This song, according to Donald, is a story told from the point of view of an American expat in Cuba at the moment of the Cuban Revolution in 1958 when all the American colonial influences were thrown out of the country. The lyrics make a lot more sense when you listen to them from that perspective. Another one of Donald's wonderfully cryptic short stories. Such a great record.

Mel Tormé, the "Velvet Fog," covered "Walk Between The Raindrops" and "The Goodbye Look," backed by Marty Paich's Dektette, and would often claim Donald Fagen as "one of America's greatest living composers." For your own enjoyment, you should check Mel's versions out.

"Won't you pour me a Cuban Breeze, Gretchen?" Love, love LOVE this song! Greg Phillinganes' synth is the vibraphone (or steel drum) sound on this song. Can't wait for you to finish this album so you can listen to it in all its splendiferous-ness! Thanks to JK for this great one, an obvious pleasure for our friends to react to!

Greg Phiilinganes' marimba-sounding synthesiser creates that 'steel-drum' sound and together with Jeff Porcaro's drum rhythm a very latin beat is created. Larry Carlton's guitar work is as always spot on and then you have what you called, Donald's sinister-sounding lyrics. Fagen loves writing these little epithets about life, be it a revolution, communist threats, a lost love or death. A similar song, 'Mary Shut the Garden Door' off 'Morph the Cat' , has lyrics that also talk about a revolution and paints a picture of desperation and fear. Thanks for playing.

I heard the "NightFly" when it came out in 82. It is an amazing record, every single track is golden! The video for New Frontier was popular on MTV (starring Rick Moranis). It is a perfect record in every way in production, engineering and it's songs. It is considered a "Concept" album centering on the world of the 1950's (starting with the space race, civil rights, American Cutlure, Multi Cultural relationships, late night Jazz, Cuban missle crisis/cold war etc.) and you can hear these themes in every track in the lyrics. The Sinister mood they are mentioning are the Fagan lyrics - the social commentary about the exodus from Cuba as the tensions start to rise. So well written, so many levels of meanings, the cadence and rhythm are a master class in songwriting. This is one of my Desert Island Albums

The first time I heard this song I had to do a double take. The steel drums threw me off. So creative! This album is probably responsible for my love for Bossa Nova music, and my love for the chill music of Michael Franks.

I've been a huge fan of SD since I first heard "Do It Again" in 1972. Michael Franks, I came across in a video in the 80's of his "The Camera Never Lies" tune and like Steely Dan, I went all in!! I have every recording Michael Franks has ever done and seen him in concert twice. I just think he is such a prolific song writer, just genius. It's like Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, both of whom I absolutely respect as musicians and songwriters like Michael.

Yes it was done by Dion and later by the Four Freshmen. Lends itself to jazz very nicely even though it was a Rock and Soul song initially.
Ray Charles had a great ballad named Ruby. Marty Robbins did Ruby Ann. And then Kenny Rogers did Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town.

I think this whole album sounds very much like Steely Dan. Just super mellow. It was produced by Gary Katz, who produced all their albums. It's also chock full of amazing musicians who played on various SD albums over the years. Larry Carlton, Jeff Porcaro, Brecker Brothers and the list goes on and on. This was solid gold for me. Thanks for revisiting it! Enjoy!

Great album. Every song is fantastic. Can't believe that no one has given Ruby Baby any love. It's a cover of an old Drifters song (the only cover that SD/DF ever did, I believe) that has just an incredible arrangement, incredible rhythm track, (Jeff Porcaro from Toto on drums) a tasty guitar solo by Larry Carleton and a perfect piano solo by Greg Phillinganes. Musicians that I know marvel at how DF took a simple song and totally made it something much more complex and groovy.

The Nightfly is a concept album about growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s,. Fagen's second album, Kamakiriad, and his third, Morph the Cat, form what's called "The Nightfly Trilogy", which made sense until he released his fourth solo album (Sunken Condos) a few years later. All are fine albums, as are Steely Dan's Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go.

Not a good song on this album! They are all fantastic if not epic!❤️ The Good news is that soon you will have listened to everything on this record and that’ll be wonderful for you because you deserve it. The bad news is Steely Dan is a finite resource and when that day comes we will all have a tears in our eyes 😥when you’ve heard it all and we can’t watch you respond anymore. But that’s not really true because I still go back and watch you respond to the ones I’ve already went to respond to I still enjoy the hell out of it. Maybe there’s not such a thing as a goodbye look since We can always rewatch it. Great reaction, always exciting to see another Steely Dan song enter your ears. 👍👍👍

"Won't you poor me a Cuban breeze, Gretchen", one of my favorite Fagen lines. Anyone who is a history buff or has seen Godfather II knows Castro toppled the Batista government New Year's Eve and by January 1, 1959, was in total control. There became an instant clamor, especially by Americans with murky ties to Batista, to get the hell off the island as quickly as possible. That's what Donald is trying to do here because he got the goodbye look meaning you better leave quickly, or you will be planted in Cuban soil forever.

I believe the instrument you're hearing is a steel drum which is a popular in the Carribean. Of course, it could be some synthesized version of the actual instrument, but I think the steel drum is the sound they're going for here. "I know the story, I read the book. "I know a fella with a motor launch for hire
A skinny man with two-tone shoes
'Cause tonight, their planning a small reception just for me
Behind the big casino on the sea"
Fagen has this amazing talent of evoking things without naming them. The Cuban Revolution, dealing cocaine, getting busted for pot, dealing LSD... on and on. What a master. Thanks, and all the best!
Bonus: the lyrics, from the SteelyDan website.
The surf was easy on the day I came to stay
On this quiet island in the bay
I remember a line of women all in white
The laughter and the steel bands at night
Now the Americans are gone except for two
The embassy's been hard to reach
There's been talk and lately a bit of action after dark
Behind the big casino on the beach
    The rules are changed
    It's not the same
It's all new players in a whole new ball game
Last night I dreamed of an old lover dressed in gray
I've had this fever now since yesterday
Wake up darling they're knocking the Colonel's standing in the sun
With his stupid face the glasses and the gun
    I know what happens
    I read the book
I believe I just got the goodbye look
Won't you pour me a Cuban breeze, Gretchen?
I know a fellow with a motor launch for hire
    skinny man with two-tone shoes
Cause tonight they're arranging a small reception just for me

A CD of this album, usually a reference master type disk has been used for years by concert sound engineers setting up the PA systems. The dynamics and production are so flawless that if you tune a sound system with this record, it will sound its best. Another truly stunning Donald Fagen effort.

I still need to buy this album! I have' Kamakiriad' but somehow missed 'The Nightfly'. Anyway, here's another reminder of what I am missing. Thanks JK, being Dan member #1 brings with it a certain responsibility, high quality requests are required and you've set the bar nice and high!

Can't wait till you get to Donald Fagen's Morph the Cat.... You will also love Ruby Ruby as mentioned! Nothing makes you two smile like the Fagen genius. Which means you know "wot's wot", as the British say. Maxine remains the lushest, smoothest most beautiful thing Donald was involved with. Still so glad you got to hear it.

Cuban change of government as earlier mentioned. He had to get out of Cuba. Castro was taking over. Had a boat for hire. Read up on what was said about the making of this album. It reflects on things from his younger days. What was going on in the world and socially.
