This album is a black metal masterpeice. The songwriting, the vocal performance, the mix/master, lyrics, the skills in playing their instruments. Everything is perfect. I think this album has gone under the radar for many black metal fans. You have to listen to this album many times to fully appreciate it. Blasphemer really deserves credit for the songs he wrote on this album. There is no other black metal album like it.
Ordo Ad Chao and Grand Declaration of War are Mayhem's two best albums and I refuse to debate it with anyone. Blasphemer had more balls going against the grain than Euronymous ever had trying to fashion an image for himself.
To save it from ridicule from narrow minded Mayhem "fans" I'd rather just say it's avant garde at this point. Ordo Ad Chao and Grand Declaration are my two favourite Mayhem albums. I guess I'm just one of the few people out there who actually gave them a chance and now "get" them..
@@Metal-Possum I "got" them when they came out. I remember back in 2000 when GDOW was out everyone was disappointed and shit on it. They wanted another De Mysteriis, or at least something closer to Wolf's Lair Abyss. I love DMDS, but Mayhem was able to evolve and take BM further, adding progressive and avant-garde elements. In fact GDOW was the natural progression to Wolf's Lair Abyss, they're both part of a unique concept, past, present and future. They're very accomplished musicians, and they never made a record similar to another either. GDOW is arguably my favorite, that era with Maniac and Blasphemer was phenomenal.
I agree. I think this is the best Mayhem album. I dont understand why this album is not appreciated more amongst Mayhem fans. The musicianship and songwriting skills on this album is on another level. On top of that you have Athilla's excellent vocal performance. He sounds like he's from another dimension. This is uniqe. Too much black metal sounds exactly the same these days.
This is the reason mayhem can get away with just 5 albums across 30 years of activity, every single one is a fresh take on their own sound and every single one a masterpiece in it's own right
@@comfylain Exactly! What does he mean "except"?? GDOW is a complete masterpiece and arguably their best. That period between Wolf's Lair Abyss and Chimera was their most interesting songwriting wise for me, Blasphemer and Maniac were essential parts of the Mayhem's machine.
@@GabrielLopez-we6yn it's funny that black metal started due to musicians wanting to break conventions and push boundaries, and then when they did it within their genre people cry about it. i bet you 100% these guys cream over Varg's shitty Casio preset loop "trance" track and GuitarPro programmed "ambient" albums though
It's a whole lot less accessible than De Mysteriis, and the average Mayhem listener can be incredibly cliche and make no effort to even try and enjoy their diverse catalogue. Ordo Ad Chao and Grand Declaration are very rewarding albums, I'm just glad I learned to enjoy them because they stimulate my brain a whole lot more than the repetitive and derivative sounds that De Mysteriis is responsible for.
I was absolutely stunned by this when it came out. I was listening to Dark Funeral when my friend brought the album over. It was such a stark and welcoming contrast to all the straight forward 4/4 black metal I was listening to on repeat that year.
many will argue that it's not true black metal like Darkthrone Transylvania Hunger.... its a different style but this is definitely a masterpiece from Mayhem. Rune will always have the sickest riffs
To tell you the truth, i wish this wasn't black metal, just so all these narrow minded assholes get incredibly pissed off. People care so much for categorization, that they miss the point of music.
@@Abrahamhamham man I agree with you so much. I can't stand all these categories and people getting so butt hurt over who's what....it's metal. Metal is metal
Transylvanian Hunger is an exquisite piece of minimalism. But I suspect it has to do with Varg Vikernes influence on that album since he was already experimenting with minimalism in those days. Anyway, this album by Mayhem is great, underrated BM album but great.
@@Metal-Possum How can anyone only like De Mysteriis ? Wolfs lair abyss, Grand declaration, Chimera, Ordo ad chao, Esoteric warfare, Daemon all great albums
I hate to say it but i hate new mayhem. Anything past A Grand Declaration of War is all shit. I like Attila and his vocals are kick ass but i dont like the new stuff. R.I.P Mayhem

They're still getting better
@@Metal-Possum Ordo, Grand AND Esoteric are the best Mayhem albums at least for my taste.
This song (and whole album) are so underrated, some of Mayhem's best work.
No
My favorite song in this album.
Best track of the album
Some of the best riffs to ever be associated with Black Metal are on this one, in my opinion.

More like Progressive Blackened Avant-garde metal.

That's why I own 2.

Yeah except Grand declaration of course although great cover if you ask me
Death Crush!!!! That's the best one!!! But DARK THRONE IS KING!!! NO ONE CAN TOUCH THEIR RAWNESS

im starting to try to appreciate, understand this genre. How can I do a good culture and got the ideal culturals instruments to understand this genre?
they are retards that don't know shit about music, probably

I think it's in the 8th octave range.

this is way more sinister than 1 chord riffs out of transylvania hunger
This track, that outro!!!
This is that rarest of items, a truly unique-from-the-ground-up black metal CD.

This song is so long I got an ad during it…
Love that DSBM tone in this one.

Rune Eriksen’s best work before Vltimas.
Vltimas or Candlemass ? Who wins ??? YOU decide !!!
Hellhammer thinks so too. Although overall i prefer Grand Declaration Of War, Wolf's Lair Abyss and Chimera.
1 dislike... Nice try, Jesus!

Dude, even Jesus digs this, because even Jesus is more open minded than those overly vocal people who only like De Mysteriis and nothing after it...

Black metal hipster you are
People who think that only Euro and Dead are Mayhem... FUCK YOU!
Would you like some money to call someone who cares?
Is not our fault that you prefer a bunch of kids screaming instead of real men playing jazz chords, inhuman rythms and an actual emotional piece
