@@lifeingermany_ how is life then, if you are not able to live your life, when you can only sleep and work? We in germany live for our vacation and after the 2 or 3 weeks off, we counting the days to have another week or two off. I would die, if I hat NO TIME or only 10 days for me 😵
In the US, we don't even have a guaranteed amount of vacation time. White collar workers will get 10-15 days, but poor workers basically only get time off via unpaid days, which is obviously difficult.
I'm from Toronto and have lived abroad in Europe as well, and I always get asked the same question. My european friends can't understand why I prefer life on this side of the pond, but I agree with all of the points you made! I MUCH prefer the work/life balance here, I feel like I could never go back. It's so stress free in comparison and the proximity to so many other countries/cultures is priceless!
7:00 when I was still at the office in Munich I had to write down every day the time I came and the time I left into an Excel sheet, and it calculated the hours. Every month I printed the sheet and gave the paper to my supervisor and when the account had more than 50 hours more than I had to work, she said: "You need to take a day off or I will go to jail". Now THAT's what I call work-live-balance!!
I hear what ur saying here in Canada like the small towns if u do a job u can add extra hours if the company and staff dont care. In the night i should be working 10 hours but sometimes we work 6 or 8 hours but we put 10 hours instead they dont care.

Yes, by law, we couldn't work more than 10 hours a day and have to level it down to 8 hours a day in average over a 6 months' period. If you as an employee work longer hours than that, your boss is made responsible, as well. Of course, there are always bad bosses, who tell you to work more but only report 10 hours - but that should be a red flag for you and for you to start looking for a new job.
I am also a canadian who lives in Germany. OK, Iwe moved to Germany when I was 11 and now I am 66. I still am Canadian because I never wanted to give up my Canadian being. But I think Germany offers me a lot more. But on the other hand my "heart" is still canadian.
As someone who ditched Germany in favour of Canada and never looked back it has been interesting listening to the contrarian view. For me, Canada has worked better. There are many reasons that make Canada better, including some that you mentioned as a plus for Germany. It's personal perception. I grew up in Munich and left it for Southwestern Ontario.

6:42 To prove they have passion for that company... Worst thing is companies don't have same passion for their workers. As soon it is in their interest, no matter how hard working you are, they will give you layoff. It is nothing personal, it is just business for them.

@@lifeingermany_ Funny how you said that most Germans have 25 days vacation. I belive 24 days is the minimum by law, and most employees have at least 30 days or a few more. Plus you can have additional days of if you worked over time and have a plus on your "Stundenkonto"
@@matteloht I think it's just 20, but in reality, many, like myself get 30 days. Funnily enough, I personally could use more - in a normal year, not this one. A lot goes to covering parents ' birthdays and stuff like that 😁

Hey, Jenna great video as I'm also a Canadian from T.O. (born and raised) and have been in Europe since 1988, came over playing pro hockey in Austria,Italy,Switzerland and then in Germany. I can relate to a lot to what you've said in your Vlog but find Germany can be very different depending on where you live. I'm in the south in Bavaria which does has a different mentality to the north but what you mentioned about traffic is so true in T.O. was back 4 years ago and said this is crazy!!! I love the Autobahn feeling and traveling at 200 klicks and someone flashes their lights telling you to get over makes look like you're standing still......haha!!! I have two teenage Kids I have been there and done and it does get easier, so keep up the good work really enjoyed hearing our none Canadian accent again......LOL Cheers!!!
It was also my dream to live in Canada. Now after over 10 years in Canada (Alberta) I would love to move back to Europe. Just a few of the many reasons: food quality, progressiveness, democracy (Canada is not as democratic as you think), conservatism (love and support of oil and gas), general quality and cost for all items (appliances, clothing, food, restaurants, etc.), houses are very very bad (technology, built, design). I could go on but moving to Canada was one of my biggest mistakes. Sorry to say that.

I've really been leaned on by the non progressiveness of everything... It's not a strength... it's really a weakness of people emotionally dependent on someone to blame. Aafter it happens. I always wonder if it's better in Germany. If someone told me it was, I'd consider leaving 🙈 even if it was a lot more expensive. I could be biased but... I find most people are oilfield and drink too much. To be honest my standard of a person has dropped to... Do they touch Children... No .... Alright, guess there okay. But with the oilfield a surprising amount of people have DUI or drug issues, but... I'm surprised how far reaching this norm is. Although it is Alberta... There is either people that are conservative and gaslight random people traditionally or liberal people that gaslight conservatives. Is Germany the same way? I get really sad looking online to best quality of life countries and Canada is number 2... 😔

As you know I have watched your latest videos as I just found you a couple of weeks ago but I decided I am going to start from the beginning and"watch up" to catch up lol. BTW, Again I am an American from the state of Florida originally but sometimes I find great flight deals out of Toronto. My last flight out of Toronto cost me $303. 00 USD so it was with it to make my way to Toronto for sure. Great work Jenna. :).
I worked in Toronto for a while as a network engineer in a data center for a german software company back in 2017. I talked to a lot of locals during my stay and due to my experiences there I can confirm most of your statements.
I do not know if someone has already mentioned this, but when it comes to renting, it all depends on where you live. Yes, most places are cheaper to rent, but then you have Munich which had the highest prices for rent in Germany.
Would not agree! In Calana if you like yo have more vacation you take one more week off that is not paid. People are super friendly and so many cultures you can meet. Its much easier to start and run a business in Canada. So many opportunities you have in Canada that can not Compare to Europe. English as a language it's much easier. I moved from Europe to Canada and love it
You are spot on the points and all my feelings are similar, why is Canada so bad. I made a switch to Canada from Germany and I just can't wait to move back to Germany. Any small town is far better than any Good town/city is Germany. And Düsseldorf is beautiful!
Interesting! I grew up in France close to German border and move to Canada (Montreal) 10 years ago. Vacation starts at 15 days which is becoming more standard and with time/experience you can reach 20 days. Yes travelling takes time here as the country is big. However I find Canada more welcoming for visible minorities...better job and opportunities prospects
I also agree that Canada can be ALOT more welcoming! And that’s muuuuch better than 10 days! I should have moved to Montreal 🙈 not so far from Toronto!

YESSS.... TRUELY! IN THE BIG CITIES, TERRIBLE, CAN BE THE HELL! But I was in South of India, from Mumbai (Bombay earlier) down to Trivandrum to "Killkutta" (Calcutta) :-)). And I'm still living - and I fell in Love with India! Later I lived in Sri Lanka and it becomes my "second home*, but still I love India, too! But think: in India are around 1,400.000.000 People... Were should they go? :-)) Difficult, so many People, we only have ~ 82.000.000 ..that's nothing...;-) !

Indeed !! I've travelled in GTA a lot as a truck driver but outside of there for the most part in Canada, traffic is close to non existing. Beside the other major cities, that is.

Watching these German expat videos always makes me homesick (The family left Germany when I was 16) Yes it always shocks me how empty (sometimes) the 2 lane German highways are compared to the 16 lane 401. Talk about the North American grind , I took the train from Oakville to Union and worked on Bay Street - it's stressful. My wife and i took early retirement and are thinking of moving to Germany for 2-3 months. Düsseldorf is on the list, but so is the Stuttgart area. Anyways how's your German after 6 years. I am Canadian, live in California and travel in Europe. You are so right about the work life balance. In the US and Canada 10 days vacation when you start a job is pretty standard and you are made to feel you are lucky you have the job. There's so much consumerism that everyone has to work a lot to support their 'retail fix' habits.
I know 😭♥️ it wasn’t my choice haha. My husbands family are all living in Düsseldorf, and he found a great job opportunity back in DUS. I constantly miss Freiburg though!
My husband is Canadian, I am from northern Germany, and we live in beautiful Bavaria. So many people here think we are crazy for not living in Canada! I studied there (in Saskatchewan, of all places), went back to Germany to finish my degree, and my then boyfriend came to Germany to "learn the language and get to know the culture, for maybe 6 months." That was, um, in 2000. We're still here :) For exactly the reasons you are describing. You put it perfectly: Canada is nicer to travel to, while Germany is a better place to live. We frequently spend summers in Saskatchewan and Ontario, which is wonderful. I would add two things to your list: WAY better healthcare system (which we have needed many times here), and (this might sound petty) - the houses! Every time we are in Canada I feel like there is no privacy, lol. I can hear my inlaws talking in their bedroom on the other end of the house, my kids giggling in the bedroom next to us. Paper thin "walls" and ceilings, and no outside shutters that block light and heat - our kids woke up all the damn time when they were little. It was hard for them to nap or sleep longer than my early riser mother-in-law, because they were used to sleeping in the dark and quiet. (My husband on the other hand, can sleep through ANYTHING, especially through his alarm...) We stayed in a condo for a while, and our neighbours' kitchen was on the other side of our bedroom. We could hear them opening and closing every cupboard, and could have joined in their conversation. I am a very light sleeper, so that sucked. Bathrooms without windows, even if you have an outside wall in that bathroom - I don't get it. It was so bad at my inlaws house (3 bathrooms with outside walls, none with windows, and they designed the house themselves!), that they finally put a fan in the wall for some fresh air. I love spending the summer in Canada (obviously not this summer, because of corona), but coming back to our pretty standard, but new and modern house here in Bavaria always feels so good :)
shadowlands ahhhh I couldn’t agree more! Great points to mention for sure! I also LOVE summers back home in Ontario 🥰 with my family up in cottage country! But it’s vacation, right? So beautiful, but not daily life! PS. Bavaria even gives you the beauty nature that Canada has so even less of a culture shock! I LOVE Bavaria sooo much!

And everything is soooo expensive here in Canada but I thank the gods that I don't live or work in Toronto anymore!! And the food in Germany is soooo much better especially the baked goods (Esp. Broetchen), sausages and cheese, great beer (and cheap), great white wines, cheap imported (and drinkable) red wines. We have a property on Lake Huron BUT with taxes and everything, it is expensive. I think I should have stayed in Germany for its better food and lifestyle especially now after unification. And this summer has been a scorcher in the great SW Ontario. I worked in Africa, South and Central America including near the Amazon in Brazil and the heatwaves in SW Ontario exceed anything over there! I can remember doing a geotech investigation in downtown Toronto and the thermometer on one of the building read 105 degrees F (40 degrees C). We had to quit because we couldn't keep hydrated and the men were burning their hands on the steel drills and rods. And we do work far too long and too late!! There was a really big influx of Germans into Canada following WW2 in the 50s and 60s but did you know that 1/3 of them did not stay with most returning to Germany and some moving elsewhere. We have a beautiful country but with our limited vacation time most of us won't have the time to see it until we retire and then most of us won't be able to afford to travel!! Canada is no paradise!!
Hey Otto, there are also very good red wines here in Germany, no need to switch to those from Italy, France or elsewhere. Me for example, I always buy the Dornfelder red one, excellent taste and rather cheap !
@@MultiScooter63 When I lived in Germany the white wines were very good (I have relatives in Rheinland Pfalz, the Ruhr, Ost Friesland actually everywhere except Bayern! My father's family were Ost Preussen) and the red wines were terrible. My cousin and I would buy Hungarian red wine (bulls blood) because it was cheap. I don't recall the Dornfelder red or my relatives suggesting it to me. I will look for It when I return!!
Fun fact: I've seen more Canadian nature while vacationing from the Netherlands than while been living in the country itself (since the last 16 years).
The way I understand it as a European - if you have to stay after your working hours to finish something, you have terrible time management skills and therefore - you're a bad employee. Also, if you work when you should rest, you will be less productive the next day and your employer doesn't really gain anything from making you work long hours. The only people who are allowed to work more than they should are the business owners.

@@capry187 It is impossible to comprise this list with any real accuracy. Canada is the second largest land mass country in the world. Where the video creator is from is over 4300 km away from where I live and our climate is very different. The people are very different. Our cost of living is very different and the provincial politics differ region to region. Her opinion is very specific to Toronto. She should be speaking as a Torontonian not as a Canadian. It's fairly impossible to draw a fully comprehensive view of the entire country. Canada's land mass is 10 million square km. Germany's land mass is about 350,000 square km. The province I'm from (BC) is over 950,000 square km just by itself it is about 3 times the size of Germany. Her opinions are purely anecdotal and should be taken with a large grain of salt from anyone not from Canada.
Thank you for a most interesting perspective on german culture and society! I lived in Toronto 30 years ago and it was brutal! Even then, to rent a house, my friend's family and mine had to share. Also, Canada and Russia are the two country with the highest temperature variations between summer and winter.
Finished school in Onterrible or maybe worst case Ontario 😂 Just picked up a few jokes when I was in Alberta 😂 I'm a German and I want to immigrate to Canada since I'm a little child. I really hope there's not too much disappointment in this video for me, but since I've lived there a couple times already, I think I'm prepared for the most part 😃 Happy that you like it here in Germany though :)
In Germany, we have a minimum of 24 vacations days per year by law. Depending on your job experience or on how long you were with the company, you get more days even. Usually, the number of days is capped at 30 days a year, but I also already heard of 40 days (but that's rather a rare exception). Also, for most of the jobs, also by law, there is a restriction of working hours at 40 hours a week (there are a few exceptions, though). For many, working below manager level, the overtime is paid, for which you can choose, whether you want to get a paid-out for those or top up your vacation time. On top of that, we also have paid sick-leave. Fully paid even for six weeks in a row. After that, you're still getting paid, but at a lower ratio. So, no need to use up your vacation days for that.

Can we talk about the German education system tho? (Secondary). When we first moved to Germany my daughter was placed almost 3 YEARS behind because she couldn’t speak the language (please keep in mind that she was 15 when we moved) and they decided to move here from grade 10 to grade 8. She was surrounded by 12/ 13 year olds and at first there was no problem, she never said it bothered her until we had to get her into therapy because she had an anxiety attack at school. When the therapist asked her what she doesn’t like about Germany she said the school system is so different from the one in Canada! And it is! We had to move back because it got to the point where she could no longer focus and her motivation was nonexistent! Just keep in mind that germany has a very VERY different school system compared to the one in the us/Canada. Inform yourself before moving your children there please!
It's really funny, sometimes you need to hear the opinion from a 'stranger/not anymore stranger' to actually be able to see the good sides of Germany again. I never thought there are countries with less than 30 days vacation in a year except for maybe Asian countries and that housing is affordable. I've been to Australia before and I was shocked how cheap it is to rent a full house there in the country side. Of course there are many cheap places here, too but especially Düsseldorf/Ruhrpott is expensive. Maybe not for a working couple but singles are struggling everywhere. But hey, it's okay. A lot of the free days are company/state dependent. At a job I had to hold for a while, even though it was EU, we were working 12 hour days, 6 days a week, with hardly any breaks. They did pay us a lot of overtime, but one can imagine that all the vacation days were used as sickness leaves, as sickness leaves would result in termination. It depends on the company and their ability to manage it’s workforce. We cost the company more than double what hiring more employees would, and still they could not get new workers onboard.
Most ppl i know work extra hours work their butts off have burnout syndrom etc i dont like the work life balance at all ....especially if you dont have a fancy job
The food here in Germany is so much cheaper than in Canada unfortunately also has a downside! This downside affects the keeping and slaughter of our livestock. Since the large food discounters more or less dictate the prices at which they buy fish, meat, etc. from the farmers, there has been a downward spiral in food prices for several years. This is additionally fueled by the almost ruinous price competition among discounters. So, yes you are right, the prices are significantly lower here than in Canada, but unfortunately that is at the expense of animal welfare and the environment. Nevertheless, your video is very entertaining again. thumbs up
You’re absolutely right 😔... though I have to say... being a vegetarian for 15 years in Canada, I never found affordable alternatives to meat that were ready made (as a Uni student this was very important for me). In Germany though, the plant based meats are actually sometimes even cheaper than the normal meat!! I find in Canada, they over price it for this expensive “hipster culture” which is unfortunate
Love watching your video's. I am living in The Netherlands (actually around 20 minutes from where you were camp-site in Heemskerk). I visited Canada numerous times (mostly BC and AB). I do find Canada a beautiful country for visiting, but for me I love living in Europe. So many different cultures so easy to travel around and so much history. People prefer Canada over Germany because Canada provide PR option Canadian infrastructure and lifestyle based on USA while Germany have typical European infrastructure and lifestyle Both are Beautiful country.

After this I'll be an Au pair in Germany for a year and am so looking forward to it. For people wanting to know a little more about Canada I am from Saskatchewan where cities are small. The rural area is very affordable you can buy a small house for 25 thousand. I worked in healthcare where you can bank time to have more holidays. There are some jobs that work 12 hour shifts and then you have more days to do as you wish. There are so many jobs! However our winters are brutal.
Also when I have visited family in Toronto I'm a tad overwhelmed by the lifestyle it's so busy and seems like a chore to get your kids to all the places they need to be.

As a child I actually asked myself, am I happy here or would i prefer to be somewhere else, in a different country? It was not my personal achivement or fault to be born in Germany. And I thought about it. Then I had my answer: I'm fine. Later, we can see that a lot of people would want to live here. I guess, they came to the same result as 8 year old me.

Its kind of funny, I hate the fact that there are so many languages around germany (especially as someone who has a real hard time learning even the most simple phrases - don't be fooled by my english, it took me over 2 decades of constant usage to get here...). Whenever I am in Belgium or the Netherlands (which I am quite often) I feel awkward that everyone has to speak english (or german) to me. And before the culture argument comes along: I think germany itself proves, that people can speak the same language while still having VERY different cultures. I had a big culture shock when I visited Bavaria for the first time (although some might argue that Bavarians don't actually speak german :P) Had to chuckle a bit when you said "rules and regulations are changing constantly" - THAT ONE even hits people born here sometimes unexpected, since the flow of information here, especially concerning regulations is absolutely shitty. Some regulations are even actively hidden and you have to sue in order to get a copy, since the institutions won't just hand them out when asked (although thats rare).
Not to take anything away from your 'reasons' but I think you love living in Germany because your husband is there. If he were to relocate to Canada I am sure you will love to live in Canada.
I know I would love living in Canada again 🥰 and I love being here for my husband, yes! But there are definitely many positives to living in Germany. In all honesty, if I didn’t have my husband... I’d probably move to Austria (I find the general population to be a bit more like Canadians haha)
Canada is a beautiful country, but for me only in late Spring, summer and early Autumn, I do not like late Autumn, winter or early Spring and that is my problem with Canada, too cold.
I always worked in industry and had atleast 30 days vacation. since 9 years iam on shift 365 days a year early late and night like 2-3 earlie 2 late 2 night 2-3 days off. make averange of 38h a week. because of the shifting i have additional 7-8 vacation days.
@@sefyue the minimum by law is 20 days in a 5 day a week Job and 24 in a 6 days a week job. I work on holydays and weekends and even while you all celebrate new year. I guess its fair to have some extra days. In industrial companies 30 days a year is common

Interesting content.. also an expat and currently in the culture shock stage, im sure you know what i mean😆 moved here because of my husband although my previous life and career was a really huge sacrifice to give up.. so yes, i moved for love. Here in Australia, most people working permanent full- or part-time get 20 working days per year. In many cases, we also get paid a 17.5% salary loading for the holiday/vacation period. This was originally for all workers in the aforementioned categories, but since then, some unions have traded that off for other benefits. The only people who don't get paid leave at all are what we call casual workers, who only get paid by the hour, although they get a higher hourly amount to offset the lack of vacation/holiday pay. To top it off, we also get long service leave, ie three months paid leave for working for the same employer for ten years. If we keep working for that same employer, we receive an extra month for every three years as long service leave. This does not, however, get paid with the previously-mentioned loading.

I agree with almost everything you said apart from the summer temperatures in Germany. I also live in Düsseldorf and the summers are unbareable! The temperatures are never below 29 degrees and most times its between 30 to 40 degrees. It always hot and sticky with barely no wind blowing. A real nightmare! I can understand you thinking its lovely if you experienced worse summers in Canada but the summer here is sinply aweful!! That said great video!

Agree on all you said, however: I'd think about Canada as a potential alternative place to live there rather than the USA , because the Canadians are very sympathic - i.e. the music scene: Rush, Nelly Furtado, Alannis Morisette, Joni Mitchell and many more. Or also the movie or comedy scene like the popular 'Just for Laughs Gags' series known from TH-cam, and also many long distance flights (shot mostly in Quebec and Montréal, here every victim had quite some fun - no matter if a member of the black or asian community) - or also the very funny Kenny vs. Spenny series, or the Orphan Black seasons (5 meanwhile) etc. etc. ; but I think I wil stay in Germany for all those reasons you highlighted already. So welcome to my country !!!
Also a Canadian living in Germany for the past 2.5 years... and I cannot count anymore how many times someone has said to me "What?! You're Canadian but you're living in Germany, why would you do that to yourself?" haha it's the most confusing and, tbh, exhausting question. In the US, we don't even have a guaranteed amount of vacation time. White collar workers will get 10-15 days, but poor workers basically only get time off via unpaid days, which is obviously difficult.
If you are in shock, you should know in Mexico, we only have 6 days of vacation (+10 holidays) this is the moment when you can cherish your vacation.
I'm from Toronto and have lived abroad in Europe as well, and I always get asked the same question. My european friends can't understand why I prefer life on this side of the pond, but I agree with all of the points you made! I MUCH prefer the work/life balance here, I feel like I could never go back. It's so stress free in comparison and the proximity to so many other countries/cultures is priceless!
7:00 when I was still at the office in Munich I had to write down every day the time I came and the time I left into an Excel sheet, and it calculated the hours. Every month I printed the sheet and gave the paper to my supervisor and when the account had more than 50 hours more than I had to work, she said: "You need to take a day off or I will go to jail". Now THAT's what I call work-live-balance!!
I hear what ur saying here in Canada like the small towns if u do a job u can add extra hours if the company and staff dont care. In the night i should be working 10 hours but sometimes we work 6 or 8 hours but we put 10 hours instead they dont care.

Yep same here, our boss gets a bit shirty when the Überstunden reaches a certain level, it’s then a case of “ can you take a day off or go earlier ?”
Yes, by law, we couldn't work more than 10 hours a day and have to level it down to 8 hours a day in average over a 6 months' period. If you as an employee work longer hours than that, your boss is made responsible, as well.
Of course, there are always bad bosses, who tell you to work more but only report 10 hours - but that should be a red flag for you and for you to start looking for a new job.
I am also a canadian who lives in Germany. OK, Iwe moved to Germany when I was 11 and now I am 66. I still am Canadian because I never wanted to give up my Canadian being. But I think Germany offers me a lot more. But on the other hand my "heart" is still canadian.

As someone who ditched Germany in favour of Canada and never looked back it has been interesting listening to the contrarian view. For me, Canada has worked better. There are many reasons that make Canada better, including some that you mentioned as a plus for Germany. It's personal perception. I grew up in Munich and left it for Southwestern Ontario.

Hey, Jenna great video as I'm also a Canadian from T.O. (born and raised) and have been in Europe since 1988, came over playing pro hockey in Austria,Italy,Switzerland and then in Germany. I can relate to a lot to what you've said in your Vlog but find Germany can be very different depending on where you live. I'm in the south in Bavaria which does has a different mentality to the north but what you mentioned about traffic is so true in T.O. was back 4 years ago and said this is crazy!!! I love the Autobahn feeling and traveling at 200 klicks and someone flashes their lights telling you to get over makes look like you're standing still......haha!!! I have two teenage Kids I have been there and done and it does get easier, so keep up the good work really enjoyed hearing our none Canadian accent again......LOL Cheers!!!

It was also my dream to live in Canada. Now after over 10 years in Canada (Alberta) I would love to move back to Europe. Just a few of the many reasons: food quality, progressiveness, democracy (Canada is not as democratic as you think), conservatism (love and support of oil and gas), general quality and cost for all items (appliances, clothing, food, restaurants, etc.), houses are very very bad (technology, built, design). I could go on but moving to Canada was one of my biggest mistakes. Sorry to say that.

I've really been leaned on by the non progressiveness of everything... It's not a strength... it's really a weakness of people emotionally dependent on someone to blame. Aafter it happens. I always wonder if it's better in Germany. If someone told me it was, I'd consider leaving 🙈 even if it was a lot more expensive. I could be biased but... I find most people are oilfield and drink too much. To be honest my standard of a person has dropped to... Do they touch Children... No .... Alright, guess there okay. But with the oilfield a surprising amount of people have DUI or drug issues, but... I'm surprised how far reaching this norm is. Although it is Alberta... There is either people that are conservative and gaslight random people traditionally or liberal people that gaslight conservatives. Is Germany the same way? I get really sad looking online to best quality of life countries and Canada is number 2... 😔

BTW, Again I am an American from the state of Florida originally but sometimes I find great flight deals out of Toronto. My last flight out of Toronto cost me $303. 00 USD so it was with it to make my way to Toronto for sure. Great work Jenna. :).
I worked in Toronto for a while as a network engineer in a data center for a german software company back in 2017. I talked to a lot of locals during my stay and due to my experiences there I can confirm most of your statements.
I do not know if someone has already mentioned this, but when it comes to renting, it all depends on where you live. Yes, most places are cheaper to rent, but then you have Munich which had the highest prices for rent in Germany.

Interesting! I grew up in France close to German border and move to Canada (Montreal) 10 years ago. Vacation starts at 15 days which is becoming more standard and with time/experience you can reach 20 days. Yes travelling takes time here as the country is big. However I find Canada more welcoming for visible minorities...better job and opportunities prospects

Traffic in and around Toronto is a dimension of it's own and hardly comparable to any other place
of course because people flock from all over the GTA and even further to work in TO. There are already over 3 million in TO, over 6 million in the GTA, and even more if you add other surrounding areas. On top of that most immigrants choose the GTA
Indeed !! I've travelled in GTA a lot as a truck driver but outside of there for the most part in Canada, traffic is close to non existing. Beside the other major cities, that is.

Watching these German expat videos always makes me homesick (The family left Germany when I was 16) Yes it always shocks me how empty (sometimes) the 2 lane German highways are compared to the 16 lane 401. Talk about the North American grind , I took the train from Oakville to Union and worked on Bay Street - it's stressful. My wife and i took early retirement and are thinking of moving to Germany for 2-3 months. Düsseldorf is on the list, but so is the Stuttgart area. Anyways how's your German after 6 years. I am Canadian, live in California and travel in Europe. You are so right about the work life balance. In the US and Canada 10 days vacation when you start a job is pretty standard and you are made to feel you are lucky you have the job. There's so much consumerism that everyone has to work a lot to support their 'retail fix' habits.

My husband is Canadian, I am from northern Germany, and we live in beautiful Bavaria. So many people here think we are crazy for not living in Canada! I studied there (in Saskatchewan, of all places), went back to Germany to finish my degree, and my then boyfriend came to Germany to "learn the language and get to know the culture, for maybe 6 months." That was, um, in 2000. We're still here :) For exactly the reasons you are describing. You put it perfectly: Canada is nicer to travel to, while Germany is a better place to live. We frequently spend summers in Saskatchewan and Ontario, which is wonderful. I would add two things to your list: WAY better healthcare system (which we have needed many times here), and (this might sound petty) - the houses! Every time we are in Canada I feel like there is no privacy, lol. I can hear my inlaws talking in their bedroom on the other end of the house, my kids giggling in the bedroom next to us. Paper thin "walls" and ceilings, and no outside shutters that block light and heat - our kids woke up all the damn time when they were little. It was hard for them to nap or sleep longer than my early riser mother-in-law, because they were used to sleeping in the dark and quiet. (My husband on the other hand, can sleep through ANYTHING, especially through his alarm...) We stayed in a condo for a while, and our neighbours' kitchen was on the other side of our bedroom. We could hear them opening and closing every cupboard, and could have joined in their conversation. I am a very light sleeper, so that sucked. Bathrooms without windows, even if you have an outside wall in that bathroom - I don't get it. It was so bad at my inlaws house (3 bathrooms with outside walls, none with windows, and they designed the house themselves!), that they finally put a fan in the wall for some fresh air. I love spending the summer in Canada (obviously not this summer, because of corona), but coming back to our pretty standard, but new and modern house here in Bavaria always feels so good :)

And everything is soooo expensive here in Canada but I thank the gods that I don't live or work in Toronto anymore!! And the food in Germany is soooo much better especially the baked goods (Esp. Broetchen), sausages and cheese, great beer (and cheap), great white wines, cheap imported (and drinkable) red wines. We have a property on Lake Huron BUT with taxes and everything, it is expensive. I think I should have stayed in Germany for its better food and lifestyle especially now after unification. And this summer has been a scorcher in the great SW Ontario. I worked in Africa, South and Central America including near the Amazon in Brazil and the heatwaves in SW Ontario exceed anything over there! I can remember doing a geotech investigation in downtown Toronto and the thermometer on one of the building read 105 degrees F (40 degrees C). We had to quit because we couldn't keep hydrated and the men were burning their hands on the steel drills and rods. And we do work far too long and too late!!
There was a really big influx of Germans into Canada following WW2 in the 50s and 60s but did you know that 1/3 of them did not stay with most returning to Germany and some moving elsewhere. We have a beautiful country but with our limited vacation time most of us won't have the time to see it until we retire and then most of us won't be able to afford to travel!! Canada is no paradise!!

Hey Otto, there are also very good red wines here in Germany, no need to switch to those from Italy, France or elsewhere. Me for example, I always buy the Dornfelder red one, excellent taste and rather cheap !
@@MultiScooter63 When I lived in Germany the white wines were very good (I have relatives in Rheinland Pfalz, the Ruhr, Ost Friesland actually everywhere except Bayern! My father's family were Ost Preussen) and the red wines were terrible. My cousin and I would buy Hungarian red wine (bulls blood) because it was cheap. I don't recall the Dornfelder red or my relatives suggesting it to me. I will look for It when I return!!

Fun fact: I've seen more Canadian nature while vacationing from the Netherlands than while been living in the country itself (since the last 16 years).
The way I understand it as a European - if you have to stay after your working hours to finish something, you have terrible time management skills and therefore - you're a bad employee. Also, if you work when you should rest, you will be less productive the next day and your employer doesn't really gain anything from making you work long hours. The only people who are allowed to work more than they should are the business owners.

@@capry187 It is impossible to comprise this list with any real accuracy. Canada is the second largest land mass country in the world. Where the video creator is from is over 4300 km away from where I live and our climate is very different. The people are very different. Our cost of living is very different and the provincial politics differ region to region. Her opinion is very specific to Toronto. She should be speaking as a Torontonian not as a Canadian. It's fairly impossible to draw a fully comprehensive view of the entire country. Canada's land mass is 10 million square km. Germany's land mass is about 350,000 square km. The province I'm from (BC) is over 950,000 square km just by itself it is about 3 times the size of Germany. Her opinions are purely anecdotal and should be taken with a large grain of salt from anyone not from Canada.

Thank you for a most interesting perspective on german culture and society! I lived in Toronto 30 years ago and it was brutal! Even then, to rent a house, my friend's family and mine had to share. Also, Canada and Russia are the two country with the highest temperature variations between summer and winter.

Don’t move from Germany!
In Germany, we have a minimum of 24 vacations days per year by law. Depending on your job experience or on how long you were with the company, you get more days even. Usually, the number of days is capped at 30 days a year, but I also already heard of 40 days (but that's rather a rare exception). Also, for most of the jobs, also by law, there is a restriction of working hours at 40 hours a week (there are a few exceptions, though). For many, working below manager level, the overtime is paid, for which you can choose, whether you want to get a paid-out for those or top up your vacation time.
On top of that, we also have paid sick-leave. Fully paid even for six weeks in a row. After that, you're still getting paid, but at a lower ratio. So, no need to use up your vacation days for that.
Sounds very similar to Australia. We get 4 weeks (I think 28 days) every year if you are part time or full time

Can we talk about the German education system tho? (Secondary). When we first moved to Germany my daughter was placed almost 3 YEARS behind because she couldn’t speak the language (please keep in mind that she was 15 when we moved) and they decided to move here from grade 10 to grade 8. She was surrounded by 12/ 13 year olds and at first there was no problem, she never said it bothered her until we had to get her into therapy because she had an anxiety attack at school. When the therapist asked her what she doesn’t like about Germany she said the school system is so different from the one in Canada! And it is! We had to move back because it got to the point where she could no longer focus and her motivation was nonexistent! Just keep in mind that germany has a very VERY different school system compared to the one in the us/Canada. Inform yourself before moving your children there please!

It's really funny, sometimes you need to hear the opinion from a 'stranger/not anymore stranger' to actually be able to see the good sides of Germany again. I never thought there are countries with less than 30 days vacation in a year except for maybe Asian countries and that housing is affordable. I've been to Australia before and I was shocked how cheap it is to rent a full house there in the country side. Of course there are many cheap places here, too but especially Düsseldorf/Ruhrpott is expensive. Maybe not for a working couple but singles are struggling everywhere. But hey, it's okay. Happy you like it here 🙂 Germany is a very diverse country and it's because it's you great people 👍🙃

A lot of the free days are company/state dependent. At a job I had to hold for a while, even though it was EU, we were working 12 hour days, 6 days a week, with hardly any breaks. They did pay us a lot of overtime, but one can imagine that all the vacation days were used as sickness leaves, as sickness leaves would result in termination. It depends on the company and their ability to manage it’s workforce. We cost the company more than double what hiring more employees would, and still they could not get new workers onboard.
Most ppl i know work extra hours work their butts off have burnout syndrom etc i dont like the work life balance at all ....especially if you dont have a fancy job

The food here in Germany is so much cheaper than in Canada unfortunately also has a downside! This downside affects the keeping and slaughter of our livestock. Since the large food discounters more or less dictate the prices at which they buy fish, meat, etc. from the farmers, there has been a downward spiral in food prices for several years. This is additionally fueled by the almost ruinous price competition among discounters. So, yes you are right, the prices are significantly lower here than in Canada, but unfortunately that is at the expense of animal welfare and the environment. Nevertheless, your video is very entertaining again. thumbs up
You’re absolutely right 😔... though I have to say... being a vegetarian for 15 years in Canada, I never found affordable alternatives to meat that were ready made (as a Uni student this was very important for me). In Germany though, the plant based meats are actually sometimes even cheaper than the normal meat!! I find in Canada, they over price it for this expensive “hipster culture” which is unfortunate

Love watching your video's. I am living in The Netherlands (actually around 20 minutes from where you were camp-site in Heemskerk). I visited Canada numerous times (mostly BC and AB). I do find Canada a beautiful country for visiting, but for me I love living in Europe. So many different cultures so easy to travel around and so much history. Keep up the good work making awesome video's.

After this I'll be an Au pair in Germany for a year and am so looking forward to it. For people wanting to know a little more about Canada I am from Saskatchewan where cities are small. The rural area is very affordable you can buy a small house for 25 thousand. I worked in healthcare where you can bank time to have more holidays. There are some jobs that work 12 hour shifts and then you have more days to do as you wish. There are so many jobs! However our winters are brutal.
Also when I have visited family in Toronto I'm a tad overwhelmed by the lifestyle it's so busy and seems like a chore to get your kids to all the places they need to be.
From Krefelder to Düsseldorfer. We both know its the best region in germany to live in :)

As a child I actually asked myself, am I happy here or would i prefer to be somewhere else, in a different country? It was not my personal achivement or fault to be born in Germany. And I thought about it. Then I had my answer: I'm fine.
Later, we can see that a lot of people would want to live here. I guess, they came to the same result as 8 year old me.

Its kind of funny, I hate the fact that there are so many languages around germany (especially as someone who has a real hard time learning even the most simple phrases - don't be fooled by my english, it took me over 2 decades of constant usage to get here...).
Whenever I am in Belgium or the Netherlands (which I am quite often) I feel awkward that everyone has to speak english (or german) to me. And before the culture argument comes along: I think germany itself proves, that people can speak the same language while still having VERY different cultures. I had a big culture shock when I visited Bavaria for the first time (although some might argue that Bavarians don't actually speak german :P)
Had to chuckle a bit when you said "rules and regulations are changing constantly" - THAT ONE even hits people born here sometimes unexpected, since the flow of information here, especially concerning regulations is absolutely shitty. Some regulations are even actively hidden and you have to sue in order to get a copy, since the institutions won't just hand them out when asked (although thats rare).
Not to take anything away from your 'reasons' but I think you love living in Germany because your husband is there. If he were to relocate to Canada I am sure you will love to live in Canada.
I know I would love living in Canada again 🥰 and I love being here for my husband, yes! But there are definitely many positives to living in Germany. In all honesty, if I didn’t have my husband... I’d probably move to Austria (I find the general population to be a bit more like Canadians haha)

Lol here in INDIA we get 18days holiday leave + including mandatory holidays you can add 15 days more in total.
Canada is a beautiful country, but for me only in late Spring, summer and early Autumn, I do not like late Autumn, winter or early Spring and that is my problem with Canada, too cold.
I always worked in industry and had atleast 30 days vacation. since 9 years iam on shift 365 days a year early late and night like 2-3 earlie 2 late 2 night 2-3 days off. make averange of 38h a week. because of the shifting i have additional 7-8 vacation days.

I work on holydays and weekends and even while you all celebrate new year.
I guess its fair to have some extra days.

Here in Australia, most people working permanent full- or part-time get 20 working days per year. In many cases, we also get paid a 17.5% salary loading for the holiday/vacation period. This was originally for all workers in the aforementioned categories, but since then, some unions have traded that off for other benefits. The only people who don't get paid leave at all are what we call casual workers, who only get paid by the hour, although they get a higher hourly amount to offset the lack of vacation/holiday pay. To top it off, we also get long service leave, ie three months paid leave for working for the same employer for ten years. If we keep working for that same employer, we receive an extra month for every three years as long service leave. This does not, however, get paid with the previously-mentioned loading.

I agree with almost everything you said apart from the summer temperatures in Germany. I also live in Düsseldorf and the summers are unbareable! The temperatures are never below 29 degrees and most times its between 30 to 40 degrees. It always hot and sticky with barely no wind blowing. A real nightmare! I can understand you thinking its lovely if you experienced worse summers in Canada but the summer here is sinply aweful!! That said great video!

Agree on all you said, however: I'd think about Canada as a potential alternative place to live there rather than the USA , because the Canadians are very sympathic - i.e. the music scene: Rush, Nelly Furtado, Alannis Morisette, Joni Mitchell and many more. Or also the movie or comedy scene like the popular 'Just for Laughs Gags' series known from TH-cam, and also many long distance flights (shot mostly in Quebec and Montréal, here every victim had quite some fun - no matter if a member of the black or asian community) - or also the very funny Kenny vs. Spenny series, or the Orphan Black seasons (5 meanwhile) etc. etc. ; but I think I wil stay in Germany for all those reasons you highlighted already. So welcome to my country !!!
