  • The Fairphone 3 is a modular smartphone that suposidly is super easy to repair, and replace parts of. But is the Fairphone 3 durable? The only way to find out is with a JerryRigEverything Durability Test. This time, we'll start off by exploring the FairPhone 3's insides, since that is what it is desigend for. Then we will see what the phone is made of and if the FairPhone 3 can survive every day life.

    As an electronic technician specialised in repairing smaller electronics specifically: This, this is what we need in the world not more glue and more components you can barely take apart without breaking shit left right and center even if you do know what you are doing.
    This is how shit should be done these days, we are already drowning in electric waste that is too expensive to repair.

      The sheer amount of electric waste and how hard stuff is to repair is intentional, though, corporations make more money if they can force people to throw their old thing and buy a new one, planned obselescense, or however that second word is spelled. Can we as a species afford to keep doing this? Nope it's literally killing the planet. Is it ethical? Gods fucking no. But until we can deal with the root cause of the problem, the greed of businessowners and the systems which enable them to act on it, we can't do much about it.

      They used to have quite a bit of performance issues so I am not sure marketing would help since people would be disappointed. Back at Fairphone 2 it was only really an enthusiast phone. Much like foldable phones you pay a high price both in durability and performance per dollar. So it is very much an enthusiast phone, but in the sustainable, responsible enthusiast rather than the tech enthusiast. I hope the Fairphone 3+ will solve these issues as I do like what they are trying to do.

      Except for newer iPhones... all phones are repairable. Even by yourself, if you want to take the risk. This is just a stupid step. You repair your phone once every 2 years, at the most. And paying £500 for £200 worth of extremely old hardware just to fix it yourself is just stupid too. But, each to their own. Not my money.

    • @youquagmire
      @youquagmire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@wheezel55 See the thing is, repairing your own phone is something completely outside of the comfort zone to most. Also, I know allot of people that need their phone repaired more times then the usual 2 year timeline due to accidental damage. Be it to the screen or a button to a charging port. If these things are as easy as they are to fix on the Fairphone, more users would be able to keep a longer phone lifespan. Specs, on the other hand, could be better. But to most users that look for longevity don't chase flagship specs. They just want a reliable, easy to use, easy to repair phone.

    • @jellevm
      @jellevm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@wheezel55 The Fairphone isn't just about repairability though, it's also more ethical and environmentally friendly. For example, they pay their factory workers in China 4x as much as other manufacturers. They set up a whole program, which other manufacturers like Tesla joined afterwards, for ensuring ethical cobalt sourcing which wouldn't involve child labour.
      Basically, they do a lot more with that extra money than just make a repairable phone.

Well, there was a time, when phones used Plastic Covers, that revealed a removeable Battery and were opened by a few Screws, making replacing something relatively painless. Not on the same level as this thing, wich is designed to be maintained, but still pretty quick and painless. Fixing my Galaxy S4, my first Smartphone was no big deal at all, super easy. Those days are gone unfortunately, now everything has a Glass Backpannel, that is utterly useless and glued in place, so no getting into it without a Heatgun and tools .

      @@propersod2390 There are other ways to implement water resistance. Take a look at the Galaxy S5, wich suprise suprise, was easy to open and fix, had a removeable Battery and yet it was fucking waterproof, mr Clownsmiley.
      Plus, it often takes WAY longer then 5 fucking MInutes to open one of those newer phones, at least if you don't want to break anything, wich happens easily with fucking glass. And it doesn't stop there, Mr Clownsmiley. Many Components are mounted in a way, that replacing them is a ROYAL pain in the fucking arse. Wich is why not anyone can or wants to repair a phone or don't get it fixed - because when it requires quite soome time + cost of the replacement parts make it quite expansive.
      Also, BEFORE every device was waterproof, water damage defenetly happend sometime, but honestly, that doesn't happen THAT often. I mean I'm kinda careless with that thing, because it ain't a fucking fashion statement, I use it daily at work and it just gotta fucking work. I drop that damn thing constantly (Pro Tipp: Cases (who completely defeat the purpose of fancy glass plates ) and glass screen protectors ). But never have I came to a situation, were I actually needed it to be water proof. Except that one time with my non water proof Galaxy S4 were I fell completely drunken into a small river at a festival. It worked completely fine after that tough.

    I own a fairphone 3 and I have to say: don't buy it if you need it to work absolutely 100% of the time. Because they are a small company their support is quite cumbersome and answers with a delay of about 2 weeks, but they want to help if you give them time (there is a forum too for help). I find it helpful when someone close to you also has a fairphone, in case you think a module is not working, so you can swap and test it.
    Besides that I am really glad I bought this phone, with a gcam port for images and open camera for videos this phone is definitely a good fit for me :')

      But once I get the new iPhone, I find out the USB cable it came with is not compatible with my adapter, because all the old adapters (including the one I had with the iPhone XS Max) were USB A, when the new cable they supplied was USB C. Thumbs up to Fairphone for implementing the concept and Jerry for his super cool videos. Could be awesome if consumers can choose some components of the phone based on their usage. For example the company can provide 2 or 3 options on the components say a battery of 3500 mah or 4500 mah, screen size of 5 inch or 6 inch etc...

      What do you mean "better software support"? Fairphone is still working on the next Android upgrade for the Fairphone 2, which has already received a few. And that phone is 6 years old by now. The Fairphone 3+ will receive the same amount of upgrades, so software support is excellent and I don't see how it could be better.

      @@OneKnifeYeHand The Fairphone 2 did not have any update since December 2019, so if they still work on it, not releasing security updates for over a year is crazy. Like what are you supposed to do, get a new phone for a year, then come back?

      @@harshdhamu9915 you can't compare it to an iphone. It has wayyy lesser specs. 400 euros is 35,000 INR.
      You want to pay Rs35,000 for an outdated phone? One that can't even compete with a Rs10,000 MI/Realme phone.
      As for the screen replacement, its 100 Euros. That's approximately 8500 INR.
      Even Samsung charges way less for a full AMOLED panel replacement.
      Hell, you can even get a 144Hz 24inch IPS gaming monitor at that price.
