Lara was consistent Mike Tyson of cricket and Sachin the best all-around complete tactical Mohammed Ali. Sachin under the pressure of expectations delivered his best. People turned off their radio/tv in India if he got out. The first question would be Sachin ne Kitna Kiya?

I'm gonna have a controversial take a rare one too. Ponting > Lara. I also think the margin isn't small. Lara had supreme flair that looked heavenly so people were mesmerized & called him the best, he's one of the best imo Sachin > Ponting > Kallis > Lara > Sanga/Dravid (format).

@@patruzemann so! Everyone has their weaknesses. Lara avg in India is 33, for Ponting it's 26. Imo Kallis is a better match winner than Lara, that's why hes above him. Not to mention he's a phenomenal all rounder in both formats. Not an easy thing at all. Btw for Kallis it's 48 in Aus. (I'm going by venue as that gives clear picture. Always do. Coz I don't list Anderson in my all time top 3 despite him being lead wicket taker). While his batting avg may be low in England, his bowling avg is a stellar 29.3. He adapted his game well. And he's a phenomenal team player. He's one of the few who makes in both my fav 11 & best imo 11 all time lists.

Shrav P there were many players who are as great and are more great than abd.virat kohli has also smashed Mitchell starc ,and by the way smashing Mitchell starc is not the worlds greatest challenge as there were more class bowlers more than starc like wasim, waqar,McGrath, walsh, ambrose, warne, donald etc.smashing them is the worlds greatest challenge . so sachin and lara are the worlds class act.

Agree ABD is unique but its debatable whether he is better than 70's 80's or 90's greats because present day bowling is joke compare to lille-thomson or wasim -waqar ,ambrose walsh, warne, murali etc, also viv richards helmetless taking against lillie and thommo no one could match,so ABD is definetly great but not greater than richards or sachin or lara it's debatable.

What a great call by Warne. I didnt ever hear Sir Don talk about Lara but I heard his commentary when Tendulkar first came to Australia and he made a comment after a few over. He said that Tendulkar had the finest technique he had ever seen. I believe it was in Adelaide and he was a guest commentator, I didnt really understand what he had said, but being a cricket tragic that I am I didnt quite forget it. I remember staring at the screen and wondering if Sir Donald's eyesight or mind had gone.... Over the next couple of decades I saw on the scoreboards of the cricket world just what he had meant.... So I will retire from assessing and keep being a cricket tragic... cheers..

Lara was very tentative during start of his inning , his greatness lies in the fact that he had to play with 10 jackasses in his team due to which his record might not be that sparkling. Sachin on the other hand , had commitment of a different level. His understanding of game , pitch , field was unparalleled in the history of cricket. I had the privilege of watching sachin grow up from close quarters so only a genius like warnie will be able to recognize another genius. It was almost impossible to run out sachin as he had so much confidence in his placing and speed at which ball is traveling in the outfield. He was a complete player. It is by no means belittling the genius of lara who was one of the greatest when he was in mood.

Better Captain : Maybe, LARA, although both were average.
More Votes by the Greatest ones (Bradman) & Contemporaries, & chosen by Wisden and Richie Benaud & others in all-time Test XI : SACHIN, although only by a little margin.
One batsman who is a must-pick in MY all-time Test XI : BOTH
Finally, the Best of their Era, & certainly in the Top 5 Greatest Batsmen of all time in Test Cricket. It's tough to decide who was better, but Brian Lara was better in his peak form.

      @rudolphdavid5122 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There was no pressure at all with Sachin. You had others like Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman who equally carried the Indian team.
For West Indies they relied heavily on Lara, he was always under pressure. Most of the runs he made totalled almost half of the team's put together.
That's why Lara is rated way above all the Batsmen, his records of 400 runs no in test and 501 in first class are there to stay, for years to come.

Lara and Tendulkar both are great. No doubt. But some of Lara's knocks won high visibility and most crucial / critical test matches for the West Indies. It was almost a single-handed effort. On the contrary, some of Sachin's great knocks in high visibility and crucial matches, ended up being for a losing cause as India lost those matches. That's why it appears like Lara played more match-winning knocks.
But if you see the statistics and percentage of match-winning (overall) knocks, Sachin's 100 centuries (Test + ODI), have won India about 50% of the matches while Lara's 53 centuries (Test + ODI) might have won WI about 30% of the matches.

Pretty good analysis from someone who would know. Batting is also about how your team is performing. Put Tendulkar or Lara or even Bradman in the west Indies team of the 80's or the Australian team of the 2000's and their records/statistics would be different as they would not have had to bat as long to save their team rather than winning games. Imagine Viv's record if the west indies had to chase or make bigger totals in the second innings or he didn't have such a great batting line up around him. Warne is going on pure one on one experience , you don't get his opinion from reading reams of stats , its much purer and more genuine. Sachin and Lara were 2 of the all time greats , there was very little between them on the field so anyone who says Lara/Tendulkar is way better than the other is pretty ignorant. Off the field , as Warne says , Tendulkar had staggering pressure on him and he performed so consistently. Both were way better than the next batsman

    • @geographyhistorygeopolitic3851

You kids have no idea how good the batting was in 90s.
You had Sachin, Lara, Waugh bros, Jayasuriya and de Silva, The Flowers, Anwer and Inzamam it was so good to watch!

ironically very few batsmen in the 90s had an average more than 50. (just like today). so there is no reason to think that the 90s was any better than now

As an ardent cricket fan, anyday Lara for me in test cricket even he was inconsistent comparing Sachin...His placement is second to none....best player in terms of placement....he bit struggles to score till 100 but the moment he scored ton then we can witness different vintage Lara..gorgeous to watch...how quickly he scores runs...his 277 against Australia came in 1993 when he was young to international cricket...his match winning inning against Austraia in 1999 at Barbados was simply best...the way he played 3 test matches against Srilanka in Srilanka in 2001 with that command is inexplicable...his 226 against Australia at Adelaide in 2005 was also a good inning...If Sachin judge the length very quickly, Lara is so good in place the ball where it should be placed even though it's good length ball...Both are great players but in test Lara anyway for me...In ODI, Sachin is better than Lara... Please don't make reply to my comment becoz this is my humble opinion..

@@cupidvogel Brian Lara. ive met him more than once and have been at his house. He has always been a humble guy. And I think the Aussy feared or despised him more than tendulkar. to many battles with them and i love the 277 he score in australia.

Sachin was pure class... there was art and beauty in his batting and in his humility and sportsmanship. Unfortunately today there is no such artist like sachin. Today's batsmen may get the runs but we don't see that art anymore

This is cricket not your art class and a lot of innovative shots are played today so that can be considered art. Rishabh Pant river scoop against James Anderson and Archer is also an art and Abd has hit a lot of different kind of shots as well.
