When their parents fled Pol Pot s killing fields, they were granted safe haven in America. But years later, 196 all-American youths are being deported back to Cambodia after being convicted of crimes.
In 2002 President Bush began deporting convicted criminals and the Cambodian Government reluctantly agreed to accept them. "Once you've committed a crime, you are done," tells Monk B. Like the other deportees, he was a permanent resident of the US but hadn't become a citizen. Almost 2 years after being released from prison, Monk B got a phone call. "They said 'Pack your bags.' I said 'Where am I going?' Home."
But home meant Cambodia. After originally struggling to adapt to his new life, he now works in Korsnag, a harm reduction program for drug addicts in Phnom Penh. "I tell them I used to be a criminal too so that's why I can work here. I understand you." But not everyone is as lucky as Monk B and some can 't cope with their new surroundings. With President Bush now gone, there are hopes that his successor will stop the deportations. "Obama, act quick, man! Because there are a lot of lives that you can save."

As an American citizen I was shocked at the work ethic of my husband who immigrated from Japan. I had so much respect for him. He loved this country and never took anything for granted. Raised 3 daughters who graduated college with advanced degrees. One engineer, one Psychologist and one financial advisor. That's giving back to society. In early years he went through bad financial times but never was tempted to commit a crime. Instead he worked 3 jobs. His grandkids have also graduated college. One mechanical engineer, one to become a nurse anesthetist. Staying out of trouble and hard work can pay off.
I’m a Cambodian from Oakland, Ca. I was fortunate enough to have good people around me, and lead me to the right path. Now I have a career with the U.S Military living a very easy life.
Good for you! You did the right thing and became a responsible member of society. Choices, it comes down to choices.

I met my beautiful wife who is Puerto Rican, and we are expecting our first child in June this year. Overall my message to everyone here. Always give 100% to anything you do. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed. Be the bigger person, and don’t stoop down low. Lastly be sure to love people around you, make them feel secured, and comfortable(family).

I have sympathy for these people to a degree, but actions have consequences. It’s also noticeable that details of the crimes these people committed is not supplied.
This video scared me into getting my US Citizenship. I never knew about these laws on residency, and deportation until recently. Do not take your residency for granted! Getting over here to the USA was the difficult part. Use this opportunity to educate yourself, and assimilate. Being a US resident already, you have a strait path to Citizenship, unlike Illegal immigrants in the news of late. There are only a handful of Countries where you can start off with nothing and still succeed. I speak from experience as a Cambodian Refugee that came to the US in the 80's. It takes hard work and constant education on improving yourself, but it can be done. Good luck and don't do stupid things like joining a gang and committing crimes.

What you say is true, yet still not easily done depending on where you/your family end up in the States. Younger people are highly influenceable and when you see your peers running amok on the streets it becomes normalized and once set on the wrong path it can be very much a domino effect. Immigrant parents can have the best intentions in the world for their kids (most do) but the majority of them work all day to provide and therefore aren't able to supervise their kids. I'm sure for the majority deported whatever crimes they committed occurred in their teens-early 20s. Deportation of Cambodian residents spiked during the Trump admin too. Luckily things will cool off now for at least 4 years.
My 2nd wife is Cambodian she is the most caring human I know I love the Khmer people moving there in April

Green card holders are subject to deportation if you commit a felony in the United States. First thing was not to commit a crime. 2nd was get your citizenship. They blew their chance, hard lesson to learn. I immigrated about 20 years ago from Asia, work hard and stayed out of trouble. Got my citizenship in 5 years. Brought my wife and foreign born kid in. My son is 25 and doing fine. All my three boys were honor roll and no trouble. Environment and guidance helps a lot to lead them on the straight path.
My goal is to buy huge land in Cambodia and create a strong community for my Cambodian brothers that been deported. Stay up my brothers. ✊ 🇰🇭

I wish to this people the best, he can work and little by little fix his house and he can even teach English in any school or work at the hotels helping tourists. We are farmers, we know everything about poverty and struggle even here in another rich country we struggle but we thank to God for his blessing we can pay rent and eat. I hope the Cambodians help them to get on his feet and live a normal life. I have Cambodian friends.

Cambodia is quite nice as a foreigner, but also having the ability to go back to the west anytime to see family and generate more dollars is something these guys don't have. Thousands of Australian Cambodians have moved their to run businesses and connect with a culture that they never grew up with or was absent from since late 70s or early 80s. Cambodia is booming and not only are there Ethnic Cambodian Australians there but Australians of other ethnicity's too, in their thousands. Cambodia is an opportunity but not necessarily for those deported as in they may not have the skills needed to survive and thrive. Funny, because allot of them were actually born in Thailand>

My father came from Cambodia in 1979 and had a nickel in his pocket and he worked every single day with no off day for almost 40 years until he's retired recently. Here in America, the land of opportunity and if you work hard, you're make it.... just don't commit any crime and live humbled and follow the rules just like everyone else!

Gosh! This is so sad. I’m glad they were both able to turn their situations into something better. It’s nice that their parents will send them money if they need anything. I’m also happy that they haven’t turned into targets for people who want money. It’s easy to become a target when you have connections to someone living in a developed country because these people often think everyone is rich out there.
You wouldn't say the same thing if one of them rob or threaten you. They got deported for a reason.

True. If they're not citizens and if they commit serious crimes, they should be deported. Citizenship confers both rights and responsibilities and the duty of an elected government is to first and foremost protect the citizens who elected it to power.

It's hard to make a living in Cambodia. But if you have sufficient pension or other independent financial support, Cambodia is a great place to live, in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, or Battambang.
If you need to keep active, there are many NGOs you can volunteer for.
I was just listening to the video in the background and I swear it was 2 disadvantaged black men that somehow got returned accidentally to Cambodia...the gangsta monk walk....that's what made me look and see they were Asian!

The takeaway for legal US residents who are not citizens is: apply for citizenship as soon as possible (before getting in trouble with the laws). If these deported folks became citizens, they would still be living in the USA.

i asked my 6 year old daughter a tough question just to see what she would say. i asked her, if someone said something to hurt your feelings, should they be put in jail?? she immediately said yes. then i asked her, if mommy said something to hurt your feelings, should she go to jail? and she said with shock, NO!! i had to explain to her that you have the right to say anything you want no matter if it hurts someones feelings because words cannot physically hurt anyone. lol shes a very bright young lady;) its the same thing when trying to correct those who do not understand what rights we have as citizens. if you are a citizen of the united states, the only crime that can strip you of your citizenship is treason. the only way you can be deported is by joining a foreign military, running for office in a foreign country and acquiring citizenship in a foreign country except by marriage. so i dont understand how bush was legally able to deport united states citizens for regular crimes that shouldve landed them in an american prison. then again, seeing all the ignorance in the comment section, perhaps i can understand how he was able to do it.

I know this is a harsh punishment but I feel like this law should be mandated for new immigrants especially in the US. Like driving, it’s a privilege to drive and to be a citizen should be the same. This keeps people on the right track and try’s hard to not commit any crimes.

"Only committed minor crimes" This is the crap that makes the general public angry. Tell the victims that the crimes were "only minor". Any crime is serious. Any crime for a non citizen is grounds for deportation. If they were "good Americans" , they would have obeyed the laws and be grateful for the opportunity to live in the greatest country on earth.

@mrbobbilly Permanent resident is a green card holder and NOT a citizen. You are a legal resident but you can still get kicked out if they want you out. He would still be back home if his parents got their citizenship before he turned 18 or if he applied for it.
