up in the Depression, so it was second nature to them. You are a wise young woman!
Wow! You are so wise! I have watched some of your posts and you changed my life. I was never taught how to do domestic things. My mom and grandmother did everything so I had to figure it out, which is not that good lol. This post is so helpful. You said the things that will help, because it's things I don't really think about. I am going to share your post to help others like me who are not good at keeping a house organized and running.
I invested in an Epilator! Instead of razors, the epilator plugs into an outlet and last forever as long as you take-care of it. It hurts like heck at first, but like waxing the hairs grow out so slowly with time!
oh my god same I originally bought one because I have really bad razor burn but saved so much money on razors. you’re so right about it hurting like hell tho 😂
I use an epilator too, but first use the shaving head and then the epilator to get rid of the small stubborn ones. Takes more time but saves a lot of pain.
Totally guilty about purchasing something....and I finally found the same thing in my closet... Thanks for keeping us all accountable!! Keep safe and healthy!
U sound so much realistic.. someone so much like us, someone who changed herself from where we are now!! Ur tips sound easy to follow and not out of the world.
I agree some middle and upper-income folks live above their means, for sure. And also -- In the US, we are the only developed nation without a universal health insurance program. People are going bankrupt from medical debt, more so than consumer debt or drinking too much Starbucks. And this is even if they have insurance... with high deductibles and co--pays, it's still far too expensive for all but upper-income folks. We are also the only developed nation without paid maternity and/or paternity leave. Add to that a $7.25 federal minimum wage and schools in poorer areas being poorly funded -- and it's no wonder some folks live "above their means." Their "means" simply aren't enough to have a decent, basic life. So absolutely, if you earn enough to pay the rent and buy the bare basics, and you are pissing away money instead, then you have a problem. But many folks in the US simply don't earn enough and with the state of child and health care -- it's very difficult to ever get ahead. It's expensive to be poor.
@@sherylporter9557 I wish more Americans were shocked and demanded better and only voted for representatives and senators who wanted a universal, single-payer system. We are the only developed nation where you can lose everything you have over medical debt. In the wealthiest nation on earth. It's plain greed.
People have always lived above their means, it's just more evident today b/c of social media. It's hard to be a young person, just starting out, and having to do without all the things you grew up with at your parents. Social media puts all that in their faces and makes it hard to say no. Young people, and all people, need encouragement and understanding to do hard things.
@@centeredclayworks4571 Sure, people always have. AND -- college has never been this expensive, the min wage has never been this low compared to the cost of living, and health care has never been more unaffordable. Ditto childcare. It's the perfect storm to impoverish folks.
Thanks for the vid! My hubbie and I made mistakes early on. We are now completely debt free, home included. And our 22 year old son paid cash for his first home. Both of our boys remain debt free as they learn and live life, cars and everything. Congrats on your financial freedom! Small changes work best for most people. As a dietitian, I encourage small changes when possible. Kidney failure requires immediate, life-saving changes, but bit by bit is best for anyone. It becomes a lifestyle change.
All our friends have redone their kitchens. Big awesome modern kitchens. When we bought our house, the question was “What are you going to do with that ugly 80s kitchen?” Nothing. Everything works. It isn’t modern but we have what we need. It’s been 4 years and a friend recently told us how she kinda loves how we’ve just embraced the house as it is. And that our kitchen is homey and “vintage.” Haha. 80s is vintage now. Anyway, no need to blow a bunch of money on something that functional and well kept. 😊
Great list of advice! A long time ago I decided to stop spending money on: -nail salon trips -tanning sessions -fashion jewelry/accessories -an access of scented lotions/sprays -clothes that I wouldnt wear on a regular basis (like a cute dress with no place to wear it). -prestigious/expensive makeup items (too many good dupes out there to justify it).
Great video, thank you! So many great suggestions, but what really resonated was #13 spending money based on other people's lives. Beware of social media, influencers are paid to make you spend money! I took notes and will share these tips with my kids, ages 21 and 22, avoiding bad habits while spending smart really makes a difference!
You look amazing for having an infant in the house. Boy i remember those days . I was 19 with my 1st baby girl. I had P.PD bad had no idea what that was but id be crying as she cried changing her diaper. My husband was no help i was exhausted and had my boob in her ear not mouth when nursing her at 330 am. Lol by baby number 3 and 35 yrs old i was literally SUPERMOM. thanku for all the advice!!! I have been on board with this for a year now its lifechanging. It helps with way more than just your fianances. Im so proud of my home its zero clutter and takes hours to clean now not the entire weekend. I cut out all my monthly subscriptions too. What a waste. I wasn't using the majority of them 40$ month. I can't wait to switch to the razor and meal planning is HUGE !! I WAS THE 2ND TRIP SPENDER MY SOLUTION SEND YOUR HUSband he will only come back with the milk.
I am currently doing the 30-day minimalism game and this is bringing me to make other decisions like spend for only what I need (clothes) and buy less but buy quality.
Wish I had been this smart when I was your age!! I’m no longer in debt but it was a long and rocky road getting there. And kudos to you for powering through when your baby wasn’t cooperating with your schedule!!
1. Eating out and take out. 2. Fast fashion. 3. Accessories. 4. One time purchases. 5. Purchasing on credit cards. 6. Anything with interests. 7. Monthly subscriptions. 8. Disposable razors. 9. The "second grocery trips". 10. Being disorganized. 11. Living up to others' expectations. 12. Buying out of boredom. 13. Buying based on other people's lives.
Kallie, as far as the disposable razors go, i haven't bought any new blades in over a year. when the ones i have (i kept 3- 1 for husband, 2 for me) start to get dull, i just swipe them with the grain of a pair of denim jeans about 40 times and then clean them off with rubbing alcohol to sanitize and they end up sharper than they were when i bought them brand new. one of the most efficient personal hacks i've learned over my 7 years of marriage and having to pay for things ourselves. i definitely recommend this!
Very practical & realistic- I'm guilty of all of them! But your FORGIVING APPROACH to YOURSELF & OTHERS are a key to being success ful on your goals. Having a unhealthy GUILT will prevent U from that. I go over the deep end on reckkess spending & then I feel so bad about my lack of discipline that I get stuck/ paralyzed to get going on action. That does mean that gives U the excuse not to get back on board- but feelings of confidence & worth in your self will make the difference .
Callie, your video clip inserts are hysterical. We saved by buying our cars used, with as low miles as possible, and then driving them as long as possible after we’ve paid them off.
Fashion designer here. Buy WELL MADE fine quality items that go with everything and can be interchangeable. That’s how I stay stylish. For instance a staple cashmere blend coat not only looks tailored and timeless but lasts a long time and can be dressed up or down. Same with leather shoes. They last a life time and can be resoled. Buying quality items not only reduces ur carbon footprint but is easy on the wallet and stops garbage quality items from ending up in landfills. This is how I live my life. I don’t have many clothes just samples from my collections I wear once in a while.
I stopped buying any clothes/shoes/accessories back in January. And omg!! How much money have I saved! Instead what I’m doing is saving $1,000 for the year to splurge next year throughout the year on clothes or things I want to buy cash. 😁
I personally practice a lot of things you suggested. It helps me so much in managing my finance. Never had credit cards in my life yet I travel and enjoy. But the best feeling is I don’t owe to anyone. A lot of the tips were taught to me and my mother by my late father. He was smart and always planned ahead. Was lovely to see someone give validation to some if things I do to improve me and my families lifestyle. ❤️🥰🌸
I really needed this today, thank you. I'm off to my bedroom to declutter, organize closets/drawers/ clothes/shoes, the whole works. I've been putting it off for too long - your trigger for me was organize! It's time I did something for myself. Today is going to be a good day !
I bought so much on-line out of not being able to sleep at night 😒 finally, I would just put stuff in my cart (that I thought I needed, more like WANTED) and would decide in the morning when having my coffee, if I wanted to purchase the stuff in my cart. 90 percent of the time I never did 😉. Thanks for your videos! They have helped 😊
I do something like this. I noticed that a lot of times I would buy late at night because I was bored. Now, I can't buy anything after a certain time. I need to wait, and more often than not I end up not buying what is in my cart or save for later list. It's really helped kick a bad habit
Amazing video! You’re so realistic. I love how nothing here was sponsored, it makes your video more authentic. And you know how sometimes it’s hard to say no to certain things. I noticed I already did some of these things because I am lazy and don’t like going out shopping but a lot of things I needed to do like cutting back on groceries/ take out and also being more organized ☺️
When I was in my 30s, my husband and I had a lot of credit card debt, it was killing us. We paid it all off and never charged anything else again except online purchases that we paid off monthly in full (AMEX) or with our debit card. When you have no credit card debt, you can actually pay for things because you have the money! You also become more picky about what you buy because you never want to be in debt again! Your channel has great tips!
I like this video a lot more than I thought I would, I just have 2 comments. 1) credit cards are a great asset for saving when you have a cash back card with no annual fee and pay it in full every month. In our house, we have the capital one savor, quick silver and Wells Fargo active cash cards. Over the span of 3 months with our normal purchases we usually end up getting $150 (at the low end) back with no skin off our nose. 2) I totally agree with your last point of not having to go with someone else’s lifestyle, but I would add that if you think through it for a while and really do want to go with their lifestyle, a good way to save money is to do it slowly, as you run out of things. IE- only buy the jackets she does when your kids grow out of theirs and only use the essential oil cleaner when you run out of the one you have. Don’t replace things, just change what you buy going forward.
These are hard truths. It is so difficult for me to stick to a budget. I constantly buy new clothes and recently bought a new car. I am proud of you that you are able to stay on track.
Awesome video, friend! I’m finishing my 3rd year of my career, just bought my first home, and am working on tackling debt and living below my means. And girl I felt so convicted when you said “second grocery trip” 😳
We keep powdered milk on hand and mostly use milk in recipes, never thought about it as avoiding the second grocery trip but glad it helps me save cash money! I also have to be careful with thrifting, it can be great to find stuff on a deal when you were going to buy it anyway but buying for the deal is a rabbit hole
I have a similar problem and started thrifting. I have found so many items that have only been worn once or even new with tags. Helps save money when your size changes or if you feel like getting some new clothes without the big $$ spent.
I change weight often because I am in the child bearing stage of life. I try my best to keep only clothes that fit my body both ways. Things that are flattering to my body during pregnancy and beyond. I am currently pregnant and bought 3 maternity items second hand but aside from that am using my normal wardrobe that will still fit when baby comes and I loose weight.
Shop at Thrift stores. You’ll save so much money and it helps the environment. There are many high quality garments donated by people like us who fluctuate in weight.
As many have mentioned below, thrifting for clothes has been amazing! Saving money while helping the planet, and you're able to switch out items more frequently if you want since you spent less to begin with and can just donate back. Can become a slippery slope though since you can get so much for so cheap. That and Poshmark if you're looking for a specific piece. Love your videos as always! Yes, the subscriptions I see ads for are ridiculous nowadays. Congrats on your successful finance journey and making so many wise decisions!
JUST PAID MY LAST HOUSE NOTE! I lost a husband to cancer in 1996. I had 2 kids and a house note, best advice my dying husband said was ‘Always pay more toward the mortgage, even if its $5’. I did and it’s now paid off.
Congratulations!! That’s great 👏👏👏
Well done. That's a amazing. 🏠
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fantastic! God bless you!
Congrats! 😄😄🎉🎉I can't wait for that moment myself 😄
Mine is that I ask myself "Will I die if I don't buy this?" Most of the time it's "Nope." Then i move on..
I also learnt this from my mum! I've passed it into a lot of friends over the years, best bit of shopping advice I've ever come across:)
Love this! Gonna try.
Thanks for not being perfect!!!... As in... Perfect nails, perfect Instagram house, perfect anything. It's so nice to see a normal person helping normal people, sharing normal problems and tips to improve.
Seriously!!! Thank you!!!
Yassss 🙌🏾! So refreshing.

You just saved me from spending $100+ on a fast fashion website. Everytime I get the itch to spend, I watch videos like this to slap me back to earth.
As someone with ADHD I feel this. I never thought of watching videos like this to snap me out if it. Thanks for the healthy tip

I have red plates too! It always looks festive and inviting.
Lol I have done the same thing .. u are so right .. I’ll use it ,even when having people over like with my polo dot plates black and white
I hope this helps!
clever
Great idea thanks God bless you
i was thinking the same thing 🎉🎉🎉
Very helpful tip! I'll be doing that from now on
I've noticed a lot of drug stores don't really charge more for the full gallon, only the smaller sizes.
Yep, and I keep one freezer stovetop meal for emergencies when I've run out of something or am tired of what I just had
My brother gifted us an Instant Pot and it has been a game changer!
Yup i cook breakfast and lunch in the morning, lunch and dinner i can just sit down and eat the same thing
If the pandemic taught me anything it's that you really don't need that many clothes.
Also learned I don't need ALOT of things I used to purchase mindlessly
My galpal started working from home & paid off her vehicle with just the money she had spent on hair/nails. No one noticed the difference on her Zoom workdays, She DIYed her hair/nails in way less time than going to those appointments. They also did not notice her repeat outfits/jewelry, lesson learned,
Omg
Yes!!! 🤣❤️
Truth!! I’ve lost my diva status!!🤭😆
This!
Me too! We have so many “adaptive” tools, especially in the kitchen.
I read a saying somewhere on youtube... "we are too poor to buy cheap things..." if only vendors would make all items high-quality...
"Do I really need it? No." Then I don't buy it. It's worked for me for years.
I also ask: do I already own something I could use with a small tweek
Thank you. Very interesting. I I recently brought white shirts n dresses. Blazer was different things I'm wearing on chilly nights out.
Done that too thankyou for mentioning this.
Actually..this is a fun idea! Imma try it. Thanks!
Actually excellent. Also the effort of doing this will make me question if I want to replace the space I just created
I like to go to the library for impulse shopping feeling. You get to take something home and it’s free,
That's a great idea!
Hmm considering buying a goat. N chickens
The milk man still exists?? Or are you using a delivery app.
@@kenzzom.2922 The milkman still exists in NE Colorado.
in the Seattle area we have one!
I like that
I can't tell you how many times my own laziness has saved me money! make sure your wallet isn't in plain sight if you leave it outside, though!
@@kelseycoca stick it in your trunk.

Lockdown really got me to revaluate what is completely necessary for spending. My grocery list has definitely changed to add more wholefoods and I'm using cheaper but responsibly sourced makeup!
Where do you find your make-up? Thanks!
Also curious about the makeup you use! :D
Good for you and I am sure you look just as beautiful!

Good job! We sold our big fancy house bc of job stuff and now feel better about not having that high mortgage. Next one will be cheaper
A bigger house is just more house to have to furnish, clean, and maintain.
@@susie7336 and pay utilities on! Plus I like the idea of crowded family Christmas. Nobody can go hide with their cell phone!!!

IMO, thrift decor is better. No matchy matchy
Good job there! Wait a go!
Thanks for the advice. I never thought of it that way before.

Same here. Now everything has to be practical and hopefully multi purpose
We’re cheering for you!
Absolutely, we never used to go over our statements until we found this kind of thing-those unused subscriptions do add up.
That happened to me with audible premium- no clue how I got signed up but I never used the service and I was refunded $90
Or something

Unsubscribe you from them.
You know a video is good when you know that you’ve seen it before but still want to watch it again! Great tips!! 🤗🤗

I love to window shop too. It's one of my hobbies. Most of the time I don't buy anything, but I just like to look at all the pretty things.
I'm 80 years old and this is the best advice I've seen yet. Well balanced and real. I can certainly use some of these tips....especially the buying from boredom. I'm talking to YOU Amazon! LOL Thanks.
Amazon is so dangerous!!!!
I buy red paper plates also. Great with green for Christmas, with blue 4th of July. With yellow for spring. With orange for fall.
How miserable!
I love using curbside pickup to cut out impulse buys.
Excellent tip!

I wear the same fancy dresses a few times. Mostly because my hubs won’t let me part with them.
My mom eventually realized, she had worn the same favorite dress for a dozen years, decided she'd gotten her money's worth out of it.
To save on that “just milk” grocery trip: only walk in the store with a $10 bill, no wallet, no purse.
Yup! This right here!!⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️. Only go in with the cash in hand, it stops me from buying EVERYTHING I see🤣🤣
That's a great idea!
I tried this last week and literally went back out to the car to grab more money lol
Yep that’s what I do cash only. Don’t put extra in the car.
Nice, yes 👍
By paying it off completely each month you’ll build up your credit and get the points on purchase which can help pay for vacations or groceries etc.
yeah i get cash back too. its nice to get something back for things you are going to buy like groceries!
I can't stand buying things in cash and then tallying a chking account every month with hundreds of purchases.
Credit cards give you cash back
Thank you for your inspiring videos! 😀👍
In order to stay away from unnecessary (impulse-)purchases it could be helpful to calculate how many hours you have to work for it, in many cases the items feel instantly much less attractive.
I really appreciate the "owning up without shaming" thing! Makes you reflect on it, but without the overwhelming guilt 😊
Awesome!
We’ve been “trying “ to get out of debt for about 5 years now 🙃
We start to budget.. but NEVER stick to it.
I need to look at myself and NOT at my spouse first, and acknowledge that we are both responsible for this mess.
We will get there! Hopefully sooner than later.

Write everything down
Make lists
Grocery $$$
Hydro $$$$
Phones $$$$
Clothes $$$
Reassess constantly
You all get there!!!
Living the cash life is the best! Last year we paid off our house too and it is the best feeling. Good luck with tackling that goal!

I love this kind of material!

I’ve learned that ordering my groceries on line and picking them up saves me so much money. I don’t impulse buy anymore.
Avoid delivery charges if you can, they add $10.00 to every order I make online for that.

Having powdered milk on hand can really save you from the "second grocery trip." They put that milk at the back of the store for a reason! ;)

The problem with today’s society is people live above their means
@@womanofacertainage5892 I live in Australia and have always been shocked to think the U.S. don't have a national health care scheme. 😟

-nail salon trips
-tanning sessions
-fashion jewelry/accessories
-an access of scented lotions/sprays
-clothes that I wouldnt wear on a regular basis (like a cute dress with no place to wear it).
-prestigious/expensive makeup items (too many good dupes out there to justify it).

The transition from talking about how subscriptions bleed us dry..... to advertising a subscription service. Priceless.

Yes, my dad used to say, "I can't afford to save that much money." :)
My number one bad shopping habit is SHOPPING for clothes. I constantly change weight and I’m never comfortable in my clothes 😩
