- People told me I couldn’t find authentic Vietnamese street food is I stayed in the Thao Dien in District 2 of Saigon. Thankfully I’ve been following @lukenguyencooks on Instagram and he’s been posting some awesome spots like the one we’re hitting today.
I ordered:
Bún thịt nướng and bánh mì and it came to 40,000 VND for both - $1.62 / £1.30

The dishes:
Picture a culinary masterpiece that tantalises the senses and tells a story of Vietnam's rich gastronomic heritage - that's bun thit nuong. This iconic dish begins with a foundation of delicate vermicelli noodles, like fine threads woven into a tapestry of taste. Next comes the star of the show: thit nuong, or grilled pork. Imagine succulent slices of pork marinated in a symphony of flavors - garlic, lemongrass, and hints of sweetness from honey or sugar. Each piece is carefully grilled to perfection, acquiring a caramelized char on the outside while remaining tender and juicy within.
Now, let's talk about the accompaniments. Crisp lettuce leaves, crunchy bean sprouts, and refreshing cucumber slices provide a symphony of textures, creating a harmonious balance with the tender pork and soft noodles. Fragrant herbs like mint, cilantro, and Thai basil add layers of aromatic complexity, infusing every bite with freshness and vitality.
But what truly elevates bun thit nuong to culinary greatness is the dressing - a magical concoction of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, and chili. This ambrosial sauce brings all the elements together, imparting a perfect blend of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy notes that dance on the palate with each mouthful.
As you take your first bite, the flavors unfold like a blossoming flower, awakening your taste buds to a world of sensory delight. With every forkful, you embark on a culinary journey through the vibrant streets of Vietnam, where each ingredient tells a tale of tradition, culture, and passion for good food.
In essence, bun thit nuong is more than just a dish - it's a celebration of flavour, a testament to the artistry of Vietnamese cuisine, and a sensory experience that lingers in your memory long after the last bite is savoured.
About the area:
Thao Dien in District 2 of Saigon is like a vibrant neighborhood tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, yet pulsating with its own unique energy. Picture tree-lined streets adorned with charming cafes, bustling markets, and an eclectic mix of boutiques and eateries. Here, you'll find a delightful blend of local culture and international flair, with expats and locals mingling seamlessly. With its leafy streets, cozy atmosphere, and diverse culinary scene, Thao Dien is not just a neighbourhood - it's a lifestyle. Whether you're exploring its hidden gems, savouring delicious street food, or simply soaking in the local charm, this slice of Saigon offers a delightful escape from the urban hustle, inviting you to experience the city's vibrant spirit in a more laid-back setting.

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this TH-cam channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

I went to Saigon from BKK about 2 months ago,and I did exactly what you say sometimes,I got lost in different alleys and got to enjoy food and attitudes that I never thought possible, people just smile and I used my translating app to get around,no rush about anything so I just enjoyed life.Thank you all that make this channel possible, cheers.
Banh mi is something I absolutely need to try!!! Thanks for taking us around local areas 🎉
The bbq/ or meat on sticks looks awesome & delicious! Wish I could have smelled it 😉 We’ve never been to Vietnam but I know we will be heading over there one of these days!! Love Vietnamese food ❤ The sandwich looks yummy & thanks for taking us along! 😊
Saw you from the street wander yt channel. Just wanted to say that you have such a deep appreciation and understanding of food. Really impressive 👍👍👍👍. Subscribed !
Thank you so much! 🙏🙏
I also noticed that Luke has been posting some good eats in Vietnam too as of late. He is knows Calvin too. Proper choice today mate, Banh Mi and But thit nuong classics , my 2 favorites. 5am fiasco was pretty bad Gary.
No need to apologize or quantify your liking district 2. Your video just proves that VN has the most “democratic” food culture, ie cheap delicious food at awesome price sold by their rightfully proud mom and pop owners are EVERYWHERE in VN, local or expat neighborhoods. What I’m glad to see is that this humble stall thrives in such a ritzy neighborhood implies even the well off expats and rich local Vietnamese frequent this spot. Good on both the eatery and the customers to go where the good food is, regardless of the outward appearance.
Nice one, Gary. Would have wanted the crispy pork also, but I'll go with what you got, and the Banh Mi was a great morning wake me up. I can't wait for the rest of the Saigon videos. And I love the excitement and vibe of Bangkok, but it's also nice to have a quieter morning with great food and good people.
Lucky Gary. Just looking at the banh mi makes my mouth water.
I haven’t watched Gary’s videos for a long time and now he is
Welcome back 😀
5:45 That’s what I’ve been saying for years, that _bún thịt nướng_ is superior to _bún chả_ 😁 Finally, a man of culture who understands this.
BTW I hate it when an area is deemed “unauthentic” by foreigners just because it’s affluent. What, locals need to stay living in squalor in order to maintain a sense of “authenticity”for visitors? 🙄 I find that insulting and I’m not even Vietnamese. Looking at 0:23 it’s pretty clear that these stalls cater mainly to locals, so I don’t know where this self-importance comes from. Food looks great, too, and 40000 VND sounds about right. Definitely not a tourist trap.
Good on you for not listening to the naysayers. It’s a convenient area with authentic food stalls, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, what’s not to like?👍
So fresh looking!
The best!
Thank you Gary for making video :)
You know you've reached street food paradise when the table is only a smidge bigger than the chair.
First went to Vietnam in 1995, Zone 4 is good too. The Vietnamese craft beer scene is fantastic. Have you tried the egg coffee?
Me too. Just watched two of his videos yesterday.
Legend
Thanks!
Thanks so much Panna 🙏🙏🙏
Hello Panna, hope all is well 🙏
@@brucewayne2773 All is well, Bruce, just a little too busy lately. Hope you are doing well, too. 😊
I haven’t been watching his video for a long time and now he is here
I'm sure the locals appreciate you trying to speak Vietnamese Gary. Looks like you're doing alright with that tasty food👍

Great video Gary, also a fan of Luke Nguyen 06:45 .... I am sure he's watching :)
Gary is back
Bun thit nuong FTW
Best wishes to your travel
Thanks for visiting mỹ birth country VN .
❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
The pleasure is all mine, thank you for watching 🙏
While Thao Dien has its own character and places, u can explore places in district 4 and district 3 that are also quite local. and FYI, the bun thit nuong should be eaten with cha gio or the spring rolls. So next time try Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio and go to the location is district 4 to a place called Bánh Mì Thịt Nướng Anh Thư - you won't regret it.
Gary, funny u mentioned Thảo Điện. I had the same thinking b4 re no local foods, so I stayed away and live in D3/Phu Nuan instead. But since living here, I had a chance to visit Thảo Diễn in numerous occasions, and u r correct that it does have local Viet street food, + many western restaurants (best of both worlds, I do like the occasional pizza/burger), though rent is higher in D2 though. Btw, u should chk out D3, best local food, IMO
Now paying $11.50 for a Banh Mi in Australia but is a little bigger. One thing I have noticed is all the tradies eating them. Loved Luke Nguyen's series around France.
Nope don’t smell the smoke. Absolutely love meat on sticks. Yum Yum pork. Absolutely Outstanding
Under £1.30 for that is incredible
😊
7:00 bạn có thể nhờ người bán hàng cắt giúp bạn, bạn thật là thật thà haha
Haha thank you!
As much as I loved Saigon & the food I got bored of the noodles & craved something different
I was on a Vietnamese food binge for awhile and learned to cook many of their dishes, I love Vietnamese food but as you mentioned not much variety and many of their dishes start to taste the same/similar after awhile.
Hi Gary
Hey Mike!
🤤
How is the weather?
Saigon is pretty hot right now
As Patrick said, it was hot!
Hahaha, u never heard of the saying about hcmc weather? it’s either hot or hotter
After exploring SE Asian street food for a decade. I’ve come to the realization that, any half decent restaurant is much better than street food.
Street food is ok, cheap, fun. But hygiene is usually lacking. If you want the local experience , go street food. But quality food, go to a decent restaurant.
In 28 years of travelling in S.E Asia I've never had a problem with street food "Hygiene" as you put it. I check out the stall, check out the crowd and if it looks busy and they have good food handling process, go for it. Only places I ever had issues were always places I didn't get to see my food prepared, I.E. "Decent" restaurants. I just got back from 5 weeks eating my way across Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, not one single issue with street food and had the best food in out of the way spots like Gary showed in this video. You might be doing something wrong my friend...
😮
😎😎😎
$1.62, wow. I am so outta here.... thanks Gary. How long you gonna be in Vietnam?
