"I'm straighter than that" in response to a line-out where the ball didn't travel down the middle between the two teams as it should, is a legendary line, as Nigel is gay. Makes all of us Welsh very proud, does Nigel. 5:45 - Sliding on astroturf may hurt but we'll never know as all Rugby pitches are real grass, grown and maintained by groundskeepers. In the rain and Winter they can become mudbaths but that's all part of the fun in Rugby!

Nigel is the best eveer. He suffered with low self esteem and was conflicted about his sexuality. it lead to him becoming very depressed and when he got wind that a news paper were going to run a story. He took a shot gun out to the fields and came close to killing himself but i believe was stopped in time by his father. He told the governing rugby board of Wales that he was gay and was going to withdraw from the game. They said 'No you're not' and collectively surrounded him with support and respect. managers, players and official all said, we don't care a toss about your sexuality you're a good man and the best in the game. Since then other players have come out as gay and nobody cared. It took until this year for a young football player to come out as gay. Two very different worlds.

He doesn’t just say “that’s my decision and you have to accept it”, he says “that’s my decision, this is why, and you have to accept it”. Retired too soon. Legend, look at how the players respect him, he tells them off like naughty school boys and these big burly guys take it. That don’t happen unless there is respect, and he earned that respect because of how he refs the game, completely fair and down the middle. @@samuelpinder1215 I watch and play both sports, and in football players constantly try to influence the referee and in some cases it works, if all players had respect for the referee then they would not do that and therefore they would respect the ref to call the game down the middle but when footballers start crowding the referee or rolling around on the floor like they have been shot by a sniper from row z or blatantly dive because another player had the audacity to try and win the ball to try to influence a ref to call a foul it shows the lack of respect in the sport, see it week in week out in football when playing it or watching on tv. A couple things you may have missed:
2:00 "I'm straighter than that one". He's gay... so..
10:39 "Dive that like that and come back here in two weeks and play". There was a football match being hosted at the stadium in a couple of weeks, Nigel was insinuating that he had dived (simulated a foul) like in football.
11:24 - The colour of the cards: it's similar to football in that a red is you're thrown from the game, and the yellow is a "warning", but the yellow carries more weight in rugby due to the "sin bin": essentially, if you get a yellow card then you have to leave the field for 10 minutes. That's why he says things like "do that again and someone's going to go for 10 minutes".

We're taught to respect the ref as one of the basics of rugby. He's not wrong comparing it to football as an opposite. There you see zero respect for refs, and the diving and antics the players get up to is pathetic. Football refs could easily get hold of the game like this but they don't.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A quick fix for the bitching and shouting at the ref would be for football to do what happens in rugby - if a penalty (or in football a free kick) is awarded but the side keeps arguing the ref marches forwards 10 yards. If they keep arguing its another 10 yards.
In football the referees would not need to do that too often to shut the drama queens up.

We LOVE our Nigel Owens. A Welsh national treasure. He is my sporting hero.
He is the only person in the UK who is allowed to called Football "Soccer'. There have been signs in rugby matches with his comment, 'This is not soccer!'. For USA, it means you DO NOT argue with the referee... EVER! Shut your mouth and get on with the game. If you don't like it, switch to football, and play at the football stadium 500 metres away
3:58 13:16 In some matches, he has a live camera (think GoPro) attached to his chest, which can be transmitted live on TV. Think a live camera on an F1 car; that's what he's got on his chest.
11:26 Yellow is a 10 minute sin-bin; they get off the pitch, like ice hockey penalty box. A red is sent off for the rest of the match.

11:32 Yellow means the player goes off for 10 minutes. Red mean the player goes off for the rest of the game. However, World Rugby is currently trialling a new rule, where a red card instead mean the player goes off for 20 minutes. The idea is that this avoids a team having to play a significant portion of the game with less players than their opposition.

  • @speleokeir

In rugby the ref is God. What he says goes. If a ref thinks a player is being disrespectful he can also punish him in several ways:
    i) Moving the offending team 10 meters back.
ii) Reversing a penalty so it's given to the opposition.
    iii) Carding a player.
A yellow card means a player is sent to the sin bin for 10 mins. A red card means he's sent off for the remainder of the game. He may miss further games too depending on the offense.
This keeps the players respectful and stops them arguing the toss about every decision. Your team won't be happy if they're penalised because you can't shut your mouth.
Normally only the team captains can speak to the ref regarding decisions, although the ref will often pick out any player involved in an incident to talk to along with his captain. This stops the ref from being surrounded and intimidated by a crowd of angry players as happens in football.
Traditionally a lot of rugby refs started off as PE teachers at public* schools which tend to have strict discipline. A lot of players also attended public school. Consequently a lot of rugby refs talk to players as if they are naughty school boys!😄
*Public schools are in fact expensive, fee paying, private schools, as opposed to State schools which are free and attended by the majority of children. The oldest public School is Rugby School in the town of rugby. Three guesses which school invented the sport.😀

Fantastic ref and well respected. The 01:56 comment, he's an openly gay ref. 10:38 - come back in two weeks was a reference to the Scotland football team playing at the same ground in two weeks. As for the card system - a yellow means 10 mins for the player in the "sin bin", red is off.

The differences between Soccer and Rugby
Soccer player catches his fingernail: rolls around on the floor in agony
Rugby player gets half his face ripped off: "'tis a scratch" and carries on

  • @jazzx251
    @jazzx251 2 ปีที่แล้ว

yellow is a "warning" - but also means a hockey-style sin bin of 10 minutes ... your team plays 10 minutes a man down
red is the same as soccer - your guy is removed forever from the field, and you must fight on with a man less
A straight red is usually reserved for any deliberate head-inducing fouls - such as grabbing your opponent in mid-air, and smashing them head-first into the ground.
Or - deliberately stamping somebody on the head
Or - grabbing somebody around the neck, and dragging them onto the ground
Or - stamping on somebody's spine when they're on the ground
    etc.

The great Welsh Nigel Owens. He’s a hero in Wales and was the first referee to come out. He’s the pinnacle of referring in rugby. He’d have been an amazing teacher. You kind of need to understand rugby to get him at his best.
I’m straighter than that one 😂 best NO quote

In rugby a yellow card means the offending player is sin binned and has to sit on the side lines for 10mins. when that time has passed he can come back onto the field. Whilst sin binned you cannot be replaced so your team will be a player down for 10 mins. A red card is when the offending player get sent off for the rest of the game and the player cannot be replaced.
