Thank you, great choices, I have almost all of them. I'd have found room for the first Wire LP, Pink Flag (a must have, they pretty much own the Art Punk tag, and REM covered Strange on their Document LP), Crossing The Red Sea by The Adverts (check Bombsite Boy, On The Roof, and their mission statement, One Chord Wonders), and Australia's The Saints, their first LP Stranded is unbeatable (plus, they arguably pre-date The Ramones, same vibe but other end of the planet).
Good list mate, may I suggest you listen to 'In The City' by The Jam and either 'No More Heros' or 'Rattus Norvegicus' by The Stranglers. I think you would like them. Keep up the good work.
Quite scary that I have around 14-15 of those albums. I'm surprised you never selected the debut albums by either The Undertones, Crass or The Jam. Those three bands inspired many other kids to start their own groups.
The world's first true punk band, The Missing Links (1965) from Australia, sporting Ramones length hair, and they were wild and destructive on stage. The last track on their debut LP is completely backwards, predating the Beatles. Titles like Mama Shut Your Big Mouth, Bald Headed woman, You're Drivin Me Insane, Some Kinda Fun.
Lupco Kotevski. Totally agree. You may enjoy this video that I made on the history guitar of distortion and feedback in which I acknowledge their influence on a world scale. I even feature an interview I conducted with the great Andy Anderson. th-cam.com/video/MVBp0uBGTPA/w-d-xo.html
Late to the dance here, and some great choices. That being said, one of my all time favorite punk bands that I got to see was 999. Their first album was awesome that included one of my favorite album covers.
Nice monologue showcasing some brilliant albums. Love the enthusiasm, and the first-hand experience. Thanks for doing it. I've done my own top 10, plus an update on my channel.
Man I dug both your and Richies 20 Best Punk vids!! But I was super stoked to see that 3 out of the 5 that I chose on my entry were on your list so I somehow feel validated Haha! Great stuff I always see stuff I wanna get when I watch your videos and that’s the coolest! Peace ☮️ We love you too Mazzy!
Hi Mazzy just started watching your videos a week or so ago , I am hooked on them and want to tell you how exciting it is to hear your stories about your life and your passion for music it's a breath of fresh air in a difficult time for many at the moment keep them coming and stay safe and healthy from the Scottish Highlands 🏴 SAOR ALBA
I was in that same SF scene back in the day! It was amazing. 14 years old, I snuck into the Mab to see Devo. Also DKs, TSOL and Black Flag. Later on I ended up working in the art department at Bill Graham Presents, and (referring to your Top 10 Wankers list I just watched) - everyone at BGP used to roll their eyes whenever The Eagles held **yet another** of their "absolute last tour, never touring again, this time we mean it" tours. Anyway, I love your channel - these are my jams! I'd add Gary Numan & The Tubeway Army, which was New Wave, yes, but punk in its own way. For more recent punk, I really love NOFX, and a band from Canada called PUP - could you maybe do a "current/more recent" punk list sometime? Subscribed; love the channel!
Loved your list my friend. I'm not too familiar with some of the American bands. Back in the day we didn't consider any American bands punk, not even The Ramones. Quite ironic when you look at my top 5 now The Stooges - The Stooges New York Dolls - New York Dolls The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F. Stiff Little Fingers - Nobody's Heroes The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegivus
Nice choices … all in my collection … I would include in my list Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade and Minutemen - Double Nickels … / USA and from the UK Stranglers 1st , Wire - Pink Flag and ANYTHING BY THE FALL … cheers, Juergen
I agree with most of your choices, but how about "The Stooges" (I wanna Be Your Dog), The Heartbreakers/ Johnny Thunders (LAMF),N.Y. Dolls,Lou Reed/Velvet Underground. I guess there will always be more to add,and I agree with you,It's all about the attitude. I was lucky enough to see and hear many of the N.Y. based groups at CBGB's, and Max's Kansas City.I still have ringing in my ears from The Ramones ! Patti Smith is also my #1, I just adore her ! Great video, and list ! Cindy
Punk was a scene (well, two scenes) as much as a sound and an image. That's why Blondie makes the cut even though nothing they recorded sounds punk at all. The Stooges and Velvet Underground were too long before that scene, so they are influences. The Dolls were more of a hard-edged glam to my ear. McLaren tried to remake them into a punk band before he glommed onto the Pistols and it didn't work out too well.
The Ruts, Wire's Pink Flag, The Vibrators first album, the Radiators from Space's first record TV Tube Heart: your list is a little US-lobsided. Thanks for posting. The covers of those records look mint. Amazing.
I saw the Pistol's in a pub in North London. They were dreadful. Also on the Anarchy in th UK Tour, Equally poor, The Clash on the other hand were really tight, so were The Damned. It's a myth that punks couldn't play their instruments. Most of them could.
Nothing against your open definition of what « punk » means - so I would add other LPs from my personal soundtrack of these years : « the Scream » by Siouxsie & the Banshees, « Prehistoric sounds » by the Saints (the most underrated punk band), « Pink Flag » by Wire (main influence for the hardcore scene), « 1st issue » by PIL (John Lydon’s second punk invention), « Rattus Norvegicus » by the Stranglers… and Pere Ubu’s « the Modern Dance »
My fave Ramones is Ramones Leave Home. The songs are just non stop catchy with that blitz beat. Black Flag and DK's back to back. Bravo! I have played and recorded with guys from both bands and they were solid. Chuck Dukowski is a man! Nice and Friendly is his motto. Good guy and good player. I was with several notable HC bands in SF/ San Jose (SAN HO!) early 80s and some later years too. Great video! Thanks.
Good choice of shirts as Generation X covers Gimme Some Truth on their debut. Interesting Buzzcocks pick with side 2 being very " Post Punk " with Money & Hollow Inside & the closer I Believe with the great close " There Is No Love In This World Anymore ! " The atmospherics on Unknown Pleasures are incredible. Much credit due to Martin Hannet. Los Angeles by X is so amazing with Ray Manzerek not just acknowledging but fully participating. What a way to start the eighties.
Way to go Great Strong choices on your Punk Pix . I Fortunately have all that you have mentioned, all Fabulous ! I was 15 and i automatically gravitated to those early days of Punk. It runs in my blood to this day. Thanx for the entertainment👍😎
1975 Patti Smith Group Horses. Iconic cover photo. Kicks off with Gloria. Pretty much 3 chords sounding good. Just love the way she transitions from horses into land of thousand dances. Yes I think #1 punk album too. Its your list but I'd move that train wreck Sex Pistols up a notch or two.
dylan's version of 'idiot wind' on hard rain is blistering...great honorable mention....patti smith is glorious...cbgb's lives...peace always my friend...rocky
The most sublime 'punk' album ever, Laura Nyro's very intense "New York Tendaberry" (1969) which throws traditional songwriting norms out the window and has some wild vocals, and covers themes including love, loss, desperation, death, infidelity, revenge, abortion, drugs, prostitution, murder, poverty, etc - basically the human condition, and its just beautiful (Nyro's track 'Captain for Dark Mornings' is one of Joni Mitchell's top ten track ever). There's even a real gunshot on 'Mercy on Broadway'. Nyro is one of Exene Cervenka's favourite songwriters, and Nyro is a big influence on Patti Smith, as well as scores of others - see her wiki page for an idea of her seismic influence. Sara Bareilles at Nyro's 2012 induction into the Rock Hall of Fame described Nyro as "punk to the core" because she was a total maverick. For me Tendaberry is the artistic highpoint of contemporary songwriting in the truest sense - innovative, risk-taking, challenging, emotional, authentic, beautiful, meaningful...
Yes sir. I bought Dylan's album hard rain at a yard sale when I was in high school and I did not get it at all. It didn't stick around in my teenage record collection very long but now I get it.
Hey Mazzy ...man after skipping over 5 adds that popped up during your video I was able to finish your list. What a collection !! I have to say tho the Sex Pistols LP you have there is so bad ass !! A OG UK plus you say you have all the singles killer !! Plus you seen them man I would love to hear some of your stories as I think that album would be my fav punk record. All great bands you showed and so many I do not have . Thanks for showing them , cheers !!-VK
The Slits! My good man you have a new subscriber. Yes indeed - the Slits, this album especially is a melting pot of British punk and reggae. Just an amazing sound. Ari Up was about 15 when The Slits started and Viv Albertine who played guitar was Mick Jones on/off girlfriend way back… who were another band who mixed the genres. I still listen to both bands and prefer London Calling of all The Clash LPs!
Great video ! not all punk but punk related. I got most of these, I think I have them all except Richard Hell. Vinyl Richie drives me crazy, he has a lot of obscure punk records that are very good, but he got them when he was young, so those are impossible to get now or way too expensive.
Great list! I saw 14 of those 20 bands live in concert. No post-1980 albums though. I’d add Bad Religion “No Control” and Rancid “And Out Come The Wolves”, personally
You were at Winterland for The Sex Pistols?! So was I. I was onstage with my brother, their bodyguard, Noel Monk, their manager, and some guy named Bill Graham. I’m glad you say they sucked and it wasn’t just me.
A little late to the party, but it is my contention that 1977 was one of the best years for rock and roll. It was the year that "Punk" exploded. And there is a reason for this. Andy Partridge of XTC, said, in 1977 all of the labels were trying to capitalize on this new, "Punk" thing. However, they couldn't quite put their finger on what this , "Punk" thing actually was. So they were signing anyone that sounded different. We probably wouldn't have been signed in any other year than 1977. Other debuts in 1977 were, of course, XTC, Wire, The Jam, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Iggy Pop (Debut Solo), Radio Birdman, Cheap Trick, Ultravox, The Stranglers, The Saints . a few of the top 20 you gave were 1977 debut albums. Just an amazing year.
Ah, Mazzy. Wish I could've done a dual on this one with you as a split-screen. You may have just spurred me on to do my own response vid. Great picks. Did you ever meet Biafra? He's an interesting dude. LOVE the Damned and the Buzzcocks. So rad that you've seen all those bands. Incredible! Patti Smith 'Horses' is such a beautiful album cover. Gorgeous. Cheers, amigo. Punk AF!
Great albums Mazzy! And I like your thoughts about Punk being more of an attitude, a spirit, and not a genre! Rock and roll is rock and roll and that's it! Punk is rock n roll! Glad to see the Ramones on there. They're my favorites! Cheers Matt Street
Enjoyed the video my friend! I've heard the name Richard hell since I was in high school but I've never listened to any of his music maybe I should change that. Peace
I love your videos despite the incessant Beatles and politics talk. Just shows how fun your videos are. But two Yoko references in a Top 20 punk album video? Com’on Man!
Hard Rain is one of my favourite Dylan albums. His voice is powerful on the album (especially 'You're a Big Girl Now'. ) But punk? I agree with Cindy further down the comments on honourable mentions going to The Stooges and New York Dolls. From a UK perspective Sex Pistols higher and Clash No.1.
In my top 3 punk albums - The Saints' I'm Stranded. Maybe they didn't register much in SF at the time - they were pretty important in England in 77 although probably outsiders there too. The Saints were as important to punk as any other band, including the Ramones. They were doing the same thing as the Ramones in Brisbane, QL in 1974 completely outside of any contemporary influence. Of course, the Sonics, the MC5 and the Stooges must have influenced them as did 60s ozzie garage bands like the Missing Links. I'm Stranded deserves to be in any top 20 punk ranking. No criticism on you, that said and I agree with your choices including the Plastic Ono Band and Hard Rain...
Nice list but living in New York in 1976 to 1980 I have a different view. From Britain you missed the great band and first LP by Wire , Pink Flag. Check it out it kicks ass. I also thought that The Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders were the best band in NY when they were not high. Their LAMF was pure punk. Lastly Modern Dance by Pere Ubu was groundbreaking. Thanks for all your videos.
This is really the choice of an America fan . Nothing wrong with that but my choices would be different . You did pick some excellent albums but many of your chosen albums seemed more new wave than punk . Though the definition of punk is subjective. I have nearly all your albums in my collection
No Souixsie? No Dickies? yer list needs to go to 22 haI I would def have Tinderbox and Dawn Of The Dickies in thar somewhere, but thats me. Fun list tho
I'm glad you had marquee Moon on your list because I was going to have to stab my monitor (and then shoplift a new one) if you didn't. I love Devo, the B-52s, Gang of Four, and Joy Division but I wouldn't call any of them punk, more postpunk (or new wave for the first two). Not because they could play their instruments - I agree with you there - but because the soundscapes and moods they created were very different from anything I'd call punk. Joy Division were punk when they started but quickly moved to something else. Obviously any lines you draw are arbitrary. I saw the DKs on the National Mall in 1983 and it was dark by the time they went on, so of course Jello kept going on about "the Great Klanthman in the Thky" which was the Washington Monument with its two little red eyes looming behind the crowd. It was hilarious. I had just gotten back to the Mall after riding to the hospital with my friend who decided stage diving wasn't punk enough so he climbed the speaker column and jumped from there, which, given that I've already said ended in a trip to the hospital, went about as well as you'd probably expect. But it was punk AF.
^ ^ All undoubtedly very " punk"and I,m glad you included The Slits but what about The Ruts, Generation X The Saints , The Dead boys and the Doctors of madness??? Extremely "punk" Foxy pagan love fae Scotland VVxx
Dude you're killing me......lol..... I know everyone has their own opinion but IMO you have SIX bands on your top 20 that are not punk! Television, B 52's, Blondie, Talking Heads, Patti Smith and Joy Division...I could name 30 punk bands that should be on this list with their best album, but off the top of my head---GBH, The Undertones, The Saints, Stiff Little Fingers, Leatherface, The Ruts, Generation X, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Cockney Rejects, That said, I totally respect everyone's opinion.
Yeah you are one of many who have mentioned this but to me punk is a concept and period of time when I was listening to all these bands, many during the first punk era from 76-82 or so. One could also say the punk bands you’re thinking of are simply more aggressive garage bands 🤷🏻♂️😎
@@mazzysmusic You have a different idea of what is punk, wiich is fine. My feelings on the subject are more traditional I guess, If you;ve never heard The Ruts (which you probably have) I would recommend The Crack. And if you've never heard Leatherface (as many haven't) please listen to Mush. IMO they are the best punk band of the last 30 years. Broke up around 2012, started in 1990.
In my humble opinion, Punk lost something when it became codified to a specific sound and a specific style. Those rules didn’t exist when bands like Television, the Ramones, Dead Boys and Blondie were growing the CBGB’s punk scene from the seeds planted by the Dolls, the Stooges, the Sonics and the MC5.
@@unkindestcut My list of the top 15 punk albums has one from 1991 so I guess I disagree with you. I never felt any codified sound with the very good bands. If you care you can find it by googling willie luncheonette top 15 punk albums.
@@willieluncheonette5843 Don't get me wrong, some very good punk albums, even great, punk albums since the 70s all the way up to today. And I completely agree with you, the best punk bands don't adhere to any artificial restrictions and rules.
@@davidellis5141 you are talking about Gen X or Undertones? Gen X I think......Yes, but IMO the Brit version has the better songs and is how the band intended it. Listen is a monster.
I recognized each one by the covers alone before you spoke. I'm old. Saw several of them, too. Damn what a great time that was. I can't remember the last time I got excited about a new album or band. You ever do Industrial countdowns?
With all due respect, and I do respect you immensely, Mazzy; but any of Iggy and the Stooges 3 studio albums eviscerate any and all records you just held up, with regard to this genre. Of course this would assume that punk was conceived a few years prior to 1977. Perhaps it was. I believe it was.
Sex Pistols were "assholes"Thats what punk was about.Punk wasnt just about the attitude but fashion and people stopped wearing flares unlike the ramones.Noone called any band punk until a british music tabloid mentioned the Sex Pistols.Weird collection there mate.Whats Bob Dylan doing there?Next your saying Nick Drake was punk.Never mind the Bollocks best album of all imo across all music.ramones near the top,Patti smith. You having a laugh? I would have included Cockney Rejects, UK subs,Exploited
replace talking heads with minor threat...replace sleater kinney with refused...replace gang of four with dead boys...replace blondie with rancid...replace b52s with the minutemen...replace the replacements with husker du...replace devo with stiff little fingers...replace joy division with fear...replace patti smith with the misfits...dont get me wrong i like all the bands i replaced...some of his picks i just dont think punk when i think of those bands
"You" were PUNK when you dropped the records on the ground... Epic.

The Saints recorded a version of Wild About You on their debut album (which I'd have in my Top 20 Punk LPs) - th-cam.com/video/iTOfTLqCVpQ/w-d-xo.html

No love for The Damned's Machine Gun Etiquette? Then again, they're always overlooked.

Am also glad to have seen Dead Kennedys live. The Slits too. Like the presentation behind the drum kit! Take care, John.
The drums were my props today. 🥁

The Stooges - The Stooges
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F.
Stiff Little Fingers - Nobody's Heroes
The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegivus
Doubly ironic given that the first four were probably on the top 10 list of most the bands you were listening to.
SLF I would opt for Inflammable Material. But “Roots, Rockers…” off Heroes cannot be beat.👍
Great review. Siouxsie and the Banshees is the only obvious omission for me.
Nice choices … all in my collection … I would include in my list Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade and Minutemen - Double Nickels … / USA and from the UK Stranglers 1st , Wire - Pink Flag and ANYTHING BY THE FALL … cheers, Juergen

"We created it. Let's take it over". Love that line at the end of Patti Smith's My Generation
Oh yeah 🔥
Good choices, interesting show. UK Subs a favourite of mine (still have blue vinyl copy of. ‘ Another kind of Blues’

their best Gimme Some Truth is their early Peel version IMO

I saw The Dammed in 1979 At Bookies Club. They had new 3 song 45 out which they played Then nothing but songs off 1st and 2nd Albums What aShow!!!
a good solid list. Adding a few personal favs: The great SF band The Avengers, The Fall and Killing Joke. thx

Sorry, I could never stand The Slits one bit. The most overrated punk band ever. I take The Rezillos over them any time anywhere.
The Slits only pure punk session is their Peel from 1977. Great stuff.

Great channel.. Have u ever heard of a uk Band from 1978 call SHOOTER..
I have not 🌜
Great list! I saw 14 of those 20 bands live in concert. No post-1980 albums though. I’d add Bad Religion “No Control” and Rancid “And Out Come The Wolves”, personally
The most played album in 76 for me was Horses. I probably should have included the Ramones in my video.
As an honorable mention 🤷🏻♂️
MARQUEE MOON fantastic choice
You were at Winterland for The Sex Pistols?! So was I. I was onstage with my brother, their bodyguard, Noel Monk, their manager, and some guy named Bill Graham. I’m glad you say they sucked and it wasn’t just me.
Nice list. Surprised not to see the first Pretenders record in your 20. ✌️
Great records all Mazzy but some stretches of the punk genre designation. I’d add Bad Brains, Minutemen, Misfits etc. Love your vids.
There was a commercial during this video about how to grow bigger balls Mazzy lol lol lol

Great. 💫
Punk AF!
I’m totally up for a punk-slam with you anytime you are up for it. 🥊
@@mazzysmusic See you in the mosh pit!
Great albums Mazzy! And I like your thoughts about Punk being more of an attitude, a spirit, and not a genre! Rock and roll is rock and roll and that's it! Punk is rock n roll! Glad to see the Ramones on there. They're my favorites! Cheers Matt Street
Great list !. I was lucky enough to find a copy of Horses a few weeks back. $20 ! pretty sure it's an original too.
All great albums, all essential albums for any serious punk collector. Punk it up. Steve
Great selection. The Clash were excellent live but did make my ears ring!
No Elvis Costello? I prefer give em enough rope to the debut LP. But they are close. Added a few must buys off your list. Thanks.
Com’on Man!
Well Yoko did influence many punk and alt artists like the B52s., Sonic Youth , Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie and the Banshees and many others. ✌🏽
I love the fact that you choose several subgenres of punk rock, punk music is way richer that most people think
Absolutely
I love the album from Fear "The Record". Should be up there
No London calling?
Hard Rain is one of my favourite Dylan albums. His voice is powerful on the album (especially 'You're a Big Girl Now'. ) But punk? I agree with Cindy further down the comments on honourable mentions going to The Stooges and New York Dolls. From a UK perspective Sex Pistols higher and Clash No.1.
Great video.
Must say not a serious punk person but I found your dissertation very well done Dig me? Nice delivery punk but not obnoxious. Go Daddy - Oh!🖖🚀
Great choice for your top pick - Patti Smith was punk as fuck. I'm going to pull that out and spin it today.
Cheers, Tom
Yes punk as fuck 🔥😎
Great list!!!!!!!
This is really the choice of an America fan . Nothing wrong with that but my choices would be different . You did pick some excellent albums but many of your chosen albums seemed more new wave than punk . Though the definition of punk is subjective. I have nearly all your albums in my collection
Kool
Great list, but no Pretenders debut album???
The Heartbreakers ”L.A.M.F.” and Johnny Thunders ”So Alone”?
I expected a little drumroll😝Good personal choice these records👌
Loved the inclusion of Hard Rain and Plastic Ono Band.
Yes. You taught me that Honorable Mentions are a real thing. :-)
No Souixsie? No Dickies? yer list needs to go to 22 haI I would def have Tinderbox and Dawn Of The Dickies in thar somewhere, but thats me. Fun list tho
I own 18 out of 20, not bad. I'm from Europe I consider this top 20 as too USA orientated. Lots of UK top albums missing.
Dylan at the Albert Hall 66 was pretty punky as well.
Love the John Lennon tee.
Good choices. But no Stooges?
I have 151 Albums and 156 45s, all punk rock!!!!SKREWDRIVER
I only have 3 Punk albums 😣
And all are to much adult them for TH-cam
Nice, punk.
Ivy Green self titled, Dayglo Abortions - out of the womb, Fear - the record
Agree with your #1 !!!
Okay. I paused this right at the beginning. This is the song. Not your crappy choice. Mine. It’s better than yours and you know it.❤️
No Crass?
You probably saw Flipper, Crime, The Nuns & Dils too? They SF based bands
Yes all of them.
@@mazzysmusic I don't do "being jealous", but god damn you have seen some fantastic bands!
@ simply time, age and place 👨🏻🎨
Leaving out The Jam is the only really obvious missing band here. B-52s over Weller's Jam.........................ok.
nice punk shirt
Can't really disagree with any of the picks, but The Undertones should be included, straight up, non-pretentious , great riffs, great voice.
for sure.....
The US version was drastically different to the original UK issue.
@@davidellis5141 you are talking about Gen X or Undertones? Gen X I think......Yes, but IMO the Brit version has the better songs and is how the band intended it. Listen is a monster.
@@willieluncheonette5843 I have the UK versions of both .
@@willieluncheonette5843 Not sure how GenX entered my thread, but the US and UK LPs Undertones were basically the same.
I recognized each one by the covers alone before you spoke. I'm old. Saw several of them, too. Damn what a great time that was. I can't remember the last time I got excited about a new album or band.
You ever do Industrial countdowns?
No Iggy Pop?
I don’t consider The Replacements a punk band. Solidly New Wave. I had that record. Same with The B-52s.
it's all just rock n roll
No “Modern Lovers”? no Who “Live at Leeds”?
I had only twenty ;-)
With all due respect, and I do respect you immensely, Mazzy; but any of Iggy and the Stooges 3 studio albums eviscerate any and all records you just held up, with regard to this genre. Of course this would assume that punk was conceived a few years prior to 1977. Perhaps it was. I believe it was.
Absolutely. I sorta tried to start in the punk years rather than what’s has become known as proto punk. Those are special records
Sure. All good choices. But as I said at the beginning, punk more or less covers a lot of music. Your list is great but that’s yours 😎.
@@mazzysmusic totally agree...we all have our choices!
