  • Hobart International Exhibition of 1894 was an urban planning disaster. Costing a fortune to build it was not made to last and torn down soon after. AFL stadium at Macquarie Point. Regatta Ground. War Memorial Cenotaph. History of Tasmania, Australia.

As a mainlander, Hobart is a breath of fresh air. No sky high concrete monsters. Viewed through mainlander eyes, Macquarie Point has such an opportunity to be transformed into something like Barangaroo Reserve in Sydney. Prime real estate, parkland for all time. Not concrete. Not everyone lives and breathes AFL.

It isn't just afl, it is a multi purpose stadium, international bands, monster trucks etc.

Thanks Angus, it seems like lots of Tasmanians seem to think that we will finally get the recognition some desire if only we get an AFL team and if the gods at the AFL decided to demand we desecrate the domain and regatta grounds with a stadium then that is the price we have to pay to be treated as the serious powerhouse economy that those in parliament would have us believe is our right. Meanwhile I for one would rather a light rail, a decent public hospital system, lots of medium density public housing, and the outlawing of Air B and B , Stayz, etc etc.

    • @angusthornett

Last I was there, seeing councils encouraging short term rental over permanent housing for residents was disappointing. The place is covered in old 'Pickers' huts but they can only be developed for tourist accommodation and so the locals were camped in tents on the Southern outlet.

    • @chasindigo
      @chasindigo 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

You don't get light rail without passengers, what does 20k every second weekend do to the profitability of the light rail?
If you want to ban airbnb and stayz, you will need to build hotels to house 3 to 5k worth of people every second week...
Such short sightness has got Tassie into this position in the first place.
Medium density housing is a council thing, they blocked the development across the river that could have helped solved it. Again it is the NIMBYs that are holding Tassie back.

Great video. Thanks for exploring the hidden history. I'd like to see the Derwent foreshore remain public access. It would be well suited to parks gardens and walkways. Maybe a few bbqs, an amphitheatre or marina. They could link it to the Botanical gardens. The AFL stadium would be better suited to a greenacre site close to the airport or other subrban site with good traffic access.

My first memories are from Hobart. I remember the house we lived in at Howra, but I think it has been demolished now. Tassie people used to talk about "mainlanders" with some degree of paranoia and a little bit of xenophobia which I can atest (and hopefully to the relief of the average Taswegian) is largely unfounded. I remember the shot tower and Port Arthur in a time when there was nothing to stop the kids playing in there with no barriers, walkways or guided tours. I believe my family may have been the last to brave the rickety old stairs to the top of the shot tower. I would love to hear your take on the shot tower, if it still stands and what it looks like now. Love your videos.

    Great video!
I thoroughly enjoyed your coverage of the Hobart exhibition building and its unfortunate fate. It’s shocking to see such a waste of resources and manpower. Speaking of which, if you need another example of sheer extravagance, look no further than the Lady Franklin Gallery (Ancanthe) in Lenah Valley. Built in 1843 when the area had fewer than 200 residents, this extravagant project seems to have set a precedent for poor use of public funds. If you haven't seen this building, we would love for you to exhibit it on your channel as well. Makes you wonder if our current politicians are taking inspiration from these historical missteps! (Missfits)
Sorry... edit... I see you have already done the Lady Franklin. Well done! Will watch it now.

I believe the AFL stadium would be better built at somewhere like Cambridge, where it’s close to where visitors arrive, easily accessed by locals, and in a place where plenty of parking can be made available. The current narrow minded concept only fulfils one of those points, and even then only if public transport improves in Hobart.

Sad to see that building lost as looked so grand, but yeah, it was never meant to be permanent.
I foresee the probability of an AFL stadium at Mac Point becoming that of the regatta pavilion in the not to distant future, i have no objection to a Tas team but a multi million dollar stadium in that location when there are far greater priorities that money could cover, hmmm.
That location for AFL stadium just would not work and doomed for failure, better off upgrading another facility and using that.

I was always under the impression that Hobart was quite resistant to development. I believe there was quite strong resistance to most development in Battery Point save a few obvious eyesores such as Empressive Tower and the red brick pub on Hampden Rd. Its amazing considering parts of Battery Point was pretty dodgy back in the day.

Another great video Angus...I hope the comments remain constructive on such a divisive subject as the development at Macquarie Point...having only moved here recently I am probably not fully qualified to comment but from what I have read this area has been the subject of much debate and projection in recent years but nothing has ever been put into motion? As a new resident I would not be too eager to see a stadium of the proposed size be placed there. Most perplexing to me is why the State and Federal governments appear to be willing to put over $500 million of taxpayers money into a stadium that will have limited use to Tasmanians (outside of AFL games, there is no solid evidence that artists would make stops in Tasmania) Surely the city and state should have worked together as soon as it was vacated to come up with a master plan for this site that meets the needs of the city and compliments the extended local area,.The $500 million would be better used to expand affordable housing and open public spaces in this project, Some of this area could be set aside for private housing and commercial development and the profits could supplement the cost of maintaining the public developments, all this being done while respecting the heritage of what this space means to all those who call lutruwita/Tasmanian home, past and present.

Congratulations on making the move. Hobart is our favourite city but family responsibilities prevent us from moving. Years ago there were rumours about building a new Royal Hobart Hospital on the Macquarie site, then selling off the old hospital. I agree, building a facility for a single sport seems a bit daft, although there’s the argument that it would bring visitors who would spend money, but it would take a bloody long time to get half a billion back!
