The fact that a ‘meal deal’ is the staple of British lunchtimes suggests that we either can’t cook or we are too lazy or busy to cook. It doesn’t help that the working day doesn’t permit a proper lunch (thinking of the French) and even if it did prices can be prohibitive. Also family life is different here than for example in Italy where everyone sits around together from all generations. I'm Australian, went on the Returning to the Old Country holiday twenty years ago. Visited some friends down at Brighton , had lunch in a pub beside the sea, ordered Atlantic salmon on rice, sounded beautiful, I'm by the ocean, expected a delicious feed. Food come out, I shit you not, it was tinned fish served on hot rice, it was still ROUND!!, still shaped like the can! This is not a joke, even my english friends looked embarrassed. So yeah, dont expect too many culinary delights back in Old Blighty.
And there's a dozen 2 star gastro pubs along the seafront in Sidney Melbourne or Perth that would try to palm off the same thing. The answer to a restaurant like that anywhere in the world is to send the food back. I've had a restaurant try to serve me a burnt pizza in Rome. It doesn't mean Italian food is trash.

You can get every cuisine on the planet here, made by ex-pats with better ingredients. We have our own home grown food that is glorious and best some international dishes. The only good food in the UK is simple Atlantic seafood, but you have to go all the way to Scotland.

I was as well, for work in London, and every single english thing I ate was disgusting. The only good food there was chinese and italian. I also ate a kebab which was meh, but defnitely better than that bland fish and stew with huge chunks of vegetables and meat.
They still speak more proper english than most brits actually. It's the latter that changed their way of speaking since the 1700s, much more so than the americans did.
Pro tip, if you go to the big, busy touristy places on the main streets you're an idiot. Find an Italian restaurant or an Indian restaurant down a side street, or for good English pub food head to any non- chain pub that serves food that's not in a city. There's an Italian restaurant near me that's down a side street in the suburbs of a small city, has something like 8 tables and has better Italian food than anything I ate than both of the times I went to Italy. There is some excellent food in this country, but if you're a tourist going to tourist places that will get business purely because of the location you're a fool.

Im from the us grew up with it since it was cheap and I do actually like it a lot, except I only knew it as “poor man supper” until I was trying to find a recipe for it online all these years later. Another meal I consider comfort food is chicken and dumplings, along with biscuits and gravy - but not the trash from a can.

There's something so rewarding about turning less desirable/cheaper ingredients into something delicious. I love some prime rib/crab/gourmet cheeses too don't get me wrong, but a nice pot roast for a fraction of the price is my go-to and very satisfying.

The fact that a ‘meal deal’ is the staple of British lunchtimes suggests that we either can’t cook or we are too lazy or busy to cook. It doesn’t help that the working day doesn’t permit a proper lunch (thinking of the French) and even if it did prices can be prohibitive. Also family life is different here than for example in Italy where everyone sits around together from all generations. Perhaps we need to get Britain back on the map whilst also remembering that this is a comedian trying to make us laugh and he wanted to get that Gordon Ramsay line used that he’s been storing up…

I'm Australian, went on the Returning to the Old Country holiday twenty years ago. Visited some friends down at Brighton , had lunch in a pub beside the sea, ordered Atlantic salmon on rice, sounded beautiful, I'm by the ocean, expected a delicious feed.
Food come out, I shit you not, it was tinned fish served on hot rice, it was still ROUND!!, still shaped like the can!
This is not a joke, even my english friends looked embarrassed.
So yeah, dont expect too many culinary delights back in Old Blighty.

I’m an indigenous Australian. When I was a kid I was fishing one day and caught a nice size squid. A British tourist was watching me as I promptly put it into my fishing bucket, screwed his face all disgusted and asked me “Are you going to eat that?” I think his palate was restricted to good old fish & chips 🤣🤣

Pro tip, if you go to the big, busy touristy places on the main streets you're an idiot. Find an Italian restaurant or an Indian restaurant down a side street, or for good English pub food head to any non- chain pub that serves food that's not in a city. There's an Italian restaurant near me that's down a side street in the suburbs of a small city, has something like 8 tables and has better Italian food than anything I ate than both of the times I went to Italy. There is some excellent food in this country, but if you're a tourist going to tourist places that will get business purely because of the location you're a fool.

Another meal I consider comfort food is chicken and dumplings, along with biscuits and gravy - but not the trash from a can.

There's something so rewarding about turning less desirable/cheaper ingredients into something delicious. I love some prime rib/crab/gourmet cheeses too don't get me wrong, but a nice pot roast for a fraction of the price is my go-to and very satisfying.
