- Details of the accident:
On Tuesday, May 10th, 2016, my Dad left for work from our house in Hemet to begin his 150 mile round trip daily commute to Indio. Early as ever, he finished replying to one last email question before work, kissed my mom goodbye, and got into his 2013 Volkswagen Beetle (a diesel, of course, my dad being a total diesel guru).
Now, I've been on countless drives with my Dad, as you can imagine. My entire family has. After a lot of discussion, we all agreed he always put his seatbelt on during every drive we could remember-- just not always right away. Sometimes he needed a gentle reminder from my Mom, and other times something would just click in his mind, shortly followed by the click of his belt. In all newer cars, such as his Beetle, which would give off a few chirps every 3-4 minutes when the driver isn't buckled in, this delayed-belting tendency of his improved drastically. He would always have his buckle on by the third, and in rare cases the fourth chirp, no prompting from mom needed. His hard hearing from decades of using air and power tools meant he could miss the first couple sets of chirps, as well as his need to tune into the correct talk radio station and make sure his daily Diet Pepsi was situated properly in its cup holder.
My Dad was less than 7 minutes away from our house when he approached the same two-lane bend in Ramona Expressway as a 20-year-old Hemet kid and his little brother travelling the opposite direction. According to the kid's testimony, he briefly fell asleep at the wheel, tired from a long night helping his family move. He drifted over into my Dad's lane.
The Saturn sedan hit Dad's VW at the most unforgivingly catastrophic angle possible. My Dad instantly lost his rear driver side wheel, causing his Beetle to overturn and roll multiple times.
Less than seven minutes from home. One, maybe two chirps max. Just barely shy of the three he needed to ensure his seat belt was fastened.
Ronald Wayne Huxell, the most important man in my life, my role model, a man who touched the lives of so many, more than I ever knew, was ejected through the sunroof of his Volkswagen.
Witnesses to the accident, who waited with my Dad for emergency response, told us he was immediately knocked unconscious. He had a laceration to the back of the head, as well as a broken wrist and hip. However, what prevented the doctors from saving him was severe internal bleeding, brought about by his body being quickly and violently forced through the sunroof. The witnesses told us his face, however, was unscathed and handsome as ever.
The Hospital pronounced him dead at 7:30am.
The 20-year-old and his brother suffered minor injuries, which didn't require medical attention. Their Saturn, when seen next to my Dad's Beetle, escaped so intact I couldn't help but deem it shockingly unfair.

That would be extremely smart on Ford's part. Anyone in the diesel community knew who Ron was. I also lost my dad this January unexpectedly, so I know what youre going through. He was a major player in the Toyota world actually. Im very sorry for your loss and will continue to pray for you and your family.

We just watched your video and we are shocked at the news about you're Dad's accident. Please know we have been following him for a short time because my husband just bought a 2007 F250 .Diesel in January of this year. My husband was a detective for the past 25 years down here in the Texas Gulf Coast area. I'm telling you that so you can see his career required him to solve criminal investigations not automotive diagnosis. That's where your Dad came into our lives courtesy of Utube. My husband's automotive experience has been pumping diesel into his truck and I can testify his automotive experience ended at the pump.
I can't adequately express our gratitude to you and your family for the videos you've Dad made courtesy of Utube. His patience detailed instruction on how to flush a complete cooling system on a F250 Diesel superduty is priceless. We didn't have any idea when my husband bought the F250 Diesel truck that the cost of maintenance and repair was going to amount to thousands of dollars but after the first trip to a Diesel mechanic we found out. That's where you're Dad entered our lives. Neither of us had ever watched Utube so we were unaware of the help that was available to us. So far you're Dad's videos instructed my husband about how to replace the body mounts and now my husband is in the process of flushing the cooling system completely on his truck. You're Dad has already saved us thousands of dollars. We are so grateful for the videos you've Dad made, we are retired now so we don't have thousands of dollars to spend on repairs for the truck. We bought a travel trailer so we can enjoy the time we have left so it's very important for my husband to be able to maintain his truck so it will be mechanical able to safely pull the trailer. So please know how greatful we are for you're Dad's videos and how sorry we are for you're loss.. it's truly a tragic loss. We are Tom and Sandra Honeycutt.
Your dad Cory is the reason I am the mechanic I am today...I remember sitting in the parking lot of my first job as a diesel mechanic sobbing because he introduced me to world of diesel repair...I own a diesel repair shop now because of how well he made videos and how I took what I learned from him and applied it to every diesel I ever touched. I always think about him and carry him in my heart...I never personally met him but he was such a huge part of my life and learning how to work on diesels and making me probably one of the best 6 liters mechanics in the state of Colorado! Thank you Ron and may you rest in piece! It’s been 4 years and there isn’t a week that goes by that I don’t think about ya!
As a new diesel tech this is what i hope to achieve with my life. As a new father at 30 in a new career im all the way in.
Stumbled on to this channel by accident. Im going to purchase my first tow truck Friday ford f550 and wanted to learn more about it. This has brought tears to my eyes. Im actually going into my sons room to hug him and tell him l love and that I hope he is as proud of me as you are of your father. God bless him.

Ron was an awesome Human. I bought a Ficm from my buddy Ron eBay. I didn't have the money for the core charge and he helped me with waving that charge. After that I called Ron many times to help me diagnose other problems with my truck at no cost. we have a petting zoo in new Mexico and with Ron's help we have kept our business afloat. God bless you Ron and Thank you for all your help.

Cory and family When it came to diesel Ron was the guy who kept me from pushing my 2003 f350 off a cliffWords that come to mind. Professional. Honest. Understanding. I contacted Ron and told him I was willing to wait til he had time to work on my truck He put me on The List. He got my truck and undid what a few other less qualified techs did I really enjoyed the small amount t of time I got to pick his brain and listen to him explain I read once that when a person dies it is like a library burning down. Fortunately he has left a legacy in family ,memories,tech videos. He won't be forgotten. He really was a labor of love toward us diesel nuts

Hey Corey, I just bought a 6.0 and my first diesel. I came across your dad's channel and watched a few videos. Just came across this one looking for some newer videos. I didn't know your dad but within 30s of watching my first DieselTechRon video, I knew he was honest and passionate. You will see him again, although I am sure he is with you and your family every day. Keep your head up and know that these videos are more than just DIY, they are a journal.
As a father I am confident he is so proud of the man you've become.
So sorry for your loss. I found your father's channel while trying to repair my Father's 2007 6.0. The truck has been sitting since his untimely death. He went out to get his mail, a Jeep veared of the road, struck and mortally injured him.
Your father's selflessness is helping us in our time of need.

Cant believe this. Been waiting on his next video, but as ford tech at a dealership i know how close technicians become at work and couldn't imagine losing one of my co workers. I have never met a tech that takes the time to make videos like Ron. Such and honest hard working man, as you said I bought my first 6.0 because of your dads videos. I repaired every part of it by watching his videos and that is what made me want to be a ford diesel tech. And now 3 years later I made it, after many hours on STARS taking ford training courses and attending classes I am ford diesel certified and watched every video on this channel. Im sure I'm not the only one but i will never forget what his videos did for me. Rest in peace Ron you will never be forgotten for what you have done in this community.

I saw that he passed while reading some forum threads on the topic I was researching and then searched out how and watched this video....4 years later. 5 years after you've posted this, I've just discovered your father's channel. I've been soaking up his knowledge, experience, and wisdom on diesel motors as I've just bought my first diesel. His relaxed, easy-going voice coaching me through some repairs that I might not have attempted without him. I'm sitting here, looking through his videos on coolant flush instructions, and my heart is breaking a bit after coming across this... You never know how hard this must be, as someone who hasn't had to bury their father, but I cannot imagine the heartache that you must go through daily. Ron has left an incredible legacy for you to be proud of. I think I might give my dad an extra phone call tomorrow, just to tell him I love him. Thank you for having the fortitude to come here and give an explanation to half a million folks worldwide who spent a lot of time with your father, albeit mostly anonymously. I hope that, a handful of years later, you and your family have found some peace in all of this. Plenty of guys try to duplicate Diesel Tech Ron and do Ok but Ron could explain things so easily and in a calm and relaxing way. Donated a few times since his passing and will continue every time he helps me with another repair. Least I can do in his memory. Just wanted to stop and say your father was an amazing man. I haven’t had my 6.0 Powerstroke very long and didn’t know anything about diesel trucks before I got it. Will when it broke down I searched TH-cam for all the help I could find. By far Ron’s videos are the most helpful and educational. All the information he has provided is priceless. I donated 50 dollars just now and feel what I’ve learned is worth 10 times that. I will try to donate even more when or if my financial situation improves. Cory and family I worked for Ford since 1977 until 2011 when I was injured at work and had to retire. I loved working and to this day love helping others. I recently inherited a 2003 f350 6.0. With problems needing lots of TLC. I came across Rons youtube channel just within the last six months. I couldn't figure out why he was so great at sharing his knowledge about ford powerstrokes but could not figure why he stopped making his videos. I am so sorry to hear about your great loss and our great loss also his videos have tought me a lot about my truck. His legacy lives on. God bless.

I did my first 6.0 egr delete and oil cooler change because of this good man.
I just came across one of his EGR videos after searching for a week on whether or not it would be worth it to replace my EGR valve in my 1992 Ford F-250 XLT lariat custom 5.7 V8 gasoline. I by chance found his video on one of the f250 ford forums and I was just getting ready to say screw it and giving up on ever finding an in depth educational explation for me to feel good about finding a resalution for the issues in my ford with out waisting time and bleeding me dry financially. You're dad's videos have so far help me with everything I needed to figure out and so even though I don't have a diesel and it's a gasoline engine he literally was my saving grace. I actually have been sharing his youtube to as meny ford and diy auto repair forums I can find not to mention sharing it to everyone I see everywhere I go. I'm sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. His followers and people he's helped and all the new subscriber's like me who he is continueing to help would agree with me that he's still helping I have told people Im sharing his youtube channel with that he is my diy auto repair guardian angel and I truly mean it.
I dont own a diesel, but my son recently bought a used F 550 to haul his excavator. There is nothing wrong with the truck, but i was just training myself on what goes wrong and how to diagnose and repair the issues, just to be of help when the time comes to do a repair on his truck. What an astounding man your grandparents raised your mom made a great choice too. You story broke my heart. Bill Hewitt of powerstoke help . Com mentioned your dad also, i thought that is rare yet commendable and respectful for one diesel mechanic to recommend anothers videos on repair. Your dad touched many lives. I am greatful to meet your family. The emptyness is enormous i had lost both parents, my dad at 18 and my mom at 27 years old. But neither were the examples your mom and dad provided you. Iam so sadden of this tragic accident. I too were a Diesel tech for 23.5yrs, but i also turn to your dad for help on some trucks that i fixed at times for extra help. I will miss him and i pray for healing for the family.RIP such a good man i have got to know as the DieselMan on youtube. Thanks for all your help Sir.
He is still helping! His videos have helped me multiple ways, I just got into a 6.0 power stroke and enjoy his videos and his personality. Saddens me that he is passed but know he’s still making a difference in someone’s day to day life many years later
I know I'm late to this, but I'm sorry for your loss. Ron has been a great influence to the diesel community and has saved mine and my friends asses on so many occasions. He will be missed dearly by all of us, but I guess the old man in the sky needed his truck fixed. Rest in peace DieselTechRon.
Researching an injector related issue today I find Ron (again) and ultimately this video. Having posted a few of my own "help" related videos, it always amazes me how much content of this nature gets viewed. TH-cam sure had grown beyond a place to plunk family vacation vids. Your dad and people like him helped make the information age what it is evolving into. Thanks to him and thanks to you for letting us know. As someone that's nearly old from many vantage points, I still enjoy my own father's company and can't fathom the weight of your loss. Hey! You can visit the dieseltechron channel and have memories of a good guy. A person who was really all about making lives of people he'd never met...better.

Im so sorry for your loss Corey! I see the pain and Im sitting here finding myself so moved by your dedication to finish your Dads story in this video! God bless you and your family.
I am a mobile mechanic who refers to my ALLDATA subscription and TH-cam as primary sources for vehicle repair information. I never touch diesels but a shopowner friend convinced me to have a go at fixing two no-start 6.0 turbodiesels because he trusts me not to rip him off like the shops always do when a diesel comes to their shop for repairs. I began scouring TH-cam for diesel diagnosis tips and watched video after video taking copious notes and applying my newfound knowledge to the two 6.0's. I found DIESELTECHRON about 3 days into my efforts to get these trucks running. It only took a few minutes of watching Ron calmly describe a sympton and then matter of factly show the resolution to that problem to understand he was special. I fixed the first truck that my buddy had already paid a shop $420 to never get running and he was incredulous how a mechanic who never touches diesels got it running like a Swiss Watch. I knew DIESEL TECH RON was the reason i got it running. Now i sit in my buddy's dealership parking lot watching Diesel Tech Ron videos and running the tests that Ron suggested and in a little while, with Ron figuratively standing behind me to give me information and encouragement, i'll be getting this second truck running like a champ too. I am sorry for your family's loss. They say a man's worth is equal to how much he added to other people's lives. According to that measurement DIESEL TECH RON is quite a wealthy man indeed.

Like many other subscribers, I did not know Ron personally, but his many videos (all delivered with his great and relaxed demeanor), really helped me to become a more confident PowerStroke owner. I'm a weekend novice tinkerer with my 7.3 power stroke. Your dad created videos that will live on and help us work on our own trucks. He truly "lives on" and to guys like me, we rely on Ron's videos. His well versed and detailed tutorials give us confidence that we can do things we never would have imagined. I've heard of Ron from other videos on TH-cam which just goes to show the love and respect other mechanics have for a legend. Your dad is not gone; he rides with all of us maniacs that love the sound and smell of our "Big Boy" toys. RIP to a well respected and much loved man.

This is my first time to come across one of his videos. I was really impressed with his ability to transfer knowledge to the viewer and understand his teaching. I was excited to know I have another tech to follow on youtube with great advice but was surprised as I continued to watch more of his videos finding out he had passed. May God bless Rons family, his memories will live on.

im here in 2021 as a new diesel technician for a big farming company, we use only fords and we have a bunch, and ive been watching his vids constantly, and just learned about him dying. It hurts and i barley knew him. Darn, RIP brother, see you in diesel heaven later pal.

His dedication and passion for helping others is apparent in each video you watch. The term hero is thrown around loosely these days, but this man definitely deserves that title considering the impact he had helping so many others. Ron made the world a better place and will be sorely missed.
