  • Finally we're driving a classic Datsun 510 on the twisty back-roads and enjoying every minute! This 4-door example has been modified extensively for the track and has accepted no substitute in the pursuit of ultimate driving pleasure. With a fully stripped interior, roll cage, racing seats, suspension, sticky tires, and a high-revving, period correct, N/A engine, this Datsun 510 is just about as good as classic motoring gets. Enjoy!

    Hard to beat the sound of an N/A L series with side drafts and free flow exhaust. No matter what the power plant, I'm always psyched to see a 510 build done well. I TOTALLY respect what Roads Untraveled is doing, and it was a gas watching the reviewer start to get a sense of what a well sorted 510 is capable of. It's completely accurate the way he describes the steering as feeling heavy. You expect understeer, but applying more input, it just keeps gripping. The amazing thing is, when it does finally break loose there's no drama. Ease up on the gas, grip comes back and off you go. If you're powering too hard out of a corner and the back comes out, lighten your grip on the wheel, let up on the gas, let the wheel find grip and the car will recover itself like magic. Note, you need to be running plenty positive caster to do this.
    No matter what, jumping from hyper tech modern cars to an older no tech car there's going to be a bit of a learning curve. When a novice reviews a 50 year old Japanese icon like the 510 though, there's always going to be assholes like me who have to correct them.
    1. Just because you can buy a JDM Bluebird Coupe emblem on Ebay doesn't mean it belongs an a North American market four door PL 150 sedan's grill. Bad mogo
    2. Calling out ITBs when referring to side drafts is like pointing out hooves when referring to horses. It's a given, not a unique feature.
    3. That is not a six point "full roll cage", it's a four point bolt in rear cage.
    Now I'll climb down off my high horse and say Than You for a great vid man.

      The Bluebird badge is there just because I was taking after the white bird and thought it was cool. The Datsun grill badge was mashed in an accident.

    I would argue that a few pounds of thermal/sound protection placed in the right spots reduces driver fatigue, gives better situational awareness and makes you more in tune with what the chassis is doing by being less bombarded with engine/transmission noise. You can hear your tires breaking sooner, giving you better reaction times. Just a thought.

    Now bear with me, because I know the stigma that comes with this statement, but my 97 Civic coupe makes 508 whp and with me in it, it weighs 2458. It doesn't have some ridiculous body kit (because this isn't 1998) and it has a factory Si wing, and it was built to be a show car as well as a powerful monster. I'm 34 and this is my 53rd car since I was 14, and it's everything I've ever wanted in an import. I love it, and I did it ALL myself. 1.8L DOHC block, Eagle rods, Wiseco pistons, ARP rod studs, main studs, head studs, flywheel bolts, pressure plate bolts, timing tensioner bolt, underdrive pulley bolt, JDM B18C Type-R head, PLM top mount turbo manifold, PLM 3" turbo back cat-less exhaust, Turbonetics 60-1 Hifi, 22 psi, FID 1000cc injectors, E85 tuned on Crome Gold, and way too much more to list in a YT Comment. I built it, I bodyworked it, and I painted it. It's my version of a dream Honda. I built it because of the hate that Hondas get from the boy ricers. I love my car. I know that you would love it. If you're ever in Pittsburgh, let me know.

    I have a 1968 Datsun 510 with the SR20DET swap 325hp on pump 400 plus HP on E85 or race fuel. My son and I built it ourselves $20K in parts well worth it, its my Hayabusa on four wheels. We have tracked it but because its modified way beyond stock we have to race in the unlimited modified group. With the five speed trans and stock RR we hit 148 mph on the front straightaway at AAA auto raceway in Fontana Ca. ran out of gear not horsepower. Wicked.

    From another 510 lifer, Norman did one hell of a job on his 69. LOVE that he kept the stock speedo, but could have done without the addition of Bluebird badging on a four door PL510. Us old guys who grew up driving these purely analog non-power assist/override anything cars learned to read the road by what the car was telling us. Once you tune into this experience you can do things a fly by wire modern car can't. I realize new cars are easier and more forgiving making it safer to drive, but that takes so much away from the real diving experience IMO. Spend some time behind the wheel of a light little Japanese classic and when you nail a corner and feel it in your naughty bit's you'll know the difference.
    This kid drove mine and couldn't stop giggling.

    • @stephengobbi7993
      @stephengobbi7993 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      False. There is an individual throttle plate for each cylinder (each carb has 2 throttles 2x2=4). ITBs aren't exclusive to EFI.

      Stephen Gobbi No, im sorry but you're mistaken. ITBS arent exclusive to efi, but they are exclusive to injection, which this isnt. A throttle/throttle plate/throttle valve is not a throttle body. People quite commonly get the two confused. A throttle plate in a carb is a butterfly that draws in a mixture of air and fuel due to the pressure caused by a venturi. A throttle body is a butterfly valve with fuel injection occuring after the butterfly and relative to how far it is open.

      Stephen Loera TH-cam cut off half of my comment, but I have already explained the difference: A throttle plate in a carb is a butterfly that draws in a mixture of air and fuel due to the pressure caused by a venturi. A throttle body has a butterfly valve with fuel injection occuring after the butterfly and relative to how far it is open. They are very different. This datto does not have itbs.

    First video of yours that I have seen, and probably the last. When you do a car review, you want to actually review the car you are driving. You seemed to toss a bunch of buzz words out there that didn't apply the the vehicle driven. I kept hearing these catchy phrases like " Track ready full cage" when I saw a half cage with nothing forward of the B pillar. These cars flex a lot when being driven hard and the ACTUAL full cage is needed. "Full on race car", "fully stripped out" and "pretty much everything is modified: I saw stock door panels, a stock headliner, stock dash, stock steel bumpers, and the entire steering column was from a stock car with an aftermarket steering wheel adapter. This is only the stuff that I could see. No mention of diff, trans or even a view of the engine bay??? What kind of car channel is this?
    My overview: Norman you have a sweet street car that will be very fun on a track and back roads. I would love to see more under the hood.
    Poster/host? more actual information and not buzz words that are incorrect. If you don't like criticism, keep doing what your doing.

    That's not a 69, the grill is from a 71 or 72 Pl510, rear brakes are mod. They had shoes on the rear and pwr steering wasn't available in 69 or 70. Cubic inch to horse power Datsun was the only company that did it. 1600cc =96 cid = 96 hp. 10 gal fuel tank at 30 mpg. 4 on the floor and paid $1,100.00. I owned the first custom Flower Power 2 Dr. Introduced to the U.S. in Hawaii. It was photoed and had a full spread with American Mag Wheels and oversized Firestone B13 tires in Playboy mag. A couple of years later I traded it for a 72 PL610 with a defroster and heater it was much more sporty like the Toyota, Celica. VW had met it's competition.

      No the grill is not a 69, the 69 grill was mashed. The brakes are not stock.....they are wilwoods all around. The car IS a 69 built 10/69. I have never seen a stock 510 with power steering.....the car didn't need it, this one does not have it either.

    Didnt Matt Farah review this car?

    • @mattdock7346
      @mattdock7346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different cars. The 510 Matt drove was a flared two door car in Los Angelas. It was running an SR20DET and was fitted in a slightly more modern fashion.

      Mattertron it's the road to Hayward lake and stave lake. It's between mission and maple ridge. He crosses the dam in one shot. It's an extremely fun road but you can't go crazy because there's almost always a cop

    • @RoadsUntraveled
      @RoadsUntraveled  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dan W I've personally never seen cop on the road you're talking about. But then again I never drive that road unless it's a weekday morning or something when it's empty.

    • @Danwall155
      @Danwall155 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roads Untraveled I really only go there on weekends or weekday evenings so that's probably why. There's been a couple times where I've been hauling ass around there and I just get a feeling in my gut to slow down and then after I brake there's a cop around the corner. Never gotten a ticked there so I don't hesitate to drive it fast just not as fast as possible

      An SR wouldn't sound as nice. All you are listening to in the vid is intake sounds.

      The Aussies also like to put 17 and 18 inch wheels on their 510s and do burnouts until they break their half shafts. I wouldn't use them as a model of road performance.

      No they are 50. They have since been replaced with new Yokohama A048's. They are 60 treadwear.

    4 doors belong on dirt, that is what Datsun did.

    Ew why did he leave those bumper pieces on there? Ditch those metal bumper things and add a front lip and it's the cats meow!

    • @mattdock7346
      @mattdock7346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the huge holes in the valence are an eyesore. Does need a spook though. If he ever wants to be able to hit triple digits at a track you need the front to have a lip of some kind or the car will begin to walk on you at those speeds.
