I like how every other mattress ad is like, "You spend 1/3 of your life in bed, make it comfy" and Nateland's big selling point every week is, "It's fun when you open it."

The first 12 mins of this episode might be my favorite chunk of this show ever. The shuttle scientist, space station, camping “supply” store talk had me full on belly laughing like Santa Claus. That is what makes this podcast so great is conversations like that. Just 4 guys having a great time. Keep it up fellas!

Nate is a great example of the saying “a candle loses nothing by lighting another candle” I heard Dusty talking about his flourishing career on “We’re Having a Good Time” and he gave credit to The Nateland Podcast (which is how I discovered him), Netflix, and Tik Tok. I have seen Brian a few times before but him being on the Podcast has increased my fandom for him too. The jury is still out on Aaron for me 😂

I feel like when Aaron said he wouldn't hold a possum it was because it was evil looking, but when Dusty agreed it felt like there was definitely some specific experience with a possum he was remembering.

listen, i’ve never felt something more than the disgust in aaron’s voice about the opossum. i am legit terrified of them. so much so that one time i was sitting in a car with some friends before we took off and an opossum appeared around the corner (outside of the locked car i was in) and i screamed and grabbed my friends arm so tightly he had to physically remove my hand and was like “that’s…a bruise”

I love when people ask questions about stand up and I love the answers you give. So here’s mine. Why do specials not show the opening act, even just a quick couple of minutes or so? Why do we need it in person and not in our living room?

    • @Creativefunnyname
      @Creativefunnyname ปีที่แล้ว

I would love to have at least the option to watch the opener(s) as well!

    • @livewiiiiire
      @livewiiiiire ปีที่แล้ว

The openers aren't included because the entire night of comedy isn't the special, it's the portion of material by one specific comic. It's self promotion - no one wants someone to watch their special and go, "man, I wish I could have seen an hour from that first guy instead." Taking someone on the road is how you support comics that aren't as well known or popular, not highlighting them on your special. Also, the comics are usually the ones putting up the money for it all. It would get too complicated to have to each put a % in and also split the profits up based on time.
Things are most often funnier and more enjoyable in person, and there's a certain energy being in a room full of laughing people that you really can't replicate in your living room alone. At least, that has been my experience at comedy shows. Same for the comic - they can't eliminate material that just doesn't hit right when they don't have a real time, real life reaction to it. It's important to show up and support the comic -the special/show is their moment, and they feed off of the IRL energy. Some wouldn't be half as good as they are if they were just talking to a camera. For both comic and fan, the in person experience is what it's all about.
(I know you weren't asking me, sorry if this reply was unwarranted)

The conversation about how many syllables in the word Brian was absolutely hilarious. It reminds me of every time I hear Dusty say the word "And". I try to count the syllables in that he includes in that word. I know there's at least two possibly three. Seems to add extra letters in there I think there's a "Y" and possibly a "U" in there. It might just be the most country anybody has ever sounded in the history of sounding southern. I just love hearing him say the word.

This episode reminds me of the quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “architecture is frozen music”. I believe a comedian is an artist. It takes a lot to get up there and put pieces together to create a finished product. Just like a painting, a comedian can be amazing to one person, but, another person may not “get it” or see what you see. I can relate to Nate on how we grew up (i’m right behind him, born in March 1980) so a lot of his comedy brings both laughter and nostalgia, whereas someone else will feel absolutely nothing. Architecture, music, paintings etc. all mean different things to different people and bring out a mix of feelings and emotions, just like comedy. PS, I loved to paint and draw when i was younger, i still paint on occasion. I also create macrame that I sell. Sometimes i try different designs/colors, some i’ve hated and wanted to toss in the trash, those particular pieces have sold faster than others, go figure. Keep doing what you’re doing, you are all loved!

My favorite Banksy story is from the show The Outsiders. The characters are rehabbing a community center filled with graffiti. During filming of the show somebody had connections to Banksy and had him paint a small mural of a rat. Frank, Christopher Walken's character, is seen asking his probation officer if he should cover-up the artwork after being told to paint over the graffiti on the wall. However, she is facing the other way, unaware it's a Banksy painting, meaning Frank runs his roller over the rat.
So this infamous painting only existed physically for less than a day and now only lives within the world of the show.

The Cysteine Chapel portion of this podcast had me in tears from laughing so hard. I feel as if Brian could almost have an alter ego. (although I cannot say for sure which one would be the "main ego"). We have "Bri-an Bates" the self proclaimed professional movie critic and "Brine Bates", the backwoods tourist who simply exclaims "gawwwwwwly, look at all this"! when first entering the Cysteine chapel. Hey guys - love you all! Cannot wait for Brain & Dusty to come to NJ. I just saw Aaron last week, with Joe. Aaron killed, he is so funny!! I just wanted to share my advice on here for anyone worried about coming to see any shows after listening to the podcast; I listen to another comedian's podcast and see them often and I will be honest I don't enjoy their specials / shows as much because a lot is from the pod. With this podcast however I do not have that concern, I have seen Nate since the pod began and he is just as funny as pre-pod and Aaron told one joke that he mentioned on the pod but elaborated more in person and it killed. I will definitely continue watching the podcast and look forward to anyone coming to NJ!!

On the topic of syllables, I've gotten in multiple disagreements with friends and family with southern accents who say both "fire" and "oil" are one syllable a piece. Despite being born and raised in Montgomery, AL, I say each of them have 2 syllables. One of my arguments is to say the word "firefighter".

I think I just subscribed to Aaronland. It’s true Art values are so arbitrary (sorry to make you read that Nate). We had a client with a massive art collection. One piece was called “black trapezoid” which was exactly what you think. White canvas. Black trapezoid painted. The value was $50,000,000. Ridiculous.
People also borrow millions of dollars against their art as collateral and then invest that money in other things.

I laughed when Big Money Bates made a joke about a guy at Subway calling himself a sandwich artist because I used to work at Subway when I was 16 and "sandwich artist" was legitimately what my job position was called when I applied for the job. That was what Subway titled the position and so even though I don't work there anymore I will proudly claim that title for the rest of my life just because it's kinda funny. I even used to put "sandwhich artist" in my resume and it was kinda a joke but that was actually what my job was called. The best part though was being able to introduce myself as a "paid artist" when meeting people for the first time. Of course I always had to explain right after that my "artistry" was sandwiches but for those few fleeting moments in between I could feel like a star. My days of sandwhich artistry are behind me now though and I'll be graduating college at the end of this semester. I'm not sure what I'll do after I graduate but maybe I'll get back into the art and become like the next Banksey or something but for sandwiches, leaving meatball marinaras and such in unthinkable places. Whatever I do at least I know I can always go home at the end of the day and make myself an incredibly average sandwich.

Nate, it was your opinion that society ultimately decides who is an artist and what is art. I would say that anyone that creates anything is an artist, and the people decide whether or not it is good.

Regarding Subway Sandwich artistry-My husband was a Subway sandwich artist in high school. One night he was there alone at night just before closing. There had been a lot of robberies around the area so he was on guard. A guy in all black and a hat walked in and went straight to the register (instead of where you start the line for ordering). My husband got so nervous he pressed the button on the register that said Police, Fire, thinking it was a silent panic alarm to call 911. Instead the register showed a sandwich discount for policeman and fireman, which the man saw. He then awkwardly asked my husband if Kevin was there (Kevin was the manager). It was just a friend of the manager. My husband felt so bad he thought this guy was going to rob him!

I worked at Subway for 2.5 years during high school and as a former Sandwich Artist, I'd like to speak to Brine's comment. Funny as it sounds, this was our actual job title. I don't know if it's still this way, but at the time, a Sandwich Artist at Subway was as real as a Marketing Coordinator at a Fortune 500 company. Imagine what it was like applying for jobs and having to put "Sandwich Artist" on your resume. It's definitely a good icebreaker during interviews. Sandwich Artists of the world unite!

Listening to Aaron dismissing improv got me riled up. Like Dusty, I’ve done both. Thankfully, Nate and Dusty set him straight a little bit. Improv is amazingly fun and super creative if it’s done right. By the way Aaron, some improvisations are written down and turned into sketches. Chris Farley and Bob Odenkirk did Matt Foley, Motivational Speaker, at Second City Chicago then brought it to SNL. There are countless examples of improv becoming sketches.

It seemed odd that Nate was as disinterested in how many shades of color there are until he reminded us that he's, in fact, _colorblind!_ It reminded me of a prior Nateland podcast where he mentioned his sister would tease him by asking what color things were.
I said it before, it would be a *very* interesting show if Nate tried on a pair of EnChroma glasses for the colorblind and we get to see his first reaction.

The name Aiden (and anything that rhymes with Aiden) is very common for boys who are currently 10-23 years old. Once a friend told me, “my coworker brings her son to get his haircut by you. Her last name is blah blah blah. Do you know her son?” I replied “What is his first name? BTW, if it rhymes with Aiden I won’t know. There are too many of them.” She replied, “His name IS Aiden.” Also, my sons are 18-19 and they each had at least 7 friends named Jaden, Caden, Braden or Aiden.

Hello folks, I just have three things to say...
I'm so glad you talked about stress eating and food in this episode. During the last five or six episodes, nobody has said a word about food, their eating habits, or belt size.. I was afraid the show was taken over by imposters. What a relief!
Secondly, I can't believe you guys spent all that time talking about rocket scientists and brain surgeons and not once used the phrase. "It's not rocket surgery". We use this phrase all the time in our home to explain the most complex of complex things. Think about it.
Finally, I'm dying to know if Brian Bates and Tom Bergeron are twins that were separated at birth. I mean seriously, how is being on this show different than hosting AFV?
Keep crushing it fellas. Listening to this podcast makes all the most boring things I do funner.
Noah Miles, Spokane WA (please come back sometime!)

If Dusty would have taken the tour of the Cold War exhibit at the Air Force Museum in Dayton he would have learned that the difference between a rocket and missile is that a missile is guided and a rocket isn't. They have nuclear tipped rockets (the nuclear part is removed!) in the museum that could have been placed in the Arctic and been used in a counter strike to a potential Soviet invasion over the Arctic Ocean. They talked about how after you shoot a rocket their isn't a way to control it.
Also I love you guys calling a Titans win to the Jags game. That didn't age well, lol! There is always next year! Titan Up!!!

As an educator ChatGPT scares me a bit. But as a person I find t amazing. Like this little joke about Vandy Football:
"You know, I've been thinking about the Vanderbilt football team lately. And you know what I've realized? They're like that one relative that you're just kind of embarrassed to bring up in conversation. You know, they're not terrible, but they're not exactly good either. They're just kind of...there.
But you know what's really funny? They're in the SEC. The Southeastern Conference. The best college football conference in the country. And Vanderbilt is like the kid that gets picked last for kickball, but somehow ends up on the all-star team. I mean, it's like they snuck in the back door or something.
And I know what you're thinking, 'But Nate, Vanderbilt's got a great academic program.' Yeah, I know. But let's be real, when's the last time you heard someone say, 'I'm gonna go to Vanderbilt because they've got a great football team'? Never. Because they don't.
But you know what's even funnier? They're in the same division as Alabama. Alabama! The team that's won more national championships than they've lost games. That's like being in a boxing match with Muhammad Ali and thinking you're gonna win because you've got a pretty good left hook.
But hey, Vanderbilt's got spirit, I'll give them that. They might not win many games, but they'll go down cheering. And that's more than I can say for some teams. So here's to Vanderbilt, the little engine that couldn't, but somehow still does.
    Technology is so so cool.

I'm an artist, and wanted to comment on how Aaron said there was no yellow in TV. There's a difference between how colors mix together if the colors are being projected at you -- via from a screen or digital device -- versus how they mix together the way we see them in the real world -- where light is bouncing off of objects and being reflected into our eyes. With digital or projected light, the primary colors are Red, Green and Blue (RGB). From mixing those colors together you can get up to 16 million different shades. Mixing digital red and green together gives you yellow -- but in the real world that would make brown.

When Nate said he'd been doing comedy for 20 year as if that was long time (which to me it is), I thought of the interview where Louis C.K. told Theo Von oh you're only 18 years into comedy? you've got so far to go. I can't wait to see what Nate, Aaron, Dusty, and Bedrest do over the next 20 years.

Breakfast needs to start up his own budget travel agency. You'll miss the actual statue of David (which is kept inside a museum to protect it), but he's more than happy to show you the half-size replica and tell you it's the real thing. To top it off, he'll be worried the whole time. By the way, that replica statue is only a 10 minute walk from the actual statue.

My best friend decided she would “make some art” to hang in her apartment. You know the just splash some paint in random places and make lines that for whatever reason is like incredible when some folks do it. She then started dating a guy who was an artist and he came over and was like “those are terrible” ( not knowing she did them) and she was like “oh totally i just got got them from goodwill to be ironic” and he was like “oh well that’s cool then” like who is making the rules on this?!

I taught a student named Isis last year in PE when she was a kindergartner and I’ll be honest with you, I would 100% rather deal with the terrorist organization than that little girl again.
I had a boy come up to me crying once saying that Isis was being mean and I came back with “Well buddy a long as she isn’t screaming Allah Akbar I think you’ll be okay.” One of my best off the cuff remarks I’ve ever made and there wasn’t anyone around old enough to understand it. It killed in the teachers lounge at lunch though.

But here’s my dilemma, my husband and I are headed to see Nate on January 21st, and I’m not going to be up-to-date on all the Nateland inside jokes. Is “Let’s Go Folks!” still a thing? Because back in November 2021 (episode 71) it is still a very real thing! I feel like I am trying to cram for the weirdest test that won’t be graded but I could somehow still fail.
Can I get Cliffs Notes for all of Nateland 2022?
Either way I canNOT wait for the show!!!
