Thanks Ben, once again a great film. Very interesting how this shaft changes from vertical to an incline. The view back into the shaft from the balance chamber is impressive. Well done for rescuing the pigeons 😉
Thank you guys for showing us down this shaft 👍 If it wasn't for your videos we would never know what's down these 'holes'! The shaftsmen back in the day were hard grafters...incredible physical work. Thanks and stay safe.
Well done for bolting the grill back on. Makes you alot more responsible than many others who cut them off and make no effort to make it safe after the trip . Nice job 👏 great video 📹
At a change of angle in the shaft surely you were looking at just an angle bob chamber rather than a balance bob, hence the 3 heavy timbers to which the hinge would be fixed. For such an awkward explore down such a shaft it's a well made and informative video.
I've stood on that grate and looked down that shaft a few times and always wondered what it was like. And thanks to you now I know! Cheers. Great video and always intresting.
Nine one rescuing the pigeons, and also the way you kept that as a surprise in the editing. Amazing to think of the workers back in the days when that mine was being created and worked. Thanks for the technical info too.
Two flew off, one sat there and refused to move while a walker picked one up and took it home to give some food so I least a couple made it. They certainly had better chance up top than left behind.
pity its flooded, did this few years ago when the shaft in the valley was open, This dropped into middle adit the we could access Sir Fred's. We dropped this to the bottom and saw some amazing stuff
Always wanted a look down there so thanks for the opportunity. I know I’ve read that Jack Trounson was involved with the last attempt to check Peevor for possible reopening. The shaft they looked at was choked and in an attempt to remove it with explosives all they achieved was to blow the choke further down the shaft. Can’t remember which shaft it was without digging the books out though.
Fantastic explore!! I’d like to find a graphic explaining and showing how that mineshaft pump actually worked?! From the surface Steam-engine with it’s Rocker-arm and the Balance-bob (Angle-bob) and Clapper-valves, removing water.
Cheers glad you enjoyed it. Couldn’t leave the pigeons down there. 2 flew off but the other two were a bit past it. A lady came by and took the worse one to try and bring it back to health at home rather than leaving it for a fox etc
Cheers, it’s slowly more popular. When I first put vids up I hardly had any views at all so in comparison it’s going great really . Will film some more when I get a chance
A short but really interesting video Ben! Shaft seemed to get dryer as you went down and nice to see underground balance pit and still bits of timber there.I spotted the concrete before you said about it! Probably done in the last working in the 30s That slot in the rock may go back to when they up graded the engine. Looking forward to your return visit in the summer!👍👍
Amazing, a trip back in time! There is a fenced off mine opening not far from tolvaddon fire station-might be worth a look. Happy to show you. Cheers Ben👍🏻
First visited this trio in 2014 and while peering through the grille a load of pigeons rushed out of a hole beside the grille and made me jump. Seems their antecedents are still around. Think the shaft can be readily classed as an "ass twitcher" ; looks like you were well done in by the time you got back to the collar! Always like your vids as they are good quality and not jerking all over the shop like some!
There are shafts at Ding Dong Mine near Pendeen which are open, and with stone-lined collars, which may be worth a look? Also Higher Bal Shaft (Guide Shaft) at Levant, which is the one with the massive retaining wall beside the road above Levant proper. The shaft is gridded over, has gated access from the road, and underlies at a steep angle beneath the engine house.
Have had a look at ding dong but never been underground… sounds like quite a rabbit warren ! Yep I know the one at levant, again never been down it though. So many mines, so little time !
Beauty Ben. Cheers. All my best to the Carnsew Clan. (Pigeon pie is bleddy ansum mind😉: Few taties, bitta turnip, 'andful of peas, a carrot an' a drop a sticky grevvy)😊.
When I was checking out Peevor I thought well that shaft is definitely off limits! I wonder where that tiny coffin level went, and why it's there, seems at odds with the otherwise more modern mine.
I think that’s the middle adit or shallow adit maybe. It’s collapsed one way and very very narrow the other but it’s possible with some digging may lead to some older shallow workings. Unfortunately the air down there is very poor for any kind of manual work. You may find you breathe all the oxygen up and struggle to get back out. 😬
Also, did you mean it when you said 45°? It looked a lot steeper than that on the map you showed, unless of course it wasn't to scale. I mean the part where it becomes disgonal obviously. I thought the map looked more like about 70°.
@@BenoCamlooking at this video again 3 months later. Very cool shaft and balance bob pit. Great for rescuing the pigeons. Awesome that those shafts are still open.
Sounds deep ! Assuming it’s mostly underwater now? Coal mines tend to be pretty bad for gas especially after they close. They tend to seal them up pretty well for that very reason
Awesome footage! The descent looked like a videogame. Since it's flooded, does that imply something about the County Adit? That the drainage to it is blocked here, or somewhere else? Also watch yourself for signs of bird flu. It is still about apparently.
Cheers, yes it almost looks a bit green screen cgi the drop in 🤣 The mine should be connected to county adit but the fact the water is 20m higher than it should be implys that the connection through may have collapsed and only a small amount drains through now. I know it is explorable in summer so will have to retry then. As for the pigeons … I did think that at the time 😬 they just looked so sad down there waiting to die, and I wore gloves and washed my hands well when I came out 💪🤣
I was out looking for a colony of cornish black bees that is just up the track from there. A bit further on is a small quarry with a gated adit. Have you looked in there...?
You need to find the shaft that leads to workings, it's away from the engine houses. I was a bit disappointed you didn't explore the upper adit. God bless
Think they either damaged the feathers or it was such a smal size shaft they couldn’t work out how to spiral up in a short diameter that long a distance
11:24 Monkeys got me laughing hard. I've worked as a technician to antennas and I was used to all of tools you are working with. We all don't know exact name of the tool you used to climb, be we all know it's "monkey" 😅🤣 Edit: at 4:43 tool you've used do descend we called "grigri" btw
Yeah will give it a retry then. It’s supposed to be connected to the county adit so assumed it would drain. Must be a collapse somewhere along the way holding the water back !
So glad you rescued those pigeons ❤
Two were in pretty good shape the other two may well be fox food but at least they have a better chance up top.
well done for rescuing the pigeons pard
Thanks Ben, once again a great film. Very interesting how this shaft changes from vertical to an incline. The view back into the shaft from the balance chamber is impressive.

🙂👍
Thanks for the video that I could watch from my armchair, sipping a nice cup of tea, wrapped in my warm blanket.
Ha no problem glad that you enjoyed it

Thanks for rescuing the pigeons 🎉❤
Well done for bolting the grill back on. Makes you alot more responsible than many others who cut them off and make no effort to make it safe after the trip . Nice job 👏 great video 📹
Cheers , but can you imagine the fallout if we didn’t put the grill back on 🤣
At a change of angle in the shaft surely you were looking at just an angle bob chamber rather than a balance bob, hence the 3 heavy timbers to which the hinge would be fixed.

Yes I was all confused and not seen many angle bobs before. Most of the mine shafts he have here are vertical so it’s an unusual one
I've stood on that grate and looked down that shaft a few times and always wondered what it was like. And thanks to you now I know! Cheers. Great video and always intresting.

Nice touch saving the pigeons.

Was that before the landscaped the lot for walkers and made everything safe ?
Could not fault your video Beno cam
You are very Brave, dangling from a rope with nothing beneath you. ❤
It’s a shame it was flooded but I think we will take another look in summer

Great to see you back again Ben
Fantastic explore!!

Loved the camera work, weather and the pigeon rescue! Thanks for the video
Nice to see you back doing video
Cheers Tim takes me a while to get things together as I’m busy with a lot of other bits at the moment but I have a few more planned !
Excellent Ben 👌 crikey it was like descending into the bowl's of hell lol .. well done bringing the pigeons out 👍 Glyn
Cheers glad you enjoyed it. Couldn’t leave the pigeons down there. 2 flew off but the other two were a bit past it. A lady came by and took the worse one to try and bring it back to health at home rather than leaving it for a fox etc
You guys are very brave. There's no way you would get me bobbing up and down Sir Henry's Pumping Shaft like that.
This channel deserves more traffic, so interesting. From another Cornish youtuber (Redruth) keep up the good work!
Cheers, it’s slowly more popular. When I first put vids up I hardly had any views at all so in comparison it’s going great really . Will film some more when I get a chance

Sounds good ! I have not looked over that area, will look up some plans can probably tell you what it’s part of …
@@BenoCam yes please, perfect thanks👍🏻

Ha cheers. I do try to make them as best quality as I can but it is very hard going considering the conditions !
Great find thanks for sharing. liked and shared xx
Wow that is incredible man! Nice one!. 👍

Haha not much meat on them they were skinny and starving!
Another great informative video, really enjoyed this one👍
Cheers glad you enjoyed. It seemed a little disappointing when I filmed it and almost didn’t upload but I though the drop footage was worth it 🙂
Absolute brilliant video mate

It’s a shame you couldn’t go further, this one looked interesting going down
Nice one mate, Shame it's flooded but know of people who have gone a lot deeper when the water level is lower.
Yeah will give another try in summer I think
What a great team. Subbed!
So that kink in the shaft accounts for the stones I've dropped down there mkeing unexpected multiple noises 😊
Good one Matey coool

Nah that’s just my bad angle guess . What I guess I mean was “off vertical “
@@BenoCamlooking at this video again 3 months later. Very cool shaft and balance bob pit. Great for rescuing the pigeons. Awesome that those shafts are still open.
Keep up ur awesome videos

Hey Ben, have you ever been down the hole next to Carharrack AFC's pitch in the ting tang area? I always wonder how far that goes.
Nope never been down it. Always so many to take a look at there must be hundreds still to do at some point !
The coal mine I worked in for 15 years was 1200 yards in wales...I wish sometimes I could decent that shaft just once more.
Sounds deep ! Assuming it’s mostly underwater now? Coal mines tend to be pretty bad for gas especially after they close. They tend to seal them up pretty well for that very reason
Is the remaining angle down as much as 45°? I thought it would be considerably less than that.
Short and sweet , great pigeon save 😊 and shame it was flooded , are you doing a video on the Stalwart you got from Mr Hewes😊😊
Yeah it’s on the way. Just finishing the mk1 that’s all ready to swim then I will start the crane one 😍
Brilliant definitely looking forward to seeing them , 😊

Which other shaft ? The only other one I have seen has a raised stone collar and grill and doesn’t go.
I cannot imagine the toil of hard rock mining like this, with the tools available in the 18th century. But it's been done centuries longer than that.
Don’t forget that a lot of people also made a lot of money doing it when the only alternatives were fishing and farming
I would've thought those pigeons would know their way back up again. I guess im wrong.
Think they either damaged the feathers or it was such a smal size shaft they couldn’t work out how to spiral up in a short diameter that long a distance
"The Hanging Timbers Of Death" ha ha!

if you think i am going down there on that weedy bit of string your having a giraffe ;;;
🤣👍
Used to labour for Eric few years back 😂 was the last person to see on a video!!
Less flooded in the summer! We live in Cornwall, what are the chances!
Yeah will give it a retry then. It’s supposed to be connected to the county adit so assumed it would drain. Must be a collapse somewhere along the way holding the water back !
The air, due to vaporised pigeon guano will be terrible. Pre dynamite days make blasting powder with it.
It was poor at the bottom . Didn’t need the air tank but glad it was there!
Wow!
😊
Going down, ya. Climbing back up again, nah. 😂
It was actually a lot worse than it looked as my gear wouldn’t pull up it got snagged so I had to go down again and free it then climb out again 🤣
I can see Peevor from my house, Carn Marth is a nicer walking area with cracking views from trig point.
