Buying vinyl to collect but not listen is sad. The ability to listen to great artists and their performances who are long gone is amazing.

Totally. This is a level of collecting that is purely about acquiring the best versions one can, but not because you want to actually optimize your listening experience, but just because you can.

@@MrKelleyzinho iam not sure about that some people are just weird . My cousin would buy DVD movies and re releases just to have them sit next to her tv in a giant dvd collection case . When I came over she would let me open them up and watch them. She never seemed to mind , just wanted to have them . It is really sad some of this is never opened . Especially all the Coltrane records I would of play them all on the first day .

Well, our collection are personal endeavors. There is no wrong or right way to collect anything. A collection should make you happy, otherwise what would the point in collecting be? The only thing that bothers me is how the prices on the used market tend to sky rocket when one or two individuals are willing to spend anything for a specific copy. But, that's the nature of things, there's not much anyone can do.

Incredible stack but as others mention, it’s weird to see so many gems never played. One thing that I love about collecting music is that I’m able to play and enjoy it without it loosing all its value. Kinda like an art collection: every time I appreciate a painting or sculpture, I get some value from it but that value doesn’t go far and it’s still worth something if I ever (unlikely) wanted to sell it. This collector had some different priority’s but that’s okay.
Whatever the case, I wish we (not locals) could pick some of these up. Maybe I’ll have to tack a stop in Arizona onto my next road trip.

But looking through that massive pile there were so many albums missing that I would need to have. All those albums from my youth in the 80's that'll never get an audiophile release. Time and again I see people on YT recommending things because they are audiophile editions. I buy it myself, don't get me wrong. But I'll also buy a normal release for a few Euros if it's in tasty condition. And as for the no noise, vinyl thing. If you can't handle some crackles here n there, then vinyl is the wrong format for you. Disclaimer: thes preceding information reflects my personal opinions and as such should render me from being shot down in flames for daring to suggest that there are a lot of people listening to vinyl nowadays that really don't have a scooby about the format.

I own a shop in Berkeley, and have come across the best of the best over the last 10 years. I turned 60. I stopped keeping anything. I sell it all. Including my collection. As I often have said to folks that are having trouble parting with a collection I am making an offer on..."Do you want to die with this stuff"? I mean, I can't tell you how many collections I have bought from wives, sons, daughters, or a friend of the family. Generally they have no interest in the records at all and I am able to get a good price. They just want rid of the stuff. Another words, all that passion, all that diligence, all that back breaking digging on your knees is basically for not. I am lucky enough to be able to sell them to people who will enjoy them. So they do live on, but most likely not the way the collector had hoped or dreamed of. Last thing, you can also tell so much about the collector as you go through the records... Find secret love notes in the sleeves, polaroid photos of their secret lovers, the way they cared and stored the records also tell so much about them. I love records, but enjoy selling them to excited buyers more than collecting them in my living room. My favorite sound is the persons voice when they say out loud: this is a record I have been looking for for years.

I am planning to resell these and am wondering if I should attempt to remove the “LAST” sticker and risk damaging the label or just leave the sticker. I doubt the preservative improves the value, although the records are in mint condition, but am concerned how a buyer/collector will feel about the sticker itself and how it may affect resale value.

Just looking at the jazz titles, he had a lot of Blue Note and Prestige re-issues (some multiple copies). But I didn't see anything from CTI, ECM, EmArcy, Roulette, or some of the other popular classic labels, so I'm wondering how much he was actually into that genre. Also wondering what kind of audio gear he had.

My Father recently passed away and was a serious music collector for over 50 years and has I think just about every original release 45, he has demo 45s and actually even has wax tubes with recordings on them. He also has what looks like well over 100,000 other vinyl records, a collection of CDs which he has a local music store search high and low for specific CDs he bought weekly for years and he was constantly hunting for rare collector records. Even just the sleeves of they were available. Is there a professional collection valuator for records that I can have come down and give a value for his collection?

What I consider to be audiophile collection: High-quality recordings, high dynamic range, professional mixing. (See: Melodic Death Metal band Aether Realm's album _Tarot._ See heavy/power metal band Unleash the Archer's album _Apex._ Death/power metal band Wintersun's _Time I_ and _Winter Seasons._ power metal band Twilightning's _Delirium Veil._ Power metal band Stratovarius's album _Visions,_ progressive power metal band _Analogy's_ album _the Circle of Life._ )
What most other seem to consider an audiophile collection: Acoustic guitars with a focus on vocals. Classical music.
Oh, wait, is that an Exodus album? Never mind.

@06:33 The B52s and Wild Planet. I have both the MFSL pressings and the original WB pressings. The MFSL are NOT from the original masters, as the silver label will show. The original WB pressings sound warmer and fuller. The MFSL sound like they came from a CD. I was very disappointed.
