    To the question ''Do you think it's worse on the left or on the right?'' I think it's actually a great question if taken to mean ''Do you think there's more of it on the left or on the right?'' Not ''which strand of it might be worse''. In that sense, I find it peculiar that in the U.S. there seems to be much more of it on the democratic left than on the authoritarian right.

    Deborah Lipstadt is such a disgrace! In September 2024 she was asked at the Israeli-American Council annual summit in Washington, D.C., to respond to global perceptions that Israel is weak after Hamas carried out its terrorist attacks in southern Israel on Oct. 7.
    “Do you want a beeper?” Lipstadt asked, drawing applause from the audience. (Footage of the exchange, and critical response to it, has drawn hundreds of thousands of views on social media.). She celebrated Israel’s recent state terrorism in Lebanon that left a number of civilians, including children, dead or injured. Her callous remarks are not only disgusting but also dangerous. At a time when the US government claims it is working to de-escalate tensions between Israel and Lebanon, her flippant celebration of state-sponsored terrorism undermines diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader war in the region. Joking about the loss of innocent lives, especially children, is a disgrace and should have no place in U.S. foreign-policy discussions. It sends a message to the world that the U.S. government condones or even celebrates the slaughter of Arab and Muslim civilians. This is not just immoral; it’s irresponsible.

      @americase7en in the 1920s zionism was a minority view of European Jews and non-existent in non-european Jews.
      In the 1920s, Zionism was a divisive issue among Ashkenazi Jews. While many Ashkenazi Jews supported Zionism, especially after World War I and the Balfour Declaration of 1917, there were significant differences in opinion.
      1. Supporters of Zionism: Many Ashkenazi Jews in Europe, particularly secular Jews, intellectuals, and those associated with socialist movements, saw Zionism as a solution to rising anti-Semitism and the challenges of Jewish assimilation in Europe. They supported the idea of establishing a Jewish homeland in Palestine, viewing it as a path toward Jewish self-determination.
      2. Opposition to Zionism: On the other hand, many Orthodox Jews, particularly ultra-Orthodox groups, rejected Zionism. They believed that the establishment of a Jewish state should not occur until the arrival of the Messiah. In addition, some secular Jews, particularly those assimilated in Western Europe and the United States, felt that Zionism could undermine their efforts to integrate into broader society.
      3. Religious vs. Secular Divide: The secular, socialist variant of Zionism, espoused by figures like David Ben-Gurion and Chaim Weizmann, had more appeal to Ashkenazi Jews in Eastern Europe, where persecution was more severe. Meanwhile, many Western Ashkenazi Jews, particularly in Germany, France, and the U.S., were more hesitant or indifferent to Zionism, prioritizing civic equality in their countries of residence.
      By the 1920s, Zionism had become an influential movement, but it was not universally accepted within the Ashkenazi Jewish community. The response to Zionism varied depending on religious, ideological, and geographic factors.

    Deborah. What's your take on the Gaza genocide and the book of joshua a popular book in israeli schools.
    One of the most notable verses is in Joshua 6:21 (ESV):
    > "Then they devoted all in the city to destruction, both men and women, young and old, oxen, sheep, and donkeys, with the edge of the sword."

    • @robertcarter8868
      @robertcarter8868 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The book of joshua is an excellent book. Not for the reasons you would think. Forgetting the conquest, it is a book that addresses morals and interpretations as well as relations with other peoples. It is also a book about making peace with others through negotiation. The battle of jericho actually has strong moral messages towards treating others in a humane and respectful manner within it. I was shocked how amazing it is as a text when i recently read it. Sadly, people don't read the actual text. It is rich for debate.

    • @everythingandmore5537
      @everythingandmore5537 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @robertcarter8868 The Book of Joshua is primarily focused on the Israelites' conquest of Canaan, with its themes often revolving around war, divine commands to take the land, and the establishment of Israel in the Promised Land. The text does not have a significant emphasis on peace in the way that later biblical prophets, such as Isaiah, speak of peace and justice.
      However, there are moments in the Book of Joshua where peace is mentioned or implied in certain contexts, though they are not the central focus of the narrative:
      1. Peace Treaties: One notable example is the Gibeonites, who deceived the Israelites into making a peace treaty with them (Joshua 9). While the treaty is made under false pretenses, it is still an example of a moment where a peaceful resolution is sought instead of war. Joshua honors the treaty despite the deception, showing that agreements of peace could be upheld, even under difficult circumstances.
      2. Rest after Conquest: At the end of the book, once the Israelites have taken much of the land of Canaan, it is said that the land had rest from war (Joshua 11:23). This rest can be seen as a kind of peace, although it follows the violent conquests that preceded it.
      3. Encouragement of Obedience and Harmony: Joshua repeatedly urges the people to follow the Law of Moses, which includes commands for justice, mercy, and community well-being. While this is not a direct message of peace, the idea of living according to God's laws is intended to lead to harmony within the Israelite community.
      In contrast to these few moments, much of the book focuses on military campaigns and God's commands to destroy or displace the Canaanite inhabitants, which makes the book a challenging one for deriving traditional messages of peace. Later biblical texts and rabbinic interpretations often engage with the themes of Joshua to explore deeper ethical questions about war, peace, and justice.
