    Hi Dara & Ian. Love your Cotswold vid’s. Most of the walled gardens in the UK , apart from looking pretty, were designed to feed the house. During WW1 the noble homes lost most of their staff to the forces Often they had a large greenhouse where the gardener would grow the exotic fruits. A capable estate gardener could try and produce pineapples, not natural by any means in the UK. As a status symbol some of the gates would have stone pineapples as finials for boasting purposes.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much for the bit of history and context. I have seen stone pineapples on entrance gates... I MAY have even taken a photo of that this summer. Let's see if I unearth it in my vlog editing, LOL!
      One of the things I love about Chatsworth House is the stories of the amazing greenhouses there... and speaking of exotic fruits, we all eat Cavendish bananas today because of the 5th Duke of Devonshire living there!

    The rapeseed does look lovely, but it’s imported from Canada and a relatively recent feature of our countryside (it only started appearing noticeably in the 90s I’d say) and although it has a number of uses including as biofuel, it is ironically not all that good for the environment. It attracts a vast number of pests which have to be deterred with the use of an equally large number of chemical pesticides. It’s a bone of contention for the British and many people view it as spoiling - even destroying - our traditional livestock farming, replacing the tranquil scenes you love of (mainly) sheep dotted about on the hillsides with a sea of yellow that isn’t especially in keeping with our landscape.

    • @MagentaOtterTravels
      @MagentaOtterTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darn! I hate it when something looks good but is really actually bad! I hear you... we need more wildflower fields and more bees and other nice insects to keep our lovely British countryside! Dara & Ian. I’m sure you are both aware that in the UK we have a vast network of footpaths that are public rights of way, even if they cross private land. Often these paths are signposted when they leave a roadway. If you can get hold of an Ordnance Survey map of the right scale then they show the footpaths and bridleways.. Paper versions are under £10 each. If you can “read” the map it’s surprising what you can see and learn.

      We have done some trekking along public footpaths, but we need to do lots more!! The public footpath network is certainly a great British treasure!!!
