Hi nick, actually, if you want culinary delights in a more modern location, that's not the place, you should try Pango and Batoh (new road) areas. There are more cafees, food court, young people usually gather there. Pasar Aceh and Peunayong are known as the 'oldest areas' in Banda Aceh.

It was the only western coffee shop and also served as a restaurant in Banda Aceh, this coffee shop opened just right after the tsunami hit Aceh in 2004, the coffee shop soon became the meeting point for most of the foreigners who works there as well as volunteers of some NGO in Aceh at that time due to the Aceh reconstruction & rehabilitation, some prominent world leaders had made meeting at Caswell such as the German Chancellor and the Australian prime minister and their staffs once had work meeting at the coffee shop at the same time, one group downstair and the other group was up stairs. unfortunately I found out the coffee shop had closed down permanenty, If the coffee shop still had opened you could have visited it for some historical reasons. USA had sent 'Abraham Lincoln' aircraft carrier and had transported injuries and badly injured to the ship, it's been such a great help for Indonesia people during those terrible time, any way hope you'll have a great adventure while you're in Banda Aceh.
