  • The Vostok Neptune GMT Ref. 960761 is a great everyday watch for its mechanical charm, low stress wearability, multiple functions, and unique look. But its finicky movement and lack of value takes it, perhaps, into throwaway territory.

Austin, you’re a great salesman. I should sell my Rolexes and just buy a Vostok, Iconaut and Hydronaut. A lot less to worry about and great exit watches. A cure for the horological disease?

I own and love them both for the reasons you’ve outlined, especially vintage. I’m think of changing my ‘name’ to Rolstok or Vostlex

Currently wearing my Neptune GMT black dial, I love this watch. Got interested in it and learned how to regulate it from your videos. It's definitely coming with me when I start my new job in Japan soon ;)
    Cheers Austin!

Great to see an update in the Russian segment of the collection. I just sent 4 junky, old Vostoks to Ukraine for service, and to get a couple damaged watches going. The watchmaker's wife manages the business on eBay (helginswatch, if I can give it a mention); each one of them was serviced/made to run again for under US$30 apiece, so I figure it might be worth keeping this one going (if forex rates persist, the moreso). The small-seconds GMT movements are hard to come by these days- the 'Luna Dude' mod, in particular, has sucked up supply (incidentally, the Am'F'ibia has a center-seconds GMT movement that may be too tall for the classic). New 12h movements are plentifully inexpensive, but will require a few tools to transplant. One of the factory casualties was a 2416 losing time on a timegrapher here, which turned out to be woefully under-lubricated; I imagine it's running much more smoothly now, but that discovery came as a surprise after impeccable initial timekeeping. Keep on introducing the Rolex-bathgoers to the beaters!

If there's sentimental value on a watch, cheap or not, get it serviced if something goes wrong. Damn the cost, I'd say.

In these days of overpriced Rolex watches you have to find some cheaper options to have fun with. I'm big into Tag Heuer chronos currently and enjoying the hobby more than ever.

Owned 10 of them and 8 of them stopped working in less than under a year. How lucky is that, eh!?

2 years on; Sold all of them, except one but, that was made during the communist era and keeps going?!

Totally agree. I've been trying to get my hands on one of these for a year now, but they are not in production anymore, it seems. Don't understand why, because they would sell like crazy. Anyway, enjoy yours 🙂

Thanks Xoan - you can put yourself on the waiting list for one on Meranome, which is what I did. I think when enough people do, they order a batch.

Vostok is a great watch to learn watch repair. Unreliable; Not that cheap anymore. Better off with that Gshock you showed.

the vostok seal is indeed a clever pressure-operated configuration, however at ambient pressure, as with swimming ... that system may not achieve anything magical. Relies then on the servicability of the rubber gasket, assisted perhaps by periodically checking its seating, cleaning the metal profile, and renewing the silicone lubricant. I speculate here, but worry a bit...

I think you're right - the magic happens when the water pressure is high enough to start working for you. Maybe the Rolex design is indeed better for swimming and ambient pressure exposure to water.

This model is very sought after at the moment. Because of a failed Facebook Vostok project, Merenom sold all the dial and hands off to the "Luna Dude" without the watch being officially made. The movement in this watch is the only one that works with the project watch. They are sold out everywhere.

Wow, I didn't know that! Thanks for the heads up, Richard - it makes me appreciate it a little more.

I think it's all a bit of a cult to be honest, certainly one of the less harmless ones but full of the same waffle in the end.
