All great turns, and yet THIS is the performance that towers over Colman’s CV. The scene where she reveals the extent of her husband’s cruelty will forever haunt me.

Agree.IMO, it is Mullan's best performance as well. There have been no movies that have probed human despair as much since. Just not a successful formula. I think people want to forget the human condition rather than relive it at the cinema.

Peter Mullan plays the romantic lead in a slow paced English comedy called Mum, sings in a Proclaimers musical called Sunshine on Leith and plays villains that are so dark they are genuinely frightening - the range of that man!

An incredibly haunting and powerful film! Thank you for this video, so happy to see a video essay on this film. Olivia Colman should have been recognised by awards guild and THIS should have been her breakthrough in Hollywood. In fact, had the Oscars nominated her, it'd have made the dull 2011 Best Actress race somewhat interesting.
