@@r.4315 LabradorIndependent There aren't any all time classics in series 8. The closest we got was with "Mummy on the Orient Express" and "Flatline". The only bad episodes are "Robots of Sherwood", "Kill the Moon" and "In the Forest of the Night" though. The rest of the episodes all range from very good to decent. The character arc of the Doctor is great, Clara and the Doctor's dynamic is interesting and the Missy story arc is simple and easy to follow. It also pays off well in the finale. So, I'd say series 8 is a solid series.
In terms of episode quality, I think series 9 is on equal terms with series 8, but what let's it down is the mishandling of 12's character at certain points, the story arc being messy and confusing and having a terrible payoff on top of that. Also, the finale completely undermining Clara and the Doctor's character arc, not to mention the previous two episodes "Face the Raven" and "Heaven Sent" (which is absolutely an all time classic). Episodes like "The Girl Who Died", "The Women Who Lived", "Sleep No More" and of course "Hell Bent" don't help matters.

Peter Capaldi is the one who actually insisted on dropping the romance “It would have been completely creepy,” he said in an interview. “It’s fine if you have handsome young men like Matt Smith and David Tennant, but as a father I felt it would be inappropriate.” The guy is just a pure class act.

I like how they already noticed this Doctor's vulnerability and different need for a companion (maybe because he's the first of a new regenaration cycle). Like Madame Vastra said, he doesn't have a mask anymore, and I think that's one of the reason this Doctor can also feel more alien.
The relationship between 12 and Clara is my favourite thing about Capaldi's era and the previous episode was mainly about setting that up. This episode is more about setting up threads and themes for the whole season.

    • @szabolcsmolnar4455
      @szabolcsmolnar4455 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes, they're already hitting on the major notes of the season, mainly 12's dilemma of who he is now. The season's gonna explore that question, but he himself will only have the revelation in the finale.
And I agree with you, Capaldi and Clara's run is entirely focused on their relationship and it's the most exciting part (even though almost everything is exciting during this tenure), and it's gonna be the major theme of season 9.

I actually think Danny’s an alright character and his dynamic especially with the Doctor I certainly find interesting .

  • @DextroDNAOfficial

I think the guys are kinda misunderstanding 12's personality. It's not that he doesn't find Clara unattractive, it's that he doesn't care what she looks like. It's not that he's insecure, it's that he doesn't care if people are judging him. It's not that he's not confident, it's that he's more honest when he doesn't know what he's doing.
The Twelfth Doctor just does not care about what people think, what they say, or what they do. He's a bit of a dick, and he's too old to care about it. Twelve is the Doctor finally showing his age and everything that comes with it. He's grumpy and doesn't like people, and he's no longer putting up the facade of being the dashing young hero that he's kept up for so long

Eric will learn in time that it's not that 12 doesn't find Clara attractive anymore (he has eyes!), but that at this stage he's pretending he doesn't. He is aware of how much his last regeneration flirted with her. He told her last episode it was his mistake to act like her boyfriend. So 12 is very much making it a point to act the opposite. But imo that TOO is a mistake. And what I love about 12 and Clara as that as time goes on he drops both "acts" and learns that Clara is just Clara ("Clara, my Clara", "when do I not see you?") and their relationship needs no labels ("let's see what we are made of, you and I"), even if there IS attraction. (Which, to be clear, there *is*. Moffat: "It's been a while since I've seen the early stages of the 12th doctor trying to pretend he doesn't fancy Clara. 'Oh, you're ugly, disgusting, stop looking so good.'")
I'm glad they seem to like Danny. I might be in the minority ("might" because it's hard to tell if the majority is truly a majority or just a small loud group on the Internet), but I like Danny. I like his soldier past and how it shaped him as a person, and I like the conflict it creates with the Doctor. It allows for a lot of interesting character moments for both of them. One of my top scenes this season is Danny and the Doctor's confrontation in The Caretaker.
Excited for the next 2 episodes! 8x3 seems to not be very popular with fans (?) but I think it's hilarious and hello, Jenna Coleman in that gorgeous outfit? 10/10. And 8x4 is just brilliant. Can't wait.
edit: Great discussion on Twelve. The guys all understood very well that this Doctor is still trying to figure out who he is, and that the Doctor/Companion dynamic has shifted in important and new ways. ("She's my carer.") The comparisons to 10/11 are spot on.

In my opinion this has a lot of spoilers in it, but I will debate up to the episode they have seen.
12 and Clara's relationship is just forming.
The Doctor is not a middle school child who ignores Clara or throws rocks at her and hides.
This is the relationship of an eccentric Uncle and his Niece.
The Doctor has "duty of care" at this point and time and he realizes that he need Clara to help him figure out who he is.
This is a work of fiction and in that case we could both be right or we could both be wrong, that is the beauty of this.
"Doctor Who" builds it's own World and this may or may not be dealt with in future episodes, but only the 10th Doctor was "In Love" with a companion.

I don’t think he is pretending not to be interested, he’s just establishing (maybe clumsily) the new boundaries that come with the new relationship. Just because 12 loves Clara more than pretty much anything, doesn’t mean he’s sexually attracted to her.

@@editronvods Yeah, he brushed aside all of the inconsistencies in series 6 and how flat most of the episodes are in series 7. He seemed to focus on the production values and all of the "cool" concepts like time disintegrating and all the other stuff he's said he enjoys and found great about the Smith era. However, I don't think he bothered with how those concepts were actually implemented into the stories and that the execution left much to be desired a lot of the time.
Eric's the only one who actually criticised the writing in series 6 and 7 sometimes and pointed out that the writers seemed to throw a lot of stuff at the wall to see what stuck. Like he said, some of it did and some of it didn't. Of course, everyone's entitled to their opinions, but I've been baffled and a bit disappointed that the other guys (Shane and Calvin at least) thought the show was better during Matt's run than it was during the RTD era. The first five episodes of Season 8 leaked online in script and early black and white workprint stage. They had temp music, unfinished effects, and differences from the final episode.
This episode originally ended with Dalek Rusty going to the Dalek ship and blowing himself up. In the finished episode, he not only doesn't kill himself (suicide bombing essentially) but there is an ADR line while Capaldi has his back turned saying, "Till the next time" to emphasize Dalek Rusty would be fine.
Next week's episode has one of the most jarring changes, made a week before the aired episode due to real life events, but one that leaves in dialogue to the deleted scene in the final episode...

Yeah, this is something i've noticed before. The Ninth Doctor was fresh from the Time War, and believed he had killed two races at once. All that anger and hatred against the daleks was on the surface for the Metaltron to see. Here with Twelve, he no longer has the survivor's guilt of his previous incarnations, and has self-doubt. Not to mention someone looked inside his heart and saw hatred, which upsets him.

This doctor is the first that remembers that he didn't kill his people. The other doctors knew that they were not good people because of the what happened, but they still acted like they were because they wanted to be good. So now the 12th remembers that he didn't kill everything so the thing that the other doctors used to base their character off of is now gone. But the doctor has done some bad thing before, during, and after the time war but he has also done great thing so now the 12th is confused and questioning if he is a good or bad person.
The doctor believed that he has killed his own people for more than 1000 years and now that he didn't he is trying to get back to the man he used to be but he can't remember who that was.

Jenna Coleman really needs to work on her "pretend this empty cup prop is full of hot liquid" method. The mug of "tea" she brought into the Tardis and airplane in "Bells of Saint John" should have gone flying all over the floor within seconds of the scene starting, but she was still trying to sip from it at the end. Similarly, the coffee cups here look way too light to have anything in them. This is one of those things that once you've noticed it, you can never unnotice it.

Last epiosde when Vastra said the doctor wears a face to be accepted, I think it's also true for his personality. If you think about it the first person the 11th doctor meet was a little girl in the middle of the night, so of course he's going to act as unthreatening as he can and be silly to make her laugh and let her gaurd down to be comfortable with him. The first person 10 meet was Rose, the girl he has a thing for and she was in trouble, so going back to the 50th clara calls the 10th a hero. I think the 12th doctor doesn't really care enough to be accepted because he doesn't know who he is to begin with, and that's why in the last episode he seemed so vaulnerable with clara because he is finally showing her who he is and he doesn't want her to reject him.
If you look at the classic who doctors they don't have such drastic personality changes between regenerations because the doctor knows who he is and he didn't feel the need to be accepted the way new who doctors do because he has his own people where as the new doctors are all alone all they have is their companion.

The Doctor has never been particularly fond of soldiering or military discipline, but disliking soldiers themselves just because they're soldiers (even when Blue, in this episode, did the opposite of what a soldier would have done, according to the Doctor's own definition, by not blowing the Dalek up like her mission told her to), just seems so petty and silly.

The Indoor Kites I think 11 will always be Shane’s favourite but I can see Capaldi becoming Eric’s favourite.

I really don't like Danny Pink. He had no chemistry with Clara and was just forced into the show. They fight all the time and then suddenly she loves him more than anything and is willing to ruin her relationship with the doctor for Danny. I like Clara because her character and her chemistry with the doctor but it really felt like the writers didn't know what to do with her story.

Thank you for saying the doctor almost seemed "damaged". My initial reaction to 12 was that he felt "broken". I eventually came around to him, but the first few episodes were rough.
