Heck yeah, I watched Rambo III in 4K the other day and it’s breathtaking amazing, and Death Wish 74 on 4K you can almost taste that era and feel the cold.
I think we need to take into account not just resolution, we have to account for HDR and the wider color gamut, every movie benefits from that wider color gamut and better contrast, resolution is only a fraction of what makes the 4K Ultra HD format great
If the movie was shot on at least 35mm, and there's enough resolution to justify it, yes! Genre has nothing to do with what should be on 4K, it really comes down to the information on the film justifying a 4K release. The real benefit of 4K isn't a bright shiny color explosion, it's the ability to capture the look and presentation of film on your TV.
Worth noting that it isn't just about picture quality, but audio quality as well. Often, it's only the 4K version that's released with an Atmos track (when available); of course, that's only an improvement if you have the audio equipment to take advantage of it--but for those of us who do, an action flick with a great Atmos mix can be a highly entertaining experience. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, I don't think it has anything to do with genre--action faces the same "is it worth it" questions as the other genres.
i think its whatever floats your boat im a dvd blu ray man myself so really not to bothered about whats on 4k but im happy for the people that like and collect 4ks and if thats action films then so be it im sure some would look fantastic on 4k to each there own : )
@, I’ve heard that Terminator 2 looks much better on standard Blu-ray compared to 4K. I think the same is true of the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, too. Not sure what else. Newer moves form the last 10 years or so don’t usually have as much an improvement from Blu-ray to 4K, generally speaking.
@aaronclick6388 thanks! Yeah I have that Pirates haha, i wish studios would release two versions, clean transfer, and then digital and AI up whatever they want on the transfer I won't watch
If there are a lot of action scenes with explosions and fire...hell yes. Any movie with outside shots or very dark scenes usually look great in 4K because of added detail. Dramas and movies with a lot of regular indoor shots, do not really need to be upgraded for $25+ unless you don't just have it at all. The Great Outdoors would look great in 4K because of the outdoor and wilderness scenes.
Good discussion CHH. I have to agree that 4K does not always mean it’s better. A couple of my favourites are Cliffhanger and Rambo first blood on 4k, Unbelievable detail
The problem with *_Expendables_* on 4K is that 1: The first two films were shot on film but done at 2K, so it's just an upscale job. 2: The VFX is rather obvious, even on Blu-Ray, a Millennium Films issue. 3: Parts 1 & 3 had unrated directors cuts, which are missing on 4K.
They definitely do. Honestly can’t believe this is a question. I can see why people say this about comedies. Not that they don’t but most aren’t filmed to be stunners. So many action movies have such great outdoor settings and various types of 35mm film.
Disney MCU films for the most part look like upscaled blu-rays. Also, Jurassic Park 4K looks like an upscaled blu-ray. Lost World and JP3 look much better.
For the most part I’d say era over genre. Today’s films are shot with the crème de la crème of technology and with the thought of 4K in mind right off the bat. Earlier movies we’ve had to see for decades on less than flattering formats. The 4K does make a difference regardless of genre-in some cases more significantly than others. In some cases it can be like seeing the movie again for the first time. While I do agree about horror being the most visual of genres, I’d argue that right on par if not more would be Westerns. I have seen many Westerns that have benefited massively from 4K.
Absolutely especially if they are shot on film. Cases against at least the necessity of a purchase on some releases are if the master is 2K and up-rezzed to 4K (still a larger bit rate and possibly hdr- if it comes from the source and not artificially applied- are a help). Also many digitally shot movies just don't get too much of a benefit from the format. Some movies look amazing like say Gretel and Hansel (not action but applicable), some are barely discernable from the 1080p blu-ray. The heyday of action films was the late 60's to early 2000's anyway so they're most likely to be shot on film.
Pretty much all films made today even the ones shot on film (this includes Tarantino’s films, like Django, H8teful, and OUATIH) are edited digitally then a film print is made from that edit
I never wanted to upgrade my DVDs to Blu Ray then on to 4k. I've already spent way too much money on what I have now and I don't want to do it all over again in order to upgrade everything. That being said, I could see upgrading a few titles. Some of those cinematic Wuxia movies, like Come Drink with Me, or much more recently, Legend of the Black Scorpion or House of Flying Daggers would be great in 4k. The Raid 2 would also be a great upgrade to 4k; there's so many amazing scenes (like the muddy prison fight, the bar fight that ends in the bloody death on the snow, that car chase that ends in some sort of broken down, apocalyptic section of the city) that it deserves to be seen in hi def. Also, is Warrior's Way on 4k? It needs to be. Furthermore, some of the old Japanese bushido movies could benefit from 4k (Lone Wolf and Cub, for example).
Action films definitely need to remain in 4K. Even if there are a few exceptions that don't quite meet the mark, I can't envision watching movies like Godzilla or Jaws in Blu-ray quality. While Blus may offer Dolby Atmos sound, the picture quality is exceptional when studios put in the effort. It's crucial that they avoid being lazy and utilize the appropriate GB disc for the best experience.
Actions movies are better on 4k due to the budget and also the panoramic scenes on must of them and horror movies usually focus on specifics locations mainly houses, mansions, cemeteries and others locations.

Every genre is better on 4K...no brainer!
Why are people even talking about this every genre should be on 4k
Absolutely they do. Fire & Explosions look epic in 4K
Action movies definitely belong on 4K, much more than any Comedy.

One of the main benefits of Action movies being on 4k is the improved audio quality with DTS:X and Dolby Atmos.
Hot Fuzz definitely has a high spot in UHD in my collection.
There are definitely a lot of variables at play when determining how good a movie looks on 4K and whether it’s really improved on 4K.
Just curious, what are a few movies that look best on Blu Ray? So I can buy

I think the Expendables look worse in 4K because the CGI is worse and worse as the franchise went along. 4K makes the movies look even more fake.
Yes. Cheap Lionsgate CGI just like Punisher Warzone and Last Blood.

Haven’t watched my Drag Me to Hell 4K yet, anyone know how it looks? 😱

Look at me, I'm rich. I buy 4K's.😂
No they are a waste of money on 4K better on bluray and cheaper
Cheaper yes, better no
@ about the same I’d say
Obviously
