Before we start writing, we need to know who our writing is for and what we want it to accomplish. Writing is a useful tool, but it has to be adjusted to fit the purpose a piece has. In this episode, Dr. Emily Zarka discusses different forms of writing and what purposes they serve.

“The mind on the other end of our writing is doing their own work with what they read… They’ll still bring their own interpretation to the experience.” I love this because most people don’t realize how often their words are misinterpreted or vise versa. Employers should really teach this to any employee that has to communicate often through email and/or text.

Unfortunately, I noticed a couple typos in the captions. Such as, at 3:33 it says "readiness communication" instead of "writing as communication." This is a shame, but I am glad that at least there are captions.

TIL that the “definitely true story” I was told of how my college’s library “had bricks pop out of the walls because the architects had forgotten to account for the weight of the books” is probably an urban legend. Good to know! The main point about considering purpose and audience is important too, and well-expressed, but the bricks thing probably made the strongest impression.
About being able to speak Bird, or at the very least understand them - have you tried either 1) tasting the blood of a dragon, 2) earning a mother bird’s gratitude by saving her children, or 3) having your father, the count, so despair of your ever learning anything that he sends you away from home to study with three wise men? I believe these are the traditional methods.

    fabulous content
    off-point
the parental-driven book ban reproaches... means some libraries are "sinking" --and will not be serving their purpose

Besides school or work, what is the most common type of writing you do? (Ex: Texts communicating with friends/family, journaling, social media posts)
