It is still SUCH a tragedy to me that the practical effects got replaced with the CGI. I really hope that some day they release the original version if it even still exists.
A fan theory I've heard is that the "thing" was some kind of botched alien experiment, or random lifeform that assimilated/killed the original occupants of the crashed ship. Looking at the crawlspace tunnels, it seems that the ship wasn't built by or for the thing, but after it absorbed the crew it gained all the knowledge needed to operate it.
I recommend, if you haven't seen it yet, the 1951 film called "The Thing from Another World." It is the first film on this whole topic and, for example, clarifies, through the viewer's own conclusions, how it is possible for the creature to survive longer than 100,000 years.
He’s that’s basically what happened. See the “pilots” were out in a zoological expedition, gathering specimens from different worlds. It’s unknown if they knew they were picking up the thing, or if it was hidden as one of the specimens. But it got loose, attacked the pilots, and they went to crash the spaceship into what would’ve been a largely frozen earth at the time. I dunno why they didn’t just go into the sun, but who knows what was going down in the cockpit.
It's not really a fan theory, though I guess it's not quite canon either. They were originally going to show the alien pilots in this movie, and even made a full puppet for them, but they were ultimately cut from the movie. You can look up the BTS photos/videos to see what they looked like.
@munkeypantsman Thank you, I did. Too bad they, and their backstory of a zoological expedition accidentally picking up the thing thinking it was something indigenous was cut.
As a Norwegian it is good to see and hear my own countrymen speaking Norwegian unlike in of the first movie where they had actors that didn't know Norwgian, but instead tried to speak my language.
Oh no! It's better not knowing it's a prequel going into it (most people figured it was a remake when it was released). This one had giant shoes to fill. Even though it did not hold a candle to the original, I thought it was decent. It's a shame they chose to cover up all of the practical effects they were using in post-production. You could probably still find videos of the behind the scenes practical effects.
The best part about this film was going into it thinking it was just another reboot of an old film franchise, just like other films of the era, only to realize the horror that the epilogue is the prologue to the 1982 film.
Originally the effects were all practical with little CGI. We would even get to see the original alien pilots. Universal didn't like the effects and thought they were too cheesy so ordered them to be entirelly replaced by digital. They have little budget and little time to do that. There are tons of videos showing the original practical effets out there. They looked awesome.
Thats sad, that's my only real issue with this movie is that I can't help but compare it to the other with all the practical effects I loved. Didn't know they had tried to do it with practical...maybe they should release that cut!
To the people who keep insisting the filmmakers hid the fact that this movie is a prequel and " one knew at the time". That simply isn't true. Just because many people didn't understand that at the time or never learned that because they never saw the movie doesn't mean it was some big mystery. We knew it was a prequel, and that was one of the reasons it was exciting for fans leading up to the release.
An OK prequal... it's faithful. But despite what people say... was let down by having CGI. Especially when you know they made and filmed with good practical effects but the studio demanded it was all covered up with CGI... it's like they were trying to sabotage the film or were bribed by a separate effects studio.
0:43 That wasn't the original, 1982's The Thing was a remake of the 1951 film "The Thing from Another World" that was originally a book from 1938 called "Who Goes There?" 10:36 It's not, it is some alien creature that the thing is imitating. We never find out what it really looks like. 31:15 5 people. 31:57 4 32:30 3 more or less that time 38:20 Lars is still tied up at the camp. 40:37 Yes the American said "we didn't kill him". 40:58 No one knows, Kate might have gone back to the camp, found a map and used it to get to the Russian base or she dies right there. She clearly didn't stay at the camp or go to Outpost 31. 45:51 To be fair John Carpenter had 1 year to get things ready, Matthijs Heijningen only 4 months from the green light to the first day of shooting.
while the cgi was not that good, it help a lot to the nature of the creature. here is more violent, we had more movement. it also explain why in the USA base he was more calm and strategic, because the thing learns from its experience in the norwegian camp.
There's a story called "The Things" a story from the perspective of the thing which won multiple awards. It is considered non-canon though. Its like a 20 minute short story if you like the thing, its definitely a great read. Also Kate is actually Mary Elizabeth Winsted. The girl you guys were thinking of is Shantel VanSanten. But they both were in final destination movies so maybe that's why you got it mixed up lol.
@ I agree with you, I’ve seen reactions where people didn’t know (usually channels where it’s ran by someone who employs reactors) but it’s hard if you are doing everything yourself and you go to look up the movie to buy / rent or stream it will say it’s a prequel
The CGI was such a dumb move on the side of the studio. The production team had great looking practical effects but the studio insisted the VFX team render CGI creatures over the practical.
I watched this one in theater, didn't even know about the 1982 one back then😂 Then I watched the 1982 one later on. I enjoy this one, CGI almost didn't bother me at all in my first watch, the thing's designs are crazy, the paranoid is good and it really pays tribute to the thing 1982. If you remember, the bloody ax on the wall is the first thing Mac found at the Norwegian camp. I would love for them to do practical effect, like the thing franchise could be where they showcase crazy special effects. Too bad the studio changed it to CGI midway and that cost a lot so 2011 one didn't do well in the box office, so I doubt that we'll get another one🥲
"Isn't this the body they found [in the original]?" - you've only figured this out after it was burned? And not immediately when the fusing of the faces was happening?
I kind of liked it. Three if I remember the "first" was a remake and the older "From Another World" was pretty good as far as an older horror movie goes. Well I noticed how much work they put into to getting it to feel like the previous one and appreciated that touch. I do wish they would have co-opted some of the camera and lighting work from the 1982 since that was mostly my favorite thing, no pun intended, about it. Not over the moon about this one but the work shows and notable anyway.
Aww man. You guys already knew it was a prequel. It doesn't make the movie worse, of course, but it definitely takes away the fun factor when you know that going in. When this was in theaters, that wasn't a known fact, and was meant to be a surprise. Dah well. Great reaction anyway!
Enjoyed the film and, despite the studio intervention with CGI v practical, it holds up and is very interesting. . Now, my obligatory request for the Snyder trilogy! . Need you to watch MSN of Steel, BvS ultimate edition and Zack Snyder Justice League! . I would love to see your take on the brilliance of the Christ figure arc of a god sent to earth and raised by meager parents, birth , death, and resurrection of the savior of man.
i really enjoyed this prequel, of course it got hate as the first was so perfect...but it did a good job of seeing what happened just a few days before the first one! Argentina is likely the closest country with a decent hospital to where they are. I think kate was the cut wrists person in the first one so as not to risk it......
@@RaggedyPackTake your time! The last 3 of the series are (mostly) good. Hope you guys dig em. PS I still say you shouldn't bother with "Next of Kin". It was straight to streaming and doesn't have anything to do with the main series.
Its weird they chose to use cgi, really removed the viceral aspect of the movie. Its also weird because they actually made practical effects, but then decided to use cgi. Studio people are dumb.
There are so many take aways from this that apply to the original, In this the Thing was far more aggressive, maybe it didn't really see people as a threat. When it gets to the American base it is way more cautious. Also The metal thing, at the end of the original Childs is wearing his earring, but the thing would have figured out thats a give away. Honestly spending more time in "The Thing" universe is a treat. Also i felt bad for Lars after this one 😁
This movie got absolutely ripped to shreds before release, basically ensuring it was a flop at the cinema. A lot of people thought it was a remake of the original and got real mad at that, a lot of folk got really mad that it wasn't all practical FX work like the original -- as soon as they saw the CGI on the trailer they wrote it off. The development of this movie was a real mess. They tried to honor the original with practical work but supposedly blew through their budget with expensive animatronics that 'apparently' didn't work. I say apparently, because there's a few different stories regarding what happened there. If you're interested there is behind the scenes footage of the original animatronic work around somewhere, and it looked pretty good. I think there was a genuine sequel to the The Thing in the works but because the prequel absolutely bombed they were shelved, pretty much permanently. This franchise is cursed in terms of revenue, even the game was a disaster.
i would also think if they did go through with practical and not replaced them with CGI, they could have saved a sequel of the original. it’s just sad how they ditched all the practical efforts.
You can tell the writers really loved the original because they are faithful to the material. It's unfortunate that so many blast the movie because of the poor CGI and can't get past that.
One of them (Corey, I'm guessing, since he always asks if they're ready) is using streaming software, something like OBS, to stream the movie over a messaging service to the others. They're probably all in a streaming channel on Discord
I was 10 when John Carpenter's version came out. So it holds a special place in my heart. And (in my opinion) this one is not a great film, in general I was intrigued with what they did with the story line. It's interesting to say the least.

the thing rejecting metal objects was a nice adition to the lore. another great way to identify the creature beside the blood test.

It is still SUCH a tragedy to me that the practical effects got replaced with the CGI. I really hope that some day they release the original version if it even still exists.
