I've always wanted to run a full mech guard list. Spent 6 years in the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) so mech infantry has a special place in my heart. Rock of the Marne!!
One of your best offerings MG. It would be nice to see your favorite army list for Mech. Guard here and a brief run through on your Mech. Guard tactics when using them. Maybe another video for that later on? 😊
So far the "Steel Dragoons" 87th Mechanized Infantry regiment of my Winged Hussars of Osowiec army have just 4 Chimeras. Time to pump those numbers up. On the other hand, the "Sobieski's Lances" 3rd Cavalry regiment of the same army are about to get their very first Stormsword.
As someone who collected an all mechanized Steel Legion army back in the early 'aughts, glad to see it is still a viable force. Been thinking of dusting off the regiment and putting it back into action after it has been in storage for the past 20 years.
Another issue, somewhat touched on here, is that Mech Guard infantry exists in two states: highly vulnerable, but controlling the objective (can't even have orders on them on the turn they get out) or safe, but just contributing some supplemental fires from their Chimeras, forcing you to work with the subpar OC of said Chimeras. Massed Guard infantry makes chewing through them a chore, though probably not as much of one as blowing up both the transport and the infantry, point for point, but they have defenses like Take Cover, and they are always going to make controlling an objective while they live a problem. I think some mechanized elements are helpful- a couple Catachan squads in Chimeras as a forward screen/early objective snatcher, say, but massed infantry are necessary to follow up with, to keep the objectives claimed. That could just be me justifying my lack of Chimeras in my early army, though. They are expensive, in a dollars to points sense!
You seem to not include a scions with taurax prime. what I found out is that you can get a inquisitor and henchmen + a joken upgrade. all their guns are pistol but now you get rerolls to wound coming out of that. With any other debuff you can throw on the target.
mechanized infantry is the current meta IRL. I'm a new player and I'm building my guard to match current military formation. I don't care the Valkyrie is said to be over priced. speed kills. [ fortunate son intensifies]
As a mech guard commander (8e Blinde DKoK represent), I have found in my very casual games that if you do not rush and lock down the objectives early, you are in for a rough, rough time, as you have difficulty digging out foes from the points. But by the emperor once you get dug in, you are a pain in the ass to get out from an objective. Granted, this may just be my errors in command, but it’s what I’ve found in my limited experience
Hi! I would like to start to play with warhammer 40k, and I choosed Astra Militarum fraction. And I m planning a BTG (battalion tactical group) like unit, which is similar to the mechanized infantry unit showed in this video. That is why I find it so usefull. May I ask some question about it?
2-3 Catachan fists are where it’s at right now Durable enough that it takes seriously dedicated firepower to take out, 6”scout is invaluable for pushing objectives early, and the quad flamer loadout will free up your valuable mech orders for the heavy hitters close behind Hybrid guard is the (statistically proven) best iteration of the army right now since it takes advantage of all the armies strengths while dodging the many pitfalls of an incredibly mediocre detachment/enhancement/stratagem set
is it worth trying to screen with a mechanized force? sentinels are the only walker so the only thing that can do a heroic intervention and they are expensive and likely to draw fire. was wondering if i could get away with cyclops or centaurs and at least try and screen some of the big monsters from getting at me tanks or maybe try and hide cyclones behind walls to stop infantry from over?
Curious if there’s any play for this even just on a casual fluff level, but how is air cav guard these days? Always been my favorite minds eye way to play rolling in with Valkyries and kasrkins or similar pieces.
I’m really not familiar with tenth edition, but even if the reinforcement stratagem doesn’t work on the dedicated transports, could it still be used on the infantry squad by itself? They would just have to walk back on the board.
2CP to bring back 10 Cadians is a big ask imo. Might be worth it if your mech list has blobs of 20 in super heavy transport but I like 3 armored sentinels for Reinforcements in my mech list.
@@guysholliday Fair enough. Maybe it could work if you had a few twenty man squads as a part of a second wave to follow up on the mechanized squads, but that’s probably trading off a lot of mobility which is kind of the point of a mechanized guard list.

I would have to disagree with you there. Tank orders for all your vehicles (including arty) and command squad can order out of a Chimera onto sentinels or squads who's transports have blown up. Lethal hits from arty and supporting tanks.
My mistake. It is just the Scouts ability that is conferred onto dedicated transports, not all special abilities. (Core rules pg. 39) Thanks!@@Dorsidwarf
well im just working this out myself but if you go with infantry leaders it seems like you need to get the troops out of the transports as quickly as possible to try and take advantage of any bonus's hes contributing while if you go tank commander orders or leon you can leave em in the truck and heck in leons case still order them if the chimera goes down. doubly good in the case of ogryns...
Thank you for this good metagame / review of an Imperial Guard strategy. Another good review. However, may I have a couple of technical suggestions ? First, the old slyle television within the video is nice and cool, but the blurriness and interlacing effect is a bit too strong for my taste. Could you dial this down a bit ? So we could see better what's inside ? Second : I'm using a bit old relic as a computer 😀, with a Phenom CPU. Unfortunately the 720pixels and 1080 pixels resolutions are lagging on my PC, while they should not. Why ? Because you encode in 60 FPS rate. There is no quality benefit to display calm tactical reviews or after-action reports slideshows in this fast framerate. On the other hand, other TH-cam videos on 25-30 FPS play absolutely fine on my PC, even on 1080 pixels. So could you please swich to normal framerate for your future videos ?

We really need a Commissar Cain model to load into our Chimera’s with some squads!

My army is themed after the Steel Legion, snagged a bunch of kits for a great price too so im stoked to build this up

Tbh the way it sounds in your comment is that its just hard to root out defenders regardless of whats being run
3x10 scions in 3 taurox primes and 3x10 kasrkin in a crassus for those juicy fire support wound rerolls 👌
I so want to make a mech guard list. I will fiddle with it and bring it to the live chat soon
I miss my 3xPlasma veterans in Chimeras and 3xMelta veterans on Valkyries.
Chimera with heavy weapon laser teams in it seems pretty decent

Mech guard sounds like it has similar issues to Imperial Knights in polarizing matchups.

Valkyries are twice the points cost as chimeras. It's a beautiful piece that I'm not in a hurry to buy.
It's completely worthless now

Hopefully the codex will include some more goodies to make different lists viable (3.7 seconds before 11th Ed drops)
My hope would be for Chimeras to have the Regimental keyword in mech lists
I would have the extra heavy stubber or HKM on my tanks but I don't have the extra sprue with them for every tank
I thought a drawback is the lacking order support.
DISREGARD! I was wrong!
Keep in mind that Cadian infantry special rule for sticky objectives applies even while embarked in a transport!
Don't think it does? units in transports usually have all their rules turned off.
My mistake. It is just the Scouts ability that is conferred onto dedicated transports, not all special abilities. (Core rules pg. 39) Thanks!@@Dorsidwarf
