    I just returned from a trip to Andalusia and so I was sniffing around the whisky section of the airport to take something with me. I saw the Macallan stuff but wasn't interested. A glance at the Terra label does nothing to convince me to blow £200. I picked up a bottle of Ardbeg Corryvreckan (57%) for £50 and a 1 litre bottle of Loch Lomond 12 (The Open - 46%), as recommended by Roy, for about £35. Chuck in a freebie reduction ticket and I had both for £79. Neither whisky blew my mind but they're pretty good and I was happy with the spend. I don't doubt that I would enjoy this Macallan but why on earth would I pay that kind of money for it when I have choices like the ones I opted for less than half the price? The colour of the Terra tells me that there's young stuff in it and/or the casks are virtually inactive, especially if it's the kind of age you suggest Rob. If the average age was old as you think it would have an age statement. It's been unceremoniously dumped into Travel Retail for a reason. It's all about the brand.

      You may be right WT. I enjoyed it. Definitely better than the trash they come out with regularly. Colour means nothing to me. Have you seen the new 18 year olds? It could be younger but drinks older so there’s that. Going to stick with a 15/16 year average age. Hold it next to the new 18 double oak and I’ll be floored if there’s a difference in colour at all.

      I hope you know by now I would never defend this horribly run company unless I actually enjoyed something from them.

      @@WhiskyInThe6 Just have to add something here Rob, with all due respect. We all love natural colour because it tells us a lot about the whisky. The combination of age and colour tells us a lot about the quality of cask and its previous contents. This particular expression tells me two things. It's either young stuff in active casks or older stuff in tired casks or a mashup of the two. I don't think Macallan were happy and that's why they're trying to flog it on in Travel Retail.

    Love the new setup!

    Rob seems to still be in classroom teaching mode in this review; voice elevated, lots of numbers and information forward. I feel like solving for Y on those ABV numbers 😄. Awesome informative review as always! Definitely gonna try to have someone do me solid if they travel out and snag this one.

    Hi Rob. Good stuff indeed. I bought a bottle from their website, also I think it is available outside the travel retail market now, because of the pandemic situation. Cheers!

      Ah interesting. I’ll probably bite on the Enigma after trying this.

    Great review, Rob, as always. I’ve never seen it. I used to be a Big Mac head so anything new always gets my attention. Sounds delicious but I’d have to have the extra $ for something like the Terra. Cheers! 🥃😊

    I’ve still yet to have a good experience with any travel retail exclusive whiskies. But to be fair, I have only tried maybe a dozen

    Very fair review Rob! I was gifted Macallan Quest which doesn’t thrill me. I think we all give Macallan a point or two more than it really deserves. At 200 per bottle I would have to pass. Tough to pay that for any no age statement also under 46%. Eventually reputation alone will catch up to lower APV, no age statements and chill filtering. While there are really no “bad” Macallan’s , they are becoming not great enough for the money they are asking. (Just an old Yanks opinion!) Neal

    Hey Rob, my wife got me a bottle of Terra at.the Phoenix airport back in 2019. Cost was $165 US then, now has increased to $180. Part of the Quest collection exclusive to travel retail. Series is similar to the 1824 Series. Terra is like the former Sienna release. Made with 1st fill European and American oak casks. The top of the line in the series is the Enigma matured in 100% 1st fill European oak like the Ruby from the 1824 Series. Btw, the price at Pearson back in 2019 was over $250 CAD. Looks like they took their price ques from the LCBO.

      Lol maybe. Curious about the enigma.

    • @welshtoro3256
      @welshtoro3256 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think so Robert. If it had the same credentials as the Sienna it would be a core release. The colour gives the game away and what kind of sherry was in those casks? Younger and/or well used casks and that's why Macallan don't have the courage to release it as a core expression. Travel Retail is a graveyard of unsuccessful experimentation.
