As a self taught guitarist who will soon finish his second year of playing I have to disagree in some points: 1) gear doesn't matter and you can actually learn everything on an acoustic, but gear can help you stay motivated. There is no point in learning slipknot songs on an acoustic, when the sole reason for you wanting to learn the guitar is this kind of music in the first place. Just make sure the gear is not overly expensive 2) preventing bad habits is important, but it is more important to keep playing. It is better to learn new things in a wrong way than not starting because of the fear of learning something wrong. Everything can be relearned later on, it just takes more practice and time to correct bad habits. Just do your best to prevent bad habits and everything will be fine Keep on rocking

I’ve been fiddling around with the guitar for about 20 years and still can’t play a single song and honestly found nothing you said here to be mind blowing or helpful. I also have dyslexia so it makes trying to read any kind of sheet music or tabs for that matter virtually impossible. Sorry, I just think some people can’t play guitar and I’m one of them. No matter how long I sit and try to fiddle around I always seem to play the same stupid thing over and over again and never get any better.

Really good tips! I have started again with guitar when my son goes to the guitar lessons. And right now my guitar is in the upstairs sofa where I don´t see it, so I don´t play it! I have to bring it down to the living room, right now!

keeping the guitar out and easy to access is HUGE. I literally keep mine on a stand right next to my desk where I spend a lot of time and I pick it up sometimes to play a 2 minute riff while I wait for a loading screen or something. It keeps the guitar in my hands for just some portion of time no matter how small every single day. you can get a stand for like 10 bucks off amazon, or really just lean an acoustic against the wall until you get one.
