The "Reader's Digest" line has always been amusing to me. It ranks up there with some of the sillier lines Belladonna drops me the early-ish Anthrax records, like "clapping with one hand" and "one too many cookies." I've always thought a dash of humor was welcome. It's also one of the reasons I like Mike Muir from Suicidal Tendencies' lyrics as well.

Here's what Mustaine had to say about ToS' subject:
"'Tornado of Souls' was written the day I broke up with my fiancé; it explains what I went through, how I sprang out of it. I thought my existence was in that relationship - I was trapped in the eye of a tornado, and if I stepped out of line, I'd be blown to oblivion. No more whirlwind romances for me. If I do get back in that situation, I'm gonna be very aware now and check the weather before I get involved."
In my opinion it's still an interesting take on a break-up song, in part because it does have a bit more meaning than "I broke up with my ex" that you do admittedly see often. There's also a difference, for me, if you write a break-up song inspired by your girlfriend or boyfriend (which can still be done tastefully ofc, but with some artists it's like they're getting into relationships solely to break up and have writing material), a fiancé or fiancee (where you're already planning to get married which generally speaking means it's a more serious relationship than when you're just bf/gf, which can be either a prelude to something more serious or it can be entirely casual) or your wife/husband (where you're supposed to be a team but reasons for divorce may still be given, I imagine the betrayal you feel is greater than if it was a less committed relationship. Typically people have also spent more time together at this stage in a couple's relationship and that time may feel wasted).
Lastly I'd argue that, just because a subject has been done (or even overdone) by other artists, it doesn't mean that you can't have an interesting take on it (which ToS/Mustaine certainly does). Although it does make sense why people may be tired of hearing about it in music, so I don't blame anyone for not being excited about ToS' topic.
But in my opinion it's a noteworthy take on relationships and being careful of what you get into, especially for younger people who generally haven't yet found someone with whom to spend their lives but may make decisions that they'll regret later because, as Dave said, they didn't "check the weather". I believe with the above quote in mind, ToS does gain a lot in meaning, but it's rather unfortunate that you have to read this statement of Dave Mustaine in order to better appreciate the song (at least in my case, I gained more appreciation of the song's lyrics and the song in general after reading this quote on someone else's TH-cam comment). That being said, even if after all this, you still don't like ToS' subject, that's fine too. We all have different tastes and opinions, that's what makes us individual.
Sorry for the long comment 😅. I hope it was easy to understand.

Imho Mustaine has multiple strengths when it comes to writing lyrics, he can ofc do "political" very well, but he can also describe emotions very well, such as in "Angry Again" or "Recipe for Hate...Warhorse", "Dread and the Fugitive Mind", ofc also "Sweating Bullets", "Die Dead Enough". He has a very picturesque way of describing feelings even when the song isn't focused on an emotion like "Angry Again" is. I don't know how to better explain it but he really does make it easy for the listener to understand exactly what the song's narrator is feeling and even relate what he describes in his songs with one's own experiences.
And when I say "emotions/feelings" I don't mean just the basics (happiness sadness anger etc) but even more complicated ones such as (since the video is on "Sweating Bullets") in the line "Feeling claustrophobic like the walls are closing in". It's a bit like reading a book in a way.

    • @georged.5595
      @georged.5595 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

And to show this using the lyrics of another song, "Die Dead Enough" has many lines such as "The air's thick but the oxygen's thin" which, on one hand, shows the results of the narrator's overexertion -itself shown in the chorus "I can't punch hard enough (and I run/I can't kick high enough (and I run)" and so on- but on the other hand it shows also the narrator's panic - which is present in the song from the opening lines onward: "It's twilight and I wake up hot/my body's soaked in a cold, cold sweat" (here he also uses antithesis as a stylistic device, very nice).
So to sum up, in this one line alone he describes the way physical overexertion can feel and the way panic can feel.
I hope I was able to express my thoughts clearly.

Hello me, meet the real me and my misfits way of life
A dark, black past is my most valued possession
    Hindsight is always 20-20
But looking back, it's still a bit fuzzy
    Speak of mutually assured destruction
Nice story, tell it to Reader's Digest
Feeling paranoid, true enemy or false friend?
Anxiety's attacking me and my air is getting thin
I'm in trouble for the things I haven't got to yet
I'm chomping at the bit and my palms are getting wet
    Sweating bullets
    Hello me, it's me again
You can subdue, but never tame me
It gives me a migraine headache, sinking down to your level
Yeah, just keep on thinking it's my fault
And stay an inch or two out of kicking distance
Mankind has got to know his limitations
Feeling claustrophobic like the walls are closing in
Blood stains on my hands and I don't know where I've been
I'm in trouble for the things I haven't got to yet
I'm sharpening the axe and my palms are getting wet
    Sweating bullets
    I hear it in hear...
    Blood stains on my... hands
    The big axe...
    Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...
    Sweating, sweating
    Sweating, sweating
    Sweating, sweating
Well, me, it's nice talking to myself
    A credit to dementia
Some day, you too will know my pain
    And smile its "black-tooth grin"
If the war inside my head won't take a day off, I'll be dead
My icy fingers claw your back
    Here I come again
Feeling paranoid, true enemy or false friend?
Anxiety's attacking me, and my air is getting thin
Feeling claustrophobic like the walls are closing in
Blood stains on my hands and I don't know where I've been
Once you've committed me (Committed me)
Now you've acquitted me (Acquitted me)
    Claiming validity (Validity)
    For your stupidity (Stupidity)
    I'm chomping at the bit
    I'm sharpening the axe
Oh, here I come again, whoa!
    Sweating bullets

Not enough people appreciate the fact that Dave Mustaine is a character actor in his music. The other person who did this and had the same first name was David Bowie (Dave being Mustaine's nickname of course). Then there's Gary Numan, and I believe the Rolling Stones did a bit as well. I don't know of too many people doing this in metal and the fact that people criticize Mustaine's voice without getting this fact is simply mind boggling.

Dave has said this song was about his wife or girlfriend’s best friend who would flip out and loose it causing scenes and the next time he’d see her she’d act like nothing ever happened. Sinking down to your level it’s foolish to argue with someone who’s manic , first you’ve committed me (she says he’s crazy) now you’ve acquitted me ( the next time he sees her she’s normal) The anxiety of knowing you are going to have to deal with someone who you never know what state of mind they’re in . Sweating Bullets is not about Dave himself but a friend of his woman’s that he really didn’t look forward to spending time around.
