Do you like the direction of Part 6?

  • @Diabl0Mask
    @Diabl0Mask 2 ปีที่แล้ว +149

I actually love the direction they went with in Part 6, it's like a slice-of-life that always has this tension in the background, it's more effective now because of how relatable it is, you don't see many stories where the tension is built through the character oversleeping because he got tired from a long trip, people may find the slow pacing annoying, but the series is slow because of its attention to details and realistic plot which is always a plus in my book. Also it's great seeing how smart Kaiji has become and how deeply calculating he is in the simplest things, like buying a house and furniture.

part 6 is a nice change of pace and still has some of the high tension elements that I love. The stuck in shopping mall arc was unique because we got to see Kaiji communicate his strats to mario over the phone, whilst also trying to keep him composed. It has given us more insight on Kaijis leadership skills (in contrast to Endoh's lack of leadership) which is not something we always get to see.

One thing I've learnt is that a bunch of people that read fkmt works basically speed read scan pages for highlight bits. It's tragic when he's the undoubted pacing king to find out some of his fans are rather shallow in what they appreciate haha. Part 6 is FKMT in his absolute prime. Masterpiece, genuinely. His writing has never been this tight and no-nonsense. And I know that may sound odd for the part with so many gags. But there are no wasted gags. Everything is leveraged as stakes against our main characters (trio and endou). People don't know what they're reading.

Something that was interesting in Part 6 is the characters like Dolly and The Allies Kaiji is making along the way. It really shows a massive change in Kaiji as he able to better Read and understand people. I bring Dolly cause his behavior is similar to Ohtisuki. Really comes down to Ohtsuki always trying to frame his actions as a good thing when he was a disgusting snake. But Dolly never bothered with that pretext. Dolly's honesty told Kaiji he could be trusted. Even debate with Granny now Kaiji is going to clean up the misunderstanding instead of letting it fester and build up like Meada and Miyoshi let Kaiji save a friendship. Kaiji learns how to better interact with society.

Kaiji has never been happier with his two best friends. You would have never seen Kaiji build a money bed in previous arcs. part 6 has been great for light heartedness. Now though, it looks like things are picking up again.
My prediction is that Endou will be unable to catch Kaiji and co and as a result, hyuodo will personally invite will invite Kaiji for a final gamble, one that if he wins will make him rich and ultimately set him free of the burden of constantly being on the run. He obviously takes him up on his offer (because he’s learned nothing despite being hung upside down in a death machine suspended two stories above ground. Of course, that’s why we love him 💀)

I wasn't bored once reading part 6. Finally we got to know more about kaiji as a everyday person through his mother or just the way he is dealing with people. It gave him even more relatable points (thing I didn't know was possible) and the goofy scenes helped emphasize the more common beauty of human nature found in comfy everyday life. Kurosawa was very good at this too.
The gambling aspect didn't really disappear also. Think of the part when Chang was stuck in the countryside, when Kaiji had to siege at his mom's or when they had to push the truck behind a wall to hide it from a pursuer. They were all tense as fuck situations. All of the escape arc has been a literal gamble in a sense. There are other gambling/mind game manga like Usogui or Alice in borderland if you seek nonstop thrilling survival mindgame kino

I personally love part 6. Part 4-5 are for sure my favorite parts in terms of tension and the grander themes they discuss (particularly between Kaiji and Kazuya) and could be considered peak. But after a peak there has to be de-escalation, and that is exactly the function of part 6. Beyond being a fun read in that you get to see Kaiji, Mario and Chang just deal with more realistic and silly issues, its a well deserved breather for Kaiji who has been duking it out for so long.
The recent chapters (speaking as of 442) have been implying a somewhat escalation in the involvement of Hyoudou (and there were 2 panels of Kazuya within a flashback T__T) so I'm definitely excited for that, but all the same I like the inherently more relaxed nature of how it's been.
(Somewhat off topic PS) I also think FKMT's slice of life stuff works well in its own right. I've been reading the Ichijou spinoff (albeit that's only a collaboration with FKMT) and the inherently ridiculously intense Ichijou next to normal everyday things is just funny. Honestly, I'll probably go more into FKMT now that I'm caught up on Kaiji :)

Even though I haven't read the sixth part, I enjoyed hearing your assessment of it, and I'm really looking forward to checking it out. The editing and scripting of this video is especially hilarious (he love da gamba; you know he doesn't mind some 50 dollar smackdowns on Big Red every now and then). That said, even from what I've gone through so far of Kaiji, I'm still relieved to hear Kaiji is getting a small break, and if anything, I'm almost afraid it's setting him up for an even more devastating fall in part 7, as is the ride with gambling.
That said, again, this video is wonderfully edited, and it's hard to pick out a favorite segment. Fukumoto's sniped marriage with the 3 bamboo tile, Kazuya takin a lil' slip, the bros enjoying That Van Life... We may not be getting a Kaiji S3 anytime soon, but I'm happy to take the antics of this ^^

Ah Kaiji Part 6 my beloved...
I read the Part 6 in a very remote Diyarbakır village home of my grandparents.
Firstly I knew there were no gambles in Part 6 so I was prepared for what's to come for Kaiji.
At the village, the internet was extremely slow and there was only one point where it was connected in the mud-home. I had to stand up on the couch and raise my hand above into the sky, being wary since the phone could fall below to the sheep pen.
It took me half the time I stayed there (about 2 and a half weeks) to finish Part 6 (till chapter 461) and honestly I ENJOYED EVERY SINGLE PAGE I READ- maybe because there was nothing else to do except fighting with my cousins whom on average, were like 10 years younger than me (I did, indeed, fought them in the latter 2 and a half weeks 💀) but honestly, those reading times were some of the best parts of this year for me.
I especially loved the mini-arc where Kaiji stayed at his mother's home. The parts where Mario was trying to escape from the mall and Chang trying to find the abandoned house too. Those were a mix of comedy done well integrated into thriller due to the stakes they had. Kaiji Part 6 done it so well as you said.
Oh and I LOOOVED the interactions of the Asian Trio (not the old one 😊) with other characters like Mone, Dolly and the camper-neighbour guys (btw 07:06 that zoo📁 thing, I think it was the opposite, right? The neighbours suspected Kaiji to be 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 with them animals 💀)
Damn there are so many things to talk about Part 6! Sure, I realized I had missed the gambling scenarios but I'm not complaining. We got less-materialized gamble-like situations along the way, actually the whole arc was like a huge gamble tbh.
This part shows why character driven stories are more successful than the plot driven ones, for I don't read slice of life-comedy type of stories but I did for Kaiji. I enjoyed it but I know I won't do it for any other story.
And hear me out on this- I just hope the trio at some point loses this money some way but gain or are offered the same if not even more from Teiai. For... if the gang manages to keep em all, I'm not sure if people would relate to the message it would give... Gambling can save you!?
I realized halfway through that the gang was spending lots of money in means of saving/protecting it. Maybe in that journey to protect that money, they would end up having spent the most of it (is that even possible lol) and can understand money earned through gambling is not OK at all- of course that's what my heart desires and I know it doesn't go well with Kaiji at all. I just think it would be neat.
(And I know Kaiji deserved to get that money %100 (I was literally SCREAMING for Kaiji to win against Kazuya 😭) but man... Idk... It just doesn't sit right me if the series ends with the trio going their way through the money they won from the gambling... The conclusion it implies... Naaaahh 😞)
(And yeah Kaiji also won money through gambling many times but each time that money was either lost again or the majority of it was spent for non-personal desire/pleasure issues)
So overall I like this part.
    For me:
    Part1 > Part5 > Part2 > Part6 > Part4 > Part3

it's definitely my favorite arc, flaws included. i think this change of pace was inevitable and that it came at a good time in the story; after all the heat and intensity of the previous parts, it was extremely satisfying to see kaiji succeeding and trusting and loving and being loved. fucking awesome. my biggest gripe is so far is just how BADLY I MISS KAZUYA !!! i think best case scenario is that kazuya defends kaiji's intentions of saving him out of selflessness, either because he knows kaiji would be "stupid" enough to do such a thing or because being saved was enough to convince him that he Can be loved without motive. Then he tries to call off the manhunt because 1) i did all this myself, DAD, and 2) i LOST, OK??
middle scenario is he just goes along with everything with a kind of pathetic blobfish face, absolute WORST case is he is completely exhausted and wordless and remembers nothing anyway due to head trauma

I like part 6 a lot. I think one of the major criticisms of Kaiji was that all his wins felt pointless, because he was always destined to make a really dumb decision that snatched it all away from him and reset him back to zero again, when a wiser person would be capable of knowing when to stop and start enjoying the money rather than frittering it away gambling.
The camper van/homeowner adventures feel like a new direction. Finally, he doesn't have another game to distract him from what he must do - to squirrel away as much money as possible, keeping it safe from both Teiai and himself. He has so much money that he can't realistically spend it all, and some of it is now legitimately protected by banks in the form of the passbooks. There's always a feeling of tension in the background, and as soon as the trio start to let their guard down, they are reminded that they are fugitives who can't be carefree. I want to see more of this, but also the clever gambling games are what really draw people in.
I don't think Kaiji has had enough gambling yet, but I also like that he's not continuously doubling down on every bet he makes. It seems like he as finally realized that 2.4 billion yen is enough.

He will go back to gambling, I’m beyond hyped and I hope kaiji finally gets his sweet revenge, maybe fukumoto will do these side gambling arcs and the final 10 volumes will be against hyodo either way I’m excited as hell.

For the most part I love part 6, it’s very different compared to the other parts, but I think it’s built up to that, my only real complaint is the snail pace as you said, at times it felt like it’s stalling for the next big thing, the part right after Mario almost got caught is pretty snoozer, though I appreciate the more human moments, and in particular how it characterises the people from teiai, I just have no idea how long it’s gonna last and when it’s gonna end. When they first started it I was super surprised, now it feels more like the norm for nothing to happen

The parts I liked were the Kaijis mom stuff, Mario and the store and everything hyodo and endo related. Which might seem like a lot of stuff but there are so much stuff I simply loathed . Biggest example is those two bums that wasted God knows how many chapters and now the grandma stuff the car chase etc .

@@Swuh yeah and honestly I did not like that. I don’t mind comedy but when half the manga becomes gag it becomes boring and annoying to read through. It’s the longest Kaiji part for literally 0 good reasons. If the author actually wrote without relying on useless gags we’d probably already be on the final part. Idk I’m sad one of my favorite mangas has been reduced to such an inconsistent mess.

We could’ve had more time for developing the characters more maybe ? Or introducing more antagonists other than endo and hyodo to increase tension and yk use the length of the part for smth useful yk ? But no it’s all useless with some good parts here and there. Now the manga is on hiatus for idk how long and not much of the story seems purposeful.

Part 6 feels so fresh, even compared to stuff like Kurosawa. 80% of Fukumoto's work is dudes playing Mahjong, honestly Akagi was kinda hard to read during the 20 year Mahjong battle because it goes on for so long. The gambling is great, but Kaiji is about the character himself, and part 6 is still true to who he is.

I love part 6 because of the adorable domestic vibes I get from the van gang, especially when they all first move into the house together (and *especially* between Kaiji and Chang. Those two are definitely cuddling when Mario isn't looking).
Also, the comedic tone is just so refreshing after incredibly tense death games of parts 4 and 5. I loved them both of course, but it's non stop mind games and stress, for hundreds of chapters on end, that just getting the chance to settle down and enjoy some semblance of "peace" feels great.
I did however find myself taking longer and longer breaks in between reading sessions in part 6, which I hadn't done with any of the previous arcs (I devoured 90% of the manga over the course of like 1 month, but it took me about triple that amount to fully catch up with part 6). I guess in my head, I'm basically just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I especially want to know what Kazuya will do about this whole mess (if he ever comes back). I can't imagine an ending to Kaiji where he just gets away scot-free--I believe that FKMT-sama will deliver and give us a satisfying final showdown with Teiai before this is over!

Part 6 is... Not bad. I like it less than the rest of Kaiji, but I don't really dislike it either. The tense moments are built up similarly as in the rest of Fukumoto's work, but the tension falls a bit flat for me when the risk causing the tension is "Teiai will find out we are in this town, and they will be able to pursue us more intensively!", whereas in earlier parts the tension was built around literal gambles on life and death.
That said, I quite enjoy the more comedic elements, like the van gang's antics, Endou's misadventures, and the snarky narrator pointing out that Kaiji's mistreating his mother. I will be happy is this is the calm before the storm, like you suggest.

Kaiji Part 6 is amazing. Given the choice between playing it safe and doing more of the same or to progress the narrative of the protagonist, he took the gamble and changed it up. It's a little slow(especially now that I've caught up and have to rely on scanlators for new chapters), but there's still gambling, just not the kind where each participant necessarily understands all the rules. Having Kaiji break away from the underground gambling scene and explore Japan and meet people with Mario and Chang lends credibility to the world.
