In the name of so-called development, rampant land developers are destroying poor Cambodian communities, leaving thousands homeless. All with a wink and a nod from the country's political elite.
'They don't care - they want to make profits' says Sam Rainsy as he wades through a flooded settlement in Phnom Penh. With a developer filling in the nearby lake to build a high-rise, it's just a matter of time before the residents are pushed out. A 2001 law grants ownership to settlers of more than 5 years. Yet across Cambodia developers are bulldozing homes after offering an unfair pay-off to residents. 'We had to fight for our belongings!' says one woman who was dragged kicking and screaming from her home. 'What the company has done with the complicity of authorities is illegal' cries a human rights worker. The neighbouring community watches in silence, knowing that they will be next.

As a citizen of Cambodians, i feel so dismayed and broken down with what had happened in the past several years. It has been on my mind since that day. It has still proceeded until now. How can we eliminate these kinds of actions to the same nationality.

Heartbreaking. Boeng Kak was a very large urban lake & acted as a necessary groyne for Phnom Penh during the wet season. Sam Rainsey is a refreshing alternative & this country's only hope for creating positive change in this damaged country. It is presently run by an elite comprising royalty & Khmer Rouge remaining in the administration.

A lot of commenters would say if poor people
cannot afford kids, do not have them, but before
the war in Cambodia, more than 90% of the population
owned their lands with titles, after the war the people
with or without titles were entitled to land they have
lived on for over 5 years, these people were self sufficient,
asking the government for nothing, now the land is given
to cronies of the government, and the people are brutally
displaced, what's different from the action of bank robbers?

This video is now 2 years old. In the last two years, phnom Pehn skyline has completely changed. There are so many new building still going up today the cranes are hard to count. They are even losing their language as all the Chinese labor that is shipped in, don’t leave. They are now part of of cambodia with purchased passports and citizenships. People now have casinos going up everywhere and all that comes with casinos.
It hard to believe that the Phnom Pehn that I knew years ago has so many luxury car dealerships and Italian sports cars with Chinese at the wheel.

You can't get a house there for $20K? That's insane. Though, if I were in one of those tiny shacks, I'd take the money. I've no idea how expensive it is there, but I can't imagine it's a lot. My parents bought a home in the US in the 1970's for $20k, now that same house costs $130k! I'd buy it back if I could.
Housing seems to be a problem everywhere. It's as if the rich are buying up ALL the homes and land.
