I'm driven myself slightly nuts at times fretting over self-noise. It's mostly unnoticed after putting energy back into good performance instead.

Thank you for fielding my question. The Neumann is pricey but does spec at 13 dB-A. I'm liking the Shure KSM 137 selling today on Amazon for $279 and self noise of 14 dB. There is a video comparing the two on acoustic guitar and the Shure is both clear and lively.

Hello! Thanks for your great content! Got a question: SM58 or E835? I know mic selection depend on personal preferences, voices and other external factors, but what is your favourite? Which one is warmer and better at sound rejection?
And lastly, why no one made a comparison video for those 2 famous mic?!

      @samnicholson5051 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The e835 has less proximity effect so does allow a closer working distance. It's sounds a little smoother too.

Sony C800G self noise is 18DBa and its considered to be the best voice recording microphone of all times. It also costs >9000$. So self noise under 20DBa shouldn't really be an issue for voice/music recording.

Hope to hear this one in a future video… in your Do You Need a Shock Mount the audio quality was definitely up close and personal with a terrific presence of voice without being “down your throat” close. The obvious question (“what gear did you use?”) is not what I’d really like to learn. I’d like to know what you do to achieve that kind of rich sound, whether working with a Behringer XM8500 and a Focusrite Scarlett -or- a Rode PodMic and a MOTU Mk2 -or- an RE320 and a Grace m101? Granted, each of these gear tiers offers a given level of performance, BUT what it is about your process (placement, recording, gain, eq, compression, other post work) that helps you get closer to the sound quality goal you hope to achieve?
It’s more than just the gear. How do you eq a voice to accent certain qualities, or reduce others?
P.S. liked and subbed. Now reviewing back to listen and like as I go!

While the KM 184 could be considered the Cadillac of Cardioid SDC mics, the Sennheiser MKH 40/50's & MHK 8040/8050/8090, or Schoeps MK 4/MK 41/MK 21/MK 22 are a class above (like a top of the line Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, Porsche, or Ferrari) along with the price tag to match.

Lol...exactly the reason I went with Cadillac.

I just recently upgraded my mic and I was going for ease of convenience since I don't want spend hours on my mixes fixings things that could be avoidable, so low self noise was on that list and so many other things 😅

What a timely video, was actually looking to get a pair of the sE8s, but after a bit more research, I pulled the trigger on a pair of Lauten LA120s, as they seem very similar to the sE8s, and for just $30 more, they come with Omni capsules too which would be great for miking an upright from further away. Would you be willing to do an sdc shootout? I'd love to see how the other mics in the 300-500$ price range stack up against each other, and their respective pros and cons.

Here are some questions for ya:
What is and when do you use a studio pair of microphone?
Tips for minimising handheld microphone noise?
Best way(s) to hook up a lav mic?
How good is a cupboard or closet of clothes for recording?
What household objects make good acoustic noise absorbing alternatives to bought panels?
What basic gear order would you recommend for certain price points say $100, $200,.$500?
What actually makes a classic microphone and on average are more recently micrphones (or refreshed electronics) microphones better?
Tips when purchasing second hand microphones / gear?
How important is editing your content before publishing? I see lots of places say just record.your podcast uploaded it and you'll be famous in no time?
Tips to avoid/ reduce mouth clickness and dryness?
    Worst microphone practices?
Good budget DAW options / or what to look for in a DAW. Should you be looking at one with lots of features.or something simple. What are must have features for podcasting?
What the hell are LUFS and why should I care?
Compression and then EQ or the other way around?
Where to get basic podcasting training? (Hint Hindenburg runs lots of sessions)
DAW options for someone that wants to make audio books?
What site rate and bit depth should I record in? What should I publish in?
If most content is consumed on phones, tablets and crappy of bass boosted ear buds should I really be bothering with audio quality / perfection?
Are you ready for the other andrewc to ask questions?

      A few.more.for you.
Should why I wear monitoring headphones?
What type of headphones should I get for audio production?
Are desk monitors the bees knees.for audio production?
Desk monitors vs headphones for audio production? What when.and why?
Open back vs closed back headphones? What, when and Why?
What is impedance what does it means for microphones, headphones, and interface? Can probably make 4 videos out of this one separate then bring all together.
Scripts vs winging it? When and why?
How.many people is too.many or high challenge for audio production? Or will your listener likely.loose track of the story first?
How good are dedicated audio production keyboards for DAWS (custom.layouts)?
Do mice with extra buttons on them help with audio editing and production?
How to EQ your voice. Should.someone else do it?
Is it worth having a reference EQ of your voice made in a studio and then have software match your recordings.to that sample (Hindenburg does this - pro version).
What automations do you use to speed.up.your productions / what techniques so you use or are you a fan or minimalist and focus on getting the best recording.in the first place.

I was wondering if my rode podmic could be used for doing professional voice acting ?

Podmic isn't that good to do any professional job IMHO.

Did you really mean to indicate that poor people who want to 'come.out of the closet" can't be voice over professionals?
Just kidding i know what you meant.with regards to reverb absorption on the cheap.
