Kingsley demonstrates an Alexander Technique First Session with Tommy. This first session relates the Alexander Technique to states of Being like Mindfulness and Embodied Presence. Tommy shares how he often distracts himself away from a quality of softness and stillness with his usual habits. And he reports how powerful his first Alexander experience is for him. This session was filmed at Anthony's Alexander Teacher Training School in Golders Green, London on July 6th, 2023.

I do not fully understand the ins and outs if the Alexander technique. Having said that, your voice, tone, and nice manners are extremely appealing to me. I feel totally relaxed when I listen to you and watch your videos.

"finds itself navigating back home." This! Exactly why I come here to participate in the lessons as much as one can from far away.

A great demonstration Anthony! Although only briefly mentioned, it’s very interesting to hear the relationship between something like the Alexander technique, association and the rise in such attention disorders such as ADHD. Would love a deeper dive on subjects like this, especially with diagnoses being so prevalent in today’s society. Props to Tommy in this video too, he felt like the perfect student and really thought about his answers on how he felt. Thanks for sharing!

I love table work when it comes to the Alexander Technique. From someone who suffers from lower back pain, iv taken tips from your videos to get in the most relaxed state as possible. It’s hard to find Alexander Teachers here in the US.

Thank you very much for sharing those videos Anthony :-)
I’d like to make a remark on this video too :-/. I hoop you don’t mind. It did not feel natural to separate the audio tracks of the pupil and of the teachers on two different channels left and right as from the viewing angle of the video both should come from the same place.

It seems to me that when someone identifies a problem that has not been satisfactorily fulfilled medically, they are primed and motivated to seek resolution through other means.
While there are documented benefits of alternate care, they are primarily gained through protracted, attentive concern, repetitive touch, soothing voice and the relative confidence of the practitioner - which primary medical services may lack due to high volume throughput. I would suggest the Alexander technique falls into this grey area of therapy, and has no verified, double blind control evidence to support any specific health problems, but may very well make the patient 'feel' better for mundane or non specified, placebo reasons.

If I could bottle the benefits of placebo, I would be very wealthy. Of course Alexander makes people feel better and get healthier. And we may not know the true mechanisms of this effect. Same with Yoga and meditation.Unfortunately we in the Alexander world do not have millions of pounds to do rigorous controlled trials. We are not Big Pharma. But we have a number of scientific data on the efficacy of the AT for back pain as well as Parkinsons, that is in the public domain and published. But of course you are quite right: The care, attention, safety, kindness, time and non-threatening touch are all part of the healing process. And it takes a minimum of 3 years to begin to develop these qualities, They are by no means easy to acquire!!

Thanks for responding. I'll offer a final note and retire the conversation.
The amount of money required for extensive testing is generally for drugs or other direct treatments because that's simply good risk management that most governments demand and pharmaceutical companies foot the bill for - some tests last 5 or more years with no return on that expenditure.
I would suggest you could test for the efficacy of the Alexander by isolating or modifying the techniques to determine which ones, (or combinations) are effective. For example. Have the client in a dark room. Do not speak during the treatment. Use an instrument for touch instead of hands. Introduce offensive sounds or odors during treatment. If the results are found with one or more, you can then isolate your focus into those areas for further examination. If they are not, then we should expect the cause of the client's issues to be chemically, genetically, biologically or psychologically based. If so, professionals in those areas should be sought out.
It seems to me, attributing a technique to teasing a placebo is doing something with a couched explanation (Dumbo's magic feather), and as such may cause further harm to clients by suggesting medical care is no longer required. Case in point: AA is renowned for it's 12 steps that have nothing to do with the chemistry or causes of addiction, yet pretends it does through diversion. For some, it offers a distraction to cover the problem without addressing it, and the rate of recidivism is actually higher than other therapies. If a client is noticing improvement through a placebo, they should be told so and then supported with their accomplishments and not by an unrelated treatment.
Not many humans relish the torment of others and health practitioners are especially susceptible to confusing sympathy with empathy, so they need to remain objective with their care even if they are dealing with subjective cases. Honesty, and the Hippocratic oath are cornerstones for this. @@AlexanderTechnique33

Oh man. I took a semester-long course on the AT and found it to be of ZERO value. Not everyone in my class felt that way…but many did. Perhaps we just had a terrible teacher.
