story from an engineer that built a semi-conductor factory in the late 70's they had a problem and suspected a leak, a guy came and "sniffed" the pipes until he found where the leak was...a few days later he lost all his hair and eyebrows, I'm happy we have sensors and detectors everywhere now lol and happy he didn't die because there's a lot of bad chemicals involved in this industry

Actually old people do have a scent, being incontinent is one reason. There are others , different in men and women. Never heard the cucumber version before. It requires more frequent cleansing to freshen up.

as a former paramedic I can confirm that all nursing homes share a distinct odor. Though I always assumed its due to some commonly used chemical or medicine 😮
They stink. Often you have the smell of bleach and then get to carpeted areas and you smell piss. Used to deliver adult diapers amongst other deliveries.
I had a perforated colon last October and spent a week in the hospital, on the third day I began to smell an odor all it reminded me of is old people. It took two months for my body to reset and get rid of that smell it’s a bit disturbing being 45 and having that smell.

Try diluting it. When we smell in aromatherapy or wine tasting, we know there are different levels to smell that have to do with the dilution and range of distance from the concentrate.

"Do old people smell like cucumbers?" I used to work at a nursing home and, honestly.. a little bit, yeah. There's more to it but cucumber is definitely a note in there. It's a little like opening a pack of baby wipes and taking a huge sniff, but also you're in a sawmill and there may or may not be a dog running around. Once you get a nose for the scent, it's unmistakable. I remember being in a laundromat with my mom (who also worked in nursing homes) once and a little tiny old lady walked in and both of us knew instantly. I was like "Why does it smell like old people" and then the old lady came around the machines and we were like "oh no oh god I hope she didn't hear that"

My father is 88. He showers everyday, uses Old Spice aftershave, brushes his teeth and applies deodorant too. He's always dressed when he's puttering in the garden. He never looks disheveled. If old people smell a little stale, they may be dealing with dementia or depression or they feel like they don't have a reason to bathe or change their clothes. I know several people who gave up on hygiene in their 40s.☹
Also could be diabetes or gut issues. My dad isn't that old but his breath almost smells like methane gas i dont even know how to describe it... its like slightly sweet, fermented sort of disinfectant smell. I haven't confronted it to him yet but it seems like a health issue tbh.

As someone who works at a senior living home, I can confirm you don't really smell the typical "old people" when you're near them or when you walk in the building (depends on the amount care put into the building, like cleaning). Most of the residents actually bathed and sometimes wear perfume or cologne for events. I'll say it depends on the type of elderly person that can take care of themselves or cant due to disabilities or disorder. The residents are very sweet and wise at my job, which I'm thankful for. 🥰
Not to be argumentative, but I can confirm that my 77yo mother started getting the very distinctive old ppl smell 1-2 yrs ago. Old ppl DO have distinctive odor. That's why it has its own, distinctive name, differenting it from regular b.o. I've bn told old ppl think they dont need to shower as often bc they don't get the regular b.o. stench anymore & cant smell themselves. I'm wondering if maybe since you work in a sr care facility you might be more jaded to the odor than most ppl. Kinda like when ppl don't realize their home, car, & often they, themselves smell like their pet(s). Or like how, as a child in the 70's, I had no idea I went around wreaking like an ashtray bc my mother smoked indoors. I didn't smoke of course, but I was exposed to it alot. Even when I returned home from weeks at gma & gpa's house (they NEVER smoked) I still didn't notice it in my own home. It takes a long time to reset our sense of smell.

I also work at a senior living home with oldest People mostly on wheelchairs who have dementia. Their odour is TERRIBLE. Nurses take good care of them but like babies smell good, oldest smell bad. FIRST thing I do when I come from work: good shower...and still after 6 months of working here I still smell on myself that terrible smell. I cannot stand it specially when I am out of the the senior living home. Sometimes it makes me vomit, I cannot eat most od things and I am searching for OTHER job. I like my Job but....I Just can't stand that smell. I think it is BECAUSE of old and SAD memories: my grandmother die when I was a Little child. When she was alive I never smelled her but when she died they left her for almost 2 days in the dinning room where we could say goodbye to her (it was in the end of 80s). And that time I smelled something like SOUR, a Little SWEET and BITTERLY TERRIBLE SMELL. And that is how it smells when you're around 2 or more older people. A cucumber? Well I wish they would smell like that

I agree with you. My mother is 94 years old and doesn’t smell at all. At her age she is a very clean person and he bed sheets don’t smell at all. I believe when some elderly smell it is because edit is a condition with them, like some kind of illness or the person can take baths for themselves or simply weren’t very clean all their lives. It is sad that they are investigating this kind of issues with the elderly, like we never will get older in the future. 😔

That's a general rule so that kids don't accidentally kill themselves but if you're certain that the chemical isn't dangerous if inhaled it's completely fine to just smell it normally.

I grew up with grandparents that made it to their 80s-90s. They do have a smell it makes me happy because my grandparents gave me lots of love so it reminds me of home from my childhood. Very Nostalgic
Old people smell like old people because they stop bathing as often. Stop brushing their teeth properly, and dress in the same clothing without properly laundering. Hygiene is the reason. I have a partner who is in his 70s and he takes care of himself. He doesn’t smell like “old people”.
My grandparents smelled wonderful..their house always smelled awesome on wash day..grandma dried her clothes outside then starched and ironed them..lemons bo beep clorox and washing suds and still everything was spotless..her skin smelled good and her night cream was perfumy. I still buy things that smell like their house.

Edit- I don’t purposely smell kids, I have younger brothers and my family know other families that have children and the scent usually permeates throughout the houses and cars. Also, my nose is weirdly sensitive to the point where I can identify who’s from a farm and if something is pretty old.
I don't think we know as much about it as we think we do. I believe the smell is actually a combination of chemicals, like cortisol and seratonin. My brother and I were both abused by narcissistic parents, and we both traded off Golden child / scapegoat child roles. During the scapegoat child roles, each of us developed a scent that I have come to associate as the smell of depression. When visiting my grandparents, I was able to pick up on that smell. I think that smell is actually the end, mentally, in that person's mind, and that mental shift causes physical changes in their body, including the chemicals their body produces. It also changes their posture, instead of holding up their body weight with the inside and outside of the knees, they depress, and leave it all up to the lower back to 'pull' the body upwards, instead of 'lifting' the body up with the legs. That's my theory based on several surgeries that left me crippled overnight in much the same way, but it wasn't until my friend's abandoned me that it became chronic/unaddressable, and when the medical community started gaslighting me, I gave up. That's when things started getting really bad, including the depression sink and the change between heart, lungs, knees, and pelvis/lower back that immediately followed their betrayal/abandonment. Which is probably exactly how old people feel when their families are no longer around. Take time to visit your older relatives. Loneliness kills faster than any disease.
Have you searched into alternatives to Western Medicine? Your absolutely on it. I am changing my body shape intentionally with foods , various body movements, intermittent fasting and sleep routine.
You really have a very valid point here. I'm in my early 60s but have always lived a lonely rough life. Now when I go through a minimum of trauma my body reacts and can take a week or more to recover. Just going for dental fillings can make me unable to move or bath for up to a week. Yes, be careful how you treat others or allow others to treat each other..

My husband is in his 60's and I believe as you get older the foods that have sharp smells, like onions and garlic do have a different reaction to your bodies chemistry than when you are young.

My great grandma didn’t use perfume that I know of, but always smelled nice. She used Dial soap, washed her face with Pond’s Cold Cream, and used Vaseline for her Eczema. The Vaseline part may sound gross, but I never knew she had eczema when I was growing up because she had very soft skin! 😊

Sometimes when I don't feel well I can't manage a full shower or bath. A thorough bed bath prevents smelling bad but doesn't clean away the pheromones. It's not horrible, just a bit musty.

as a former paramedic I can confirm that all nursing homes share a distinct odor. Though I always assumed its due to some commonly used chemical or medicine 😮

I had a perforated colon last October and spent a week in the hospital, on the third day I began to smell an odor all it reminded me of is old people. It took two months for my body to reset and get rid of that smell it’s a bit disturbing being 45 and having that smell.

It's a little like opening a pack of baby wipes and taking a huge sniff, but also you're in a sawmill and there may or may not be a dog running around. Once you get a nose for the scent, it's unmistakable. I remember being in a laundromat with my mom (who also worked in nursing homes) once and a little tiny old lady walked in and both of us knew instantly. I was like "Why does it smell like old people" and then the old lady came around the machines and we were like "oh no oh god I hope she didn't hear that"

My father is 88. He showers everyday, uses Old Spice aftershave, brushes his teeth and applies deodorant too. He's always dressed when he's puttering in the garden. He never looks disheveled. If old people smell a little stale, they may be dealing with dementia or depression or they feel like they don't have a reason to bathe or change their clothes. I know several people who gave up on hygiene in their 40s.☹
Also could be diabetes or gut issues. My dad isn't that old but his breath almost smells like methane gas i dont even know how to describe it... its like slightly sweet, fermented sort of disinfectant smell. I haven't confronted it to him yet but it seems like a health issue tbh.

As someone who works at a senior living home, I can confirm you don't really smell the typical "old people" when you're near them or when you walk in the building (depends on the amount care put into the building, like cleaning). Most of the residents actually bathed and sometimes wear perfume or cologne for events. I'll say it depends on the type of elderly person that can take care of themselves or cant due to disabilities or disorder. The residents are very sweet and wise at my job, which I'm thankful for. 🥰
Yes even a not so old person who doesn't bathe thoroughly has that smell. They may shower but not scrub hair and neck and ears and belly with soap..
Not to be argumentative, but I can confirm that my 77yo mother started getting the very distinctive old ppl smell 1-2 yrs ago. Old ppl DO have distinctive odor. That's why it has its own, distinctive name, differenting it from regular b.o.
I've bn told old ppl think they dont need to shower as often bc they don't get the regular b.o. stench anymore & cant smell themselves.

I think it is BECAUSE of old and SAD memories: my grandmother die when I was a Little child. When she was alive I never smelled her but when she died they left her for almost 2 days in the dinning room where we could say goodbye to her (it was in the end of 80s). And that time I smelled something like SOUR, a Little SWEET and BITTERLY TERRIBLE SMELL.
And that is how it smells when you're around 2 or more older people.

I believe when some elderly smell it is because edit is a condition with them, like some kind of illness or the person can take baths for themselves or simply weren’t very clean all their lives. It is sad that they are investigating this kind of issues with the elderly, like we never will get older in the future. 😔

Old people smell like old people because they stop bathing as often. Stop brushing their teeth properly, and dress in the same clothing without properly laundering. Hygiene is the reason. I have a partner who is in his 70s and he takes care of himself. He doesn’t smell like “old people”.

I don't think we know as much about it as we think we do. I believe the smell is actually a combination of chemicals, like cortisol and seratonin.
My brother and I were both abused by narcissistic parents, and we both traded off Golden child / scapegoat child roles. During the scapegoat child roles, each of us developed a scent that I have come to associate as the smell of depression. When visiting my grandparents, I was able to pick up on that smell.
I think that smell is actually the end, mentally, in that person's mind, and that mental shift causes physical changes in their body, including the chemicals their body produces.
It also changes their posture, instead of holding up their body weight with the inside and outside of the knees, they depress, and leave it all up to the lower back to 'pull' the body upwards, instead of 'lifting' the body up with the legs. That's my theory based on several surgeries that left me crippled overnight in much the same way, but it wasn't until my friend's abandoned me that it became chronic/unaddressable, and when the medical community started gaslighting me, I gave up. That's when things started getting really bad, including the depression sink and the change between heart, lungs, knees, and pelvis/lower back that immediately followed their betrayal/abandonment.
Which is probably exactly how old people feel when their families are no longer around.
Take time to visit your older relatives. Loneliness kills faster than any disease.

Now when I go through a minimum of trauma my body reacts and can take a week or more to recover. Just going for dental fillings can make me unable to move or bath for up to a week. My grandma always spelled amazing… both of them actually. I used to curl up with her clothes when I had to leave and cry and smell her…, I still take her sweater out to smell her… she smelled like roses ❤
That's her perfume of course. Their actual skin has a different scent.

My great grandma didn’t use perfume that I know of, but always smelled nice. She used Dial soap, washed her face with Pond’s Cold Cream, and used Vaseline for her Eczema. The Vaseline part may sound gross, but I never knew she had eczema when I was growing up because she had very soft skin! 😊

What adds to the old people smell is the fact that they tend to wear decades old clothing, and live around antiques and their old stuff from their youth. That creates the old people "musk".

I work in one, and frequently visited one as a kid. While I can’t smell much in it now, if you asked me what old people smelled like when I was a kid, I would’ve said poop and farts
Old people may smell like cucumber when they take care of themselves, being close to nature, no vices like smoking and drinking, and yes! Kindness to people.

I've hugged a lot of old people and to me some of them smell like just washed laundry (with no fabric softener), clothes line drying in the hot sun.l like that smell and I like old people.They know more than young people about living.

I know the smell they mean. It's stronger in a clinical setting and if a person has been ill and hygiene might be an issue ( not basic hygiene).
Sometimes when I don't feel well I can't manage a full shower or bath. A thorough bed bath prevents smelling bad but doesn't clean away the pheromones. It's not horrible, just a bit musty.

I am now going into old age happily knowing that I'll smell like cucumbers. The unpleasant smell is from stale clothes and dusty houses with old furniture and furnishings 👍. Before anyone comments:- an elderly relative's home smelled for years until lockdown when they had nothing better to do than clean. The end result was a much much better smelling home 🌼 🌻 🌸 🌹

No. As you age, your body releases different chemicals, and it’s something most can’t avoid. It doesn’t mean you’re smelling badly, just different. Babies smell differently to teenagers, and teenagers smell differently to adults. You must know this? And, everyone has their own particular smell, that is only theirs. I swear, I could sniff my husband out of a lineup of 500 men. Without doubt. You would have your own smell, amongst other more common smells.
