I’m trying to find more information about descendants of Thomas (Potters) Peters. I’m a Nigerian with a last name Potters. My father said his grand father came John came is from Sierra Leone. Trying to make sense of the whole thing
@@YouGoLearn indeed lots of Krios took their expertise to Nigeria and worked in various fields, so many of us in Sierra Leone have parents that were born in Nigeria. My dad grew up in Lagos and could speak fluent Yoruba from all those years of secondary school in Lagos etc.
"Iyamide" is definitely of Yoruba origin, it simply means what we now call "Iyabo"... Both names mean "My mother is reincarnated" in the Yoruba language.
From her accent, you can tell she is a Nigerian. Possibly a grand child/great grand child of returnee Krios of Yoruba descent. a lot of the Krios who remembered their Yoruba heritage came back to Yoruba land ( Lagos) as far back as the late 1800. E.g the Macaulays, the Adams, Williams etc. Very notable names in Lagos.
I am actually Sierra Leonean but historically a lot of Krios are descendants of the "Liberated Africans" settled in Freetown the majority of whom were Yoruba. Krios tend to have Yoruba names as well as English.
There were actually more Yorubas than Igbos amongst the resettled "Liberated Africans" hence Krio culture is heavily skewed towards Yoruba. E.g the language food, traditions etc.
@@YouGoLearn Lots of Krio have Yoruba origin. This has nothing to do with Nigeria; they are not from Nigeria either, but Yorubas will always accept our relatives
Another point to make is that the Maroons of Jamaica were not fully African. They were mixed with the native people the inhibited the island. To some degree Sierra Leone has a Native American population.
My dad is from here and i was trying to tell him about this ❤❤
Iyamide - My mother has returned

Wow amazing i would love to help my dad is from the krio people
We’ve got Thomas in Gambia as well, they were descendants from Sierra Leone to Banjul
Interesting. I do know descendants of Thomas Peters. Is Potters a "corrupted" form of Peters?
You are a descendant of a Krio. You are a Saro in Nigeria now. Saros and Agudas( from Brazil) we’re the aristocrats of Lagos colony.

I did this narration without any script and as a slight correction it was the British Navy and not "Army" that rescued the 'Liberated Africans'.

@@okekechidi3377 The Yorubas remembered while the Igbos (who were as substantial as the Yoruba) among these Krios forgot their language and heritage

So the Krios don't have a designated tribe they belong to?
Krio is now an ethnic group/tribe in Sierra Leone.
We accept them as Yorubas, they're our families.
@@ObalufonThe "Saros" in Nigeria are what they called those 'Liberated Africans' who left Freetown and went to Nigeria. I guess you know some?
@Obalufon I actually heard that before too
There is an ethnic group in Sierra Leone called Krio.
Noo you are wrong krio people are from Nigeria 🇳🇬 yuroba tribe in Nigeria
No they are not. Stop making everything about Nigeria. You are going all over selling this lie on all Krio TH-cam videos.

Not ALL Maroons were mixed with Tainos.
@@michaelmaxwell2464 very true
So technically they are slaves who came back home . Just make it simple
No, they ended up in Freetown by different means
