    Very impressive Natasha! I like your plastic trellis to keep them straight. Like yourself, I grow zinnias and sell them as cut flowers. Here in northeast Georgia, I have two 20 ft x 100 ft plots and one 20 ft x 50 ft. I've always broadcast, but end up over seeding and spend too much time and effort pulling up zinnia seedlings and weeds. Do you buy your weed barrier sheeting with the seed holes pre-cut or do you make them? Your plots are WAY more organized and seedlings are more spaced out than my zinnia jungle, which contributes to powdery mildew. I'm going to your direct seed method next year, because I am wasting too many zinnia seeds. I'll bet you get hundreds of various 🦋 and moth species like I do. My varieties are Lava lamp, Giant cactus, Elegans, Cherry Queen, Envy, and Peppermint stick.

    • @1818Farms
      @1818Farms  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s great to hear from you. I have never heard of the Lava Lamp variety. I will look it up. I purchase the ground cover and burn the holes using a metal
      Template and torch. The ground cover lasts for several years. I recommend it for sure. I plant zinnias using 9 inch spacing. Of course, being in the South,we still fight powdery mildew every year.

    We use raw milk to get rid of grasshoppers and the like. Diluted 10-1 with the one part being the milk. Some insects can't digest the milk and they die. Sprayed with the lifecycle of the insects in mind keeps it off our fields. It also adds very important microbes to the soil to break down organic matter faster. Just be sure it is skimmed will first. Studies by the University of Nebraska are available online. What is the netting for?

    Wow, I can see I need to be nicer to my zinnias! I just throw them in the flower bed, bunched up, never pinching them and just letting them do their thing and everyone loves them. I just keep the dried flower heads in a spare refrigerator over the winter and just rub the flower head so it breaks up ( I don't even pick the seeds out ) and throw them back in the flower bed. To late to space them apart as they have already sprouted but I WILL pinch them back and see what happens. Great advice!

    Hi. I sowed zinnias indoors this year for the first time. It was prob too early- I had no idea they would germinate in 3 days and grow so quickly. In any event, I had them under a grow light and they've gotten so big, I had to remove them from under the light. Some are now about a foot tall in their original pot. I'm getting ready to harden them off in a couple of days, as we've had some colder weather here. But I intend to plant sometime next week in the garden. Is it ok to pinch the zinnias now, under my indoor care? Or, should I wait until they are in the garden next week? Thx.

    I would separate the seeds a little further and when the 3 come up like that, I would transplant the other 2 if they're healthy. I do that constantly with all of my plants, especially vegetables. The only time I don't do it is if I don't need the other plants. I have a high success rate on transplanting because I take as much of the soil that it is growing in as possible and I keep my soil very loose. I absolutely hate killing perfectly healthy plants.

    • @NatashaMcCrary
      @NatashaMcCrary 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      We sometimes will transplant them if we have an area where the seed didn't germinate that is the same color variety. Most of our growing sections are color blocked for quick cutting for orders. We direct seed several thousand zinnias each year. Often we just don't have the space in the field for extra plants.

    • @sweetwaterfarm2928
      @sweetwaterfarm2928 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Coscidering that she is doing this for profit as well as pleasure you have to take the cost of the labor in transplanting all of that into consideration. Seeds, especially if you save them cost almost nothing. Labor is the biggest controllable expense so it makes total sense that she would just eliminate the extras.

    Thanks so much for this really helpful info on pinching. I'm concerned, though, that you use Syngenta seeds -- aren't they GMO? I buy open-pollinated seeds because I can then save my own seed for next year. GMO seed makes growers dependent on the seed company since they cannot be saved. I encourage you to reconsider the kind of seed you are using. Plenty of farmers get great results with heirloom and/or open-pollinated seeds, and they are far better for the environment.

    I love the look of your beds. I'm just starting out with 2 acres or canary grass and I want mine to ultimately look like yours when I'm done. I know, lots of work. I'll get there. Thanks for your videos.

    After watching this lady I’m inspired to grow zinnias and sunflowers . I got my seeds ready and I’m working in building a rich soil. I will use netting as well. Florida is hot in humid. 🎉😊
