Watching this video made me realize that I made the right decision some months ago. I’m already working on my first musical, and I have an incredible team.
I had an idea for an alternate ending to Waitress: a frankly insane idea, one which excited me bigly, but I felt like it wouldn't be as well received by others. Fast forward a year, and I still remember it, just as vividly as the day I conceived of it. No notes. That's when i started taking it seriously. It very quickly exploded into its own original story with a totally different setting and themes. A few days ago I submitted a proposal to a local program based on the idea.
What are your thoughts on making it a play first, then seeing how certain types of songs would work with it, or should you make it into a musical right away?
A great question! Although plays seem like they might be a good stepping stone, I'm of the opinion that it is far better to go straight into the musical. Plays and musicals are different enough that you would essentially be doubling your work. You can always begin writing out your first draft messy musical script without music and just signpost where you think songs might go. I do that all the time!
