    Why don't you read the user manual? You have placed them wrong!!!
    PH-10 is on the RIGHT HAND SIDE.
    PSU is on the LEFT HAND SIDE.
    By the way, they should NOT be so close!!!!

    • @VladVonGrigorian
      @VladVonGrigorian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I have used two other phono preamps prior to this one, both were from the Pro-Ject DS family (I think they were DS and DS+). it was quite a jump in price from a $300 phono preamp to a $3,000 unit. In all honesty I got this unit used, not fully intending to buy it. I mean I paid for it, but I had the option to return it for a 100% refund , minus the $60 shipping. I was absolutely positive that a phono preamp cannot possibly cause a significant difference. Just search online and even here on YT. Unless you have a $100,000 turntable and $500,000 of accompanying gear (speakers, amps, and so on) all phono amps north of $200 mark will sound the same. Well, not exactly, they will sound different, but you will not be able to point out an expensive unit sound from a cheap one with your eyes closed. Cartridges - yes, those matter a lot, a $10,000 Koetsu sounds immesurably better than a $100 AT cart, even in a blind test. But phono preamps - not really. The consensus is a $100 unit will not necessarily sound worse to a $5,000 unit even if you dont compare them in a blind test. So, I got this unit just to prove that theory to myself one more time. Just to play with a fancy toy I cannot posssibly afford and pay a $60 for the entertainment. Boy, was a wrong! After just an hour the impression I got was that it is very resolving, even the smallest details below 20dB level (playing at reference) were clearly audible. The stage is clearly defined. The dynamic range is excellent, as in any external power supply unit. It is a versatile unit, that is its second advantage over many phono preamps (the third being the looks - it looks amazing in person!). Even considering its small shortcomings I couldn't return it for a refund. I new I would have regretted the decision if I ever did. I hope this helps.
      Now to shortcomings.
      1) The absense of MM cart settings. Like I mentioned above the unit's versatility is excellent. Not only you have the three EQ curves, you also have their enhanced versions, which adds more dynamic punch , more clarity and transparency and resolution. You can adjust anything for an MC cartridge, better gain range but not for an MM one. Once you switched from MC to MM you can only adjust the gain, thats it. There is no options for MM cartridge capacitance, as for MC impedance. I was positive the MM settings are there, i just had to find them. The manual ddidnt mention capacitance. That is until I read an interview with the company chief designer who confirmed that the PH-10 is mainly designed for the MC market. You can say that is really no big loss, considering amost all audiophile carts are MC. The MM market is mostly entry level carts. May be that is what Gold Note had in mind. As for me, I have used only one MM cart, the first one, with a $250 Akai turntable then I moved to MC and kept upgrading , all MC carts. I cant see myself coming back to an MM cart ever.
      2) The absense of subsonic/rumble filter.
      3) The absense of an ADC board, to output analog to digital for FLAC/DSD archiving
      4) The absense of a MONO button.
      All of those shortcomings, 1-4, would have cost Gold Note less than $5 in parts to implement. None of them are expensive, but they decided to forgo the options. May be they were right. Apart from the MM capacitance settings that even a $50 phono preamps have, the rest of the shortcomings are nice to have, but by no means they required or deeply missed.
      I am sorry about the long worded response, please forgive me.

    • @123Dze
      @123Dze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Vlad, thank you for such detailed response. The hint about absence of MM settings is very helpful. I used pro-ject phono preamps before and now I find them as the narrow place of my audio system. This phono stage is good looking, but there is the lack of information about its sound quality in the Internet . Your video and your description helped me to make a decision. Thank you. Subscribed.

    anyone tested this against McIntosh C2600 internal phono stage?

    • @VladVonGrigorian
      @VladVonGrigorian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, Jimmy. Since you wrote "internal phono stage" you probably know the McIntosh isnt a dedicated phono preamp, it is a versatile tube preamp with an excellent internal DAC and phono stages. There is a lot of useful stuff inside the Mac , it also costs more than double of the the GN. The Gold Note is a dedicated phono , not only that, it has an external power supply (optional). I am guessing you already have the Mac and you are considering going the "purity route" , a horizontal upgrade. That means going from :
      1) turntable, Integrated amp
      to
      2) Turntable, preamp, power amp
      to
      3) Turntable, phono preamp, dac, preamp, power amp
      or even to
      4) Turntable+external power supply, phono preamp+external power supply, DAC+external power supply, preamp + external power supply
      So, essentially you are adding more separates horizontally, instead of vertically when you would have been in stage 1) and simply upgraded from lets say an integrated amplifier costing $7,000 to a better lets say $21,000. It is hard to say which upgrade type is more rewarding, but I can assure you that if you already have a C2600 with an outstanding phono section your $3,000 for the Gold Note could have been spent much wiser than just wasting it on a GN PH-10 even with a PSU-10.

    • @oscillatingdailyaudio

      @@VladVonGrigorian I do not have the C2600 but was thinking about getting one. I currently run MA6600 with Rega P8 and Yaqin MS33B. I enjoy the warmth of the Yaqin and the internal phono of the MA6600 but always looking to improve sound.

      @@oscillatingdailyaudio And your speakers?

    • @VladVonGrigorian
      @VladVonGrigorian  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@oscillatingdailyaudio provided your system is free of major defects (meaning your components reasonably match) spend the bucks you are planning to waste on a dedicated phono - with or without a PSU) spend them on a better cartridge instead. Even your MMA6600 is good enough, so even the preamp money spend on the cartridge too. When it comes to a vinyl rig there are two things that will pay off a sweet dividend after an upgrade. Those are speakers and cartridge. The rest are not as important, but the preamp kind of still is. But lets get back to the answer you are looking for. If you upgrade your phono - in your case that means getting an external phono preamp - you will get a 2%-3% sound improvement. And you will only hear it because you will have spent the money. Meaning the upgrade will be hard to verify in a blind test. But if you will get a better cartridge from your current lets say Ortofon RED (dont know what you have on the Rega) to lets say a Sumiko Starling or a Koetsu Rosewood for $2K-$3K your sound quality will improve orders of magnitude. 200% or more. The difference you get from a cartridge upgrade is incomparable. No other component will give you such a bang for the buck. Yes, at a first glance a cartridge upgrades are expensive ($3K? $5K?) But try to squeeze the same results from a speaker upgrade. You will have to spend tens of thousands, if not more, we are talking Magico's or Goldmund, not Focal or Sonus Faber. One more component , though, offers you a good return on an investment - headphones. You have to spend $200,000 on speakers before you say "this is good enough, any more money spent on speakers will be wasted". Now, to replicate this same sound level but in headphones you will only need around $5K, because the headphones have smaller and lighter drivers, they are free of cabinet vibrations, etc.
      Anyway, as you can see I am suffering from a terrible affliction that causes me to write such long winded replies. I am bored. That is why. But if I were you I wouldn't upgrade neither your current amp. If your speakers are fine then upgrade the cartridge. It will go a very, very long way. Will not look as pretty (less equipment), but boy will it sound glorious! If your speakers could be better then by all means start with them. They are the most important interface. Nothing up the chain will matter if the speakers cant reproduce a difference in sound because they are too daft. OK, I better stop before this becomes a book.

After a restart both inputs retained their settings (22kom/47kohm and 0dB/-3dB). The same after a hard restart, meaning yanking the power cord out, not just a power button press. I hope this helps.
