💥💥QUESTION OF THE VID💥💥 What are *YOUR* top three favorite tabletop RPGs of all time?

    • @ninthoctopus204

#3 TUNNELS & TROLLS. As Ken St. Andre said, after he read the D&D rules for the first time, "What a great idea! What a terrble way to do it!"
And thus, T&T was born in his fantasy-fevered brain. For 45 years, T&T has successfully flown under the radar of both religious & rainbow puritans.

#2 . CALL OF CTHULHU ....but not the 7th Edition or that Pulp crap. Even 1E is still a fantastic system.
2E is my personal choice. In 2021, I ran a playtest of a module for Call of Cthulu & used 2E instead of 7E & it did not matter. We had a great time.
3 PCs. Two died, one went temporarily insane. Good times!

#1 CLASSIC MARVEL SUPER HEROES, TSR.
The first ttrpg that I fell in love with.
I love T&T. I love Call of Cthulhu.
I am IN love with MSHRPG.
Is it a perfect game, RAW? Nope.
And that is why it is so MARVELOUS. The system is adaptable & flexible.
I made it perfect for me & the players in my group always have a blast.

      1. It's not relevant to the channel. That company can fall into the ether and it would not affect the channel one bit.

1.) Call of Cthulhu: the game that got me into TTRPGs. 2.) Savage Worlds: A system I enjoy for general use play. 3.). Free Leagues D6 system one system i keep trying to get my group to play but won’t. Honorable mentions: Cortex based systems. *If you can tell I prefer a structured systems but that give wiggle room to storytelling.

I've been playing TTRPGs since the late 70s, so a top 3 list if tough for me. I've got about 7 games that are in my "top, favorite, love" category, but you asked for three, so here are three:
3 - Star Wars - Fantasy Flight Games - I love the storytelling dice system and how interpretive and flexible it is. And of course the world is rich and full but with lost of room in the galaxy for all those untold stories to unfold.
2 - The Morrow Project - Timeline Ltd. - I love the backstory/setup of this game, and I enjoy how the characters' job is to help rebuild civilization. It's a very noble, heroic game.
    1. - Hero Systems 4th Edition - Hero Games - The original generic, universal RPG. It taught me to build characters by understanding the game mechanics effects and not worrying about what form the expression the power/skill/gadget takes.

I grew up a Palladium kid of the '80s... So fully realizing a lot of you might scoff at these choices? I gotta go with (1) After the Bomb scenario for TMNT, (2) Heroes Unlimited, and (3) Robotech (with my favorite era being Invid Invasion/Sentinels). Over the years, I've had the most fun with these games.

    • @davidburton9690

One of the most fun I had in a setting as a player was in Palladium Rifts, with a ton of the sourcebooks thrown together by the gamemaster. We had a cyborg, a shazam-style superhero, a magic user, and a ninja in the same party. And the opposition was just as diverse, but the gamemaster was able to bring it all together coherently. Good system.

Numenera might be the closest I’ve ever felt to a “Breath of the Wild” feeling game for a d20. Normally d20 combat focused games aren’t for me, but that item, narration, and resource system is just so clean. Adore that.
My favorites are probably the Fate engine for making the spiciest fiction of Chekhov’s gun being the optimal approach for moving forward, and the coolest sanctity of advancement/power I’ve experienced.
Lumen SRD is so unapologetic about mechanics and action as intrinsically fun. Inspired by video games and emphasizing high speed of play.
The new Avatar Legends rpg is EXCELLENT with a techniques and balance system that really emphasizes teamwork and personal narrative. PbtA titles are awesome but don’t always hit the right game-y notes for me, but Avatar Legends twist the formulas hard and just right for me.
    • Runner-ups Voidheart Symphony and City of Mist for similar reason as Avatar Legends

  • @Raugornauth
    @Raugornauth ปีที่แล้ว +5

For me, my three are pretty easy. Third would probably go to Rotted Capes. Being able to play superheroes through a Marvel Zombies type story line is exciting, and it's mechanics work in making even fairly powerful heroes fall pretty quickly if they make a bad choice and get surrounded by even mundane zombies. Plus, it has a very unique initiative system that is fun to use. Second would go to Pathfinder 2e. It has a lot going for it that I really enjoy, and I've been digging into the world lore a lot more than I have for other fantasy ttrpgs like the one that shall not be named here. And first place goes to Of Dreams and Magic (a.k.a. ODAM). It is not the most mechanically sound ttrpg I've played but it's premise is amazing for any kind of game ranging from dark and creepy to over-the-top superhero levels of camp and excitement, and I had a so much fun running and playing it.

Honest question when it comes to One Ring. I find it has the same problem as Dragonlance, Star Wars, and Mass Effect...and that is that the big epic story has already been told. Anything we do in our group feel like leftovers. How do people get around that problem?

    • @RPGElite
      @RPGElite  ปีที่แล้ว +6

You get around it with imagination. 😉
There are stories that happened all over in Middle-Earth. The fact that your heroes did something that was every bit as pivotal but did not hit the front page doesn't make it any less impactful.
Plus, you're not trying to tell the same story. This is THEIR story, and can be every bit as epic as the one we know.
In other words, you're limiting yourself. Think outside the box. 👊🏿

1- Gamma World 2e. I've played it since the early 80s.
2- Star Wars by FFG. I like how your dice rolls can give you a success with a negative effect or a failure with a positive effect. You fail to sneak past the Trooper but he trips as he pulls his weapon.
3- Faith by Burning Games. You use playing cards instead of dice. You have a hand of number results that you choose when to use them in the scene. Very good SciFi.
I have the Star Trek starter but haven't played it yet. You don't have levels in this game which intrigues me.

    2. Mage the ascencion : Love the universe, and crunch of the Magic system. Once you understand ot, you can never really go back to another system of magic without asking yourself how you would do it in Mage.
    3. Shadowrun. God, this setting has EVERYTHING ! Fantasy, elves dwarves, troll, you name it, evil corporation, cool guns, magic, social subtexts of the cyberpunk genre... it's really great. I've played this games intensively for years without problem, and it was awesome.

Good question. It's like trying to pick your favorite child. Or my favorite Charlie's Angel. Up until a couple of years ago I would have included "The-Game-That-Shall-Not-Be-Mentioned" as part of that list, but they have pissed away any good feeling I previously had with the actions of their writers and developers and most recently their marketing department. Anyway, in no particular order
    1. Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition. It's a D20 rewrite of the Marvel FASERIP rules, and does an excellent job of mimicking the action of superhero comics. I have had more fun with this game than I have any other game. My favorite mechanic is the "hero point/complication" mechanics that really make it hit that silver/bronze age sweet spot. I play this with my son and my friends using the DC sourcebooks that Green Ronin put out awhile ago and we always have a blast. I really like Marvel Super Heroes as well, and play it any time I see it offered as a convention.
    2. Call of Cthulhu 7th edition. I have yet to find a game that gives the sense of horror and impending dread that the grandaddy of horror games gives. I was a backer for the 7e Kickstarter campaign, and even though it took forever to come through with the new books they were worth the wait. I love the changes to the mechanics, especially the implementation of the degrees of success and the idea of the player giving input to his/her bouts of madness.
    3. Dungeon Crawl Classics/Mutant Crawl Classics. No game I have found captures the gonzo weirdness of early RPG modules. From the setting to the 0-level character funnel to the sorcery tables and mutation tables to the multi page critical hit tables , it is, right now, my favorite fantasy RPG. And it has the courage to say "game balance be damned!"
Honorable mentions are Shadowrun 5th Edition and ICONs

    Answer of the Video:
~ Caveat: Out of respect for the channel, we shall not mention the Game Which Shall Not Be Named.
This is my current top 3 TTRPGs of all time, based on overall enjoyment over time ad multiple iterations, beloved by my entire group, not just me personally:
    3) OLD SCHOOL ESSENTIALS. This is what I learned on (in its original incarnation), and it is still the best at dungeon survival horror- hardcore mode. Maximum pucker.
    2) SAVAGE WORLDS. This TTRPG can't do everything, but it can do most things, and it plays like a superbowl party, with more explosions and style, and panache.
    1) EARTHDAWN (Any Edition). This game changed the way I designed, developed, and ran TTRPGs, and took our group to the heights of emotional storytelling. Triumph and tragedy. Hope and Shadow.

@@SOTMead It is definitely a sleeper. I can count on one hand the number of people I've met online and in person at dozens of cons who have had a "successful" experience with Earthdawn. Most will only mention how cool it is that the game's setting is intended to be a prehistory of Shadowrun's Sixth World. Also, like any work of art (music, film, visual arts, etc.) every game is going to appeal to some and not to others. This is natural and I don't take it personally. Finally, like most GMs, I have struggled with players lack of interest in learning new (or any) game systems or lore. I solve this by simply learning the entire system myself and then doing all the crunchy stuff for them and just letting them roll dice. Earthdawn rolls a LOT of dice, and those dice can explode, so they loved that. After a few sessions, some of them fell in love with the setting, so I got lucky, that's all.

    Amazing video.
Totally agree with the 2th and 3th unfortunately, didn't have any experience with marvel super heroes.
Anyway, my favourite list follow bellow (but I change my mind from time to time)
    1- 7th sea 1st edition
Cinematic cloak and dagger pirate action with unique a setting. The system is a bit crunchy, but I love it
2- legend of the 5 rings 3rd and 4rt edition.
Extremely romanticised samurai setting with a tense consequences if you don't behave properly. A amazing setting for roleplay the nuances of honor and duty.
It's pretty letal too, don't be to cocky.
    3 - Mutant year zero
Playing as a mutant on a post apocalyptic setting is amazing. Love how tense it is to try to gather supplies for your group and how everything can go bad if you just scout the wrong place.
The push mechanics to reroll is amazing, the players can risk their health and supplies to try again is a good way to give more options to them.
The need to improve your arc and explore your map are a juicy extra experience.
    Love freeleague publishing products.
    Sorry for the bad English

It’s a good list. I admit I was blindsided by Numenera as I fell out of love with the Dragon Game around 3E and figured Monte Cook would just do his take on that sort of thing. I love the simplicity and elegance of the system, as well as the massive, massive world. My friend Ziploc’s got to be thanked for introducing me to it.
My top three at the moment, as these things often change, are:
    * Blades in the Dark - I love a good heist, I love the world and the tools the system uses. The Devil’s Bargains are great, the crew sheets, the whole thing.
    * Trophy Gold - This is how you do dungeon-crawling dark fantasy. Make it like A24 produced it, beautiful, and horrible. It’s the most artful and the most video gamey that I’ve seen an RPG be. It feels trite to say it’s the Dark Souls of RPGs, but it kind of is.
    * Masks: A New Generation - Like you, I’m a big supers fan. I came into it during the 90’s, so I”m all about Generation X, Young Justice, all of that. This game captures the uncertainty of being a young hero and not knowing what to do with your life or powers.

For me, well, my all-time favorite has to remain Exalted; the 3rd edition is the best yet rules-wise. It can be a little on the crunchy side for some tastes, but "fantasy game that deliberately pulls from the things D&D largely ignored" is still a great thing to play. Rapidly taking second has been the Trinity Continuum games from Onyx Path; Storypath hits a sweet spot of 'borrowing the stuff from more narrative-first games that work while actually giving more mechanical support than make something up' for me and I love the science fiction tones of Aberrant and Aeon. Finally, while I don't get to *play* it as much as I like, Unknown Armies is still my platonic ideal of a good action horror/occult RPG. Honorable mention goes to Fabula Ultima which has really impressed me, but I haven't played it long enough to count it as a favorite, yet.

I have not played as much as I would like but, my three would be (no order):
    - Vampire the Masquerade 3rd edition (or 2.5 as some say). I have always liked the figure of vampires, and the myths and story of this game were a big plus. The sistem is not perfect, but still useful for what the game looks for.
    - Legend of Five Rings 1st edition. Not a perfect game, not even close, but really funny.

I have been interested in picking up some RPG materials related to the Lord of the Rings so that I could play with my dad (he's a huge Tolkein fan). I mostly had my eyes on Free League's RPG books for The One Ring 2E and the system that shall not be named on this channel. I really like the sound of hope and shadow as you describe them, but I know very little about either edition of The One Ring otherwise. Can you elaborate on ways that Free League's system does or doesn't match up? Do you have a review of one or both systems somewhere that I can watch?

#3, Call of Cthulhu (including Delta Green) - Not easy to run and gets a bad rap because too many people have a terrible first experience with it, but when it sings, it siiiiiiiings.
#2, Marvel Super Heroes - Or, FASERIP as our crew calls it. Just everything you need in a superhero RPG. The Karma rules are solid and often overlooked because they don't fit the current zeitgeist, but I like "great responsibility" with my "great power," thankyouverymuch.
#1, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st Edition - You can keep the cards and all the other props and nonsense that got added in later editions. Give me a Rat Catcher, a Wizard's Apprentice, a Roadwarden, and a Boatman as they try to save their muddy village from Beastmen against all odds and sense of self-preservation. The pathetic aesthetic has been abandoned for the HeroHammer IP, but I prefer the gritty humble "heroes" of 1st Ed.

My favorite is Ishanekon: World Shapers. I am biased, of course, since I specifically created this game to be my perfect game. As somebody who loves roleplaying, story potential, and mechanics and how they strengthen each other, I created it to give you a ton of choices to truly build a mechanical representation of the character you have in your head. You probably won't like it as much since it is number focused and does not have any built-in lore (yet), but I think you would appreciate the cinematic action, which is basically a built-in rule of cool that allows you to get totally creative and ignore all the rules.
Second place goes to Guild 66, a game about hunting Monsters. It is heavily inspired by Monster Hunter and the Witcher games. You know a TTRPG is good when you get massacred in your first game and still have a ton of fun.
I would put D&D 5e into third place since it was the first TTRPG I got really into, but since the whole OGL 1.1 fiasco, I do not think they deserve it anymore. And let's be honest. It is mechanically a mess.

Personal favorite at the moment is Cyberpunk RED, just because I love scifi settings and the rules really convey feeling like a chromed up badass. Or, in my case, a really fighty Fixer with a rotary grenade launcher named Boomer who likes to say "I can talk my way out of anything I can't punch or blast my way out of...you'd be surprised how often it lines up that way and not the other."
However I'm learning Starfinder and it's rapidly becoming my absolute favorite. I started TTRPGs in the 3.5 to 4.0 transition and my DM was a 3.5 loyalist, which I quickly followed. So having all that lovely crunch to perfectly tune my character feels amazing. That and I frickin' love the setting; expansive science fantasy space opera shenanigans make me very happy.
Dang though, Numenera looks amazing. I'm not big on Tokein and never been into the superhero thing, but Numenera just feels like my kind of jam. Gonna check it out, especially if it's a simpler system. Thanks much my dude o7

Only 3...that's pretty tough. I guess as follows then:
Fantasy: Known World before they wrecked it with Wrath of the Immortals. Back when Gazeteer and Hollow World were still a thing
Modern/SF/mecha: R Talsorian homebrew combo of Mekton Z and Cyberpunk that I use. Note that I use 2d6 rather than D10s as that makes critical success and failure rarer and makes it easier for me to calculate encounters that won't go bonkers.
Everything else: BESM D20, and yes, I realize that's a bit like saying a generic rules set but I find it gave me the option for just about any level of heroics or rediculousness or supernatural or any combo thereof I would need. Best $14 I ever spent on a book.

Call of Cthulhu/Delta Green are number one currently. They're essentially the same system, plus it allows me to cshoose four instead of three :D I have become a huge fan of investigative games, and the horror aspect for this Lovecraft fan is a plus. And you never really peak as a roleplayer until you play a game where survival is so uncertain, and where you may be asked to roleplay your character losing his or her marbles. IMO, of course.
Second is Traveller. I've played on and off since 1979, and have begun really digging Mongoose's version. I also have Traveller5, but it's pretty dense, and I haven't taken the time to really read it through. The additions Mongoose has made to the lifepath system for creating character is great, and the similarity to Classic Traveller makes it feel so familiar.
Hero System wraps up the list. This one I began playing in 1981, back when it was Champions, and much time was invested in that game. As a universal system, I personally wouldn't use it for any genre other than Superhero games, as even now it seems to fit that niche best. Any other genre I'd probably use either GURPS or Savage Worlds, depending on how much detail I want.
I've played my share of Fantasy RPGs, and I've just burned out on them. Maybe if someone came up with something truly original (ie, no halflings or orcs or other Tolkien trappings) I might pick it up. In fact, I really like Modiphius's Conan -- low fantasy and no PC races beyond the ethnicities of Hyperborea. Similarly, well done urban fantasy would work for me, too. I'd love to learn and play Changeling The Lost, for instance. Just no "modern D&D," please.
I've also been shying away from level/class-based games, though I've made an exception for Stars Without Number, and probably would for that author's other games.
So yeah, that's what I like and what I don't like.

Shadowrun is top for me. The bleak dystopia but fantasy elements poured in. I think I like 4th Edition the most. The player runners don't usually skew heroic, but that just depends on the table. You can run an idealistic struggle against the corps, or you can just play mercenary focused and work for those same corps. Most runs will play out like a heist, planning, characters playing to their strengths. Runners start competent in an area or two, and are usually successful in those areas. Game is very crunchy as written, but many groups discard things that they find cumbersome.
My players and I enjoy the planning and legwork involved to prepare for a run. I always try to leave some vulnerabilities hidden somewhere that they can exploit for an advantage, or if the players think of something that I did not, hell yeah it is now a part of the mission.

#3 Black Void. The idea of scrapping humanity out of the mud in an uncaring universe speaks to me, and the artwork is amazing.
#2 Feng Shul2. While the Kung fu action can wear a bit, it is so easy to modify to meet almost any genre.
And #1 Fantasy Flight's Rouge Trader. First Game I was successfully able to GM, First game I was betrayed by my players in real life, only game I have played where I called out a horribly toxic GM and quite mid-session. But no matter how many other TTRPG books cross my desk, I am always drawn back into the familiar embrace of the Kronus Expanse. My mind drawing up new stories for the old crew, full of faith, firepower, and profit!

Marvel Superheroes (the TSR one) was coincidently the first RPG I played. Fond memories.
My top three (my favorite genre might become obvious):
    3. Lady Blackbird. Super easy mechanic-wise with enough room go deeper. Same can be said about the setting--just enough to hint at something larger that the players can fleshout at the table.
    2. Marvel Heroic (might be blasphemy, but I have made it a point to run a mini campagin in each of the Marvel interations and this was the only one I wanted to go back to. That new one they're playtesting looks like garbage so far though.
    1. Masks. The ultimate supers game imo. It also manages to be the perfect coming-of-age game similtaneously. Near flawless. I am always down to run one-shots of this (and have more than any other game) and have done three long campaigns that still have me feeling feelings about.

It's a completely different experience to using a VTT, or otherwise playing a TTRPG over the internet. What tabletop roleplay is to acting, forum-based roleplay is to writing.
If I could pick a second, it would be Exalted, even though I've never played it. I want to play it.

Marvel Superheroes was probably my favorite game for a good long while, we would play it after the weekly vampire larp and I was way more hyped to play Marvel than Vampire when we started playing. The powers and stunts are great, the universal table is amazing design because it handles literally everything at all power scales, and there's nothing stopping you from telling whatever story you want.
    1. OWoD - really versatile system and lots of powers and creatures to choose from, inter-creature balance is way less difficult to handle than people claim, the lore is all of human history and mythology, but with a twist, and is a fun system. Can easily replace DnD, CoC, Shadowrun/Cyberpunk, Star Wars, Star Trek, it's super versatile and the huge variety of enumerated powers with varying scales makes homebrewing custom content cake.
    2. Marvel Superheros, never really get to play it anymore so it's not higher. If there were nothing else to play, though, this would see more action at our table.
    3. Paranoia, because sometimes you need to break things up with utter shenanigans, and this game is utter shenanigans.
