You are beautiful Carly inside and out ❤ I loved how you said that you are a full-time artist with 2 side gigs (one of them is actually artistic). I have a similar experience but I keep reminding myself to have faith and keep learning and painting 🙂
Thank you so much Elaf!! That means so much to me!! ❤We always have to keep the faith and keep learning and painting everyday. At least we get the opportunity to create while still having those other jobs to pay the bills.
Thank you for sharing this part of your journey ! It’s very difficult for many artists. You are not alone, sometimes I tell myself-as an artist -that I don’t want to make a living from my art but at least make it alive and that’s already what you do ! Money will come !
❤ there is so much strength in vulnerability. Thank you for being so raw and honest about your journey thus far. You’re right, failure can be inevitable. However, I love how positive you are about it! ❤
Thanks, bestie! ❤️ It’s so hard to be vulnerable, but it also felt so good to share this part of my journey. I’m definitely trying to stay positive so that I can keep going no matter how hard it gets!
Want to say a big big thank you! I feel you! Thanks for sharing the truth! I think in most cases it is really hard to make it as an artist. As we see mostly only success or rather what people want us to see. And in reality it is really hard. You are a great artist. Keep going. Keep pushing.
I’m so glad you can relate!! It’s been a difficult journey, but it’s one that I’m grateful to be on! Thank you for the encouragement!! It means a lot to me! ❤️
Thank you so much for posting this. I am just starting out as an artist and plan to share the processes through social media as I start learning the skills, and building my business as well. Its so helpful to me to hear the struggle side as well! Thank you for sharing.
Hey, I'm so glad you liked the video! I like to make sure that people understand the struggle as well as the successes of what it's like to try to create your own art business. I wish you luck on your journey!
I feel like your doing everything right. You’re artwork is stunning! and you’re putting yourself out there. I just think it just will take time to find your audience. I know what it’s like to feel like a failure though as Ana artist. I had a shop with prints, keychains and stickers etc. and I had so much unsold inventory I hated looking at it cause it just reminded me of how I wasn’t doing a good job at all. It was effecting me mentally. It kinda sucked the fun out of creating for a while. I decided to pivot into something else like art licensing because I was losing more money than I was making. Have you thought of getting into art licensing? I feel like your art would be perfect for that. You basically rent your art to retailers like target, and they give you royalties for every product they sell with your work on it. I’m still figuring out how to do it myself but maybe that could be something you could do well in and help get your name out there more. Wishing you all the success in your art journey. Keep going!
Thank you so much for your encouragement! It means a lot to me! ❤️ I'm glad you can relate to having lots of unsold inventory. I have thought about doing art licensing, but I still don't know much about it. Let me know if you've had any luck with it so far!
I think the economy is slow right now. The first thing to go is anything extra for people's budget. Unfortunately art is extra for most people. We know a lot of local business people, food industry etc starting to slow. This will pass.
Carly, you always say what truly needs to be addressed. You’re authentic and that’s so brave. You’re changing the world with your art and your journey! I can relate so so much to what you say❤ I’m in a pivotal season of my life where having the time and energy to create is something I need to work at and be cognizant of. It’s all a journey 🙏🏼
Thank you so much!! You saying that means the world to me. I really do my best to be authentic and share my real journey towards becoming a full-time artist, and I'm SO glad you can relate. We really are on a journey, and it feels good to embrace that these things take time. ❤️
Carli you are an amazing artist..It’s part of the journey, keep painting what you feel.. it’s the story behind the painting of your art what it means to you & your collectors will connect to you on that level or thru their own emotional journey.❤ Continue being amazing!😎
Your paintings are skillful and very well done but as an *ahem* older person might I suggest a more neutral, toned down palette? I think people in my age range really consider surrounding decor a lot when buying
I've heard this critique a few times now, and I totally agree! I'm working on finding the balance between creating what I love and creating what will look great in people's homes.
Yes. I agree with more neutrals and toned down the palette. Finding balance between what you love and what sales is your answer (Or everybody's answer). You are a great artist.
being an artist in this day and age is HARD!!! Everything is so much work, from the business side, to trying to sell,to trying to market, going to markets, networking, and creating and then you also have if possible a life full of other things. hard to juggle everything!
Wow... Thank you so much for posting this video. I have watched an abundant amount of art videos and I've never came across one of an artist talking about major struggles while they are going through them. Most artist don't talk about the major struggles until long after they have figured out the solutions or gained a following. I've been a subscriber for a while, and I love your videos. If anything, definitely continue making art, but if you enjoy TH-cam focus on the video making and TH-cam side of creating, because I love watching your videos! I'm always surprised when I see you don't have 50K+ subs! If you continue making videos, I have NO doubt your YT channel will grow!!
I’m so glad you can relate! It did feel pretty scary and vulnerable sharing this part of my journey while I’m going through it, but I think it’s so important to talk about it. Because most of the time, artists just show how they’re already a full-time artist and not the hard journey it took to get there. I’m definitely going to focus a lot of energy on TH-cam because I love making videos. Thank you for subscribing and believing in my journey! It means so much to me!! ❤️
I just wanted to pop on here and let you know that I took a look at your website and on the mobile version, on the home page, your picture was covering the words about you. Not sure if this is on other mobile versions but you might want to reposition that picture. The rest of the site looked really good :)
I’m joining the mastery program December. And this is 1 of the things I worry about. Even my own business ( lashing ) is getting slow. I hope I’m not making a mistake
don't call "not selling" failure. Those paintings you moved out are beautiful! Would love to see what you have been doing since this video. I'm keeping an eye on your channel. I have been an artist for over 30 years now. I've just finished the 100--painting challenge. Trying to get out of a rut with my work...
Thanks for your encouragement! I definitely felt like a failure for not having sold much of my work, but I've changed my mindset around that these days. I'll be posting more updates on my channel soon. I hope you've been able to get out of the rut with your artwork! I know how much it sucks to feel stuck, but there's always more inspiration once you find your way past that rut.
Well, there's always basement and closet sales. I don' t want to accidentally promote anyone (ever since I got my message deleted when I mentioned a specific brand for another artist who had a tech question 😵💫🙄) but if you search art basement sale or art closet sale, you get two things. 1) The concept, which is in a nutshell to create a sale page for things you are clearing out of your spaces and then run a promotion using your dedicated channels of communication. In this promotion (often a recorded live event so you can post after and non-attendees can still be sent a link etc.) you discuss your pieces and how you connect to them, what they evoke etc. This in turn connects your participants to your pieces, which is a great thing. And, 2) It really shows you how everyone, no matter how seemingly successful, has that same pile of things that for one reason or another didn't move. And they're usually amazing things! It helps you understand that indeed, it is something that can happen to anyone, but is absolutely not a showstopper or a reason to be critical of yourself or your creations. I hope that information is beneficial to you.
You already know it, and people are all telling you, but as a business coach for years know that this is part of the process. Running your own business in ANY industry is so hard and it takes time and patience. I know it's easy to hear those thoughts and feel like it won't happen, but it will. The only thing standing between you and where you want to be is time, and if you can accept time, you're good ❤️🙏
Yes, I totally agree! I've had to broaden my time horizon a LOT, and I've been leaning into patience much more lately. Thank you for the encouragement!! 💕
Hey Carly you mentioned in another (earlier) video that you make a little less than $1K a month from your art (did I remember that correctly?) - how are you able to do that if your paintings are only selling here and there? Idk if I misunderstood. Best of luck to you on your art journey!
Hey, I generally can make money from selling a few paintings per month along with a few prints and stickers. I also manage to sell a commission here and there as well. I average from $200 per month to $1000. I hope that clears things up!
I don’t think “failure” is the right word. There’s a learning curve and an investment of hard work and emotion to be successful in any personal business. Especially in the creative fields. If it were easy, it wouldn’t be special or as admired. You’re well on your way!
Looks like you’ve sold a lot! Maybe your first price point was just too high. I’ve experienced the same thing. Sell at lower and then lift it up. I don’t know what I am talking about, but love your heart and your art! 🎉
Hiya!! Your stuff's really good!! Are you pitching to the right potential audience? As someone who grew up in the 1970s, I think some of your originals, and maybe posterized prints of them, would probably do pretty well with die-hard Pam Grier/"Foxy Brown"/"Cleopatra Jones"/"Get Christie Love" fans. I think that's where I would look next. As always, my humble two cents' worth comes with the usual disclaimers.
Thank you!! I'll have to look into making some poster-sized prints! I've never done that before. And yes, I'm trying to figure out my best ideal audience, but it's a lot of trial and error haha
The paintings may be lovely. But the theme and style has been done- Alot in the US. Your skill has grown by leaps and bounds. Try selling them overseas. Or Start experimenting. What do you have to say? What matters to you? Think in terms of symbols. You can't use women and animals..what's next? You may need to visit what you don't want to face. Put it on the page. Layer over it. Look into Jessica Serran. She has a 3-5 day free challenge that has you breaking through emotional blocks. Good luck
Unsolicited advice. Read the book Daily Painting, and start doing A LOT of work fast and small. It'll level up your skills and paintings way faster, and you'll save a lot of mony on materials! Also, keep studying for the rest of your career.
Hiiii Friend, there’s no such thing as failure when you’re chasing your dreams. You should change your perspective from failure to “findings”. You’re on a journey, not a race. You’ll get there faster knowing you’re on a treasure hunt looking for a new finding & not a failure. That word is a limiting belief that will enable you to believe you’re not making progress.
Everybody can try to make you feel better but that’s not paying your bills or giving you vacation they just saying it takes time how much time time is running 🏃 out nobody is gonna pay for all the loses you took so I understand as an artist I’m not gonna sugar cos like everyone else that’s painful and hurts I agree with you when you say failure 😞 cause that’s what you have to admit to make yourself stronger from life mistakes but I’m cheering for you but just not giving ma give you false advice only facts
there is no such thing as failing as an artist, as long as your are letting yourself be creative ❤❤❤
You're totally right! ❤❤❤ Thank you!
