If we’re being COMPLETELY HONEST…it’s 3 large almost insurmountable reasons why the WNBA doesn’t work.
1. American culture/society. Sports has and IS always looked at as a way to showcase the masculine side of things! That’s why most contact & combat sports are considered “MANLY”. American culture/society, as much influence as the LGBTQI movement has had, still approves & accepts of men being “masculine” & women being “feminine”. Women’s contact & combat sports don’t look/feel “feminine” and that’s just how our society looks at sports.
2. You’re selling a worse product where there’s literally a directly better version of the SAME EXACT THING! The NBA is more exciting, has faster, stronger, more explosive and exciting athletes than the WNBA playing the same exact sport in the same exact way in most of the same exact cities. If I’m an average parent why would I take my daughter (or son) to see a WNBA player play vs Lebron, Steph, Giannis, etc. if not JUST to support women’s basketball. If I’m not worried about supporting just to support, I’m going to purchase the better version of the product. I would even argue that high school AAU is putting on a more exciting product on the floor than the WNBA.
3. The demographic you’re selling to doesn’t want to BE you or look up to you personally. Most average men would love to be their favorite player for a day or really see them as role models/idols etc. even sometimes when they’re adults. Most dudes would give up so much to be Lebron James, Steph Curry, KD, Giannis etc. for 1 week just to live their life. On the flip side most women see WNBA players as butch, manly, too masculine, and if they’re tall or stud looking they certainly don’t relate to them. Say what you want, but most women still want to be seen as attractive to the opposite sex, they still want to feel feminine and sexy; and that’s just not something WNBA players come across as EVEN if their heterosexual and pretty, our society just doesn’t view them in that light. Which makes it very difficult for that wife, mom of 2 or whatever to really give and support the way men support their favorite NBA OR NFL team. Men see the best versions of themselves and their dreams in the players they watch. Most women dont see the same when they look at a WNBA player.
I’m just being honest. You have to really change some societal and cultural norms for the WNBA to thrive and even then it’ll be tough
