IT ISN'T FAIR. IT ISN'T FUCKING FAIR. People always speak highly of the deceased as having "appreciated life fully," but that cliche doesn't even come close to how much Monty Oum deserved to live! He was a high school dropout who, through sheer passion and desire to learn and create, saw his dreams become timeless animated products...
    It isn't fucking fair.

    • @ZombieShooter123
      @ZombieShooter123 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Hey man, I'm grieving with you here, more than you probably think I am. But I need to let you know something. Life isn't fair. You know that phrase, "Lifes a bitch."? It's true. Life doesn't care about you or me, or about anyone, no matter how much good they can do or have done. And because it doesn't care, bad things happen. The happy father with a new child gets called away to die in another continent. The loving wife is beat every day by a drunkard of a husband. The innocent rot in jail and the guilty continue their dirty work.
Life is a series of pains that continuously stab you in all the worst places. Life will beat you down until you can't move, and then some more to make sure you don't try again.
But you need to keep trying. When life hits you hard, hit it back harder. Scream and shout, kick and punch, whatever it takes keep moving forward. Life may not be fair, but we can be. That thing that RT asked of us? To do something creative and good for the world? Go out and do it, start making life fair. Change the rules of the game and beat life down until it realizes that we aren't stopping here. It can try and beat us down all it wants, but we will keep on moving.

  • @bigfatcarp93
    @bigfatcarp93 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2904

Here's the thing that's really getting me. It's not even the sadness of it; I mean, YES, there's that. But there's something else, a bit harder to define.
Let me put it this way: think of the very idea of a Roosterteeth employee dying. What is that? Well, it's tragic, it's awful, it's a reminder that the universe can be cruel, in taking away one of these wonderfully talented and beloved people. It's wrong.
But the fact that this was _Monty_. It doesn't just feel sad, it doesn't just feel wrong, to me it just feels... incorrect. Like the universe made a typo. Like, how could it be _Monty_, you know? _Monty_ can't die, he's the indestructible King of Cool.
Because of this, Monty's death has rattled me deeply, beyond just sorrow. I feel like I can't trust my instincts anymore. Has anybody else been getting this feeling?
I will say this, though: it is truly sad. Monty was everything I wish I was: creative, unbelievably talented, laid back, wise, and one hell of a dancer.
I've seen a lot of people commenting "RIP Monty, we loved you," which is a sentiment I'd like to echo, but at the same time, there is another sentiment that I don't feel has been said enough. And so, that is what I will say instead:
Rest in Peace, Monty. You were fucking awesome.

Monty did a signing at RTX the year that I went. He was really shy, but very charismatic. You could look at his smile and just think that everything in the entire world was okay, that nothing destructive or wrong was going on in the world, all from a look and a grin.
I remember my friend asking him "What do you like most about your work?"
Monty replied, very forward with his answer, "Being able to say that I made it, and the thing that I made, made someone at least the tiniest bit happy."
    I'll never forget that.

  • @Forgetthereality
    @Forgetthereality 8 ปีที่แล้ว +990

Family lost their son. RT lost a beloved friend and colleague. Fans lost their idol. The world lost every other story, every other universe, and every other beloved character when this man died. All of you creative minds hear Monty out and start on that story, start on that project, start on that dream. Who knows, maybe those characters, those pieces of art, those dreams are instilled in someone else out there. Maybe they need it awakened in them as well. Maybe you're that torch that flame that fire that will some day inspire someone to start down the long road of life and make something worth while all over again. We lose so much more than a person when they die. We lose their minds, their hearts, their presence, their thoughts and their worlds trapped inside their head. The only thing that stopped Monty was his time. He didn't have enough but he sure as hell made it worth while.
"If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams are something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death." ~Monty Oum
He knew it. He knew he wouldn't have enough time but that damn well didn't stop him. Look how much he has given us with the amount of time he was with us.

Its weird, I never knew Monty and never followed him. But the news struck me really hard. I'm not one to cry over death even in family, but this one was different. Its like someone ripped a piece of my soul out of my body. That sounds cliche, but its the only way I can describe it. He shouldn't have gone. Hell it's not exactly easy to get me to truely cry either, but i did when i found out. But learning about him these past days has inspired me to look into the same career, and to try and get off my lazy arse and create. It really does suck how reality works the way it does. So they embrace it and just wait by enjoying the life they have left.

But to do cool things we need time. Time is the inevitable fluid we must swim through to do great things. To have time is to have time to do cool things. But we don't have enough of it to swim through to get to the other side; the other side where are goals lie waiting. It evaporates in the unknown circumstances life makes us cross. Life is a mysterious force. But that never stops us from swimming.

Monty's death was actually a little ironic. He went into comatose due to his allergy to juniper, and Lie Ren, the ONE CHARACTER ON RWBY THAT HE VOICED, was a member of the team named after it. In fact, Lie Ren is the only member of that team to have a primary color that would have no connection to Juniper's color if you were to highlight the primary color of every member on team Juniper. Jaun: Blue, Nora: Magenta, Pyrrha: Crimson (Red), Ren... Green. His color is disconnected from the contact chain leading to Juniper Blue.
Contact with Juniper is what killed the hunter who couldn't contact Juniper.
And where was Ren's initial on team JNPR? At the end of it. Monty was at the end of Juniper, and Juniper was the end of him. Pretty scary stuff.

I remember when I first got word that Monty had passed away.
I was at my girlfriends for the day, and as we both don't sleep at night, we were asleep during the day. I randomly woke up about 2 hours into the nap, and checked my phone. There was a twitter notification. At first when I seen the icon in the notifications bar I was confused, as I have always, and still, have Twitter notifications turned off. I pulled down the bar, and seen the tweet from Rooster Teeth. "Monty Oum has passed away - (link)". I just sat there silent. with one or tears running down my face. My girlfriend must of felt that I had sat up and she woke up and asked me what was wrong, I just looked at her and said "Monty's dead". She sat up and put her arms around me for a while, and then went to ask her family not to disturb us for the rest of the day, because she knew how much RT meant to me. It was while she was out of the room that I just broke down crying, thankfully I was able to stop before she returned. My world is basically that girl and the internet. With her bring a RT fan, and everyone I follow on twitter, or the pages I like on Facebook all being RT related, the world was a much different place that day.
It was when I first seen the animation in Red vs Blue that I decided to get into the world of media, I dedicated what was left of my time in High School to everything related to it, and then went to a college to study Interactive Media, where I would learn 3D animation. It was in this course I met my beautiful girlfriend, and friends that I was closer to than any of my friends before. This September I go into my final year of University, where I'm still studying 3D modeling and Animation. This is what my future will be, all because of a warthog bursting through a wall.
Monty changed my future, and without him I would of just been a miserable teenager in High School. Now I'm doing something I love, with a girl that I love, and with friends I love.
    Thank you Monty.

Monty's death is one of those things that my mind always comes back to in those quiet moments. I was never a huge fan of him and never got to know about him well until after I became a huge fan of RWBY. RWBY was the first artistic work that ever resonated with me on a "this feels right" level. The action, the art style, the atmosphere, the world, it all was so perfect.
Because of that, Monty's death, as little as I knew him, was one of the few deaths that truly affected me. For me, I've been to my fair share of funerals. It seemed people just came and went. They lived and now they don't. With Monty, it's so much more complicated because of this legacy he left. Not a company, or money, but a CREATION. Something that continues to grow and flourish and change peoples' lives even after he's gone.
I don't know what to feel about it. It's beautiful, yet it's so tragic. So meaningless and yet so meaningful. I loved RWBY before, but now everytime I see it, I see a single man's dream become reality, who poured everything about himself as an artist into it, bringing joy and tears to people even as I'm watching it. It became so much more than just a really cool story.
This is why RWBY will always be special to me. I just wished it didn't have to be this way for it to happen, but that's the mystery of life. That's why I'm always so perplexed yet awed when I look back at RWBY and Monty's death - it's where despair and hope are so closely intertwined they almost blur into one, and you wouldn't have had such hope if it weren't for the despair.

Monty Oum wasn't just a great man or a great influence. Monty Oum is a hero. He did not just say he enjoyed his work, or that he loved the creativity it brought with it. He watched the creativity it spawned, and was amazed at how it could simply explode with such ferocity. He encourages everyone to be creative in their own, unique way. To make something new in such a way that everyone is inspired. To give inspiration to those who are starting out, and encouragement to all to become an artist in their own way.
Monty Oum laid a foundation for flourishing creativity, and he wants to see it blossom into something beautiful. Monty Oum is an unsung hero, a powerful, encouraging influence, and one of the greatest men this world has ever been graced with.

***** Don't be disheartened by other people's faith.
      It is Hope.
That is all anyone has left, when another dies, and those he leaves behind are left to grieve.
I didn't know Monty myself - in fact, I am still relatively new to the whole of RT. But he was a good man. And people empathize with that loss. They feel for themselves, and for his family and friends. Everyone has felt the sting of losing someone close to them. Everyone can empathize. Because everyone else shares that hope - whether they be Christians, or Muslims, Hindu's, or Jews.
Even among Atheists, there is still that desperate, nagging twing of hope.
Hope that they are wrong. Hope that, against all logic and reason, what feels so terrible and so empty, is for him the start of something greater. You don't need to believe in a God, or Gods to take comfort in that. You don't need faith.
      You only need Hope.
People say that where there is life, there is hope. I like to think the reverse is true.

fragged noob gaming ah man sorry to hear that :(. Both my Grandads died within two months of each other. One died after fighting it for two years and the other was cleared of it and in remission but ended up dying a few weeks later from a massive heart attack. Both were amazing people and great influences in my life and even now, nearly five years later, it doesn't feel like they've truly died. Small things like habits you picked up from them, food you'd eat at their home, the things you do that you used to do with them are what keep their memory alive. As long as you have those memories bud, then your grandad will never truly die. You still remember him, so he'll live on through you and your family and everyone who knew him :).

Of everyone on the staff to have to die, it's ironic that the one with the most drive, the biggest desire to live to the fullest, was the one who left. Maybe he knew it was his time. Maybe that's why he pushed so hard to do everything he possibly could have. Maybe that's why he loved his friends and life so much. Or maybe he was just an astounding person. Never say die, see ya later Monty.

    Great men walk our world
    Geniuses in their field
We take for granted their great designs
    Until Death's hand is yield
To some, to many, to all of us
    We hide away our fears
But all must stand with open eyes
And let it rain our tears
We are men, we are not gods
    We wither and we die
    We leave behind our legacy

Monty is a great loss not only for Rooster Teeth and the community, but also for animation as a whole. He brought some unique things to the table that nobody will be able to replicate. RWBY and its success is unprecedented for an original 3D animated series without the backing of a big time production studio or network speaks volumes for his talent as well as the loyalty of the RT community.
Without a doubt, Monty will be missed, but he is not truly gone. He will live on not only in his work, but also in each and every person he has touched and inspired throughout the years.

This man, Monty Oum- he's one of a kind. Irreplaceable in every aspect imaginable. It's a rare thing for one to create so many things with their bare hands that, despite the fact that he was a pretty quiet person and didn't care to be in the spotlight all the time, you still knew there was something special about him. The things he accomplished on his own in the time he had were greater than what 10 people could accomplish in his lifetime. He had the gift to inspire literally millions. The things he created aren't simply flashy fight scenes and mindless action. They're pieces of him that will live on forever, and they're beautiful. We'll never stop missing you, Monty.

Devon Harris It's kinda strange- usually when you see movies and CGI and animation in the media, you don't care much who made it, probably due to the fact that there's so many people involved that they all just kinda blend together. But when I saw Haloid, I was immediately googling his name and trying to find more of his work. He has that effect on people and it's just amazing.

I feel like Monty was the only person at Rooster Teeth that didn't take his job for granted at one point or another, he was always working, always creating, and always doing his job. He genuinely loved what he was doing and that is why he worked so hard. That's why it just feels so wrong that he died, I can imagine Monty saying "Me, die, that doesn't sound like me, I'm too busy to die, their is a lot more work to be done here, and I know if I don't do it no one else will." RIP Monty we love you and you were an inspiration to all of us. If heaven is real, God just got an extremely productive angel, that probably works harder than he does.

"I wasn't dreaming when they told me you were gone, I was wide awake and feeling they had to be wrong" - Red Like Roses Part II, RWBY
These words might not have been written by you, but they sure do express how i felt when I first heard the news. I've been living in denial the past few days, and i still am. Even as I'm typing this, tears are flowing down my face. But as you say, "The thing you gotta learn to, is essentially let go." It's not gonna be easy, but we will. Rest In Peace Monty. You'll live in our hearts and minds for everything that you were, and a great inspiration. Thank You for everything you've done. You sure as heck were awesome... The King Of Cool. I wish I could've met you. I aspire to be like you. I'll keep trying my best, and follow what you've said, "Never let anyone tell you that something is impossible.".
I'm gonna be makin a tribute video (I WANNA INCLUDE AS MANY OF HIS FANS AS POSSIBLE, thats the least i could do for those that don't know how to or don't have the time. It's gonna take awhile cuz i ain't very good at it but i want this to be my best video yet). Anyone who wants me to write anything for them can send me an email at :

I never knew who Monty Oum was before his passing, but after learning of him, I can say he was an incredible person. In this over-saturated and capitalized time we live in, where people aren't allowed to make it on their own anymore, he defied the odds.
This was a man who got his start just making fan animations. He started with something so simple. He was passionate about his art. He made it for himself because it was something he loved to do. He was the American dream. He succeeded with all odds against him.
Some will win and some will lose, but Monty Oum showed us that we can still win. We shouldn't fear failure. We should aspire to be all we can be, just like he did.
May you rest in peace, Master Oum. We will never forget you.

I keep trying to find something deep and meaningful to say, but how could I possibly sum up how pivotal Monty has been in my own, and so many other peoples lives? I'll be honest, up until Monty's passing, I never knew much about him, heck, I'd never even seen any of his work outside of RvB. At first, Monty was just that guy who occasionally showed up in videos with really cool hair and clothes. But when I heard the news that he was no longer with us, I got curious. I delved into the world of RWBY, Haloid, and everything else even remotely connected to Monty. Since then, I've never looked back. The more I found out about Monty, the more he inspired me, the more heartbroken I was that he was gone. I never thought that someone I'd never met would have such a significant impact on my life. And yet, I sit here, two years later, about to start a course in Animation and Game Design, all because of this one incredible person. I was in a dark place two years ago, I was depressed, disenchanted, nothing seemed to be going right for me. But then, I started watching RWBY. For all its minor flaws, for all the problems it had early on, it got me through what was the worst part of my life. For that, I am eternally grateful. Its hard for me to look back and actually see any of these flaws myself. To me, its perfect. It was the one shining light in the darkness, and Monty was the one who lit it. If it wasn't for him, I have no idea what kind of place I would be in right now. And even though most of us never got to meet Monty... he was, and still is, an incredibly important person in all our lives. No words can describe how much I miss Monty, so I can't even begin to fathom how it feels to not only have lost such an amazing person, but for his family and friends; a friend, a brother, a husband and a son. It almost escapes belief that its already been two years. And even though so much has happened in these past years, Monty's legacy still burns bright, and it isn't about to go away any time soon. Because if even one person is still inspired by Monty Oum, he's never truly gone.

I first heard of Monty when I was a small child. I watched dead fantasy. I knew I wanted to do that. As I grew up I didn't really keep track of the animator of Dead Fantasy until someone showed me RWBY. I watched it and loved it. It brought back my creative spark, it made me want to animate and create worlds that I never dreamt possible. Me and my friend watched the show together when one day I noticed he seemed depressed. I asked him what was wrong and I wished, hoped, prayed that he was wrong. He said "It's Monty.... He's... dead." It seemed so unreal when he told me. I didn't speak for months. I just sat there depressed. And then our school began teaching a animation class.
I was placed in the Class because I was curious. Two students helped teach it. One day one of them said "we're learning about some of the greatest animators" I naturally brushed this off. They showed the maker of Attack on Titan, Hanayo (Studio Ghibli) and many others. But the last one they showed was Monty.
I remember sitting in the classroom thinking to myself "Monty... If only you could see how far you've come."
I found out later that the teacher was actually against putting together a sideshow of the greats, but it was a student that changed his mind.
It was the same person who showed me RWBY.

It is all right to mourn over the passing of someone, whether you knew them in real life or over a screen. Monty has been one of the most influential people to ever work for Rooster Teeth. He was someone who inspired many of us, including myself. He was the reason I began animating. Years ago I one day dreamed to work with Monty, somehow, someway. As the journal stated "As for honoring Monty, we will do that in our own way. In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative." Creativity is what makes us excel as humans. You could cry over the loss of one of the greatest creative minds in Rooster Teeth, or you go out and achieve. R.I.P Monty Oum.
"My mother had a saying. She wasn't around a lot when I was a kid, and when she was she could only stay a short time. Seems like she always had somewhere else to be; something important to do. And when she left, she wouldn't say goodbye to me. Instead she always told me, never say goodbye. If you don't say goodbye then, you aren't really gone. You, just aren't here right now." -Carolina (RvB Season 10)

It helped me get through the hardest time of my life(so far), and I wanted to meet the person who created it. Finding out about Monty Oum’s death was heartbreaking for me, because I thought I’d never get a chance to thank him. But if you guys have taught me anything, it’s that just because someone’s dead, doesn’t mean they’re really gone for good. Monty lives on in his dream, which has become the dream of everyone who found it and stuck to it, no matter the reason. This way, Monty lives on in our hearts. (I just realized how corny this sounds but it’s true.) Thank you, Monty.
