i can absolutely agree i have played for less than two years but have mastered things such as sweep picking economy picking alternate picking, even a bit of music theory. It all has humble beginnings but thanks to technology we can learn so much quicker. Pinch harmonics were too much to even think of but now it’s nothing.
Very bad anolgy pardon me. With your analogy when the next cup fills the previous one is dried up. And actually true, you'll start to forget the previous skill if you only focus on one skill now. It is always best to keep filling all the cups with frequent rotation drop by drop. Learning one skill at a time and mastering it will only serve for the boasting purposes. Sorry bro.
It's not about only ever focusing on one skill at a time. It's about using your time most productively to actually achieve progress instead of spreading your valuable practice time so thin you never actually improve in any one area . You don't forget everything you learned before, because everything should build off of the previous conceptual understanding. Perhaps a better analogy would be building a skyscraper--start at the ground, and focus on just one floor at a time.
