One of my very favorite musicals. Such a shame that it was so overshadowed by Dear Evan Hansen and Bette Midler in Hello Dolly at the Tony awards.

If it had come out another year I think it would've had a better chance! It is definitely an innovative score that had a great chance of winning! I think if this and Come From Away were in different years they definitely would have won!

that quiet moment in The Ball is when Natasha is trying to leave and Anatole grabs her and kisses her, and then she's trying to blame herself for it because social expectations and such

      @CathlynRoseMcKellar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

*sigh* typical 1800s social expectations! Every time I listen I'm just yelling "girl it isn't you its him! Run away!"

I've heard so much about this musical, mostly from how Lin manuel miranda, saw philipa soo in this and then called her for Hamilton

oh wow! I didn't know that! I can get why Lin loved Philipa in this! Her tone of voice is perfect for this!

Okay I'm super late but omg I love this musical so much it's amazing. I reacted in the same way you did a lot like...Natasha just run honey it's not worth it lmaoo. Also "yeah Anatole you high-not your way out of here" is objectively the best thing anyone's ever said about this show.

i was really looking forward to your thoughts on the harmonies in natasha and the bolkonskys, as you seemed really into the others!! also, anatole and dolokhov kiss on stage in the song "balaga." it's vaguely set up that the two of them have some sort of history. i know it was said somewhere that dolokhov was anatole's fourth favorite lover LMAO. ALSO ALSO, pierre's line in pierre & natasha is the single only spoken line in the entire show, and it hits so much harder.
(lastly, it's so small but i giggled at how you can see the light outside fade away into the dark over the video because of how long the soundtrack is)
signed, someone who is obsessed with this musical and could talk about it for hours

Great Comet is my favorite musical! You have to react to Ghost Quartet, It was also written/composed by Dave Malloy, and it’s so good

If you see any clips of the performances, the set was designed in such a unique way to have the audience always be interacting with the cast. Natasha and Mary would sit at a table with the audience, they'd hand out egg shakers, it's so unique and incredible and I wish I was able to experience it

This musical is amazing & I would really love for the composer to compose music for the rest of this story cause this musical only tells a 70 page section of the middle section of the novel War & Peace that this show is based on. There's so much more that happens in the book both before & after the events that this musical depicts.

@@CathlynRoseMcKellar Music theatre is for me one of the most passionate form of theatre, some will not agree with me, but when you watch a show and find a song that resonate with your mind, it's imposible not see yourself on the stage living that moment. I don't know, maybe I'm just too idealistic.

I am a huge Beetlejuice film fan and I will freely admit that I didn't listen to the soundtrack until a good year after it came out cause I was skeptical! but I eventually did give it a listen and tried to see it on Broadway and I am in LOVE! It is a great mix of musical theatre with influences of the film! and it makes me even happier that an Aussie wrote the music! 😄

@@CathlynRoseMcKellarHmmm… I'll list out some of my favorites that I believe are less well known/popular than others. Here are my categories:
      1. Sondheim shows: I'm a die-hard fan of Sondheim. I know he's considered a big name nowadays, but I get the feeling his shows aren't known and appreciated as they could be. Obviously, in my opinion all Sondheim shows are worth listening/watching (thankfully there are a lot of professional recordings!), but here are a few I find not as often mentioned:
Pacific Overtures: very Japanese, kabuki style music that explores the explosive history of Japan's cultural interactions with the western world.
Sunday in the Park with George: explores the artist's struggles of making art, and the price they often pay along the way. The music brilliantly imitates brushstrokes, the explosion of colors, and the transformative journey from chaos to order and harmony.
Assassins: the show examines the long line of American presidential assassins, and how, despite being excluded from American society, they are fundamentally American.
Passion: Sweeping, operatic, almost sung-through score, that explores the line between passion and love.
      2. Non-Sondheim Shows: These are more contemporary shows, which means it's highly likely you might have already listened to/known some of them. Here are my favorites:
Tick Tick Boom: A three-people musical inspired by Jonathan Larson's own one-man show about his life and frustrations as a struggling artist. Rock music in a style quite similar to Rent, but with less romance and more existential crisis.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Rock musical stylized as a one-person show with Hedwig, an embittered transgender (not quite) drag queen rocker, who tells the story of her fated quested for love and wholeness. (Note: do not start with the movie soundtrack-it's good but it's not in sequence)
Der Glöckner von Notre Dame (1999): If you're familiar with the Hunchback of Notre Dame musical, this is it's previous form-adapted straight from the Disney film and performed in German, it features songs that are different from the later, more popular American version of the musical. Language barriers aside, the dark, gothic music is chillingly powerful. th-cam.com/play/PL5NarVlMDfGGor1cb_g25oTBseDQZJ_lX.html
Next to Normal: Juuuuust checking if you've listened to this one yet. If you haven't, it's a near-sung-through show that depicts a dysfunctional family with a mother with bipolar disorder. Hard-driven rock music is used to dramatize mood swings, and in my opinion it's one of the shows where rock music is really baked into the story and its characters.
Amélie (UK cast): a whimsical story about an introverted girl's quest around Parisian streets to find her purpose in life. But the highlight here is the joyful actor-musician orchestrations. Trust me, it'll vibrate through your entire being!
A Killer Party: a wacky show where a bunch of people are trapped in a house with a murder mystery. I can't say much about this one other than it's very fun.
Might you be interested in non-English shows? (That is, listening while following the plot on Wikipedia perhaps) I'll list a few of them with the best music in my opinion (all of them are professionally recorded too if you're interested)
      1. Elisabeth: The grand, epic tale of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, and her love affair with Death himself. The music is at times sweepingly epic, at times edgy and eerie, a fusion of classical and rock.
      2. Notre Dame de Paris: the French musical take on the Hunchback's story. The show is way darker and more fatalistic than its Disney counterpart, featuring a blend of Franco-pop and folk styles.
      3. Mozart, l'Opéra Rock: French biographical musical about Mozart, told through a series of glamorous French pop songs that somehow also include operatic elements.
Sorry if I'm overwhelming you. Hope you find this interesting and enjoy your listen!

@@CathlynRoseMcKellar Dave Malloy also has 2 shows directed by Annie Tippe
Octet - a support group for various forms of internet addiction that is entirely a capella but no less jazzy
and Ghost Quartet - a staged concept album that uses the premise of 4 ghosts trying to remember who they are as metaphors for depression, very stripped down and experimental use of tin-pot percussion, bluegrass strings, and a lot of those extended techniques that appeared in the opera scene in this one, plus its proshot is public and free on youtube
