  • If you are in your 40s there is a pretty good chance that you got your first car in the 1990s, and odds are it was a Honda or a Toyota.
What did you drive in the 1990s?

Well I was born in 2006, just got my license last year. I drove my parents old 2004 Honda CR-V for the first year. Not the most fun car to drive, but extremely reliable. Weather it was snow, dirt trails, extremely cold temperatures, or 110 degree days, I could just start it and drive it with no problem at all.
A few weeks ago I got a 2010 VW Golf as my true first car. It is the base model, with a 2.5l 5-cylinder and a 5 speed manual. It has 140k miles on it, and it is in great condition and runs like new. I will see how reliable it is in the long run, but the 2.5 i5 is supposed to be one of VW's most reliable engines

91 Isuzu stylus, look it up, basically love child of the Isuzu/chevy marriage in the 90’s with a little Lotus tuned suspension thrown in , in America it had a cousin and it was the Geo Storm , that car was so much fun keeping up or beating sometimes the souped up civics of the day , I always respected what the Hondas where , a simple
Commuter car but with so much potential , I credit the Honda
Tuners with this second great age of muscle cars we have now it was a fun time

I was raised on Chevy & Buick (and drive a LaCrosse), but I had a good friend growing up whose mom drove a '90s charcoal, boxy Accord. And at one point I went with them to a Honda dealer (Hendrick Honda of Easley, SC circa 2002-ish) to buy a clean, used '99 or '00 Accord. Gold on beige leather. My mama drove a '96 Lumina at the time (an actually decent car that had its merits mind you!) but that newer Accord was a revelation. The smell, the dash, the solid 'thunk' of the doors closing. It felt like a luxury car. New Hondas are okay but they don't give me that same vibe anymore.

I bought my first car two years ago. It was a 1996 Honda Civic EX Sedan 4 speed auto in Tafetta White. Canadian spec, so D16Y7 non vtec motor. I had it for 6 months and it was very reliable, but it was old and had a couple of electrical gremlins, no functioning A/C, and a decent amount of body rust. Since then I also owned a 2009 Hyundai Accent with a 5 speed trans and I am currently driving a 2015 5 speed lancer.

I wouldn't call myself a Xennial. I'm a but too young for that - Class of 2010. But I daily a 5-speed '97 Prelude Type SH. I had a 2000 4-speed Prelude in high school and college that I sold in 2015 at 197,000 miles and regretted ever since. But I always said if I could do it again, I'd get a Type SH. It turns out one day last summer, a neighbor was selling his. 251,000 miles. It needs some love, but it is a manual, it has a Type S red top H22A swap, and you can bang that engine out to >7,000 RPM all day. It won't complain. I drove it 80 miles an hour halfway across Oklahoma and back. Engine spun 4,000 the whole time. Never gave me any issues. Nothing is built like a 90s Honda or Toyota. Those cars will outlive your kids with basic maintenance.
There's a story about the light bulb. It got to being too reliable and the manufacturers were losing money on them. So they all got together and determined to make them worse so people would have to buy them more often. I feel cars have gone the same direction. 90s cars are built SO WELL that they work better today than 70s cars did 20 years ago. They made them too good. And about after the market recovered from the 2008 economic collapse, they decided to make them overly complicated so they develop major problems sooner and we have to buy cars more often. I feel like people picked up on this, and that's why normal 90s cars in good shape can still fetch you over 50% of the original MSRP today.
But I'll keep driving 90s and 00s cars for as long as I possibly can.
Btw, if you still want a pretty decently made car for under $20k that comes with a manual as standard equipment, look at the Nissan Versa S. I'm really considering one for my next car.

All through the 90s I was driving a Nissan Pulsar NX. Many of the things that made Honda so great at that time would apply to the NX as well although I will not say it had Honda reliability. The engine was simple and solid but the transmission was a bit of a headache. Super fun car to drive though. Of all the cars I've owned the NX was my favorite. This was my first car & I just want a plug & play option + 90s civic were still a hot ticket item to steal. Getting the 05 aside from their issues was nice & obviously had to go with EX special edition coupe with alloy rims + aux cable stereo. 7th gen civic don't get enough love & they can def be tricked out respectfully

My first car was a 1993 Volvo 965 (bought in 2014) which was about as reliable as you can imagine and it was CONSTANTLY in the shop with expensive repairs that was brutal for a college student. I sold it at a loss and later bought my second car, a 2008 Fit, my first manual car and it was SO GOOD. I was working construction and I could fit an eight foot ladder in it and it absolutely RIPPED, and it was so much fun to have a car I could absolutely wring out and get great fuel economy. Unfortunately it got smashed after my neighbors truck was stolen (turns out I’m the only one of the street who locks my doors?) and I got an NC Miata, which I really enjoy, but as I get older, I really miss the practicality of the Fit and I’m considering getting another one in the future, it’s just a shame they stopped making them and the HR-V doesn’t even have the magic seats anymore :(

I'm solidly in the GenX cohort. First Honda was a used 83 Civic with 100k miles on it. Amazing car. I drove it till 205k. Replaced with a used 91 Civic that I really didn't love. I do like the newest Civic, esp. since it's available as a hatchback, and now a hybrid- but I kind of lost interest in Hondas in the middle/late 90's. They just didn't have a certain "magic" that early Hondas did, and the competition caught up somewhat. I had 4 different Mazdas, 2 new, 2 used, from about 2002 to 2017, and they were great. I should still be driving one, but alas life had different plans. Next car might be a Kia, Honda, or Mazda depending on what's available in '25/'26. I know they run till the end of time but I loathe Toyotas.
