  • In this jazz drummer lesson, I break down some of the biggest differences between traditional jazz playing and more modern and progressive approaches to playing jazz. Understanding these two approaches to jazz drumming will help you feel comfortable in many different playing situations.

Here's a list of some of the differences I discuss and demonstrate in this drum lesson:
    Traditional
    - Comping and soloing is more language oriented
    - Not as dynamically adventurous
    - Clear sense of 4 and 8 measure phrasing
    - Little usage of textures
    - Less usage of toms when comping and playing time
    - More traditional usage of rudiments and bop language
    - Features the swing and the groove with breaking it up
Some drummers associated with “traditional styles” include:
    Max Roach ***
    Philly Joe Jones
    Mel Lewis
    Roy Haynes***
    Stan Levy
    Sonny Payne
    Gene Krupa
    Frank Butler
    Ben Riley
    Frankie Dunlop
    Frank Butler
    Jimmy Cobb
    Sam Woodyard
    Art Taylor
    Lewis Nash
    Kenny Washington
    Joe Farnsworth
    Gregory Hutchinson ***
    Willie Jones III
    Modern
    - Breaking up the time
    - Over the bar line playing using hemiolas, modulations and odd groupings
    - Dynamically adventurous
    - Texturally Adventurous
    - Toms involved when comping and playing time
    - May feel less restrictive to many musicians than a traditional approach
Some drummers associated with “modern styles” include:
    Max Roach ***
    Roy Haynes ***
    Elvin Jones ***
    Tony Williams
    Jack DeJohnette
    Paul Motian
    Brian Blade
    Al Foster ***
    Gregory Hutchinson ***
    Marcus Gilmore
    Tyshawn Sorey
    Colin Stranahan
    Eric Harland
    Bill Stewart
    Chris Dave
    Obed Calvaire
    Rudy Royston
    Dan Weiss
    Kendrick Scott
    Otis Brown III
NOTE: This is list of drummers is NOT comprehensive by any means.
Here's a transcription of the intro by Simon Lopez: • Drum Transcription - Q... . Check it out!

Hello Q! As always an amazing video full of amazing content! When I'm playing modern I feel like its hard to not overplay, but I think that the solution its to stick to an idea and fully develope it before moving and also having a really good bagage of that traditional roots language... I'm working on that!
Thanks for the shout out BTW! And I have to apologize because Jou T. Farmer its just my IG name!!! So we're the same person lol!!!
    See you next video!

Thanks for the comment Joel. When playing in a more "modern" manner, you have to let the music lead you where to go instead of forcing things, though sometimes you can just throw things out there to see how the band reacts to it. But everything you play must be to serve the music and to create musical moments WITH THE BAND, instead of just for your own edification. Hope this helps! And thanks for the clarification with your name:)

One way to think of Jazz Drumming is to think of it in terms of 3 different feels. 2-beat, double time, and open. Ahmad Jamal and Miles Davis during the late 1950's and early 1960's are some of the best models of a 2-beat or double time feel. The Bill Evans trios and Miles Davis quintet of the mid 1960's and also Elvin Jones with John Coltrane are some of the best models of a more open feel. Most of the important groups of the 1970's and 1980's were influenced by these rhythm sections.

Really good lesson Quincy! It's useful to know the difference. It took me a while to understand that you need to study traditional before you can even attempt modern... I wonder what they will call what we are referring to as 'modern' jazz in 60 years?

    • @drumqtips
      @drumqtips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Bebop will become early jazz and "modern" jazz will become traditional jazz. lol!

  • @christophbrylka6256

Great video once again but I was a little surprised by you referring to some post-war drumming style as 'traditional' while I still would refer to all of it as 'modern'. 😉

    • @drumqtips
      @drumqtips  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That's why I used quotation marks when I said modern and progressive:) Everything happening after the mid 40's could be considered "modern" for sure. I guess I was also thinking about even "more modern" approaches that are being applied to TODAY'S jazz drumming that's different than the "modern" approaches being used by Kenny Clarke and Max Roach. Great point Christoph👍🏾. Thanks for watching as always Christoph!

I would like to ask for your opinion, Quincy.
I’m 67, and live way up in the frozen North.
I played live music as a guitarist in clubs for years. Now I have a modest home recording studio. I love playing both my drums and my guitars; I only play bass and keys when I need to as part of a recording.
My question: at my age, what percentage of my time should I spend on my main instrument, guitar, compared to drums which is much fun but I started them very late in life?
I feel like I should stop drums and completely focus on guitar.
Any advice for an old musician?

    • @drumqtips
      @drumqtips  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends on what you’re trying to do. If you’re trying to get really good on the drums then maybe spend more time in them than guitar since you’re behind in that instrument. If you’re just doing it for fun and not expecting to get that good, then maybe just practice drums once in a while and focus more time on the guitar. Hard question for me to answer since I don’t know exactly what your goals are. Thanks for watching!
